Abstract

This paper describes the angular distribution of $\Lambda_b^0\to \Lambda(\to pK^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. A full expression is given for the case of multiple interfering spin-states with spin $\leq \tfrac{5}{2}$. This distribution is relevant for future measurements of $\Lambda_b^0\to pK^-\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, where different states cannot easily be separated based on their mass alone. New observables arise when considering spin-$\tfrac{5}{2}$ states as well as interference between states. An exploration of their behaviour for a variety of beyond the Standard Model scenarios shows that some of these observables exhibit interesting sensitivity to the Wilson coefficients involved in $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. Others are insensitive to the Wilson coefficients and can be used to verify the description of $\Lambda_b^0\to \Lambda$ form-factors. A basis of weighting functions that can be used to determine all of the angular observables described in this paper in a moment analysis of the experimental data is also provided., Comment: Final version of the paper including comments during journal review

Abstract

TORCH is a novel time-of-flight detector, designed to provide charged particle identification of pions, kaons and protons in the momentum range 2-20 GeV/c over a 9.5 m flight path. A detector module, comprising a 10mm thick quartz plate, provides a source of Cherenkov photons which propagate via total internal reflection to one end of the plate. Here, the photons are focused onto an array of custom-designed Micro-Channel Plate Photo-Multiplier Tubes (MCP-PMTs) which measure their positions and arrival times. The target time resolution per photon is 70 ps which, for 30 detected photons per charged particle, results in a 10-15 ps time-of-flight resolution. A 1.25 m length TORCH prototype module employing two MCP-PMTs has been developed, and tested at the CERN PS using a charged hadron beam of 8 GeV/c momentum. The construction of the module, the properties of the MCP-PMTs and the readout electronics are described. Measurements of the collected photon yields and single-photon time resolutions have been performed as a function of particle entry points on the plate and compared to expectations. Abstract

We investigate the ten independent local form-factors relevant to the $b$-baryon decay $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda \ell^+\ell^-$, combining information of lattice QCD and dispersive bounds. We propose a novel parametrization of the form factors in terms of orthonormal polynomials that diagonalizes the form factor contributions to the dispersive bounds. This is a generalization of the unitarity bounds developed for meson-to-meson form-factors. In contrast to ad-hoc parametrizations of these form factors, our parametrization provides a degree of control of the form-factor uncertainties at large hadronic recoil. This is of phenomenological interest for theoretical predictions of, e.g., $\Lambda_b\to \Lambda \gamma$ and $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda \ell^+\ell^-$ decay processes., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

TORCH is a large-area, high-precision time-of-flight (ToF) detector designed to provide charged-particle identification in the 2-20 GeV$/c$ momentum range. Prompt Cherenkov photons emitted by charged hadrons as they traverse a 10mm quartz radiator are propagated to the periphery of the detector, where they are focused onto an array of micro-channel plate photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMTs). The position and arrival times of the photons are used to infer the particles' time of entry in the radiator, to identify hadrons based on their ToF. The MCP-PMTs were developed with an industrial partner to satisfy the stringent requirements of the TORCH detector. The requirements include a finely segmented anode, excellent time resolution, and a long lifetime. Over an approximately 10m flight distance, the difference in ToF between a kaon and a pion with 10GeV$/c$ momentum is 35ps, leading to a 10-15ps per track timing resolution requirement. On average 30 photons per hadron are detected, which translates to a single-photon time resolution of 70ps. The TORCH research and development program aims to demonstrate the validity of the detector concept through laboratory and beam tests, results from which are presented. A timing resolution of 70-100ps was reached in beam tests, approaching the TORCH design goal. Laboratory timing tests consist of operating the MCP-PMTs coupled to the TORCH readout electronics. Abstract

