EMSO is a distributed Research Infrastructure currently comprising nine Regional Facilities (RFs) and three shallow water test sites, strategically located all the way from the southern entrance of the Arctic Ocean across to the North Atlantic through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Since the beginning of 2021 Norway has been integrated as a new EMSO ERIC member, extending the geographical coverage to the Nordic Sea and the Arctic. EMSO’s extension will benefit from an experienced team managing moored observatories, ocean gliders and the Mohn Ridge Seafloor and Water Column Observatory.

Since 2010, the EMSO Azores non-cabled deep sea observatory acquires scientific data on the Lucky Strike vent field on the mid Atlantic ridge. This paper presents the marine infrastructure of EMSO Azores observatory needed to acquire and transmit data in near real time 24/day during six years. It details technical results obtained during this period.

This report was written in the framework of Work Package 7, “International and European networking of fixed-point observatories”, in a task dedicated to the further development of collaboration with European and non-European fledgling Eulerian observing systems that are not directly supported in the FixO3 programme. The document reports on recent development of European and non-European observatory systems and on communication status with non-European observatory systems.

Following parallel reflections within existing groups of European stakeholders of marine and submarine measurement data series, this consortium agreement is proposed to them in order to organize their relationship in a perennial network fostering production, access and exploitation of these data., Faisant suite aux réflexions menées au sein de groupes existants de parties prenantes européennes des séries de données de mesures marines et sous-marines, cet accord de consortium leur est proposé en vue d'organiser leurs relations dans un réseau pérenne visant à encourager la production, l'accès et l'exploitation de ces données.

JERICO RI, the Joint European Research Infrastructure for Coastal Observatories is an integrated pan-European multidisciplinary/multiplatform research infrastructure dedicated to an interdisciplinary appraisal of the coastal marine system environment. It is the coastal component of the future European Ocean Observing System. This Research Infrastructure is designing the future of coastal observation technology for harmonization and interoperability, advanced functionalities, cost efficiency and reliability. The technological developments of the JERICO-S3 EU project aim to strengthen and expand the infrastructure of the European network of coastal observatories. This objective will be achieved with new observing systems and platforms equipped with new technologies for interoperability, innovative sensor packages for multidisciplinary ecosystem monitoring, coupling physics, chemistry and biology. The planned technological developments consist in adapting interoperability standards, inter alia from the NeXOS and EMSODev European projects, developing on- board and on-server smart solutions for adaptive sampling, integrating technologies into dedicated sensor packages, further developing a capacity for high-frequency measurement of low trophic-level biological diversity and contaminants; hence filling critical gaps in the observation of the coastal ocean. An e-infrastructure is being developed and proof tested to integrate digital components (tools), best practices and documentation, from observation data and data products, to methods and coastal observation services

Ce document présente les activités de valorisation de l‘infrastructure EMSO-Açores et de la série de campagnes MoMARSAT entre 2010-2020. La série de campagnes MoMARSAT assure la maintenance annuelle de l'observatoire EMSO-Açores sur le champ hydrothermal Lucky Strike (https://doi.org/10.18142/130). Cet observatoire fond de mer est opéré depuis 2010 et vise à acquérir des séries temporelles ≥10 ans sur les processus hydrothermaux, tectoniques, volcaniques et les écosystèmes d'un site hydrothermal actif de la dorsale médio-Atlantique. Il fait partie du réseau européen EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory-ERIC - http://emso.eu/), soutenu en France par l'Infrastructure de Recherche (MESR) EMSO-FR dont le pilotage est assuré par une collaboration Ifremer-CNRS.
