Considers, after surveying advisers and business managers at college/university student dailies, the extent to which these campus newspapers are instructionally independent or dependent of a university, both individually and collectively. Finds 12 dailies to be strongly independent of university control, one firmly curriculum-based, and 89 a mix of both. (PA)

A survey of advisers and business managers to 101 US student dailies reveals that although many campus newspapers claim instructional independence, they are susceptible to censorship due to their dependence on university funding. The Louis E. Ingelhart criteria were applied to the survey in order to distinguish between the curriculum-based laboratory papers and the instructionally independent papers. Future research should take into consideration Ingelhart's 19 other criteria while surveying the financial and instructional independence of student newspapers.

A study reveals significant differences between the media's and the public's perception of free expression as defined by the First Amendment. The media is more liberal in its support of expressive rights than the public and more likely than the public to defend media rights. However, the diverse goals and agendas of media entities invalidate their monolithic approach to social concerns. While the journalists are more supportive of expressive rights granted by the First Amendment, the boundary-spinning activities of marketing communicators brings them closer to the public position on media rights.

Students' comments on the teaching techniques employed by some teachers often help in improving teaching techniques although certain remarks are insulting. Sometimes, even the best teachers face criticism. Educators strive to discern sound judgments from the biased to improve teaching standards.

An analysis of student newspaper advisers in the US reveals that more than half the advisers want to quit their jobs as they experience too much administrative interference over policies and get very little respect and remuneration. Elevation of an adviser's status with respect to tenure, status and pay would help to increase adviser longevity. Advisers need to be treated properly if journalism students are to receive proper training on student newspapers.

The refereed scholarship and levels of inclusion by gender within and among Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's (AEJMC) divisions, interest groups, and commissions are presented. The separate productivity totals for divisions and non-divisions are provided while documenting trends in co-sponsorship among the groups at the convention of AEJMC from 1994 to 2003.

6,535 articles in ten journalism and mass communication journals from 1986 to 2000 are analyzed to determine definitively the proportion of journal research produced by women in accordance with the 1989 AEJMC resolution. Women produced an average of 28.6% of the journal scholarship during the fifteen-year period where faculty employment levels for women rose from 24% to 32.6%.