EOS is an open-source software for a variety of computational tasks in flavor physics. Its use cases include theory predictions within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, Bayesian inference of theory parameters from experimental and theoretical likelihoods, and simulation of pseudo events for a number of signal processes. EOS ensures high-performance computations through a C++ back-end and ease of usability through a Python front-end. To achieve this flexibility, EOS enables the user to select from a variety of implementations of the relevant decay processes and hadronic matrix elements at run time. In this article, we describe the general structure of the software framework and provide basic examples. Abstract

Following updated and extended measurements of the full angular distribution of the decay $\Lambda_b\to \Lambda(\to p\,\pi^-)\mu^+\mu^-$ by the LHCb collaborations, as well as a new measurement of the $\Lambda \to p \pi^-$ decay asymmetry parameter by the BESIII collaboration, we study the impact of these results on searches for non-standard effects in exclusive $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ decays. To this end, we constrain the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_{9}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10}$ of the numerically leading dimension-six operators in the weak effective Hamiltonian, in addition to the relevant nuisance parameters. In stark contrast to previous analyses of this decay mode, the changes in the updated experimental results lead us to find very good compatibility with both the Standard Model and with the $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ anomalies observed in rare $B$-meson decays. We provide a detailed analysis of the impact of the partial angular distribution, the full angular distribution, and the $\Lambda_b\to \Lambda\mu^+\mu^-$ branching fraction on the Wilson coefficients. 9. Functional dissection of myosin motors from the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum

Abstract

The symptoms of malaria arise from cycles of red blood cell (RBC) invasion by Plasmodium spp. merozoites. This process has been studied by video microscopy for 50 years and the ordered stages of invasion have been well established for much longer. Merozoite entry is rapid and actively powered by a parasite acto-myosin motor. The canonical model for force production depends on arrays of a myosin motor (MyoA) working against short actin filaments connected to the external substrate. However, the molecular processes that underlie these well-described events, and the energetic barriers that the merozoite must overcome, remain unclear. Though MyoA has been shown to be critical for invasion of other parasite stages and species, the importance of MyoA has not been shown for Plasmodium falciparum merozoites. Work on other parasites has uncovered retrograde flow of plasma membrane and host cell activity as other sources of force production, casting doubt on the mechanical role of MyoA. Answering these questions has been hampered by limited structural understanding of the acto-myosin system in merozoites. In this study, conditional genetic modification of P. falciparum MyoA (PfMyoA) showed it is critical for invasion. The transgenic platform was then adapted for other motor proteins, showing that PfMyoA light chain PfELC is also critical but auxiliary motor PfMyoB is not. The range of defects in these mutants uncovered three distinct energetic barriers during merozoite invasion. Finally, probing the arrangement of the motor by electron microscopy revealed a multi-member complex of PfMyoA. Together, this study re-affirms the importance of PfMyoA for merozoite invasion and illuminates the energetic barriers that the motor is required to overcome.

Abstract

The TORCH time-of-flight detector is designed to provide particle identification in the momentum range 2-10 GeV/c over large areas. The detector exploits prompt Cherenkov light produced by charged particles traversing a 10 mm thick quartz plate. The photons propagate via total internal reflection and are focused onto a detector plane comprising position-sensitive Micro-Channel Plate Photo-Multiplier Tubes (MCP-PMT) detectors. The goal is to achieve a single-photon timing resolution of 70 ps, giving a timing precision of 15 ps per charged particle by combining the information from around 30 detected photons. The MCP-PMT detectors have been developed with a commercial partner (Photek Ltd, UK), leading to the delivery of a square tube of active area 53 $\times$ 53mm$^2$ with a granularity of 8 $\times$ 128 pixels equivalent. A large-scale demonstrator of TORCH, having a quartz plate of dimensions 660 $\times$ 1250 $\times$ 10 mm$^3$ and read out by a pair of MCP-PMTs with custom readout electronics, has been verified in a test beam campaign at the CERN PS. Preliminary results indicate that the required performance is close to being achieved. 12. Sequential Bargaining in the Field: Evidence from Millions of Online Bargaining Interactions*

