Abstract

Solid-state electrolytes mark a significant leap forward in the field of electrochemical energy storage, offering improved safety and efficiency compared to conventional liquid electrolytes. Among these, antiperovskite electrolytes, particularly those based on Li and Na, have emerged as promising candidates due to their superior ionic conductivity and straightforward synthesis processes. This study focuses on the amorphous phase of antiperovskite Na$_3$OCl, assessing its structural properties through a combination of first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) and machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) simulations. Our comprehensive analysis spans models ranging from 135 to 3645 atoms, allowing for a detailed examination of X-ray and neutron structure factors, total and partial pair correlation functions, coordination numbers, and structural unit distributions. We demonstrate the minimal, albeit partially present, size effects on these structural features and validate the accuracy of the MLIP model in reproducing the intricate details of the amorphous Na$_3$OCl structure described at the FPMD level., Comment: 6 Figures and 3 Tables

Abstract

This study evaluated the relationship between negative symptoms, daily time use (productive/non-productive activities, PA/NPA), and negative emotions in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSDs): 618 individuals with SSDs (311 residential care patients [RCPs], 307 outpatients) were surveyed about socio-demographic, clinical (BPRS, BNSS) and daily time use (paper-and-pencil Time Use Survey completed twice/week) characteristics. Among them 57 RCPs and 46 outpatients, matched to 112 healthy controls, also underwent ecological monitoring of emotions (8 times/day for a week) through Experience Sampling Method (ESM). RCPs spent significantly less time in PA than outpatients. Patients with more negative symptomatology spent more time in NPA and less in PA compared to patients with milder symptoms. Higher time spent in NPA was associated with negative emotions (p < 0.001 during workdays) even when correcting for BNSS total and antipsychotic polypharmacy (p = 0.002 for workdays, p = 0.006 for Sundays). Future studies are needed to explore in more detail the relationship between negative emotions, negative symptoms, time use, and functioning in individuals with SSDs, providing opportunities for more informed and personalised clinical treatment planning and research into interactions between different motivational, saliency and behavioural aspects in individuals with SSDs.

Abstract

Aims. Care needs represent an essential paradigm in planning residential facility (RF) interventions. However, possible disagreements between users and staff are critical issues in service delivery. The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) tracks experiences in the real world and real time. This study aimed to evaluate the care needs of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) in RFs and its association with daily activities and mood monitored using the ESM.Methods. As part of the DIAPASON project, 313 residents with SSD were recruited from 99 Italian RFs. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. Care needs, the severity of symptomatology and negative symptoms were assessed. Fifty-six residents were also assessed for 7 consecutive days using the mobile ESM. Descriptive, agreement, predictor and moderator analyses were conducted.Results. The staff rated a higher number of total and met needs than service users (p < 0.001). Only a slight agreement between users and staff on unmet needs was found in self-care (k = 0.106) and information (k = 0.100) needs, while a moderate agreement was found in accommodation (k = 0.484), food (k = 0.406), childcare (k = 0.530), physical health (k = 0.470), telephone (k = 0.458) and transport (k = 0.425) needs. Older age (-0.15; p < 0.01), longer SSD diagnosis (-0.16; p < 0.01), higher collaboration (-0.16; p < 0.01) and lower symptomatology (-0.16; p < 0.01) decreased the number of unmet needs, while being a female (0.27; p < 0.05) and a shorter length of stay in an RF (0.54; p < 0.001) increased the number of unmet needs. A higher number of unmet needs was associated with a lower amount of time spent in leisure activities or reporting a positive mood: on the contrary, more unmet needs were associated with a greater amount of time spent in religious or non-productive activities. Abstract

A study of magneto-transport through quantum dots is presented. The model allows to analyze tunnelling both from bulk-like contacts and from 2D accumulation layers. The fine features in the I-V characteristics due to the quantum dot states are known to be shifted to different voltages depending upon the value of the magnetic field. While this effect is also well reproduced by our calculations, in this work we concentrate on the amplitude of each current resonance as a function of the magnetic field. Such amplitudes show oscillations reflecting the variation of the density of states at the Fermi energy in the emitter. Furthermore the amplitude increases as a function of the magnetic field for certain features while it decreases for others. In particular we demonstrate that the behaviour of the amplitude of the current resonances is linked to the value of the angular momentum of each dot level through which tunnelling occurs. We show that a selection rule on the angular momentum must be satisfied. As a consequence, tunnelling through specific dot states is strongly suppresses and sometimes prohibited altogether by the presence of the magnetic field. This will allow to extract from the experimental curves detailed information on the nature of the quantum dot wavefunctions involved in the electronic transport. Furthermore, when tunnelling occurs from a 2D accumulation layer to the quantum dot, the presence of a magnetic field hugely increases the strength of some resonant features. Abstract

