Mental health in the workplace is a societal challenge with serious economical and human costs. Most prevalent mental disorders in the workforce (e.g., depression), however, are preventable. There is widespread agreement about the favorable effects of nature exposure and consequently, nature-based interventions (NBI) in the workplace have been proposed as a cost-effective approach to promote good health among employees. The objective of the present study was to systematically review scientific evidence on the effectiveness of NBI to promote mental health and well-being among actual employees in actual workplace settings. The review was conducted and presented in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The literature search was performed on five databases (PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, CINHAL, and PsycINFO), hand-searching of field-specific journals, and the reference lists of retrieved papers over the past 5 years up to November (13 th , 2018). Studies were eligible for inclusion if they ( i) were randomized or nonrandomized controlled trials; ( ii) comprised samples of actual employees; ( iii) implemented a workplace-based intervention with exposure to nature; ( iv) included comparison conditions that displayed a clear contrast to NBIs; and ( v) investigated the quantitative effects on mental health or well-being. No restrictions on type of employees or workplace, publication period, or language of the publication were set. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane's RoB2 tool. Narrative synthesis was performed due to large heterogeneity in outcome variables. Of the 510 articles identified, 10 NBIs (nine papers) met the eligibility criteria. The outcomes were grouped in five categories: ( i) mental health indices, ( ii) cognitive ability, ( iii) recovery and restoration, ( iv) work and life satisfaction, and ( v) psychophysiological indicators. Narrative synthesis indicates consistently positive effects on mental health indices and cognitive ability, while mixed results were found for the other outcome categories. Caution must be given when interpreting the current evidence in this emerging research field because of the diversity of NBIs and the overall high risk of bias in the individual studies. Although in this field often researchers have to balance scientific rigor and ecological validity, there is a need for large, well-designed and rigorously conducted trials grounded in contemporary theories., (Copyright © 2020 Gritzka, MacIntyre, Dörfel, Baker-Blanc and Calogiuri.)

The patterns of brain dynamics were studied during resting state on a macroscopic scale for control subjects and multiple sclerosis patients. Macroscopic brain dynamics is defined after successive coarse-grainings and selection of significant patterns and transitions based on Markov representation of brain activity. The resulting networks show that control dynamics is merely organized according to a single principal pattern whereas patients dynamics depict more variable patterns. Centrality measures are used to extract core dynamical pattern in brain dynamics and classification technique allow to define MS dynamics with relevant error rate., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The present work focused on the study of fluctuations of cortical activity across time scales in young and older healthy adults. The main objective was to offer a comprehensive characterization of the changes of brain (cortical) signal variability during aging, and to make the link with known underlying structural, neurophysiological, and functional modifications, as well as aging theories. We analyzed electroencephalogram (EEG) data of young and elderly adults, which were collected at resting state and during an auditory oddball task. We used a wide battery of metrics that typically are separately applied in the literature, and we compared them with more specific ones that address their limits. Our procedure aimed to overcome some of the methodological limitations of earlier studies and verify whether previous findings can be reproduced and extended to different experimental conditions. In both rest and task conditions, our results mainly revealed that EEG signals presented systematic age-related changes that were time-scale-dependent with regard to the structure of fluctuations (complexity) but not with regard to their magnitude. Namely, compared with young adults, the cortical fluctuations of the elderly were more complex at shorter time scales, but less complex at longer scales, although always showing a lower variance. Additionally, the elderly showed signs of spatial, as well as between, experimental conditions dedifferentiation. By integrating these so far isolated findings across time scales, metrics, and conditions, the present study offers an overview of age-related changes in the fluctuation electrocortical activity while making the link with underlying brain dynamics.

