Search

Nonlinear responses in transport experiments may unveil information and generate new phenomena in materials that are not accessible at linear order due to symmetry constraints. While the linear anomalous Hall response strictly requires the absence of time-reversal symmetry, the second-order, thus nonlinear, Hall response needs broken inversion symmetry. Recently, much effort has been made to obtain a second-order Hall voltage in response to a longitudinal ac driving current, both to obtain information about band geometric quantities and for its useful technological applications, including rectification and frequency doubling. Typically, additional material engineering is required in noncentrosymmetric systems to obtain second-order responses since it obeys a stringent crystallographic symmetry constraint. To circumvent this, an alternative route is to apply a dc electric field. In this Letter, we uncover an electric field induced second-order anomalous Hall effect in an inversion-broken system possessing unconventional Rashba bands. We establish that the quantum metric, a geometrical feature of electronic wave functions providing information on non-trivial structure of Bloch bands, is responsible for providing the nonlinear Hall response., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Periodically driven systems offer a perfect breeding ground for out-of-equilibrium engineering of topological boundary states at zero energy ($0$-mode), as well as finite energy ($\pi$-mode), with the latter having no static analog. The Floquet operator and the effective Floquet Hamiltonian, which encapsulate the stroboscopic features of the driven system, capture both spectral and localization properties of the $0$- and $\pi$-modes but sometimes fail to provide complete topological characterization, especially when $0$- and $\pi$-modes coexist. In this work, we utilize the spectral localizer, a powerful local probe that can provide numerically efficient, spatially local, and energy-resolved topological characterization. In particular, we apply the spectral localizer to the effective Floquet Hamiltonian for driven one- and two-dimensional topological systems with no or limited symmetries and are able to assign topological invariants, or local markers, that characterize the $0$- and the $\pi$-boundary modes individually and unambiguously. We investigate intrinsic superconducting diode effect in the unconventional superconducting state of $d$-wave altermagnets. We find large diode efficiencies in the wide-reaching finite-momentum pairing regimes of the phase diagram. Remarkably, even perfect diode efficiency of 100% can be obtained in the presence of an external magnetic field. We attribute the largest efficiencies to competition between multiple zero-momentum (BCS) and finite-momentum superconducting states, which is connected to a topological nodal-to-nodeless transition in altermagnets with magnetic field, making our results applicable to a wide range of altermagnets., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Superconductivity in the recently discovered altermagnetic materials hosts large prospects for both fundamental physics and technological applications. In this work we show that a characteristic spin-sublattice locking in altermagnets puts severe constraints on possible superconducting pairing. In particular, we uncover that the most common form of superconductivity, uniform $s$-wave spin-singlet pairing is not possible to achieve in altermagnets. Considering an effective model for a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave altermagnet on a square lattice, we instead find that the most likely forms of spin-singlet pairing have $d_{x^2-y^2}$- or extended $s$-wave symmetry. We also find that the simplest form of equal-spin-triplet $p$-wave pairing is not allowed, but it can only exist as a mixed-spin-triplet $p$-wave state. We verify these constraints on pairing within an interaction-induced model of altermagnetism, where we also establish their validity for finite-momentum pairing. Additionally we discuss the possible pairing symmetries for odd-frequency superconducting pairing. Random vacancies in a graphene monolayer induce defect states that are known to form a narrow impurity band centered around zero energy at half-filling. We use a space-resolved formulation of the quantum metric and establish a strong enhancement of the electronic correlations in this impurity band. The enhancement is primarily due to strong correlations between pairs of vacancies situated on different sublattices at anomalously large spatial distances. We trace the strong enhancement to both the multifractal vacancy wave functions, which ties the system exactly at the Anderson insulator transition for all defect concentrations, and preserving the chiral symmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the properties of a Fibonacci quasicrystal (QC) arrangement of a one-dimensional topological superconductor, such as a magnetic atom chain deposited on a superconducting surface. We uncover a general mutually exclusive competition between the QC properties and the topological superconducting phase with Majorana bound states (MBS): there are no MBS inside the QC gaps and the MBS never behaves as QC subgap states, and likewise, no critical, or winding, QC subgap states exist inside the topological superconducting gaps. Surprisingly, despite this competition, we find that the QC is still highly beneficial for realizing topological superconductivity with MBS. It both leads to additional large nontrivial regions with MBS in parameter space, that are topologically trivial in crystalline systems, and increases the topological gap protecting the MBS. We also find that shorter approximants of the Fibonacci QC display the largest benefits. As a consequence, our results promote QCs, and especially their short approximants, as an appealing platform for improved experimental possibilities to realize MBS as well as generally highlights the fundamental interplay between different topologies., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Quasiperiodicity has recently been proposed to enhance superconductivity and its proximity effect. At the same time, there has been significant experimental progress in the fabrication of quasiperiodic structures, also in reduced dimensions. Motivated by these developments, we use microscopic tight-binding theory to investigate the DC Josephson effect through a ballistic Fibonacci chain attached to two superconducting leads. The Fibonacci chain is one of the most studied examples of quasicrystals, hosting a rich multifractal spectrum, containing topological gaps with different winding numbers. We study how the Andreev bound states (ABS), current-phase relation, and the critical current depend on the quasiperiodic degrees of freedom, from short to long junctions. While the current-phase relation shows a traditional $2\pi$ sinusoidal or sawtooth profile, we find that the ABS obtain quasiperiodic oscillations and that the Andreev reflection is qualitatively altered, leading to quasiperiodic oscillations in the critical current as a function of junction length. Surprisingly, despite earlier proposals of quasiperiodicity enhancing superconductivity compared to crystalline junctions, we do not in general find that it enhances the critical current. However, we find significant current enhancement for reduced interface transparency due to the modified Andreev reflection. Furthermore, by varying the chemical potential, e.g. by an applied gate voltage, we find a fractal oscillation between superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) and superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) behavior. Finally, we show that the winding of the subgap states leads to an equivalent winding in the critical current, such that the winding numbers, and thus the topological invariant, can be determined., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures

Condensed matter systems are continuously subjected to dissipation, which often has adverse effects on quantum phenomena. We focus on the impact of dissipation on a superconducting Rashba nanowire. We reveal that the system can still host Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) with a finite lifetime in the presence of dissipation. Most interestingly, dissipation can also generate two kinds of dissipative boundary states: four robust zero-modes (RZMs) and two MZMs, in the regime where the non-dissipative system is topologically trivial. The MZMs appear via bulk gap closing and are topologically characterized by a winding number. The RZMs are not associated with any bulk states and possess no winding number, but their emergence is instead tied to exceptional points. Further, we confirm the stability of the dissipation-induced RZMs and MZMs in the presence of random disorder. Our study paves the way for both realizing and stabilizing MZMs in an experimental setup, driven by dissipation.

We investigate the topological phases that appear in an orbital version of the Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (BBH) model in the presence of conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductivity and with the possibility of tuning an in-plane magnetic field. We chart out the phase diagram by considering different boundary conditions, with the topology of the individual phases further examined by considering both the Wannier and entanglement spectra, as well as the Majorana polarization. For weak to moderate values of magnetic field and superconducting pairing amplitude, we find a second-order topological superconductor phase with eight zero-energy corner modes. Further increasing field or pairing, half of the corner states can be turned into zero-energy edge-localized modes, thus forming a type of hybrid-order phase. Then, we find two different putative first-order topological phases, a nodal and a nodeless phase, both with zero-energy flat bands localized along mirror-symmetric open edges. For the nodal phase, the flat bands are localized between the nodes in reciprocal space, while in the nodeless phase, with its a full bulk gap, the zero-energy boundary flat band spans the whole Brillouin zone., Comment: 14+3 pages, 14 figures

We study interaction-mediated magnetism on the surface of ABC-multilayer graphene driven by its zero-energy topological flat bands. Using the random-phase approximation we treat onsite Hubbard repulsion and find multiple competing magnetic states, due to both intra- and inter-valley scattering, with the latter causing an enlarged magnetic unit cell. At half-filling and when the Hubbard repulsion is weak, we observe two different ferromagnetic orders. Once the Hubbard repulsion becomes more realistic, new ferrimagnetic orders arise with distinct incommensurate intra- or inter-valley scattering vectors depending on interaction strength and doping, leading to a multitude of competing magnetic states., Comment: Main text: 7 pages and 4 figures, Supplementary Material: 11 pages and 8 figures

We explore the possibilities for spin-singlet superconductivity in newly discovered altermagnets. Investigating $d$-wave altermagnets, we show that finite-momentum superconductivity can easily emerge in altermagnets even though they have no net magnetization, when the superconducting order parameter also has $d$-wave symmetry with nodes coinciding with the altermagnet nodes. Additionally, we find a rich phase diagram when both altermagnetism and an external magnetic field are considered, including superconductivity appearing at high magnetic fields from a parent zero-field normal state., Comment: New results in the Supplementary Material for a different model of altermagnetism

