The altimetry mission TOPEX/Poseidon was operational between 1992 and 2005 and provided innovative insight into global and regional sea level changes and their variability. The correct modelling of the spacecraft orbit in precise orbit determination requires detailed information on the attitude of the spacecraft body and the solar array. Since the availability of attitude observations in form of quaternion data for this mission is limited, the nominal orientation model has to be used mainly. In this study, we compare the nominal and quaternion-based approaches of the TOPEX/Poseidon attitude realisation and validate the nominal model w.r.t. the observed attitude. We found good agreement between both approaches in the spacecraft-related roll, pitch, yaw, and solar array angles with slight differences of up to 0.31 ° on average. The best accordance is obtained in the yaw angles. A general angular offset of 0.12 ° and - 0.19 ° on average is found in the pitch and solar array angle differences, respectively. Parameters estimated in the orbit computation process also reflect the good agreement between both orientation models with slightly better results when using the observed attitude. However, in some intervals, the nominal model lacks detailed information about the correct attitude. These can be adjusted using the information from the quaternion data. Such intervals indicate off-nominal spacecraft attitude events like drifts or offsets. Purely geometrically analysed, mispointing in the roll and pitch components of about 0.25 ° results in a change of the altimeter phase centre position in the radial direction of about 7 mm, which directly impacts the sea-level heights determined from altimetry measurements. • New approach of a system- and station-dependent TOPEX/Poseidon SLR measurement correction function. • It is based on normal point observations and improves the mean orbit RMS from 33 cm to 1.97 cm. • The correction function and the station correction parameters are publicly available. The TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) altimetry mission with its main objectives to monitor variations of the global and regional sea level as well as ocean circulation is a milestone in Earth observation. The spacecraft was launched in 1992 and it is the predecessor mission of the Jason series and Sentinel-6A. For laser ranging measurements from the Earth to the spacecraft, T/P was equipped with a non-ideally designed annular retroreflector array. Its large dimensions of over 160 cm in diameter caused huge optical phase centre variations which limit the orbit accuracy. In this study, we developed a continuous, analytical correction function that counteracts both, phase centre variations at the spacecraft and station-related laser ranging measurement errors such as range biases. For most Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) ground stations that tracked the T/P spacecraft, an individual set of six correction parameters is estimated. The parameters are valid for the entire mission or, in some cases, for a defined period. The developed function uses the observation's viewing angles to determine a correction value which is added to the range measurement. Applying the measurement correction reduces the overall T/P mission root mean square fit of SLR residuals from 33.78 cm to 1.97 cm (1.59 cm for SLR core stations). External orbits based on the joint analysis of two different space-geodetic techniques are used to validate the quality of our improved orbit solution. The comparisons show good agreement. The mean values of the radial, transverse, and normal components differ by 0.0 , - 0.1 , and - 0.2 cm, respectively. To investigate the impact of the corrected orbit on sea level computations, a single-satellite crossover analysis is performed. When using the corrected measurements, the standard deviation of crossover differences reduces from 16 cm to 6 cm. The Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut der Technischen Universität München (DGFI-TUM) is one of the three Combination Centres of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service for the International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS). In its upcoming realization of the ITRS, the DTRF2020, DGFI-TUM will again correct for non-tidal loading (NTL) effects at the normal equation level. Next to the dedicated NTL data set for the ITRS 2020 realization provided by the Global Geophysical Fluid Center (GGFC), we also considered the data provided by the Earth System Modelling group of the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (ESMGFZ). Besides also comprising all NTL components (atmospheric, oceanic, hydrological) and being mass conserving, the ESMGFZ data has the advantage of daily availability and is already in use at DGFI-TUM. The decision for one or the other data set depends on their suitability for a secular terrestrial reference frame like the DTRF2020, which will be assessed in this work. Although we also compare the site displacements induced by NTL to the residuals of station positions of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems, we will not evaluate the quality of the underlying geophysical models per se. The two data sets differ w.r.t. the underlying hydrological models and the treatment of non-tidal oceanic loading, but the most relevant difference is given in terms of trends in the displacement time-series. The DTRF2014 solution is the latest ITRS realization of DGFI-TUM computed in the framework of ITRF2014. It is mainly characterized by two innovations: it is the first secular ITRS realization considering non-tidal loading corrections derived from geophysical models. Secondly, the DTRF2014 release includes all information necessary to approximate the observed instantaneous station positions at any epoch of the observation time span. Therefore, besides the classical SINEX and EOP files, the applied non-tidal loading corrections, the residual time series of station positions as well as the translation time series of the DTRF2014 origin are provided. The DTRF2014 is computed from the same input as ITRF2014 comprising the full history of observation data of the four space geodetic techniques Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS). The DTRF2014 solution is