Objective: Many neurosurgical procedures are now performed with the patient aware in order to allow interactions between the patient and healthcare professionals. These procedures include awake brain surgery and spinal cord stimulation (SCS), lead placement for treatment of refractory chronic back and leg pain. Neurosurgical procedures under local anaesthesia require optimal intraoperative cooperation of the patient and all personnel involved in surgery. In addition to accommodating this extra source of intraoperative information all other necessary sources of data relevant to the procedure must be presented. The concept of an operating room dedicated to neurosurgical procedures performed aware and accommodating these concepts is presented, and some evidence for improvements in outcome presented, deriving from a series of patients implanted with spinal cord stimulators before and after the operating theatre was brought into service., Results and Discussion: In addition to the description, two videos demonstrate the facility online. Beyond this qualitative evidence, quantitative improvement in patient outcome is evidenced by the series presented: 91.3% of patients operated in the awake anaesthesia-dedicated theatre obtained adequate low back pain coverage, versus 60.0% for patients operated before (p = 0.028)., Conclusion: The concept of such an operating room is a step in improving the outcome by improving the presentation of all types of information to the operating room staff most notably in the example of aware procedures.

Background: This is a position paper from the 2nd International Bone Research Association (IBRA) Symposium for Condylar Fracture Osteosynthesis 2012 was held at Marseille, succeeding the first congress in Strasbourg, France, in 2007. The goal of this IBRA symposium and this paper was to evaluate current trends and potential changes of treatment strategies for mandibular condylar fractures, which remain controversial over the past decades., Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we enrolled the consensus based on the panel of experts and participants in the IBRA Symposium 2012. The outcomes of interest were the panel and electronic votes on management of condylar base, neck and head fractures, and panel votes on endoscopic and paediatric condylar fractures. Appropriate descriptive and univariate statistics were used., Results: The consensus derived from 14 experts and 41 participant surgeons, using 12 case scenarios and 27 statements. The experts and participants had similar decision on the treatment of condylar base, neck and head fractures, as well as similar opinion on complications of condylar fracture osteosynthesis. They had a parallel agreement on using open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) as treatment of choice for condylar base and neck fractures in adults. Endoscopic approaches should be considered for selected cases, such as condylar base fractures with lateral displacement. There was also a growing tendency to perform ORIF in condylar head fractures. The experts also agreed to treat children (>12 years old) in the same way as adults and to consider open reduction in severely displaced and dislocated fractures even in younger children. Nevertheless, non-surgical treatment should be the first choice for children <6 years of age. The decision to perform surgery in children was based on factors influencing facial growth, appropriate age for ORIF, and disagreement to use resorbable materials in children., Conclusions: The experts and participating surgeons had comparable opinion on management of condylar fractures and complications of ORIF. Compared to the first Condylar Fracture Symposium 2007 in Strasbourg, ORIF may now be considered as the gold standard for both condylar base and neck fractures with displacement and dislocation. Although ORIF in condylar head fractures in adults and condylar fractures in children with mixed dentition is highly recommended, but this recommendation requires further investigations., (Copyright © 2014 European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery. The disturbance of cortical communication has been hypothesized as an important factor in the appearance of cognitive impairment in (MS). Cortical communication is quantified here in control subjects and patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) on the basis of mean coherence in the δ, θ, α, β and γ bands and using mutual information computed between pairs of bipolar EEG signals recorded during resting condition. Each patient received also a cognitive assessment using a battery of neuropsychological tests specific to cognitive deficits in MS. No difference was observed for the coherence indices whereas inter-hemispheric and right hemisphere mutual information is significantly lower in patients with MS than in control subjects. Moreover, inter-hemispheric mutual information decrease significantly with illness duration and right mutual information differentiate cognitively deficient and non-deficient patients. Mutual information allows to quantify the cortical communication in patients with RRMS and is related to clinical characteristics. Cortical communication quantified in a resting state might be a potential marker for the neurological damage induced by RRMS.

Introduced by Shannon as a "rate of actual transmission," mutual information rate (MIR) is an extension of mutual information to a pair of dynamical processes. We show a delay-independence theorem, according to which MIR is not sensitive to a time shift between the two processes. Numerical studies of several benchmark situations confirm that this theoretical asymptotic property remains valid for realistic finite sequences. Estimations based on block entropies and a causal state machine algorithm perform better than an estimation based on a Lempel-Ziv compression algorithm provided that block length and maximum history length, respectively, can be chosen larger than the delay. MIR is thus a relevant index for measuring nonlinear correlations between two experimental or simulated sequences when the transmission delay (in input-output devices) or dephasing (in coupled systems) is variable or unknown.