Chiral superconductors spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry and host topologically protected edge modes, supposedly generating chiral edge currents which are typically taken as a characteristic fingerprint of chiral superconductivity. However, recent studies have shown that the total edge current in two dimensions (2D) often vanishes for all chiral superconductors except for chiral $p$-wave, especially at low temperatures, thus severely impeding potential experimental verification and characterization of these superconductors. In this work, we use quasiclassical theory of superconductivity to study mesoscopic disc-schaped chiral $d$-wave superconductors. We find that mesoscopic finite-size effects cause a dramatic enhancement of the total charge current and orbital magnetic moment (OMM), even at low temperatures. We study how these quantities scale with temperature, spontaneous Meissner screening, and system radius $\mathcal{R} \in [5,200]\xi_0$ with superconducting coherence length $\xi_0$. We find a general $1/\mathcal{R}$ scaling in the total charge current and OMM for sufficiently large systems, but this breaks down in small systems, instead producing a local maximum at $\mathcal{R} \approx 10{\text{--}}20\xi_0$ due to mesoscopic finite-size effects. These effects also cause a spontaneous charge-current reversal opposite to the chirality below $\mathcal{R} < 10\xi_0$. The analysis of waiting times of electron transfers has recently become experimentally accessible owing to advances in noninvasive probes working in the short-time regime. We study electron waiting times in a topological Andreev interferometer: a superconducting loop with controllable phase difference connected to a quantum spin Hall edge, where the edge state helicity enables the transfer of electrons and holes into separate leads, with transmission controlled by the loop's phase difference $\phi$. This setup features gapless Majorana bound states at $\phi=\pi$. The waiting times for electron transfers across the junction are sensitive to the presence of the gapless states, but are uncorrelated for all $\phi$. By contrast, at $\phi=\pi$ the waiting times of Andreev-scattered holes show a strong correlation and the crossed (hole-electron) distributions feature a unique behavior. Both effects exclusively result from the nonlocal properties of Majorana bound states. ABC-stacked multilayer graphene (ABC-MLG) exhibits topological surface flat bands with a divergent density of states, leading to many-body instabilities at charge neutrality. Here, we explore electronic ordering within a mean-field approach with full generic treatment of all spin-isotropic, two-site charge density and spin interactions up to next-nearest neighbor (NNN) sites. We find that surface superconductivity and magnetism are significantly enhanced over bulk values. We find spin-singlet $s$ wave and unconventional NNN bond spin-triplet $f$ wave to be the dominant superconducting pairing symmetries, both with a full energy gap. By establishing the existence of ferromagnetic intra-sublattice interaction, $(J_2<0)$ we conclude that the $f$-wave state is favored in ABC-MLG, in sharp contrast to bulk ABC-graphite where chiral $d$- or $p$-wave states, together with s-wave states, display stronger ordering tendencies albeit not achievable at charge neutrality. We trace this distinctive surface behavior to the strong sublattice polarization of the surface flat bands. We also find competing ferrimagnetic order, fully consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The magnetic order interpolates between sublattice ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, but only with the ratio of the sublattice magnetic moments ($R$) being insensitive to the DFT exchange correlation functional. We finally establish the full phase diagram by constraining the interactions to the $R$-value identified by DFT. We find $f$-wave superconductivity being favored for all weak to moderately strong couplings $J_2$ and as long as $J_2$ is a sufficiently large part of the full interaction mix. Gating ABC-MLG away from charge neutrality further enhances the $f$-wave state over the ferrimagnetic state, establishing ABC-MLG as a strong candidate for $f$-wave superconductivity., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures + supplementary (1 page). Chiral $d$-wave superconductivity has recently been proposed in a wide range of materials based on both experiment and theoretical works. Chiral superconductors host a finite Chern number set by the winding of the superconducting order parameter and associated topologically protected chiral edge modes. However, the chiral edge currents and orbital angular momentum (OAM) generated by the edge modes are not topologically protected and another, more robust, experimental probe is therefore needed to facilitate experimental verification of chiral $d$-wave superconductors. We have recently shown the appearance of quadruply quantized coreless vortices (CVs) in chiral $d$-wave superconductors, consisting of a closed domain wall decorated with eight fractional vortices, and generating a smoking-gun signature of the Chern number, chirality, and the superconducting pairing symmetry [P. Holmvall and A. M. Black-Schaffer, arXiv:2212.08156 (2023)]. Specifically, the CV spontaneously breaks axial symmetry for parallel chirality and vorticity, with a signature appearing directly in the local density of states (LDOS) measurable with scanning-tunneling spectroscopy (STS). In this work, we first demonstrate a strong tunability of the CV size and shape directly reflected in the LDOS and then show that the LDOS signature is robust in the presence of regular Abrikosov vortices, strong confinement, system and normal-state anisotropy, different Fermi surfaces (FSs), non-degenerate order parameters, and even non-magnetic impurities. We examine the response of the Fermi arc in the context of quasi-particle interference (QPI) with regard to a localized surface impurity on various three-dimensional Weyl semimetals (WSMs). Our study also reveals the variation of the local density of states (LDOS), obtained by Fourier transforming the QPI profile, on the two-dimensional surface. We use the $T$-matrix formalism to numerically (analytically and numerically) capture the details of the momentum space scattering in QPI (real space decay in LDOS), considering relevant tight-binding lattice and/or low-energy continuum models modeling a range of different WSMs. In particular, we consider multi-WSM (mWSM), hosting multiple Fermi arcs between two opposite chirality Weyl nodes (WNs), where we find a universal $1/r$-decay ($r$ measuring the radial distance from the impurity core) of the impurity-induced LDOS, irrespective of the topological charge. Interestingly, the inter-Fermi arc scattering is only present for triple WSMs, where we find an additional $1/r^3$-decay as compared to double and single WSMs. The untilted single (double) [triple] WSM shows a straight-line (leaf-like) [oval-shaped] QPI profile. The above QPI profiles are canted for hybrid WSMs where type-I and type-II Weyl nodes coexist, however, hybrid single WSM demonstrates strong non-uniformity, unlike the hybrid double and triple WSMs. We also show that the chirality and the positions of the Weyl nodes imprint marked signatures in the QPI profile. This allows us to distinguish between different WSMs, including the time-reversal-broken WSMs from the time-reversal-invariant WSM, even though both of the WSMs can host two pairs of Weyl nodes. Our study can thus shed light on experimentally obtainable complex QPI profiles and help differentiate different WSMs and their surface band structures., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the effects of single, multiple, and extended defects in the form of non-magnetic impurities and vacancies in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at and away from the magic angle, using a fully atomistic model and focusing on the behavior of the flat low-energy moir\'e bands. For strong impurities and vacancies in the $AA$ region we find a complete removal of one of the four moir\'e bands, resulting in a significant depletion of the charge density in the $AA$ regions even at extremely low defect concentrations. We find similar results for other defect locations, with the exception of the least coordinated sites in the $AB$ region, where defects instead result in a peculiar band replacement process within the moir\'e bands. In the vacancy limit, this process yields a band structure misleadingly similar to the pristine case. Moreover, we show that triple point fermions (TPFs), which are the crossing of the Dirac point by a flat band, appearing for single, periodic, defects, are generally not preserved when adding extended or multiple defects, and thus likely not experimentally relevant. We further identify two universal length scales for defects, consisting of charge modulations on the atomic scale and on the moir\'e scale, illustrating the importance of both the atomic and moir\'e structures for understanding TBG. We show that our conclusions hold beyond the magic angle and for fully isolated defects. In summary, our results demonstrate that the normal state of TBG and its moir\'e flat bands are extremely sensitive to both the location and strength of non-magnetic impurities and vacancies, which should have significant implications for any emergent ordered state., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Chiral $d$-wave superconductivity has been proposed in a number of different materials, but characteristic experimental fingerprints have been largely lacking. We show that quadruply quantized coreless vortices are prone to form and offer distinctive signatures of the chiral $d$-wave state in both the local density of states and the total magnetic moment. Their dissimilarity in positive versus negative magnetic fields further leads to additional spontaneous symmetry breaking, producing clear evidence of time-reversal symmetry breaking, chiral superconductivity, and the Chern number., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Supplemental Material: 11 pages, 12 figures

