In contrast to previous research, we were interested not only in specific pain coping but also in more general stress coping strategies and their potential influence on pain outcomes. Analyses were performed using correlation and regression analyses. “Praying and hoping” turned out to be an independent predictor of higher pain intensity and higher anxiety levels, whereas both “coping self-instructions” and “diverting attention” were associated with higher well-being, less feelings of helplessness, and less depression and anxiety. We further found a link between “focusing on and venting emotions” and “worse pain adjustment”. No significant relationship between dyadic coping and social support with any of our pain outcomes could be observed. Overall, our results indicate that individual coping strategies outweigh the effects of social support and dyadic coping on pain-related outcomes and pain adjustment. Thus, it depends on the ways of dealing with stress within a couple (dyadic coping). In this study, the relationship between dyadic coping and well-being was investigated among couples in which one partner suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Methods: A total of 43 couples participated. They were mailed questionnaires on anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), quality of life (World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-BREF), and dyadic coping (Dyadic Coping Inventory).Results: Low scores of positive and high scores of negative dyadic coping were associated with poorer quality of life and higher psychological distress among couples. Delegated coping (assistance with daily tasks) was higher among partners. When estimated by patients, high delegated partner coping (frequent provision of support by partners) and low delegated personal coping (low provision of support by patients) were associated with poorer quality of life for both patient and partner. COPD patients suffering from depression were supported more often and attributed deficits in dyadic coping primarily to themselves, whereas partners with higher scores of depression provided higher estimates of both their own negative coping and the negative coping of their partner.Conclusion: The higher the patient perceived the imbalance in delegated dyadic coping, the lower the couple's quality of life. More negative and less positive dyadic coping were associated with lower quality of life and higher psychological distress. Psychotherapeutic interventions to improve dyadic coping may lead to better quality of life and less psychological distress among COPD patients and their partners.Keywords: COPD, dyadic coping, partner study, quality of life, anxiety, depression

Abstract

Following the global outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, individuals report psychological distress associated with the “new normal”—social distancing, financial hardships, and increased responsibilities while working from home. Given the interpersonal nature of stress and coping responses between romantic partners, based on the systemic transactional model this study posits that perceived partner dyadic coping may be an important moderator between experiences of COVID-19 psychological distress and relationship quality. To examine these associations, self-report data from 14,020 people across 27 countries were collected during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic (March–July, 2020). It was hypothesized that higher symptoms of psychological distress would be reported post-COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19 restrictions (Hypothesis 1), reports of post-COVID-19 psychological distress would be negatively associated with relationship quality (Hypothesis 2), and perceived partner DC would moderate these associations (Hypothesis 3). Abstract

The study of romantic partners’ experiences of stress and coping has exploded with nearly 11,000 empirical studies on this topic within the past two decades alone. Despite its prevalence, researchers, clinicians, and policy makers alike are questioning how inclusive is our current knowledge base on partners’ stress and coping? The purpose of this review is to examine literature on this topic from the past two decades to offer perspectives on whose vantage point has the research been conducted and what types of questions have been valued and for whom? To answer these questions, a scoping review was conducted of articles published in the last two decades (2002–2021) that focused on associations of partners’ stress, support, and/or coping with relationship quality and presented research questions on two or more demographic identities. Fifty-six empirical articles met the inclusion criteria. Results were not surprising given the lack of diversity in psychological science; most manuscripts used theories and models that were developed by Western scholars and the research questions focused on general processes independent of peoples’ identities or focused on a singular aspect of identity. Limitations and future directions of this review are presented, specifically as they pertain to the need for a more critical analysis of the types of stressors people may experience and how those with diverse identities, particularly multiple minoritized identities, may experience and cope with such stressors in the context of their relationship.

Abstract

Across the world, millions of couples get married each year. One of the strongest predictors of whether partners will remain in their relationship is their reported satisfaction. Marital satisfaction is commonly found to be a key predictor of both individual and relational well-being. Despite its importance in predicting relationship longevity, there are relatively few empirical research studies examining predictors of marital satisfaction outside of a Western context. To address this gap in the literature and complete the existing knowledge about global predictors of marital satisfaction, we used an open-access database of self-reported assessments of self-reported marital satisfaction with data from 7178 participants representing 33 different countries. The results showed that sex, age, religiosity, economic status, education, and cultural values were related, to various extents, to marital satisfaction across cultures. However, marriage duration, number of children, and gross domestic product (GDP) were not found to be predictors of marital satisfaction for countries represented in this sample. While 96% of the variance of marital satisfaction was attributed to individual factors, only 4% was associated with countries. Together, the results show that individual differences have a larger influence on marital satisfaction compared to the country of origin. Findings are discussed in terms of the advantages of conducting studies on large cross-cultural samples.