Abstract

We study patterns of behavior in bilateral bargaining situations using a rich new data set describing back-and-forth sequential bargaining occurring in over 25 million listings from eBay's Best Offer platform. We compare observed behavior to predictions from the large theoretical bargaining literature. One-third of bargaining interactions end in immediate agreement, as predicted by complete-information models. The majority of sequences play out differently, ending in disagreement or delayed agreement, which have been rationalized by incomplete information models. We find that stronger bargaining power and better outside options improve agents' outcomes. Robust empirical findings that existing models cannot rationalize include reciprocal (and gradual) concession behavior and delayed disagreement. Another robust pattern at odds with existing theory is that players exhibit a preference for making and accepting offers that split the difference between the two most recent offers. These observations suggest that behavioral norms, which are neither incorporated nor explained by existing theories, play an important role in the success of bargaining outcomes.

To achieve this level of performance, a time resolution of 15 ps per incident particle is required. TORCH uses a plane of quartz of 1 cm thickness as a source of Cherenkov photons, which are then focussed onto square Micro-Channel Plate Photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs) of active area 53 x 53 mm^2, segmented into 8 x 128 pixels equivalent. A small-scale TORCH demonstrator with a customised MCP-PMT and associated readout electronics has been successfully operated in a 5 GeV/c mixed pion/proton beam at the CERN PS facility. Abstract

Rare $b \to s\ell^+\ell^-$ flavour-changing-neutral-current processes provide important tests of the Standard Model of particle physics. Angular observables in exclusive $b \to s\ell^+\ell^-$ processes can be particularly powerful as they allow hadronic uncertainties to be controlled. Amongst the exclusive processes that have been studied by experiments, the decay $\Lambda_b\to \Lambda\ell^+\ell^-$ is unique in that the $\Lambda_b$ baryon can be produced polarised. In this paper, we derive an expression for the angular distribution of the $\Lambda_b\to \Lambda\ell^+\ell^-$ decay for the case where the $\Lambda_b$ baryon is produced polarised. This extends the number of angular observables in this decay from 10 to 34. Standard Model expectations for the new observables are provided and the sensitivity of the observables is explored under a variety of new physics models. At low-hadronic recoil, four of the new observables have a new short distance dependence that is absent in the unpolarised case. The remaining observables depend on the same short distance contributions as the unpolarised observables, but with different dependence on hadronic form-factors. These relations provide possibilities for novel tests of the SM that could be carried out with the data that will become available at the LHC or a future $e^+e^-$ collider.

Abstract

A method for analysing the hadronic resonance contributions in $\bar{B}^{0} \rightarrow \bar{K}^{*0}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decays is presented. This method uses an empirical model that relies on measurements of the branching fractions and polarisation amplitudes of final states involving $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ resonances, relative to the short-distance component, across the full dimuon mass spectrum of $\bar{B}^{0} \rightarrow \bar{K}^{*0}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ transitions. The model is in good agreement with existing calculations of hadronic non-local effects. The effect of this contribution to the angular observables is presented and it is demonstrated how the narrow resonances in the $q^{2}$ spectrum provide a dramatic enhancement to $CP$-violating effects in the short-distance amplitude. Abstract

One of the most interesting puzzles in particle physics today is that new physics is expected at the TeV energy scale to solve the hierarchy problem, and stabilise the Higgs mass, but so far no unambiguous signal of new physics has been found. Strong constraints on the energy scale of new physics can be derived from precision tests of the electroweak theory and from flavour-changing or CP-violating processes in strange, charm and beauty hadron decays. Decays that proceed via flavour-changing-neutral-current processes are forbidden at the lowest perturbative order in the Standard Model and are, therefore, rare. Rare $b$ hadron decays are playing a central role in the understanding of the underlying patterns of Standard Model physics and in setting up new directions in model building for new physics contributions. 30. Rare FCNC top, beauty and charm decays