World War I is still present for its millions of dead and wounded soldiers. New types of wounds came unexpected, and the military services were necessarily unprepared. Wounds in the face were so frequent and awful that new wards had to be organized and new methods to be invented. Among great persalities in the field are to be listed Morestin, Dufourmentel, Ginestet, Gillies, Joseph, and Kazandjian.

Tinnitus, also called phantom auditory perception, is a major health problem in western countries. As such, a significant amount of effort has been devoted to understanding its mechanisms, including studies in animals wherein a supposed "tinnitus state" can be induced. Here, we studied on the same awake animals the effects of a high-dose of salicylate and of an acoustic trauma both at levels known to induce tinnitus. Recordings of cortical activity (local field potentials) from chronically implanted electrodes in the same animals under each condition allowed direct comparison of the effects of salicylate and trauma (noise trauma was carried out several days after full recovery from salicylate administration). Salicylate induced a systematic and reversible increase in amplitude of cortical responses evoked by tone bursts over a wide range of frequencies and intensities. The effects of noise trauma, though much more variable than those of salicylate, resulted in both increases and decreases in the amplitude of cortical responses. These alterations of cortical response amplitudes likely reflect associated hypoacusis and hyperacusis. The effects of salicylate administration and noise trauma on spontaneous activity were also studied. Fourier analysis did not reveal any increase in power within any given frequency band; rather, both treatments induced a decrease of power spectrum over a relatively broad frequency band (approximately 10-30 Hz). Entropy rate of spontaneous activity, a measure of complexity (temporal correlations), was found to decrease after salicylate but not after acoustic trauma. The present data on evoked potentials confirm salicylate effects at the cortical level and partially extend such effects to acoustic trauma. While the present study showed that both salicylate and noise trauma induced some changes of spontaneous activity in auditory cortex, none of these changes are interpretable in terms of potential neural correlate of tinnitus., (Copyright 2010 IBRO. There are no data in the literature on colonisation of peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) inserted by French prehospital emergency and resuscitation service teams (SMUR). In a descriptive and prospective study we evaluated colonisation of PVCs inserted and managed solely by a SMUR team. A total of 171 PVCs were analysed. Bacteriological results were positive for seven catheters (4.09%/threshold=10(2)cfu/mL). Our analyses of the characteristics of patients and interventions show a significantly higher number of elderly patients among those colonised (P=0.02) with less satisfactory venous access (P=0.006) and smaller catheter bores (P=0.009). No differences were seen regarding the other evaluation criteria: gender, aetiology, site of intervention, number and site of venepuncture procedures, blood pressure and duration of catheterisation. The absolute value of colonisation seen in our study appears consistent with those reported in the literature, but no comparisons are possible due to widely divergent catheterisation times between published work (days) and our own data (minutes). Our results suggest a reassessment of current recommendations of routine changeover of these catheters, with the attendant discomfort for patients and cost in terms of time and money. We recommend a randomised study comparing catheter colonisation levels associated with routine catheter replacement with targeted replacement based on risk factors.

While entropy per unit time is a meaningful index to quantify the dynamic features of experimental time series, its estimation is often hampered in practice by the finite length of the data. We here investigate the performance of entropy estimation procedures, relying either on block entropies or Lempel-Ziv complexity, when only very short symbolic sequences are available. Heuristic analytical arguments point at the influence of temporal correlations on the bias and statistical fluctuations, and put forward a reduced effective sequence length suitable for error estimation. Numerical studies are conducted using, as benchmarks, the wealth of different dynamic regimes generated by the family of logistic maps and stochastic evolutions generated by a Markov chain of tunable correlation time. Practical guidelines and validity criteria are proposed. For instance, block entropy leads to a dramatic overestimation for sequences of low entropy, whereas it outperforms Lempel-Ziv complexity at high entropy. As a general result, the quality of entropy estimation is sensitive to the sequence temporal correlation hence self-consistently depends on the entropy value itself, thus promoting a two-step procedure. Lempel-Ziv complexity is to be preferred in the first step and remains the best estimator for highly correlated sequences.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm. It can arise de novo or in a preexisting benign ameloblastoma. Most cases arise in older patients. The first case report is rare and concerns a man with an ameloblastic carcinoma primary-type of the maxillary. The second case concerns a woman with an ameloblastic carcinoma secondary-type developed on a preexisting follicular ameloblastoma of the mandible. Both patients benefited from an adjuvant radiochemotherapy. The prognosis of such carcinoma must remain guarded over an observation period of several years because of the proximity of the lesion to vital structures.