computed using the DGFI-TUM approach based on the combination of normal equation systems. With reference to the IERS Conventions, the origin of DTRF2014 is realized from SLR input data only. The scale of the DTRF2014 solution is assumed to be statistically equal for SLR and VLBI. This assumption is based on tests performed in the framework of the DTRF2014 computation showing a range for the scale offset at epoch 2000.0 of ± 3.3 mm. For the GNSS and the DORIS subnetwork of the DTRF2014 solution, a weighted mean scale of SLR and VLBI is realized. Cross-validations performed between DTRF2014 and ITRF2014 show the high consistency of present ITRS realizations. For GNSS, VLBI and SLR the obtained transformation parameters range within ± 1.7 mm for positions (except for the VLBI and SLR scale and the VLBI z-translation) and ± 0.3 mm/yr for the velocities, the parameters for DORIS are all below 4.2 mm and 0.25 mm/yr (except for the scale rate). The RMS of the transformations, reflecting the agreement of network geometry, range between 0.55 mm for VLBI and 2.25 mm for DORIS. The RMS of station velocities is between 0.08 and 0.62 mm/yr. The DTRF2014 solution provides a high precision and reliability confirmed by various validations performed internally and by external groups. For instance, applications of DTRF2014 for a precise orbit determination (POD) of the altimetry satellite TOPEX and Jason-2 show small radial crossfit residuals between SLR and DORIS and indicate a good performance of DTRF2014. In a previous paper, Glomsda et al. (2020) revisited the impact of distinct parts of non-tidal loading in the analysis of geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). The loading is represented by displacements of the reference positions of the observing VLBI antennas, which are variables of a corresponding Gauss-Markov model for estimating various geodetic target parameters. These displacements were applied at two different levels of the model, the observation and the normal equation level, and quite similar results were obtained for both cases. In this paper, the authors provide a more detailed theoretical discussion of the application of site displacements at the distinct levels, which also comprises the a posteriori application at the solution level. For each case, the respective formulas and implications for the Gauss-Markov model are derived, and equations for assessing the differences between the estimated parameters are established. In this way, the authors aim to create a deeper understanding of the results of the previous paper, which show the capability of the normal equation level to approximate the application of site displacements at the observation level with less effort and prerequisites, and to provide evidence for the claims made in that paper (for VLBI only): (i) the chosen reference frame of the site displacements is basically irrelevant except for the solution level; (ii) the Jacobi matrix does not change substantially; (iii) the loss of temporal resolution of the site displacements is more important than the linear approximation of the functional model at the normal equation level; and (iv) the station coordinate estimates for all three levels strongly depend on the regularizing (datum-) conditions of the model. The theoretical results are substantiated with numerical examples, which consider site displacements generated from non-tidal atmospheric loading by the Earth-System-Modelling group of the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ). In the analysis of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations, many geophysical models are used for correcting the theoretical signal delay. In addition to the conventional models described by Petit and Luzum (eds) (IERS Conventions, 2010), we are applying different parts of non-tidal site loading, namely the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrological ones. To investigate their individual contributions, these parts are considered both separately and combined to a total loading. The application of the corresponding site displacements is performed at two distinct levels of the geodetic parameter estimation process (observation and normal equation level), which turn out to give very similar results in many cases. To validate our findings internally, the site displacements are provided by two different data centres: the Earth-System-Modelling group at the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum in Potsdam (ESMGFZ, see Dill and Dobslaw, J Geophys Res Solid Earth, 2013. 10.1002/jgrb.50353)] and the International Mass Loading Service [IMLS, see Petrov (The international mass loading service, 2015)]. We show that considering non-tidal loading is actually useful for mitigating systematic effects in the VLBI results, like annual signals in the station height time series. If the sum of all non-tidal loading parts is considered, the WRMS of the station heights and baseline lengths is reduced in 80–90% of all cases, and the relative improvement is about - 3.5 % on average. The present contribution investigates the possibility to obtain thermospheric neutral density estimates using satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations of low Earth orbiters (LEOs). This approach is based on the analysis of the satellite atmospheric drag, driven by the fact that the drag force is the largest non-gravitational perturbation acting on LEOs. Due to the uncertainty of current thermospheric models, it is the main error source in the LEO orbit determination process. Moreover, the drag is physically related to the thermospheric density distribution, the interaction of the satellite surface with the surrounding thermosphere and thermospheric winds. For this investigation, a spherical satellite called "Atmospheric Neutral Density Experiment-Pollux" (ANDE-P) developed by the Naval Research Laboratory (USA) is adopted as a case study. The satellite flew at the very low altitude of about 350 km. The most important perturbing acceleration at this altitude, the atmospheric drag, is easier to model for a spherical satellite like ANDE-P than for a satellite of complex geometry. A precise orbit determination of ANDE-P was performed with the DGFI Orbit and Geodetic parameter estimation Software (DOGS) over a period of 49 days (16 August 2009 until 3 October 2009) using SLR observations to this satellite and different thermospheric models. In total, we tested four thermospheric models, namely CIRA86, NRLMSISE00, JB2008 and DTM2013. Correspondingly, scale factors of these reference models are estimated with a 6-h resolution. The results confirm that the estimation of force model parameters from SLR measurements of the ANDE-P satellite is sensitive to differences in the density distributions provided by different models. As a consequence, information on the discrepancies between the various models and the true density can be derived from SLR measurements. Moreover, it is found that SLR observations to LEO satellites at very low altitudes are capable to estimate corrections to (scale factors of) the integrated thermospheric density if all other perturbing accelerations are modelled with sufficient accuracy. We derived time series of estimated scale factors of the thermospheric densities provided by the models and obtained the following mean values during the processed period of time at the ANDE-P altitude: 0.65±0.26 for CIRA86, 0.65±0.25 for NRLMSISE00, 0.79±0.24 for DTM2013, and 0.89±0.27 for JB2008. This suggests that all models overestimate the true thermospheric density along the ANDE-P trajectory during the processed period to a certain extent. The thermospheric densities need to be scaled downwards to fit ANDE-P SLR observations with JB2008 requiring the least amount of scaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we consistently estimate geodetic parameters such as weekly 3-D station coordinates, Earth orientation parameters (EOP) including daily x/y-pole coordinates and the excess length of day ΔLOD, and selected weekly Earth’s gravitational field (Stokes) coefficients up to degree and order 6 from Satellite Laser Ranging measurements to up to 11 geodetic satellites. The SLR constellation consists of LAGEOS-1/2, Etalon-1/2, Stella, Starlette, Ajisai, Larets, LARES, BLITS and WESTPAC, and its observations cover a time span of 38 years ranging from February 16, 1979, to April 30, 2017. If multiple satellites with various altitudes and orbit inclinations are combined, correlations between estimated parameters are significantly reduced. This allows us (i) to investigate the ability of satellite constellations to reduce existing correlations and (ii) to estimate reliable parameters with higher precision compared to the standard 4-satellite constellation (LAGEOS-1/2, Etalon-1/2) which is currently used by the International Laser Ranging Service for the determination of the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) and EOP products. In particular, the Stokes coefficients, EOP and TRF datum parameters (three translations, three rotations, one scale factor), which are highly correlated with satellite-specific orbit parameters, are improved. From our investigations, we found for an 11-satellite solution compared to the above-mentioned 4-satellite solution a decrease in the scatter of the TRF datum parameters of up to 37%, the transformation residuals are decreased by up to 22%, the scatter of the EOP is decreased by up to 22%, and their mean values are decreased by up to 84% w.r.t. the reference solutions. The largest improvement is obtained for the Stokes coefficients which significantly benefit from a combination of multiple satellites (inclinations and orbit altitudes). In total, single coefficients are improved by up to 93% and the overall improvement is up to 74%. Moreover, it could be clearly identified that Ajisai significantly disturbs the TRF solution due to an erroneous center-of-mass correction. We further quantify the impact of specific satellites on the determination of different geodetic parameters and finally evaluate the potential of the existing SLR-tracked spherical satellite constellation to support the goals of GGOS. The Celestial Reference System (CRS) is currently realized only by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) because it is the space geodetic technique that enables observations in that frame. In contrast, the Terrestrial Reference System (TRS) is realized by means of the combination of four space geodetic techniques: Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), VLBI, Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite. The Earth orientation parameters (EOP) are the link between the two types of systems, CRS and TRS. The EOP series of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service were combined of specifically selected series from various analysis centers. Other EOP series were generated by a simultaneous estimation together with the TRF while the CRF was fixed. Those computation approaches entail inherent inconsistencies between TRF, EOP, and CRF, also because the input data sets are different. A combined normal equation (NEQ) system, which consists of all the parameters, i.e., TRF, EOP, and CRF, would overcome such an inconsistency. In this paper, we simultaneously estimate TRF, EOP, and CRF from an inter-technique combined NEQ using the latest GNSS, VLBI, and SLR data (2005-2015). The results show that the selection of local ties is most critical to the TRF. The combination of pole coordinates is beneficial for the CRF, whereas the combination of ΔUT1 results in clear rotations of the estimated CRF. However, the standard deviations of the EOP and the CRF improve by the inter-technique combination which indicates the benefits of a common estimation of all parameters. It became evident that the common determination of TRF, EOP, and CRF systematically influences future ICRF computations at the level of several μas. Satellite laser ranging (SLR) is an important technique that contributes to the determination of terrestrial geodetic reference frames, especially to the realization of the origin and the scale of global networks. One of the major limiting factors of SLR-derived reference frame realizations is the datum accuracy which significantly suffers from the current global SLR station distribution. In this paper, the impact of a potential future development of the SLR network on the estimated datum parameters is investigated. The current status of the SLR network is compared to a simulated potential future network featuring additional stations improving