Abstract

This study presents and analyzes the findings of a 2012 survey of member libraries belonging to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) about publishers' large journal bundles and compares the results to earlier surveys. The data illuminate five research questions: market penetration, journal bundle construction, collection format shifts, pricing models, and license terms. The structure of the product is still immature, particularly in defining content and developing sustainable pricing models. The typical "bundle" is something less than the full publisher's list. Neither market studies nor market forces have produced a sustainable new strategy for pricing and selling e-journals. Finally, the data reveal a complex history of managing license terms. Abstract

La Asociación de Bibliotecas de Investigación (ARL) ha recogido datos descriptivos de sus miembros durante la mayor parte del siglo XX. Debido al cambio en el ambiente bibliotecario con un creciente interés hacia el aprovechamiento de los recursos y el control de los gastos institucionales, se ha puesto en marcha la Iniciativa para Nuevas Medidas de la ARL con la intención de desarrollar formas diferentes e innovadoras para que las bibliotecas puedan mostrar su aportación a sus respectivas instituciones. Estas nuevas medidas ayudarán a los bibliotecarios a alejarse de los datos que únicamente describen lo que la biblioteca recibe y lo que aporta, para llegar a datos y programas que puedan ayudar a las bibliotecas a medir su rendimiento a lo largo del tiempo, además de comparar su eficacia con otras bibliotecas similares y mejorar sus propios procesos. Die „Aßociation of Research Libraries‟ (ARL) hat für den größten Teil des 20. Jahrhunderts von ihren Mitgliedern beschreibende Daten gesammelt. Da die Umgebung von Bibliotheken inzwischen ein erhöhtes Intereße an Rechenschaft und institutionsmäßigen Ergebnißen aufweist, ist eine „Neue ARL Bewertungsinitiative‟ eröffnet worden, um für Bibliotheken verschiedene und bahnbrechende Wege zu entwickeln, ihre Mitwirkungen an ihren Institutionen zu schildern. Diese neuen Maßnahmen werden Bibliotheken dabei unterstützen, von Daten abzurücken, die lediglich Investitionen und Produkte einer Bibliothek beschreiben, hin zu Daten und Programmen, die Bibliotheken helfen können, über eine bestimmte Zeit hinweg ihre Leistungen zu meßen, um sowohl dem Druck mit Maßstäben zu begegnen als auch ihre eigenen Handlungsweisen zu verbeßern. L'aßociation des bibliothèques de recherche (ARL) a collecté, auprès de ses membres, des statistiques descriptives pendant presque tout le XXe siècle. Alors que l'environnement des bibliothèques change dans le sens d'un intérêt accru porté à la performance comptable et au bénéfice tiré par l'institution de rattachement, l'initiative "Nouvelles Mesures" de l'ARL a été mise en oeuvre en vue de développer divers modes innovants de description de la contribution des bibliothèques au fonctionnement de leurs établißements de rattachement. The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has collected descriptive data from its members for the better part of the 20th century. These new measures will assist libraries to move away from data that just describe a library's inputs and outputs to data and programs that can help libraries measure their performance over time both to benchmark with peers and to improve their own operations.