We consider the most energetically favorable symmetry-allowed spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconducting pairing symmetries in monolayer and few-layer graphene, and for each calculate the energy spectrum in the presence of a scalar or magnetic impurity. We find that two doubly degenerate subgap states exist for scalar impurities for all types of pairing, except for the spin-singlet $s$-wave state. For magnetic impurities, two or four subgap states may form depending on the order parameter symmetry. We find that the spin polarization of these states allows one to distinguish between spin-singlet and triplet pairing, for example, only the spin-triplet states show opposite-energy subgap states with the same spin. We also calculate the quasi-particle interference patterns associated with the subgap states and find that they exhibit features that could distinguish between different types of pairing symmetries, especially a breaking of rotational symmetry for nodal states, stronger for the spin-singlet $d_{xy}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ than for the spin-triplet $p_x$ and $p_y$ states.

Disorder has appeared as one of the main mechanisms to induce topologically trivial zero-energy states in superconductor-semiconductor systems, thereby challenging the detection of topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states. Here we demonstrate that, for disorder in any part of the system, the formation of disorder-induced trivial zero-energy states can to a large extent be mitigated by keeping the coupling between the semiconductor and superconductor weak. The only exception is strong disorder in the semiconductor, where instead the strong coupling regime is somewhat more robust against disorder. Furthermore, we find that the topological phase in this weak coupling regime is robust against disorder, with a large and well-defined topological gap which is highly beneficial for topological protection. We study the emergence of electronic edge states in superconducting (SC) monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer graphene for both spin-singlet and spin-triplet SC order parameters. We focus mostly on the gapped chiral $p+ip'$- and $d+id'$-wave SC states that show a non-zero Chern number and a corresponding number of edge states. For the $p+ip'$-wave state, we observe a rich Chern phase diagram when tuning the chemical potential and the SC order parameter amplitudes, which depends strongly on the number of layers and their stacking, and is also modified by trigonal warping. At small parameter values we observe a region whose Chern number is unique to rhombohedrally stacked graphene, and is independent of the number of layers. Our results can be understood in relation not only to the SC order parameter winding as expected, but also to the normal state band structure. This observation establishes the importance of the normal state characteristics for understanding the topology in SC graphene systems.

We review all symmetry-allowed spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconducting (SC) order parameters in graphene ($s$-wave, $d$-wave, $p$-wave, and $f$-wave) generated by generic onsite, nearest-neighbor (NN), and next-to-nearest-neighbor (NNN) pairing interactions in a tight-binding model. For each pairing channel, we calculate both the band structure and the dependence of the density of states on energy, chemical potential, and on the pairing strength. In particular, we distinguish between nodal superconducting states and fully gapped states and study the dependence of gap closing points on the chemical potential and the superconducting pairing strength. We further investigate the difference between mono-, bi-, and tri-layer ABC and ABA graphene, including accounting for the effects of trigonal warping.