We studied the influence of a dental occlusion perturbation on postural control. The tests were performed in three dental occlusion conditions: (Rest Position: no dental contact, Maximal Intercuspal Occlusion: maximal dental contact, and Thwarted Laterality Occlusion: simulation of a dental malocclusion) and four postural conditions: static (stable platform) and dynamic (unstable platform), with eyes open and eyes closed. A decay of postural control was noted between the Rest Position and Thwarted Laterality Occlusion conditions with regard to average speed and power indexes in dynamic conditions and with eyes closed. However, the head position and stabilization were not different from those in the other experimental conditions, which means that the same functional goal was reached with an increase in the total energetic cost. This work shows that dental occlusion differently affects postural control, depending on the static or dynamic conditions. Indeed, dental occlusion impaired postural control only in dynamic postural conditions and in absence of visual cues. The sensory information linked to the dental occlusion comes into effect only during difficult postural tasks and its importance grows as the other sensory cues become scarce.

This study assessed the prognostic value of several markers involved in gliomagenesis, and compared it with that of other clinical and imaging markers already used. Four-hundred and sixteen adult patients with newly diagnosed glioma were included over a 3-year period and tumour suppressor genes, oncogenes, MGMT and hTERT expressions, losses of heterozygosity, as well as relevant clinical and imaging information were recorded. This prospective study was based on all adult gliomas. Analyses were performed on patient groups selected according to World Health Organization histoprognostic criteria and on the entire cohort. The endpoint was overall survival, estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate analysis was followed by multivariate analysis according to a Cox model. p14(ARF), p16(INK4A) and PTEN expressions, and 10p 10q23, 10q26 and 13q LOH for the entire cohort, hTERT expression for high-grade tumours, EGFR for glioblastomas, 10q26 LOH for grade III tumours and anaplastic oligodendrogliomas were found to be correlated with overall survival on univariate analysis and age and grade on multivariate analysis only. This study confirms the prognostic value of several markers. However, the scattering of the values explained by tumour heterogeneity prevents their use in individual decision-making.

Bisphosphonates are potent osteoclastic inhibitors that are indicated in the prevention of bone complications. They could also be of interest in the prevention of bone metastases. Several recent international publications have highlighted the onset of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in patients treated with bisphosphonates. These osteonecroses manifest in the form of bone exposure, recent tooth mobility, swelling and inflammation and, occasionally, localised pain but they can remain asymptomatic for weeks or even months. The prevalence of these osteonecroses in cancer patients treated with bisphosphonates could range from 1 to 10%. In most cases (60 to 80%), ONJ develops after alveolo-dental surgery (e.g. tooth extraction). Length of exposure to bisphosphonate probably increases the risk. Our recommendations regarding the diagnosis, classification, prevention and treatment of cases of ONJ observed during bisphosphonate administration are based on published studies and our experience. It is obvious that the use of bisphosphonates is undoubtedly beneficial in the treatment of bone complications but the incidence of ONJ during long-term treatments and at high doses warrants preventive measures. These measures are straightforward : bucco-dental repair prior to treatment, good hygiene and regular monitoring during treatment. Current, non-invasive procedures are still permitted. In other cases, the suspension of treatment is indicated until healing is complete. The increase in the incidence of ONJs, serious adverse events, raises the issue regarding duration and administration of bisphosphonate treatment in the management of bone metastases. Studies are currently underway in an attempt to answer this issue.

Case Report: A 13-year-old boy presented with a history of intracranial hypertension. Radiologic studies revealed triventricular hydrocephalus secondary to a space-occupying lesion in the pineal region. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy was performed to treat hydrocephalus, and the lesion was biopsied. Complete resection of the tumor was subsequently performed. After a period of uncertainty, the diagnosis of papillary tumor of the pineal region was established. Tumor bed radiotherapy at a dose of 50 Gy was associated. With a follow-up of 15 months, the postoperative course was satisfactory with return to school and no residual tumor on magnetic resonance imaging., Conclusion: Papillary tumors of the pineal region constitute a rare entity, with a difficult diagnosis, an uncertain prognosis, and a high risk of local recurrence; they must be treated by a combination of surgery and radiotherapy. The only identified prognostic factor is the complete or incomplete nature of surgical resection.