the global network geometry. In addition, possible technical advancements resulting in a higher amount of observations are taken into account as well. As a result, we find that the network improvement causes a decrease in the scatter of the network translation parameters of up to 24%, and up to 20% for the scale, whereas the technological improvement causes a reduction in the scatter of up to 27% for the translations and up to 49% for the scale. We investigate the impact of the reduction of non-tidal loading (NTL) in the computation of secular terrestrial reference frames (TRFs) from Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. There are no conventional models for NTL in the geodetic community yet, but the Global Geophysical Fluid Center prepared a set of corresponding site displacements for the 2020 realizations of the International Terrestrial Reference System. We make use of these data, which comprise the total NTL consisting of non-tidal atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrological loading. The displacement series contain linear trends (i.e., offsets plus drifts), and since these affect the estimated linear station positions and the realized geodetic datum in a secular TRF, we remove the trends before reducing the NTL in our computations. The displacements are applied at two different levels of the parameter estimation process: the observation and the normal equation level. This way, we can analyze whether the latter offers a suitable approximation if the original observations have not been reduced by NTL. We find that the TRF statistics are hardly affected by the NTL. The largest impact is given for the secular motion of antennas with short observation time spans. The application level is basically irrelevant for the linear antenna positions, but it leads to differences in the rates of the jointly estimated Earth orientation parameters (EOPs). Secular TRF solutions and session solutions deviate with respect to the parameterization of the antenna coordinates, and thus also with respect to the correlations between the estimated antenna parameters and the EOPs. Due to this, the consistently estimated EOP series also show differences. However, for both solution types the reduction of the NTL leads to a change of the annual signal in the EOP series. The International DORIS Service (IDS) submitted input data for the most recent realization of the International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS), the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 2014 (ITRF2014). As one of the ITRS Combination Centers, DGFI-TUM is in charge to analyze and assess the quality of the submitted data and to compute a combined global TRF solution (called DTRF2014) using observations of the four geodetic space techniques GNSS, VLBI, SLR and DORIS. The combination methodology used at DGFI-TUM is based on the combination of datum-free normal equations. Together with station coordinates and velocities, terrestrial pole coordinates are estimated in one common adjustment. The paper presents the analysis results of the most recent DORIS submission IDS-d09 and evaluates its quality w.r.t. the DTRF2008 (IDS-only) solution. In the most recent version of the analysis, we introduce in total 55 station discontinuities and reduce 15 stations due to a too short time span or too few observations. Time series of weekly IDS solutions are computed and validated w.r.t. DTRF2008. The transformation parameter time series and the station residuals are discussed in detail. Especially the scale parameter time series shows a significant improvement compared to the DTRF2008 input data. The scatter of the x - and y -translation is significantly reduced to 5.7 mm and 7.1 mm compared to 6.6 mm and 8.1 mm for the DTRF2008 (IDS-only) solution. The z -translation time series still shows a high correlation with solar activity. 10% of all station residuals are significantly affected by spectral peaks at draconitic period harmonics of the altimetry satellites Jason and TOPEX/Poseidon and up to 48% of all station residual time series contain significantly determined frequencies with a 14 day period. The multi-year IDS solution is validated w.r.t. DTRF2008 and the consistently estimated terrestrial pole coordinates are analyzed and compared to IERS 08 C04. The long wavelength part of the Earth's gravity field can be determined, with varying accuracy, from satellite laser ranging (SLR). In this study, we investigate the combination of up to ten geodetic SLR satellites using iterative variance component estimation. SLR observations to different satellites are combined in order to identify the impact of each satellite on the estimated Stokes coefficients. The combination of satellite-specific weekly or monthly arcs allows to reduce parameter correlations of the single-satellite solutions and leads to alternative estimates of the second-degree Stokes coefficients. This alternative time series might be helpful for assessing the uncertainty in the impact of the low-degree Stokes coefficients on geophysical investigations. In order to validate the obtained time series of second-degree Stokes coefficients, a comparison with the SLR RL05 time series of the Center of Space Research (CSR) is done. This investigation shows that all time series are comparable to the CSR time series. The precision of the weekly/monthly $$C_{21}$$ and $$S_{21}$$ coefficients is analyzed by comparing mass-related equatorial excitation functions $$\chi ^{\text {mass}}_{1,2}$$ with geophysical model results and reduced geodetic excitation functions. In case of $$\chi ^{\text {mass}}_{1}$$ , the annual amplitude and phase of the DGFI solution agrees better with three of four geophysical model combinations than other time series. In case of $$\chi ^{\text {mass}}_{2}$$ , all time series agree very well to each other. The impact of $$C_{20}$$ on the ice mass trend estimates for Antarctica are compared based on CSR GRACE RL05 solutions, in which different monthly $$C_{20}$$ time series are used for replacing. We found differences in the long-term Antarctic ice loss of $$12.3$$ Gt/year between the GRACE solutions induced by the different $$C_{20}$$ SLR time series of CSR and DGFI, which is about 13 % of the total ice loss of Antarctica. In the conventions