Abstract

Hausaufgaben spielen in der Paartherapie unabhängig von deren theoretischer Ausrichtung eine bedeutende Rolle. Dabei variieren je nach therapeutischem Ansatz die Form der Inhalt die Häufigkeit und der Zeitpunkt im therapeutischen Prozess wann Hausaufgaben aufgegeben werden. Bezüglich Funktion der Hausaufgabe gibt es deutlich weniger Differenzen und die meisten Richtungen der Paartherapie anerkennen den Nutzen von Hausaufgaben zur Gewinnung neuer Einsichten oder zur Vertiefung und Festigung von neuen Verhaltensweisen Kognitionen oder Emotionen. Gerade in der Verhaltenstherapie mit Paaren spielen Hausaufgaben eine zentrale Rolle. Sie sind häufig inhaltlich und formal strukturiert und werden im Gegensatz zu anderen Ansätzen als verpflichtender Beitrag des Paares zum Gelingen der Therapie angesehen. Abstract

Forming and maintaining a satisfying romantic relationship are important life goals for Italians (Monzani, Greco, & Steca, 2011). Accomplishing such goals, however, is subject to specific challenges in the Italian context. While the number of marriages in Italy showed a significant decrease over the past years, divorce rates have been gradually increasing (Istituto Nazionale di Statistica, 2014). Indeed, these signs of a general weakening of the marital bond in Italy reflect a cultural shift in values as well as the many stressful circumstances that partners have to face in their everyday life. Partners’ ability to manage stressful circumstances together has proved to have relevant repercussions on partners’ well-being (e.g., Bertoni et al., 2007; Donato & Parise, 2012). Nonetheless, studies on stressors, and how couples cope, are scarce in Italy and have only recently received attention by the Italian scientific community (Donato, 2014). The goals of the present chapter are as follows: First, we highlight the specific characteristics of the Italian culture and background that render some features of couples’ coping particularly relevant in this context. Second, we present the available evidence on Italian partners’ dyadic coping. The section includes Italian studies regarding a) the assessment of dyadic coping in the Italian context; b) the impact of different forms of dyadic coping responses to partners’ personal and relational well-being, and the buffering role of dyadic coping in the link between partners’ stress and well-being; c) the congruence of partners’ perceptions in the process of dyadic coping; as well as d) the intergenerational transmission of dyadic coping competences. Finally, the chapter will conclude with the implications for programs aiming at improving couples’ stress management and for dyadic coping research.

Abstract

Objective: Theories about how couples help each other to cope with stress, such as the systemic transactional model of dyadic coping, suggest that the cultural context in which couples live influences how their coping behavior affects their relationship satisfaction. In contrast to the theoretical assumptions, a recent meta-analysis provides evidence that neither culture, nor gender, influences the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction, at least based on their samples of couples living in North America and West Europe. Thus, it is an open questions whether the theoretical assumptions of cultural influences are false or whether cultural influences on couple behavior just occur in cultures outside of the Western world. Method: In order to examine the cultural influence, using a sample of married individuals (N = 7973) from 35 nations, we used multilevel modeling to test whether the positive association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies across nations and whether gender might moderate the association. Results: Results reveal that the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies between nations. In addition, results show that in some nations the association is higher for men and in other nations it is higher for women. Conclusions: Cultural and gender differences across the globe influence how couples' coping behavior affects relationship outcomes. This crucial finding indicates that couple relationship education programs and interventions need to be culturally adapted, as skill trainings such as dyadic coping lead to differential effects on relationship satisfaction based on the culture in which couples live.

Abstract

Abstract: Dyadic coping has repeatedly been associated with positive outcomes in intimate relationships. However, less is known about the prospective predictors of dyadic coping. This study investigates clarity of other's feelings (CoF) as a potential predictor of supportive dyadic coping in a longitudinal study. In a sample of 368 couples, self‐reported CoF and supportive dyadic coping perceived by the partner were assessed annually over 3 years. Results revealed that interpersonal differences in men and women's CoF are positively associated with interpersonal differences in supportive dyadic coping. Moreover, interpersonal differences in men's CoF predicted long‐term intrapersonal changes in supportive dyadic coping of both partners. Abstract

Ways to enhance research into coping have been suggested by Lazarus (2000). The issues of adaptiveness and conceptual structure of coping (Cramer, 1998; Skinner et al., 2003) are particularly relevant; thus, this study addresses them in a clinical research setting. A total of 30 inpatients presenting with Bipolar Affective Disorder (BD) have been interviewed twice, as well as the participants of a matched control group (N = 30). Self-report (CISS) and observerrater methods (CAP) of coping have been applied: low correlations were found between the instruments. Coping specificities in BD have been identified: opposition and support-seeking are most frequently practiced by BD patients, in comparison with controls. No significant link has been found between coping processes, symptom level and the therapeutic alliance. This study lends support for a quantitative definition of coping adaptiveness which is discussed, along with clinical implications on psychological treatments of BD (German J Psychiatry 2009; 12: 19-27).

