4. Infections with helminths and/or protozoa in cats in animal shelters in the Netherlands

Abstract

To determine the prevalence of infections with helminths and protozoa in cats in animal shelters, faecal samples from 305 cats from 22 animal shelters in the Netherlands were examined, using a centrifugation-sedimentation-flotation-technique. The association between potential risk factors and the occurrence of an infection was also tested. Infections with helminths and/or protozoa were found in 160 samples (52.5%). Toxocara cati was found in 86 cats (28.2%), Cystoisospora felis in 59 cats (19.3%), Cystoisospora rivolta in 43 cats (14.1%), Capillaria spp. in 34 cats (11.2%), Ancylostoma tubaeforma in 9 cats (3.0%), Taenia taeniaeformis in 9 cats (3.0%), Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in 8 cats (2.6%), Giardia intestinalis in 3 cats (1.0%), Dipylidium caninum in 2 cats (0.7%) and Toxoplasma gondii in 1 cat (0.3%). The highest prevalence was seen in kittens and stray cats. The main preventive factor against infection was a short stay in a shelter. Om de prevalatie van infecties met helminthen en protozoën bij katten in de onderzochte asielen vast te stellen, zijn faecesmonsters van 305 katten uit 22 asielen in Nederland onderzocht met behulp van de centrifugatie-sedimentatie-flotatie-techniek. Ook is het verband tussen potentiële risicofactoren en het optreden van infecties getoetst. Kittens en gevonden katten bleken extra risico's te lopen op infecties en als preventieve factor kwam voornamelijk een kort verblijf in het asiel naar voren

Abstract

Faecal samples from 224 dogs from 23 animal shelters in the Netherlands were examined for endoparasites. In total 20.5% of the faecal sample were positive for helminth and/or protozoa infections. Eggs of Toxocara canis were found in 8.5% of the faecal samples. Other endoparasites found were Toxascaris leonina (0.5%), Trichuris vulpis (4.9%), Uncinaria stenocephala (2.2%), Dipylidium caninum (1.3%), Taenia spp. (0.5%), Cystoisospora canis (1.3%), and C. ohioensis (1.3%). Dogs younger than 1 year and stray dogs showed the highest prevalence of infection. T. vulpis was found more often in dogs from shelters with a high cleaning frequency. 8. The effect of rotational grazing for periods of one or two weeks on the build-up of lungworm and gastro-intestinal nematode infections in calves.

Abstract

An experiment was carried out with three groups of grazing calves and one housed control group to study the effect of rotational grazing for periods of 1 and 2 weeks on the build up of lungworm and gastro-intestinal nematode infections respectively. The experiment demonstrated that rotational grazing for periods of 1 week on six plots prevented the build-up of heavy lungworm infections. A build up of heavier lungworm infections was observed in a group that was rotationally grazed for periods of 2 weeks on three plots and a group which remained on one plot throughout the grazing season; there was no difference between these two groups. In all three situations, there was an adequate development of immunity against D. viviparus, as measured by worm recovery after challenge infection at the end of the experiment in comparison with worm recovery of the similarly challenged control group. Neither rotational grazing scheme protected the calves against gastrointestinal helminthiasis, because tracer calves, which grazed for 4 days only in August or October, acquired infections which would have resulted in severe illness or even death if necropsy had been postponed for a week.

34. Prevalence of benzimidazole resistance of nematodes in sheep in The Netherlands

Abstract

A survey was carried out in The Netherlands to determine the prevalence of benzimidazole resistance in sheep nematodes. It was shown that 47 per cent of the 59 investigated flocks harboured trichostrongylid populations with resistance to benzimidazoles, as demonstrated by an LD50 value of 0·12 μg ml–1thiabendazole or higher in an in vitro egg hatch assay. On these farms Haemonchus contortuswas found to be the dominant species. In two flocks resistant Ostertagiaand, or, Trichostrongylusspecies populations were found. Farms with resistance were revisited to determine the anthelmintic efficacy in vivo by means of treatment and egg count. In only four of the 19 flocks which showed resistance in vitro was an efficacy of less than 95 per cent in vivo achieved. This means that there is a discrepancy between the in vivo and in vitro results. Resistance was found more frequently on pure sheep farms than on mixed farms. It is suggested that mixed farms offer more refuge for susceptible H contortuspopulations.

35. Effect of repeated oxfendazole treatments on small strongyle infections in Shetland ponies

Abstract

Overwintering of horse cyathostomes as inhibited third stage larvae (L3) and the effect of repeated oxfendazole (ofz)treatment on strongyle infections were studied in an experiment with two groups of three Shetland ponies. Both groups were grazed together from May 28 to November 11, 1986 and subsequently housed. Treatments with 10 mg ofzkg−1were given on May 26, July 1 and July 28 and again one week before each group was necropsied in December and April, respectively. Worm populations of both groups were dominated by inhibited early L3. The proportion of fourth stage larvae (L4) was significantly higher in April than in December. The faecal egg counts showed that the ofztreatment in May was more effective than those in July. This resulted in high pasture larval counts from the end of August onwards. The final treatments revealed a low efficacy against L3 and L4 but not against adult worms.

36. Emergence from inhibited development of cyathostome larvae in ponies following failure to remove them by repeated treatments with benzimidazole compounds

Abstract

The effect of three albendazole treatments at 5-week intervals, beginning at turnout in April, on cyathostome infections in Shetland ponies was compared with the effect of sequential treatments with albendazole, oxfendazole and oxibendazole. The results showed a substantial reduction in faecal egg output after the first albendazole treatment. Since faecal egg counts remained very low, no estimation of the effect of the second treatment was possible. The third treatment with albendazole and oxibendazole was followed by an increase in faecal egg counts to values of > 100 eggs g−1within 4 weeks. A final albendazole treatment in December, 1 week before necropsy, failed to reduce faecal egg counts. These results suggest resistance to albendazole and oxibendazole in the cyathostome populations of the ponies.