of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (e.g. IERS Conventions 2010), it is recommended that the instantaneous station position, which is fixed to the Earth's crust, is described by a regularized station position and conventional correction models. Current realizations of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame use a station position at a reference epoch and a constant velocity to describe the motion of the regularized station position in time. An advantage of this parameterization is the possibility to provide station coordinates of high accuracy over a long time span. Various publications have shown that residual non-linear station motions can reach a magnitude of a few centimeters due to not considered loading effects. Consistently estimated parameters like the Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP) may be affected if these non-linear station motions are neglected. In this paper, we investigate a new approach, which is based on a frequent (e.g. weekly) estimation of station positions and EOP from a combination of epoch normal equations of the space geodetic techniques Global Positioning System (GPS), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). The resulting time series of epoch reference frames are studied in detail and are compared with the conventional secular approach. It is shown that both approaches have specific advantages and disadvantages, which are discussed in the paper. A major advantage of the frequently estimated epoch reference frames is that the non-linear station motions are implicitly taken into account, which is a major limiting factor for the accuracy of the secular frames. Various test computations and comparisons between the epoch and secular approach are performed. The authors found that the consistently estimated EOP are systematically affected by the two different combination approaches. The differences between the epoch and secular frames reach magnitudes of $$23.6~\upmu \hbox {as}$$ (0.73 mm) and $$39.8~\upmu \hbox {as}$$ (1.23 mm) for the x-pole and y-pole, respectively, in case of the combined solutions. The accurate knowledge of the Earth’s orientation and rotation in space is essential for a broad variety of scientific and societal applications. Among others, these include global positioning, near-Earth and deep-space navigation, the realisation of precise reference and time systems as well as studies of geodynamics and global change phenomena. In this paper, we present a refined strategy for processing and combining Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) observations at the normal equation level and formulate recommendations for a consistent processing of the space-geodetic input data. Based on the developed strategy, we determine final and rapid Earth rotation parameter (ERP) solutions with low latency that also serve as the basis for a subsequent prediction of ERPs involving effective angular momentum data. Realising final ERPs on an accuracy level comparable to the final ERP benchmark solutions IERS 14C04 and JPL COMB2018, our strategy allows to enhance the consistency between final, rapid and predicted ERPs in terms of RMS differences by up to 50% compared to existing solutions. The findings of the study thus support the ambitious goals of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) in providing highly accurate and consistent time series of geodetic parameters for science and applications. For low Earth orbiting satellites, non-gravitational forces cause one of the largest perturbing accelerations. During a precise orbit determination (POD), the accurate modeling of the satellite-body attitude and solar panel orientation is important since the satellite's effective cross-sectional area is directly related to the perturbing acceleration. Moreover, the position of tracking instruments that are mounted on the satellite body are affected by the satellite attitude. For satellites like Jason-1/-2/-3, attitude information is available in two forms—as a so-called nominal yaw steering model and as observation-based (measured by star tracking cameras) quaternions of the spacecraft body orientation and rotation angles of the solar arrays. In this study, we have developed a preprocessing procedure for publicly available satellite attitude information. We computed orbits based on Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) observations to the Jason satellites at an overall time interval of approximately 25 years, using each of the two satellite attitude representations. Based on the analysis of the orbits, we investigate the influence of using preprocessed observation-based attitude in contrast to using a nominal yaw steering model for the POD. About 75% of all orbital arcs calculated with the observation-based satellite attitude data result in a smaller root mean square (RMS) of residuals. More precisely, the resulting orbits show an improvement in the overall mission RMS of SLR observation residuals of 5.93% (Jason-1), 8.27% (Jason-2) and 4.51% (Jason-3) compared to the nominal attitude realization. Besides the satellite orbits, also the estimated station coordinates benefit from the refined attitude handling, that is, the station repeatability is clearly improved at the draconitic period. Moreover, altimetry analysis indicates a clear improvement of the single-satellite crossover differences (6%, 15%, and 16% reduction of the mean of absolute differences and 1.2%, 2.7%, and 1.3% of their standard deviations for Jason-1/-2/-3, respectively). Continuous monitoring of the perpetual changing Earth is one of the key topics of present Earth System research. In the past, the satellite mission Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) was measuring the time-variable gravity field of the Earth with outstanding performance in accuracy and reliability. On October 27 in 2017, GRACE de-orbited and this very successful geodetic satellite mission ended. On May 22 in 2018, the successor mission GRACE-FO (Follow On) was launched and scientific data will be provided soon to the users. Between the two satellite missions, there is a gap of more than six months. Beside the GRACE and other satellite missions, several analysis centers (ACs) worldwide process laser ranging (SLR) data to spherical satellites orbiting