Abstract

Rare flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) decays of top, beauty and charm quarks can provide a powerful probe for as yet unobserved particles. Recent results on FCNC $b \to s$, $c \to u$ and $t$ transitions from the LHC experiments are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the angular distribution of the $B^{0} \to K^{*0} \mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ decay, where a measurement performed by LHCb shows a local discrepancy of 3.7 standard deviations with respect to the SM prediction. Using the decay $B^{+} \to K^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\gamma$, LHCb have also been able to demonstrate the polarisation of photons produced in $b \to s\gamma$ transitions. 32. Examining the Impact of Class Difficulty on Transition and Success in College

Abstract

This study examines the impact of class difficulty on first-semester GPA, controlling for a number of precollege factors and the course load taken in the first semester. Although a large body of literature exists on the determinants of academic performance, class difficulty is often neglected in the literature. For this study, we created a new measure of class difficulty and included that in a regression model to explain student GPA across semesters as the student matriculates through college. We found that students who take more difficult classes tend to have lower GPAs in the first semester but higher GPAs during their second year of study. It is our contention that more difficult first-semester classes better prepare students for subsequently harder classes in their progress toward graduation.

Abstract

The rare decay $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ is a flavour changing neutral current decay with a high sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model. Nearly all theoretical predictions and all experimental measurements so far have assumed a $K^{\ast 0}$ P-wave that decays into the $K^+\pi^-$ final state. In this paper the addition of an S-wave within the $K^+\pi^-$ system of $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ and the subsequent impact of this on the angular distribution of the final state particles is explored. The inclusion of the S-wave causes a distinction between the values of the angular observables obtained from counting experiments and those obtained from fits to the angular distribution. The effect of a non-zero S-wave on an angular analysis of $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ is assessed as a function of dataset size and the relative size of the S-wave amplitude. An S-wave contribution, equivalent to what is measured in $B^0 \to J/\psi K^{\ast 0}$ at BaBar, leads to a significant bias on the angular observables for datasets of above 200 signal decays. Any future experimental analysis of the $K^+\pi^-\ell^+\ell^-$ final state will have to take the S-wave contribution into account., Comment: 20 pages

Abstract

Promising ways to search for New Physics effects in radiative penguin decays are in the angular analysis of $B_{d} \rightarrow K^{*0} \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$, in the measurement of direct CP violation in $\B_{d} \rightarrow K^{*0}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and a time dependent analysis of $B_{s} \rightarrow \phi \gamma$. All of these studies are being pursued at LHCb. Abstract

The LHCb experiment is one of four experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. It is the next generation of heavy flavour experiment, designed to study CP violating processes and rare decays in the B system and will benefit from the large b-quark production cross-section in ''S =14 T.eV protonproton collisions. This will enable LHCb to record large numbers of events even for rare decay modes such as Bd-K*IJ+IJ', with a branching fraction of 1.22+0 . 38 ,0.32 x 10-6, that is discussed in this thesis. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the photon detectors of LHCb's Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors and their associated front-end electronics, discussing measurements made on these photon detectors during laboratory testing and culminating in a series of beam tests. The beam tests measured the performance of a 1/10th scale prototype RICH detector, providing an estimate for the combined efficiency of the HPD's binary readout and charge collection of Ecollection X Ereadout = 82�±3%. The second part of this thesis reports on LHCb's sensitivity to the decay as Bd-K*IJ+ IJ' in a Monte Carlo study with one nominal year (2 fb�·1) of data. With this data set (of 7000 events) LHCb should be able to make, for the first time, a precision measurement of the kinematic distribution of the particles in the decay that in many new physics models can have large departures from the Standard Model (SM) prediction. Particular attention is paid to the forward-backward asymmetry of the muons which changes with the invariant mass of the muon pair and crosses zero at a well defined value with small theoretical error in the SM. LHCb's precision on this zero crossing point is estimated at �±0.43 GeV2.