We present an experimental and theoretical study of electron tunnelling through quantum dots which focusses the attention on the amplitude of the current peaks as a function of magnetic field. We demonstrate that the amplitudes of the current peaks in the tunnelling spectra show a dramatically different behaviour as a function of the magnetic field, depending on the angular momentum of the dot state through which tunnelling occurs. This is seen in the non-monotonic behaviour of the current amplitude in magnetic field. Furthermore, the magnetic field severely hinders tunnelling through states with angular momentum parallel to the field, and in some cases it makes it altogether impossible. Further efforts are necessary to overcome Italian RF limits in delivering rehabilitative interventions defined by real users' needs to facilitate users' productivity and progress towards personal recovery.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the presence and pattern of incidental interstitial lung alterations suspicious of COVID-19 on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) ([18F]FDG PET/CT) in asymptomatic oncological patients during the period of active COVID-19 in a country with high prevalence of the virus. Methods: This is a multi-center retrospective observational study involving 59 Italian centers. We retrospectively reviewed the prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected during the COVID period (between March 16 and 27, 2020) and compared to a pre-COVID period (January–February 2020) and a control time (in 2019). The diagnosis of interstitial pneumonia was done considering lung alterations of CT of PET. Results: Overall, [18F]FDG PET/CT was performed on 4008 patients in the COVID period, 19,267 in the pre-COVID period, and 5513 in the control period. The rate of interstitial pneumonia suspicious for COVID-19 was significantly higher during the COVID period (7.1%) compared with that found in the pre-COVID (5.35%) and control periods (5.15%) (p < 0.001). Instead, no significant difference among pre-COVID and control periods was present. The prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected at PET/CT was directly associated with geographic virus diffusion, with the higher rate in Northern Italy. Among 284 interstitial pneumonia detected during COVID period, 169 (59%) were FDG-avid (average SUVmax of 4.1). Conclusions: A significant increase of interstitial pneumonia incidentally detected with [18F]FDG PET/CT has been demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A majority of interstitial pneumonia were FDG-avid. Our results underlined the importance of paying attention to incidental CT findings of pneumonia detected at PET/CT, and these reports might help to recognize early COVID-19 cases guiding the subsequent management.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the presence and pattern of incidental interstitial lung alterations suspicious of COVID-19 on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) ([18F]FDG PET/CT) in asymptomatic oncological patients during the period of active COVID-19 in a country with high prevalence of the virus. Methods: This is a multi-center retrospective observational study involving 59 Italian centers. We retrospectively reviewed the prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected during the COVID period (between March 16 and 27, 2020) and compared to a pre-COVID period (January–February 2020) and a control time (in 2019). The diagnosis of interstitial pneumonia was done considering lung alterations of CT of PET. Results: Overall, [18F]FDG PET/CT was performed on 4008 patients in the COVID period, 19,267 in the pre-COVID period, and 5513 in the control period. The rate of interstitial pneumonia suspicious for COVID-19 was significantly higher during the COVID period (7.1%) compared with that found in the pre-COVID (5.35%) and control periods (5.15%) (p < 0.001). Instead, no significant difference among pre-COVID and control periods was present. The prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected at PET/CT was directly associated with geographic virus diffusion, with the higher rate in Northern Italy. Among 284 interstitial pneumonia detected during COVID period, 169 (59%) were FDG-avid (average SUVmax of 4.1). Conclusions: A significant increase of interstitial pneumonia incidentally detected with [18F]FDG PET/CT has been demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A majority of interstitial pneumonia were FDG-avid. Our results underlined the importance of paying attention to incidental CT findings of pneumonia detected at PET/CT, and these reports might help to recognize early COVID-19 cases guiding the subsequent management.

36th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1979-1982, The present study is aimed at giving an update on patent activities in the photovoltaics (PV) field covering the past 45+ years. In this study, the number of patent applications published during this time period, per year and for the whole period, in several of the most relevant solar cell technologies is analysed. Patent filing figures and the origin of patent applications are shown for the different types of solar cells including organic solar cells, and dye sensitized solar cells.

Abstract

Quality of life (QOL) has been considered an important outcome measure in psychiatric research and determinants of QOL have been widely investigated. We aimed at detecting predictors of QOL at baseline and at testing the longitudinal interrelations of the baseline predictors with QOL scores at a 1-year follow-up in a sample of patients living in Residential Facilities (RFs). Logistic regression models were adopted to evaluate the association between WHOQoL-Bref scores and potential determinants of QOL. In addition, all variables significantly associated with QOL domains in the final logistic regression model were included by using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). We included 139 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum. In the final logistic regression model level of activity, social support, age, service satisfaction, spiritual well-being and symptoms' severity were identified as predictors of QOL scores at baseline. Longitudinal analyses carried out by SEM showed that 40% of QOL follow-up variability was explained by QOL at baseline, and significant indirect effects toward QOL at follow-up were found for satisfaction with services and for social support. Rehabilitation plans for people with schizophrenia living in RFs should also consider mediators of change in subjective QOL such as satisfaction with mental health services.