the Earth which allow a very accurate estimation of the low-degree spherical harmonics of the Earth's gravity field. Up to now, the available time series are stand-alone solutions which co-exist to each other.In this investigation, we will combine the SLR-derived time series of low-degree spherical harmonics from different SLR analysis centers and, moreover, combine them with the GRACE data in order to extend the continuous time series of the monthly gravity field in the GRACE/GRACE-FO gap and into the past (before the launch of GRACE in 2002). We will compare the combined SLR time series to GRACE monthly solutions and evaluate the impact of different solution setups like the SLR-orbit length, a priori models, etc. on the results. Rapid provision of Earth orientation parameters (EOPs, here polar motion and dUT1) is indispensable in many geodetic applications and also for spacecraft navigation. There are, however, discrepancies between the rapid EOPs and the final EOPs that have a higher latency but the highest accuracy. To reduce these discrepancies, we focus on a data‐driven approach, present a novel method named ResLearner, and use it in the context of deep ensemble learning. Furthermore, we introduce a geophysically constrained approach for ResLearner. We show that the most important geophysical information to improve the rapid EOPs is the effective angular momentum functions of atmosphere, ocean, land hydrology, and sea level. In addition, semidiurnal, diurnal, and long‐period tides coupled with prograde and retrograde tidal excitations are important features. The influence of some climatic indices on the prediction accuracy of dUT1 is discussed, and El Niño Southern Oscillation is found to be influential. We developed an operational framework, providing the improved EOPs on a daily basis with a prediction window of 63 days to fully cover the latency of final EOPs. We show that under the operational conditions and using the rapid EOPs of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), we achieve improvements as high as 60%, thus significantly reducing the differences between rapid and final EOPs. Furthermore, we discuss how the new final series IERS 20 C04 is preferred over 14 C04. Finally, we compare against EOP hindcast experiments of the European Space Agency, on which ResLearner presents comparable improvements. Plain Language Summary: The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) provides rapid Earth orientation parameters (EOPs) using different space‐geodetic techniques to bridge the latency of the final, most accurate EOPs solution. However, these rapid EOPs are not in full agreement with the final EOPs. In order to reduce the differences between the rapid and final EOPs, we focus on the application of machine learning and present a novel method named ResLearner, which is based on geodetic data and geophysical constraints. We present the method in the context of deep ensemble learning, focusing on a prediction window of 63 days. We also attempt to link informative geophysical effects to these discrepancies. We show that they are linked to a mixture of atmospheric, oceanic, hydrological, and sea level effective angular momentum functions, dominance of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems‐derived polar motion, and various short‐ and long‐term tidal excitations. El Niño Southern Oscillation is also relevant for dUT1 prediction. The methodology can provide significant improvements of up to 60% in operational settings with respect to rapid EOPs provided by IERS. Additional validation is done by using the data of Jet Propulsion Laboratory final EOP series and also EOP series provided by the European Space Agency. Precise orbits of altimetry satellites are a prerequisite for the investigation of global, regional, and coastal sea levels together with their changes, since accurate satellite positions in the radial direction are required for the reliable determination of the water surface height (distance between the altimeter position in space and the water surface). Significant progress in the improvement of altimetry satellite orbit quality has been achieved in the last 30 years increasing the orbit accuracy in the radial direction from decimeter to centimeter and even sub-centimeter level. That was possible due to the improvements in the modeling of Earth's time variable gravity field, ocean tides, terrestrial and celestial reference frames, but also due to the accomplishments reached in the observation methods used for altimetry satellites, namely Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS), and Global Positioning System (GPS—used for some satellites). In this paper, we review the main improvements in the models used for the determination of orbits of altimetry satellites, namely, in so called Geophysical Data Records (GDR) orbit standards from GDR-C to Precise Orbit Ephemeris-F (POE-F), illustrate the impact of the improvements in precise orbit determination of these satellites on the orbit accuracy in the radial direction. Additionally we investigate orbit differences in the radial direction, single-satellite crossover differences, radial, and geographically correlated orbit errors of contemporary orbits of various altimetry satellites namely Cryosat-2, Envisat, ERS-1, ERS-2, Jason-1, Jason-2, Jason-3, SARAL, Sentinel-3A, Sentinel-3B, and TOPEX/Poseidon derived by different institutions. Improving and homogenizing time and space reference systems on Earth and, more specifically, realizing the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) with an accuracy of 1 mm and a long-term stability of 0.1 mm/year are relevant for many scientific and societal endeavors. The knowledge of the TRF is fundamental for Earth and navigation sciences. For instance, quantifying sea level change strongly depends on an accurate determination of the geocenter motion but also of the positions of continental and island reference stations, such as those located at tide gauges, as well as the ground stations of tracking networks. Also, numerous applications in geophysics require absolute millimeter precision from the reference frame, as for example monitoring tectonic motion or crustal deformation, contributing to a better understanding of natural hazards. The TRF accuracy to