The robustness against local perturbations, as long as the symmetry of the system is preserved, is a distinctive feature of topological quantum states. Magnetic impurities and defects break time-reversal invariance and, consequently, time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductors are fragile against this type of disorder. Non-magnetic impurities, however, preserve time-reversal symmetry and one naively expects a TRI topological superconductor to persist in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. In this work, we study the effect of non-magnetic disorder on a TRI topological superconductor with extended $s$-wave pairing, which can be engineered at the interface of an Fe-based superconductor and a strongly spin-orbit coupled Rashba layer. We model two different types of non-magnetic random disorder and analyze both the bulk density of states and edge state spectrum. Contrary to naive expectations, we find that the disorder strongly affects the topological phase by closing the energy gap, while trivial superconducting phases remain stable and fully gapped. The disorder phase diagram reveals a strong expansion of a nodal phase with increasing disorder. We further show the decay of the helical Majorana edge states in the topological phase and how they eventually disappear with increasing disorder. These results alter our understanding of effects of impurities and disorder on TRI topological phases and may help explain the difficulty of experimental observation of TRI topological superconductors., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We propose a method to distinguish between trivial and topological, Majorana, zero-energy states in both short and long superconductor-normal-superconductor junctions based on Rashba nanowires using phase-biased equilibrium transport measurements. In particular, we show how the sawtooth profile of the supercurrent, due to the Majorana oscillation suppression in the topological phase for sufficiently long superconductor regions, leads to a strong signal in its zero-frequency susceptibility for a phase difference of $\phi=\pi$. This signal is notably insensitive to the chemical potential in the normal region, while trivial zero-energy states only causes signals in the susceptibility that is highly varying with the chemical potential, thus turning gating of the normal region into a simple experimental control knob. Furthermore, we obtain that, by tuning the junction transparency, critical currents in both short and long junctions undergo a reduction in the number of oscillations as a function of magnetic field only in the topological phase, an effect that find to be intimately linked to Majorana non-locality. Finally, we show that our results also hold at finite temperatures, thus highlighting their potential measurability under realistic experimental conditions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We consider a non-Hermitian superconducting system by coupling a conventional superconductor to a ferromagnet lead and demonstrate the emergence of exceptional points when an external Zeeman field is applied. We discover that, depending on the non-Hermiticity and the Zeeman field, the exceptional points mark the ends of lines with zero real energy, thus giving rise to topologically protected and highly tunable bulk Fermi arcs, which we coin bulk Bogoliubov Fermi arcs due to their superconducting nature. We show that these bulk Bogoliubov Fermi arcs are the non-Hermitian counterparts of the Hermitian topological phase transition but are much more prevalent and also experimentally detectable through large spectral signatures., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Majorana zero modes (MZMs) emerge as edge states in topological superconductors and are promising for topological quantum computation, but their detection has so far been elusive. Here we show that non-Hermiticity can be used to obtain dramatically more robust MZMs. The enhanced properties appear as a result of an extreme instability of exceptional points to superconductivity, such that even a vanishingly small superconducting order parameter already opens a large energy gap, produces well-localized MZMs, and leads to strong superconducting pair correlations. We consider a finite-size topological Josephson junction formed at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to conventional superconductors and study the impact of Cooper pair symmetries on the electron transport. We find that, due to the finite junction size, electron transport is highly tunable by the superconducting phase difference $\phi$ across the junction. At zero frequency and $\phi=\pi$, the setup exhibits vanishing local Andreev reflection and perfect normal transmission due to the interplay of finite junction size and formation of topological Andreev bound states in the middle of the junction. We reveal that this striking behavior enables odd-frequency Cooper pairs to become the only type of pairing inside the topological junction that contribute to transport. The electronic bandstructure of Au$_2$Pb has a Dirac cone which gaps when undergoing a structural transition into a low temperature superconducting phase. This suggests that the superconducting phase ($T_c=1.1$ K) might hold topological properties at the surface. Here we make Scanning Tunneling Microscopy experiments on the surface of superconducting Au$_2$Pb. We measure the superconducting gap and find a sizeable superconducting density of states at the Fermi level. We discuss possible origins for this finding in terms of superconductivity induced into surface states.

Understanding the nature of Cooper pairs is essential to describe the properties of superconductors. The original proposal of Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) was based on electrons pairing with same energy and zero center-of-mass momentum. With the advent of new superconductors, different forms of pairing have been discussed. In particular, Cooper pairs with finite center-of-mass momentum have received large interest. Along with such finite-momentum pairs, pairing of electrons at different energies is also central to understanding some superconductors. Here, we investigate the interplay of finite-momentum and finite-energy Cooper pairs considering two different systems: a conventional $s$-wave superconductor under applied magnetic field and a $d$-wave finite-momentum pairing state in the absence of magnetic field relevant to correlated superconductors. Investigating both these systems, we find finite-energy pairs persisting independently of finite-momentum pairing, and that they lead to odd-frequency superconducting correlations. We contrast this finding by showing that the even-frequency correlations are predominantly driven by zero-energy pairs for most frequencies. We further calculate the Meissner effect and find that odd-frequency correlations are essential for correctly describing the Meissner effect.