To understand how information is coded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) we need to decipher the relationship between neural activity and tactile stimuli. Such a relationship can be formally measured by mutual information. The present study was designed to determine how S1 neuronal populations code for the multidimensional kinetic features (i.e. random, time-varying patterns of force) of complex tactile stimuli, applied at different locations of the rat forepaw. More precisely, the stimulus localization and feature extraction were analyzed as two independent processes, using both rate coding and temporal coding strategies. To model the process of stimulus kinetic feature extraction, multidimensional stimuli were projected onto lower dimensional subspace and then clustered according to their similarity. Different combinations of stimuli clustering were applied to differentiate each stimulus identification process. Information analyses show that both processes are synergistic, this synergy is enhanced within the temporal coding framework. The stimulus localization process is faster than the stimulus feature extraction process. The latter provides more information quantity with rate coding strategy, whereas the localization process maximizes the mutual information within the temporal coding framework. Therefore, combining mutual information analysis with robust clustering of complex stimuli provides a framework to study neural coding mechanisms related to complex stimuli discrimination.

Glial tumours are a devastating, poorly understood condition carrying a gloomy prognosis for which clinicians sorely lack reliable predictive parameters facilitating a sound treatment strategy. Tp73, a p53 family member, expresses two main classes of isoforms--transactivatory activity (TA)p73 and DeltaTAp73--exhibiting tumour suppressor gene and oncogene properties, respectively. The authors examined their expression status in high- and low-grade adult gliomas. Isoform-specific real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used for the analysis of Tp73 isoform transcript expression in a series of 51 adult patients harbouring glial tumours, in order to compare tumour grades with each other, and with non-tumoural samples obtained from epileptic patients as well. Our data demonstrate increase of TAp73 and DeltaTAp73 transcript levels at onset and early stage of the disease. We also show that DeltaEx2-3 isoform expression in low-grade tumours anticipates clinical and imaging progression to higher grades, and correlates to the patients' survival. Expression levels of P1 promoter generated Tp73 isoforms--and particularly DeltaEx2-3--indeed allow for prediction of the clinical progression of low-grade gliomas in adults. Our data are the first such molecular biology report regarding low-grade tumours and as such should be of help for sound decision-making.

Purpose: A case of schwannoma of the cauda equina in which the initial manifestation was visual loss, due to papilledema, is described., Observation: A 56-year-old man presented a history of 1 month of progressively blurred vision. On examination, visual acuity was 20/1,000 due to bilateral papilledema without spinal symptoms or neurological signs. Brain computed tomography demonstrated a nonobstructive hydrocephalus. He underwent a ventriculoperitoneal shunt without improvement. One month later, he complained of disturbance while walking associated with lower back pain. A lumbar puncture revealed an increased opening pressure. Analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid demonstrated an elevated protein level (6.8 g/l). Spinal magnetic resonance imaging showed a neurinoma of the cauda equina. We performed complete surgical resection and the histopathology diagnosis was schwannoma. Neurological dysfunctions resolved except visual acuity due to bilateral optic atrophy., Discussion: The association of papilledema and spinal tumor is an unusual but well-known phenomenon. Several theories have been proposed to explain the development of increased intracranial pressure in such cases but the exact physiopathology remains unknown., Conclusion: Spinal cord tumor should be considered when acute papilledema associated with normal brain computed tomography and high cerebrospinal fluid protein levels are encountered. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging should then be performed.

MGMT (O6 methyl guanine methyl transferase) is a gene involved in DNA repair. Its mechanism of action is to remove alkyl groups created by alkylating chemotherapy and therefore induces chemoresistances. Recent studies show that this gene expression seems to be related to the promoter's methylation, which could predict a possible chemosensitivity. The study of MGMT could be of some therapeutic and prognostic interest. Few series of oligodendrogliomas have been published and their results appear to be controversial. This is probably due to both tumour heterogeneity and multiple parameters associated with chemosensitivity. To date, it thus appears difficult to choose the adjuvant treatment according to the sole status of MGMT.