Abstract

Evidence for the decays $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}\phi$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}\phi$ is reported with a significance of 3.6$\,\sigma$ and 4.3$\,\sigma$, respectively. The analysis employs $pp$ collision data at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7$, 8 and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}\phi) = (7.7\pm2.1\pm0.7\pm0.7)\times10^{-7}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}\phi)=(2.2\pm0.5\pm0.2\pm0.2)\times10^{-6}$. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic, and the third is related to the branching fraction of the $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$ decay, used for normalisation. By combining the branching fractions of the decays $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{(*)0}\phi$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{(*)0}\omega$, the $\omega$-$\phi$ mixing angle $\delta$ is constrained to be $\tan^2\delta = (3.6\pm0.7\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. An updated measurement of the branching fractions of the $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{(*)0}\phi$ decays, which can be used to determine the CKM angle $\gamma$, leads to $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}\phi)=(2.30\pm0.10 \pm 0.11\pm0.20)\times10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{*0}\phi) =(3.17\pm0.16 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.27)\times10^{-5}$., Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2023-003.html (LHCb public pages)

Abstract

A study of prompt $\Xi_{c}^{+}$ production in proton-lead collisions is performed with the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV in 2016 in $p$Pb and Pb$p$ collisions with an estimated integrated luminosity of approximately 12.5 and 17.4 nb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $\Xi_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section, as well as the $\Xi_{c}^{+}$ to $\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section ratio, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity and compared to latest theory predictions. The forward-backward asymmetry is also measured as a function of the $\Xi_{c}^{+}$ transverse momentum. Abstract

A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay $B_s^{0} \rightarrow \phi\phi$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6fb$^{-1}$. The CP-violating phase and direct CP-violation parameter are measured to be $\phi_s^{s\bar{s}s} = -0.042 \pm 0.075 \pm 0.009 $ rad and $|\lambda|=1.004\pm 0.030 \pm 0.009 $, respectively, assuming the same values for all polarization states of the $\phi\phi$ system. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb measurements using $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding $\phi_s^{s\bar{s}s} = -0.074 \pm 0.069 $ rad and $|\lambda|=1.009 \pm 0.030$. This is the most precise study of time-dependent CP violation in a penguin-dominated $B$ meson decay. The results are consistent with CP symmetry and with the Standard Model predictions. Abstract

A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay $B_s^{0}\rightarrow\phi\phi$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1}. The $\it{CP}$-violating phase and direct $\it{CP}$-violation parameter are measured to be $\phi_{s\bar{s}s} = -0.042 \pm 0.075 \pm 0.009 $ rad and $|\lambda|=1.004\pm 0.030 \pm 0.009 $, respectively, assuming the same values for all polarization states of the $\phi\phi$ system. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb measurements using $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding $\phi_{s\bar{s}s} = -0.074 \pm 0.069 $ rad and $|\lambda|=1.009 \pm 0.030$. This is the most precise study of time-dependent $\it{CP} $ violation in a penguin-dominated $B$ meson decay. 50. A screen analysis procedure for seismic slope stability

Abstract

Site-specific seismic slope stability analyses are required in California by the 1990 California Seismic Hazards Mapping Act for sites located within mapped hazard zones and scheduled for development with more than four single-family dwellings. A screen analysis is performed to distinguish sites for which only small ground deformations are likely from sites for which larger, more damaging landslide movements could occur. No additional analyses are required for sites that pass the screen, whereas relatively detailed analyses are required for sites that fail the screen. We present a screen analysis procedure that is based on a calibrated pseudo-static representation of seismic slope stability. The novel feature of the present screen procedure is that it accounts not only for the effects of ground motion amplitude on slope displacement, but also accounts for duration effects indirectly via the site seismicity. This formulation enables a more site-specific screen analysis than previous formulations that made a priori assumptions of seismicity/duration. This screen procedure has recently been adopted by the Landslide Hazard Implementation Committee for implementation by practicing engineers and engineering geologists in southern California.