We show that quasiparticle interference (QPI) due to omnipresent weak impurities and probed by Fourier transform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy acts as a direct experimental probe of bulk odd-frequency superconducting pairing. Taking the example of a conventional $s$-wave superconductor under applied magnetic field, we show that the nature of the QPI peaks can only be characterized by including the odd-frequency pairing correlations generated in this system. We investigate the role of the coupling between a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor nanowire and a conventional $s$-wave superconductor on the emergence of the topological superconducting phase with Majorana bound states in an applied magnetic field. We show that when the coupling is strong, the topological phase transition point is very sensitive to the size of the superconductor and in order to reach the topological phase a strong magnetic field is required, which can easily be detrimental for superconductivity. Moreover, the induced energy gap separating the Majorana bound states and other quasi-particles in the topological phase is substantially suppressed compared to the gap at zero field. In contrast, in the weak coupling regime, we find that the situation is essentially the opposite, with the topological phase emerging at much lower magnetic fields and a sizable induced energy gap in the topological phase, that can also be controlled by the chemical potential of the superconductor. Furthermore, we show that the weak coupling regime does not generally allow for the formation of topologically trivial zero-energy states at the wire end points, in stark contrast to the strong coupling regime where such states are found for a wide range of parameters. Fermion systems with flat bands can boost superconductivity by enhancing the density of states at the Fermi level. We use quasiexact numerical methods to show that repulsive interactions between spinless fermions in a one-dimensional (1D) flat-band system, the Creutz ladder, give a finite pairing energy that increases with repulsion, though charge quasi-order (QO) remains dominant. Adding an attractive component shifts the balance in favor of superconductivity and the interplay of two flat bands further yields a remarkable enhancement of superconductivity, well outside of known paradigms for 1D fermions.

We first show the realization of exceptional points in a non-Hermitian superconducting system based on a conventional superconductor and then demonstrate that, surprisingly, the system hosts odd-frequency pairing, solely generated by the non-Hermiticity. While there is a coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pairs under general conditions, we find that the even-frequency term vanishes at the exceptional degeneracies, leaving only odd-frequency pairing. This exceptional odd-frequency pairing is directly given by the imaginary part of the eigenvalues at the exceptional points and can be measured from the spectral function. The possible symmetries of the superconducting pair amplitude is a consequence of the fermionic nature of the Cooper pairs. For spin-$1/2$ systems this leads to the $\mathcal{SPOT}=-1$ classification of superconductivity, where $\mathcal{S}$, $\mathcal{P}$, $\mathcal{O}$, and $\mathcal{T}$ refer to the exchange operators for spin, parity, orbital, and time between the paired electrons. However, this classification no longer holds for higher spin fermions, where each electron also possesses a finite orbital angular momentum strongly coupled with the spin degree of freedom, giving instead a conserved total angular moment. For such systems, we here instead introduce the $\mathcal{JPT}=-1$ classification, where $\mathcal{J}$ is the exchange operator for the $z$-component of the total angular momentum quantum numbers. We then specifically focus on spin-$3/2$ fermion systems and several superconducting cubic half-Heusler compounds that have recently been proposed to be spin-$3/2$ superconductors. By using a generic Hamiltonian suitable for these compounds we calculate the superconducting pair amplitudes and find finite pair amplitudes for all possible symmetries obeying the $\mathcal{JPT}=-1$ classification, including all possible odd-frequency (odd-$\omega$) combinations. Moreover, one of the very interesting properties of spin-$3/2$ superconductors is the possibility of them hosting a Bogoliubov Fermi surface (BFS), where the superconducting energy gap is closed across a finite area. We show that a spin-$3/2$ superconductor with a pair potential satisfying an odd-gap time-reversal product and being non-commuting with the normal-state Hamiltonian hosts both a BFS and has finite odd-$\omega$ pair amplitudes. We then reduce the full spin-$3/2$ Hamiltonian to an effective two-band model and show that odd-$\omega$ pairing is inevitably present in superconductors with a BFS and vice versa., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures; published version

Thermoelectric junctions are often made of components of different materials characterized by distinct transport properties. Single material junctions, with the same type of charge carriers, have also been considered to investigate various classical and quantum effects on the thermoelectric properties of nanostructured materials. We here introduce the concept of defect-induced thermoelectric voltage, namely, {\it thermodefect voltage}, in graphene nanoribbon (GNR) junctions under a temperature gradient. Our thermodefect junction is formed by two GNRs with identical properties except the existence of defects in one of the nanoribbons. At room temperature the thermodefect voltage is highly sensitive to the types of defects, their locations, as well as the width and edge configurations of the GNRs. We demonstrate that the thermodefect voltage can be as high as $1.7\,$mV/K for $555$-$777$ defects in semiconducting armchair GNRs. We further investigate the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductance, and electronic thermal conductance, and also the power factor of the individual junction components to explain the thermodefect effect. The simultaneous interplay of strong electron-electron correlations, topological zero-energy states, and disorder is yet an unexplored territory but of immense interest due to their inevitable presence in many materials. Copper oxide high-temperature superconductors (cuprates) with pair breaking edges host a flat band of topological zero-energy states, making them an ideal playground where strong correlations, topology, and disorder are strongly intertwined. Here we show that this interplay in cuprates generates a new phase of matter: a fully gapped ``phase crystal" state that breaks both translational and time-reversal invariance, characterized by a modulation of the $d$-wave superconducting phase co-existing with a modulating extended $s$-wave superconducting order. In contrast to conventional wisdom, we find that this phase crystal state is remarkably robust to omnipresent disorder, but only in the presence of strong correlations, thus giving a clear route to its experimental realization., Comment: Added discussion and analysis on comparison with experiments