Abstract

Five hundred eighty divorced individuals from Germany, Italy, and Switzerland provided retrospective reports on the perceived similarities and differences between themselves and their former partner and on their own and their partner's attractiveness. Initiators and noninitiators were compared with regard to these different variables. Results demonstrated that most divorcees perceived themselves to be quite similar to their former partner. Initiating women were more likely than noninitiating women to perceive themselves as different from their former partner in personality, norms, and needs and to evaluate their former partner to be less attractive. Abstract

Most prior studies of skill-based preventive interventions for couples compare changes in problem-solving behaviors made by treated couples with those made by control couples. Unexpected findings in these studies highlight the need to examine within-group variability in behavior change among treated couples, alternative behavioral domains, including dyadic support and coping, and partners' intended and actual use of strategies taught in the interventions. A 24-month longitudinal study of 109 couples participating in an 18-hour intervention designed to enhance communication and dyadic coping revealed that marital outcomes are enhanced to the extent that (a) wives increase their positive problem-solving behavior and husbands decrease their negative problem-solving behavior over the course of the intervention, and (b) wives and husbands increase their positive dyadic coping behaviors, and husbands decrease their negative dyadic coping behaviors. Moreover, greater postintervention use of strategies taught in the intervention program produced better outcomes, and wives' improvements in positive and negative dyadic coping strengthened associations between strategy use and relationship satisfaction. 35. Auffrischungskurse bei der Prävention von Beziehungsstörungen: Wer nimmt teil, wer profitiert?

Abstract

Hintergrund: Die Wirksamkeit von verhaltenstherapeutischen Paarinterventionen ist gut dokumentiert, die erlernten Kompetenzen und die verbesserte Partnerschaftszufriedenheit sind jedoch oftmals nicht von Dauer. Durch Auffrischungssitzungen konnten erste positive Ergebnisse bei der Stabilität der Effekte gemessen werden. Allerdings ist noch unklar, ob Paare, bei denen solche Auffrischungskurse aufgrund eines hohen Trennungsrisikos indiziert wären, diese auch wirklich besuchen. Probanden und Methode: In der vorliegenden 2-Jahres-Längsschnittstudie besuchten Paare (N = 101) einen Basiskurs zur Prävention von Beziehungsstörungen (Couples Coping Enhancement Training, CCET) und konnten anschließend zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten freiwillig an Auffrischungskursen teilnehmen. Behandlungseffekte wurden mithilfe mulitvariater Varianzanalysen und Diskriminanzanalysen ausgewertet. Ergebnisse: Paare mit und ohne Auffrischungskurse unterschieden sich bezüglich scheidungsrelevanter Variablen zu Beginn der Studie nicht wesentlich voneinander. Die Vorhersage, ob die Paare einen Auffrischungskurs besuchen würden oder nicht, erwies sich als schwierig. Paare mit Auffrischungskurs konnten allerdings die Verbesserungen nach dem Basiskurs länger aufrechterhalten. Innerhalb der Gruppe mit Auffrischungskursen zeigte sich, dass die Paare, die erst den zweiten Termin für einen Auffrischungskurs in Anspruch nahmen, höhere Werte in der Partnerschaftszufriedenheit und im dyadischen Coping aufwiesen, als die Paare, die den erstmöglichen Termin beanspruchten. Schlussfolgerung: Da viele Paare die Auffrischungssitzungen nicht besuchten, obschon dies indiziert gewesen wäre, müssen die Bemühungen verstärkt werden, diese Paare für die Teilnahme an Auffrischungssitzungen zu gewinnen. 40. Deletrious effects of stress on time spent with one's parnter and relationship satisfaction

Abstract

Data from 90 German committed heterosexual couples who had a least one child were used to examine the associations between chronic minor external stress quantity and quality of time spent together as a couple and partners' relationship satisfaction. Using an extended version of the Actor Partner Interdependence Model the authors found significant negative indirect effects from mothers' chronic minor external stress via quality but not quantity of shared time to both parents' reported relationship satisfaction. Mothers' chronic minor external stress was associated with fewer reported quality time activities which were also associated with lower reports of relationship satisfaction for both mothers and fathers. The authors did not find indirect effects for fathers' chronic minor external stress. Overall the frequency of quality time activities may be more important for mothers as it explained 25 of variance in their relationship satisfaction compared with 15 in fathers' relationship satisfaction. Implications for relationship researchers and clinicians are discussed.

50. Positive Outcomes of Long-Term Relationship Satisfaction Trajectories in Stable Romantic Couples: A 10-Year Longitudinal Study.

Abstract

Growing evidence challenges the longstanding assumption of a universal decline in relationship satisfaction for all couples by demonstrating variability in the change. However, knowledge about how differential long-term trajectories of relationship satisfaction are associated with positive individual functioning is lacking. Using dyadic latent class growth analysis, we studied long-term trajectories of relationship satisfaction of N  = 300 mixed-gender couples over 10 years and examined positive outcomes in latent subgroups. At the final assessment, partners reported on positive outcomes, specifically affect, mental health, and life satisfaction. Depending on their subgroup membership, couples systematically differed: Couples in the subgroup with high initial and relatively stable relationship satisfaction reported the most favorable outcomes-more positive affect, better mental health, and higher life satisfaction-as compared to subgroups with declining and/or lower relationship satisfaction.