be achieved represents the consensus of various authorities, including the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), which has enunciated geodesy requirements for Earth sciences. Moreover, the United Nations Resolution 69/266 states that the full societal benefits in developing satellite missions for positioning and Remote Sensing of the Earth are realized only if they are referenced to a common global geodetic reference frame at the national, regional and global levels. Today we are still far from these ambitious accuracy and stability goals for the realization of the TRF. However, a combination and co-location of all four space geodetic techniques on one satellite platform can significantly contribute to achieving these goals. This is the purpose of the GENESIS mission, a component of the FutureNAV program of the European Space Agency. The GENESIS platform will be a dynamic space geodetic observatory carrying all the geodetic instruments referenced to one another through carefully calibrated space ties. The co-location of the techniques in space will solve the inconsistencies and biases between the different geodetic techniques in order to reach the TRF accuracy and stability goals endorsed by the various international authorities and the scientific community. The purpose of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art and explain the benefits of the GENESIS mission in Earth sciences, navigation sciences and metrology. This paper has been written and supported by a large community of scientists from many countries and working in several different fields of science, ranging from geophysics and geodesy to time and frequency metrology, navigation and positioning. As it is explained throughout this paper, there is a very high scientific consensus that the GENESIS mission would deliver exemplary science and societal benefits across a multidisciplinary range of Navigation and Earth sciences applications, constituting a global infrastructure that is internationally agreed to be strongly desirable. A new realization of the International Terrestrial System was computed at the ITRS Combination Centre at DGFI as a contribution to ITRF2008. The solution is labelled DTRF2008. In the same way as in the DGFI computation for ITRF2005 it is based on either normal equation systems or estimated parameters derived from VLBI, SLR, GPS and DORIS observations by weekly or session-wise processing. The parameter space of the ITRS realization comprises station positions and velocities and daily resolved Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP), whereby for the first time also nutation parameters are included. The advantage of starting from time series of input data is that the temporal behaviour of geophysical parameters can be investigated to decide whether the parameters can contribute to the datum realization of the ITRF. In the same way, a standardized analysis of station position time series can be performed to detect and remove discontinuities. The advantage of including EOP in the ITRS realization is twofold: (1) the combination of the coordinates of the terrestrial pole-estimated from all contributing techniques-links the technique networks in two components of the orientation, leading to an improvement of consistency of the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) and (2) in their capacity as parameters common to all techniques, the terrestrial pole coordinates enhance the selection of local ties as they provide a measure for the consistency of the combined frame. The computation strategy of DGFI is based on the combination of normal equation systems while at the ITRS Combination Centre at IGN solutions are combined. The two independent ITRS realizations provide the possibility to assess the accuracy of ITRF by comparison of the two frames. The accuracy evaluation was done separately for the datum parameters (origin, orientation and scale) and the network geometry. The accuracy of the datum parameters, assessed from the comparison of DTRF2008 and ITRF2008, is between 2-5 mm and 0.1-0.8 mm/year depending on the technique. The network geometry (station positions and velocities) agrees within 3.2 mm and 1.0 mm/year. A comparison of DTRF2008 and ITRF2005 provides similar results for the datum parameters, but there are larger differences for the network geometry. The internal accuracy of DTRF2008-that means the level of conservation of datum information and network geometry within the combination-was derived from comparisons with the technique-only multi-year solutions. From this an internal accuracy of 0.32 mm for the VLBI up to 3.3 mm for the DORIS part of the network is found. The internal accuracy of velocities ranges from 0.05 mm/year for VLBI to 0.83 mm/year for DORIS. The internal consistency of DTRF2008 for orientation can be derived from the analysis of the terrestrial pole coordinates. It is estimated at 1.5-2.5 mm for the GPS, VLBI and SLR parts of the network. The consistency of these three and the DORIS network part is within 6.5 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs) are derived from various space geodetic observation techniques such as GNSS, SLR, DORIS and VLBI. The combination of the different techniques leads to a complete EOP series which is officially released by the IERS after a processing time of approximately 30 days in the case of the final IERS series (C04). In order to reduce the latency for near-real time applications, the so-called Intensive and Rapid products are utilized for VLBI and GNSS, respectively. In this context, the data processing can be accelerated to a delay of 1-2 days. However, neither VLBI nor GNSS solely deliver a complete set of EOPs, and the combination is not done yet in a fully rigorous way, i.e., by taking into account all correlations, especially between polar motion and Universal Time (dUT). Therefore, the present study focuses on a combination of VLBI Intensive and GNSS Rapid solutions on the basis of Normal Equations (NEQ) containing all common parameters, i.e., station coordinates, polar motion and dUT. Regarding different constraint scenarios a daily stacking of the specific NEQs is carried out. The combined solution leads then to an improvement of the numerical NEQ stability and a fully consistent estimation of polar