The Meissner effect is one of the defining properties of superconductivity, with a conventional superconductor completely repelling an external magnetic field. In contrast to this diamagnetic behavior, odd-frequency superconducting pairing has often been seen to produce a paramagnetic Meissner effect, which instead makes the superconductor unstable due to the attraction of magnetic field. In this work we study how both even- and odd-frequency superconducting pairing contributes to the Meissner effect in a generic two-orbital superconductor with a tunable odd-frequency pairing component. By dividing the contributions to the Meissner effect into intra- and inter-band processes, we find that the odd-frequency pairing actually generates both dia- and paramagnetic Meissner responses, determined by the normal-state band structure. More specifically, for materials with two electron-like (hole-like) low-energy bands we find that the odd-frequency inter-band contribution is paramagnetic but nearly canceled by a diamagnetic odd-frequency intra-band contribution. Combined with a diamagnetic even-frequency contribution, such superconductors thus always display a large diamagnetic Meissner response to an external magnetic field, even in the presence of large odd-frequency pairing. For materials with an inverted, or topological, band structure, we find the odd-frequency inter-band contribution to instead be diamagnetic and even the dominating contribution to the Meissner effect in the near-metallic regime. Taken together, our results show that odd-frequency pairing in multi-orbital superconductors does not generate a destabilizing paramagnetic Meissner effect and can even generate a diamagnetic response in topological materials., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) develops large moir\'e patterns at small twist angles with flat energy bands hosting domes of superconductivity. The large system size and intricate band structure have however hampered investigations into the superconducting state. Here, using full-scale atomistic modelling with local electronic interactions, we find at and above experimentally relevant temperatures a highly inhomogeneous superconducting state with nematic ordering on both atomic and moir\'e length scales. The nematic state has a locally anisotropic real-valued d-wave pairing, with a nematic vector winding throughout the moir\'e pattern, and is three-fold degenerate. Although d-wave symmetric, the superconducting state has a full energy gap, which we tie to a {\pi}-phase interlayer coupling. The superconducting nematicity is further directly detectable in the local density of states. Our results show that atomistic modeling is essential and also that very similar local interactions produce very different superconducting states in TBG and the high-temperature cuprate superconductors., Comment: 4 figures

The emergence of zero energy states in non-topological superconductors represents an inevitable problem that obscures the proper identification of zero energy Majorana bound states (MBSs) and prevents their use as topologically protected qubits. In this Research Letter we investigate long superconductor-normal-superconductor junctions where trivial zero energy states, robust over a large range of parameters, appear as a result of helicity and confinement in the normal region. We demonstrate that both equilibrium supercurrents and critical currents are sensitive to variations in the length of the superconductor regions in the topological phase hosting MBSs, but, remarkably, no such length dependence exists when robust, but trivial, zero energy states are present. Pair density waves, identified by Cooper pairs with finite center-of-mass momentum, have recently been observed in copper oxide based high T$_\textrm{c}$ superconductors (cuprates). A charge density modulation or wave is also ubiquitously found in underdoped cuprates. Within a general mean-field one-band model we show that the coexistence of charge density waves and uniform superconductivity in $d$-wave superconductors like cuprates, generates an odd-frequency spin-singlet pair density wave, in addition to the even-frequency counterparts. The strength of the induced odd-frequency pair density wave depends on the modulation wave vector of the charge density wave, with the odd-frequency pair density waves even becoming comparable to the even-frequency ones in parts of the Brillouin zone. We show that a change in the modulation wave vector of the charge density wave from bi-axial to uni-axial, can enhance the odd-frequency component of the pair density waves. Such a coexistence of superconductivity and uni-axial charge density wave has already been experimentally verified at high magnetic fields in underdoped cuprates. We further discuss the possibility of an odd-frequency spin-triplet pair density wave generated in the coexistence regime of superconductivity and spin density waves, applicable to the iron-based superconductors. We introduce the concept of Floquet odd-frequency superconducting pairs and establish their emergence in time-periodic conventional superconductors, where the continuous time-translation invariance is broken. We show that these exotic Cooper pairs are possible because the Floquet modes in time-periodic systems provide an additional index (a Floquet index) that broadens the classification of pair symmetries, with no analog in the static regime. The most promising mechanisms for the formation of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in condensed matter systems involve one-dimensional systems (such as semiconductor nanowires, magnetic chains, and quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) edges) proximitized to superconducting materials. The choice between each of these options involves trade-offs between several factors such as reproducibility of results, system tunability, and robustness of the resulting MBS. In this article, we propose that a combination of two of these systems, namely a magnetic chain deposited on a QSHI edge in contact with a superconducting surface, offers a better choice of tunability and MBS robustness compared to magnetic chain deposited on bulk. We study how the QSHI edge interacts with the magnetic chain, and see how the topological phase is affected by edge proximity. We show that MBSs near the edge can be realized with lower chemical potential and Zeeman field than the ones inside the bulk, independently of the chain's magnetic order (ferromagnetic or spiral order). Different magnetic orderings in the chain modify the overall phase diagram, even suppressing the boundless topological phase found in the bulk for chains located at the QSHI edge. Moreover, we quantify the "quality" of MBSs by calculating the Majorana Polarization (MP) for different configurations. For chains located at the edge, the MP is close to its maximum value already for short chains. For chains located away from the edge, longer chains are needed to attain the same quality as chains located at the edge. We explore the role of proximity-induced odd-frequency pairing in the thermoelectricity of a ferromagnet when coupled to a conventional $s$-wave spin-singlet superconductor through a spin-active interface. By varying both the polarization and its direction in the ferromagnet and the interfacial spin-orbit interaction strength, we analyze the behavior of all proximity-induced pair amplitudes in the ferromagnet and their contributions to the thermoelectric coefficients. Based on our results for the Seebeck coefficient, we predict that odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairs are much efficient than the conventional spin-singlet even-frequency pairs in enhancing thermoelectricity of the junction, especially mixed-spin triplet pairing is favorable. Our results on the thermoelectric figure of merit show that ferromagnet/superconductor junctions are very good thermoelectric systems when superconductivity is dominated by odd-frequency pairing., Comment: Published version

In this work we develop EPOCH: Equilibrium Propagator by Orthogonal polynomial CHain, a computationally efficient method to calculate the time-dependent equilibrium Green's functions, including the anomalous Green's functions of superconductors, to capture the time-evolution in large inhomogeneous systems. The EPOCH method generalizes the Chebyshev wave-packet propagation method from quantum chemistry and efficiently incorporates the Fermi-Dirac statistics that is needed for equilibrium quantum condensed matter systems. The computational cost of EPOCH scales only linearly in the system degrees of freedom, generating an extremely efficient algorithm also for very large systems. We investigate the induced superconducting pair correlations in junctions between a conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductor and a disordered normal metal. Decomposing the pair amplitude based on its symmetries in the time domain, we demonstrate that the odd-time, or equivalently odd-frequency, spin-singlet $p$-wave correlations are both significant in size and entirely robust against random non-magnetic disorder. We find that these odd-frequency correlations can even be generated by disorder. We theoretically investigate the exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in ultrathin Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator films by taking into account the low-energy states produced by the impurities. We find that the locally induced impurity resonances strongly influence the exchange interaction between magnetic moments. In particular, we find a non-collinear alignment being more favorable than the collinear ferromagnetic alignment preferred when impurity states are ignored and only the pristine topological insulator band structure is considered. Moreover, we show that by applying of an electric field perpendicular to the ultrathin film, the exchange interaction can be drastically enhanced. This opens for the possibility of highly tunable magnetism by electric field.

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model describes fermions that hop on a one-dimensional chain with staggered hopping amplitude, where the unit cell contains two sites, or two sublattices. In this work we consider the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with superconducting pairing and show that the sublattice index acts as an additional quantum number in the classification of Cooper pairs, giving rise to inter- and intra-sublattice odd-frequency pair correlations in the bulk. Interestingly, this system behaves as a two band superconductor where the bulk odd-frequency correlations depend solely on the intrinsic staggering properties of the model. In general, odd-frequency correlations coexist with even-frequency correlations in both the trivial and topological phases, with comparable and even larger odd-frequency amplitudes at the topological phase transition points at low frequencies, due to the closing of the energy gap at these points. We perform ab-initio calculations on Bi$_\mathrm{{Se}}$ antisite defects in the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, finding strong low-energy defect resonances with a spontaneous ferromagnetism, fixed to an out-of-plane orientation due to an exceptional large magnetic anisotropy energy. For antisite defects in the surface layer, we find semi-itinerant ferromagnetism and strong hybridization with the Dirac surface state, generating a finite energy gap. For deeper lying defects, such hybridization is largely absent, the magnetic moments becomes more localized, and no energy gap is present., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Odd-frequency superconductivity is an exotic phase of matter in which Cooper pairing between electrons is entirely dynamical in nature. Majorana zero modes exhibit pure odd-frequency superconducting correlations due to their specific properties. Thus, by tunnel-coupling an array of Majorana zero modes to a spin-polarized wire, it is in principle possible to engineer a bulk one-dimensional odd-frequency spinless $s$-wave superconductor. We here point out that each tunnel coupling element, being dependent on a large number of material-specific parameters, is generically complex with sample variability in both its magnitude and phase. Using this, we demonstrate that, upon averaging over phase-disorder, the induced superconducting, including odd-frequency, correlations in the spin-polarized wire are significantly suppressed. We perform both a rigorous analytical evaluation of the disorder-averaged $T$-matrix in the wire, as well as numerical calculations based on a tight-binding model, and find that the anomalous, i.e. superconducting, part of the $T$-matrix is highly suppressed with phase disorder. We also demonstrate that this suppression is concurrent with the filling of the single-particle excitation gap by smearing the near-zero frequency peaks, due to formation of bound states that satisfy phase-matching conditions between spatially separated Majorana zero modes. Our results convey important constraints on the parameter control needed in practical realizations of Majorana zero mode structures and suggest that the achievement of a bulk 1D odd-$\omega$ superconductivity from MZMs demand full control of the system parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been presumed to be immune to proximity-induced spin-singlet superconducting pairing due to a chirality blockade of the regular Andreev reflection. In this work we study all possible superconducting pairing induced in a WSM sandwiched between two conventional superconductors in a Josephson junction setup. We confirm that, while conventional intra-orbital $s$-wave pairing is present on the surface of the WSM, it cannot propagate into the bulk due to the chirality blockade. However, inter-orbital $s$-wave pairing, with both even-frequency spin-singlet and odd-frequency mixed-spin triplet symmetry, propagates into the bulk of the WSM, as do several $p$-wave symmetries.