motion and dUT. This contribution focuses on the combination of both VLBI Intensive and GNSS Rapid NEQs for a consistent estimation of a full set of EOPs. In this context, investigations of the obtained accuracies have been carried out. The combined estimates of polar motion, dUT and their associated rates are therefore discussed and compared with respect to the official reference series and the specific single-technique solutions. Conventional long-term Terrestrial Reference Frames (TRF) based on station positions and velocities suffer from the fact that they are outdated from the moment of their realisation (publication). Especially in regions with high seismic activities, their usability is often limited to a very short period of time. Moreover, the geocentricity of the TRF, i.e. its origin defined to coincide with the Earth's centre-of-mass as well as its scale defined to be equal to the common SLR and VLBI scale, is not ensured over time. Regional reference frames like SIRGAS (Sistema de Referencia Geocéntrico para las Américas), on the other hand, are usually realised solely by densifying the global conventional TRF via fiducial points; thus, also the geocentricity of the densified TRF is only given at a certain point of time. Within the DFG-funded project DIrect GEocentric Realisation of the American reference frame by combination of geodetic observation TechnIques (DIGERATI), investigations with respect to the realisation of an Epoch Reference Frame (ERF) are being performed. The ERF shall be realised directly and geocentrically, i.e. from a global station network, being densified for the South American subcontinent. The investigations are focussed on the optimum combination strategies of the geodetic techniques as well as on the optimum "sampling" of realisations (e.g. monthly) in order to obtain a sufficient amount of observations in each ERF realisation. In this study, we present an empirical model, named CH-Therm-2018, of the thermospheric mass density derived from 9-year (from August 2000 to July 2009) accelerometer measurements from the CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellite at altitudes from 460 to 310 km. The CHAMP dataset is divided into two 5-year periods with 1-year overlap (from August 2000 to July 2005 and from August 2004 to July 2009) to represent the high-to-moderate and moderate-to-low solar activity conditions, respectively. The CH-Therm-2018 model describes the thermospheric density as a function of seven key parameters, namely the height, solar flux index, season (day of year), magnetic local time, geographic latitude and longitude, as well as magnetic activity represented by the solar wind merging electric field. Predictions of the CH-Therm-2018 model agree well with CHAMP observations (within 20 %) and show different features of thermospheric mass density during the two solar activity levels, e.g., the March-September equinox asymmetry and the longitudinal wave pattern. From the analysis of satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations of the ANDE-Pollux satellite during August-September 2009, we estimate 6 h scaling factors of the thermospheric mass density provided by our model and obtain the median value equal to 1:267±0:60. Subsequently, we scale up our CHTherm-2018 mass density predictions by a scale factor of 1.267. We further compare the CH-Therm-2018 predictions with the Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer Incoherent Scatter Radar Extended (NRLMSISE-00) model. The result shows that our model better predicts the density evolution during the last solar minimum (2008-2009) than the NRLMSISE-00 model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The location of the Earth's principal axes of inertia is a foundation for all the theories and solutions of its rotation, and thus has a broad effect on many fields, including astronomy, geodesy, and satellite-based positioning and navigation systems. That location is determined by the second-degree Stokes coefficients of the geopotential. Accurate solutions for those coefficients were limited to the stationary case for many years, but the situation improved with the accomplishment of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), and nowadays several solutions for the time-varying geopotential have been derived based on gravity and satellite laser ranging data, with time resolutions reaching one month or one week. Although those solutions are already accurate enough to compute the evolution of the Earth's axes of inertia along more than a decade, such an analysis has never been performed. In this paper, we present the first analysis of this problem, taking advantage of previous analytical derivations to simplify the computations and the estimation of the uncertainty of solutions. The results are rather striking, since the axes of inertia do not move around some mean position fixed to a given terrestrial reference frame in this period, but drift away from their initial location in a slow but clear and not negligible manner. SLR is one of the four geodetic techniques contributing to the realization of terrestrial reference frames (TRFs). It is the unique technique enabling a highly accurate determination of the origin, and it contributes to the determination of the TRF scale. The current SLR tracking network suffers from an insufficient network geometry due to a lack of stations especially in the southern hemisphere. Previous simulation studies have shown that the extension of the global SLR tracking network is indispensable for reaching the target accuracy of future TRFs and the ambitious GGOS goals. The simulation studies have put focus on a determination of the locations where additional SLR stations are most valuable for an improved estimation of the geodetic parameters.Within the present study, we perform a simulation of a set of stations distributed equally over the globe and comparing different solutions, always adding one of these simulated stations to the real SLR station network. This approach has been chosen in order to be able to investigate the deficiencies of the existing SLR network and to judge in which regions on the globe an additional SLR station could be most valuable for the improvement of certain geodetic parameters of SLR-derived reference frames.
