A van Kuelen fertilizer response model that._empirically integrates economic, agronomic and environmental considerations was applied to an analysis of nitrogen fertilization of corn in the Coastal Plains. The resu~ts suggest that the previous emphasis in the literature on "optimal carryover rat:esH and "fertilizing the soil" are inconsistent with both economic and environmental goals.

Abstract

In recent years, simulation has become an important methodology for applied decision analysis under uncertainty. A typical simulation effort requires generating a set of possibly correlated and non-normal random variables, using information regarding their underlying joint probability density function contained in a presumably random sample. A few techniques have been suggested to accomplish this task, but most have not met ·the requirement of being correct and efficient from the statistical point of view. This study proposes a multivariate hyperbolic sine probability density function as a basis to develop an efficient and theoretically consistent approach for generating correlated, non-normal random variables.

Abstract

For nearly five decades Congress has attempted to legislate both higher farm incomes and soil conservation. A national, interregional, demand-endogenous, separable programming model is used to analyze the potential of alternative policies to achieve simultaneously the dual goals of increased farm income and reduced soil erosion. The analysis indicates that a conservation-oriented land retirement policy can be designed to achieve an increase in net farm income equivalent to a traditional general land retirement policy, while simultaneously achieving significant reductions in gross soil erosion, chemical input use, and direct government program costs. 16. CLIMATIC VARIATION AND SURFACE WATER RESOURCES IN THE GREAT BASIN REGION.

Abstract

BSTRACT: There is mounting evidence that increasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide may lead to significant changes in global climate during the next century. The possible effects of such climatic changes on surface runoff in the Great Basin Region of the western United States has been investigated by applying water balance models to four watersheds in Nevada and Utah. The most probable change, a 2°C increase in average annual temperature coupled with a 10 percent decrease in precipitation, would reduce runoff from 17 to 28 percent of the present mean, with drier basins showing the greatest change. Decreasing precipitation by 25 percent causes runoff reductions of 33 to 51 percent. Equivalent changes to a cooler and wetter climate show corresponding increases in runoff of approximately the same magnitude, but such a shift is not considered likely. Based on projected water requirements for the year 2000, a change to a warmer and drier climate would cause severe water shortages in many parts of the Great Basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Properties of Selected Soils Developed Near the Forest‐Prairie Border in East‐Central Illinois

Abstract

Two Gray‐Brown Podzolic soils and two Gray‐Brown Podzolic to Brunizem intergrade (transition) soils which occur near the forest‐prairie border in east‐central Illinois were studied to determine the effect of vegetation upon soil properties. All four profiles developed in loess and calcareous till of similar age and in the same climatic area so that soil differences are related to length of occupancy by trees, forest composition, and natural drainage. The Gray‐Brown Podzolic soils are more highly weathered and show more forest influence than the transition soils. This is indicated by higher organic carbon content and base status in the Al horizons; higher clay maxima, higher cation‐exchange capacities, lower Ca/Mg ratios, and lower base status in the B2 horizons; and less organic matter in the lower horizons of the Gray‐Brown Podzolic soils than in the transition soils. The relationships between soil properties and the vegetation sequence in north‐central United States are reviewed.

20. Soil Conditions Under Old Field and Forest Cover in Southern Illinois

Abstract

A comparison of soil conditions under pine plantations and old fields of the same age was made for three loess‐derived soil types in southern Illinois. Native hardwood stands were used for comparing soil changes under the pine and old‐field seral stages. Characteristics studied included bulk density; hydraulic conductivity; organic content; pH; and exchangeable Ca, Mg, Na, K, and H. Under native hardwoods organic matter, pH, and exchangeable bases were higher, while bulk density was lower than under pine or old‐field cover. Under pine cover bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, and exchangeable base levels were improved over old‐field conditions, but organic matter was higher under the old‐field vegetation. No significant differences were noted in pH. The introduced pine seral stage has considerably ameliorated soil conditions since abandonment from agriculture, and there appears to be a trend toward conditions typical of native hardwood stands.

21. Early Effects of Forest Vegetation and Topographic Position on Dark‐Colored, Prairie‐Derived Soils

Abstract

A complete development range of soils from the Humic Gley (Haplaquolls) and Brunizem (Argiudolls) soils of the original tall grass prairie to well‐developed Brunizem‐Gray‐Brown Podzolic Intergrade (Mollic and Aquollic Hapludalfs) soils was studied in a recently forested “Prairie Grove” remnant in eastcentral Illinois. The first measurable changes occur in organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation. Alterations in color and structural development which distinguish a minimal A2 horizon are followed by accelerated movement of clay from the A to B horizons. Differences in soil development in an area of uniform forest occupancy are related to the physiographic position of the soil units and the subsequent retarding of normal forest soil development by conditions of excessive soil moisture.

22. Effects of Past Agricultural Practices on the Survival and Growth of Planted Trees

Abstract

Four pine species (loblolly, shortleaf, red, and white) and three hardwood species (sycamore, green ash, and yellow‐poplar) were planted on a recently abandoned agronomic experimental field in southern Illinois that had been used for 40 years to test crop rotations with various soil and fertilizer practices. After 7 growing seasons, pine survival and growth were poorest on the old limed plots (attributed to competition from weeds). After 6 growing seasons, hardwood survival and growth were best on the old limed plots. The effect of the tree species and the past fertilizer practices upon the chemical composition of the soil are given. Five years after plots were planted to pines, soil organic matter remained approximately the same on fertilized plots but nearly doubled on unfertilized plots.

TO THE EDITOR: —In The Journal, March 19, an item from your Kentucky correspondent is misleading in that it states that the cause of the failure of the bill was the statement made by Senator Linn in opposition to the bill that "the consolidation of the five medical colleges of Louisville resulted in a number of men losing their positions and this bill was the outcome of the ill-feeling resulting therefrom."Senator Linn was the political leader of the senate, and was simply following the dictates of the powerful influence brought to bear on him by the so-called University of Louisville, which has fought higher medical education all the time.This bill was the result of a petition endorsed unanimously last October by the State Medical Association urging the state to establish a medical department of the State University as a necessity for higher and better medical education. Abstract

Abstract: We have explored in this work the photo- and thermally-induced degradations of water soluble lignin in aqueous homogeneous media. Coordination complexes, Al(III) phthalocyaninetetrasulfonate ([AlIII(tspc)]3− and tspc6− =phthalocyaninetetrasulfonate) and CoIII/II dimethylglyoximate (dimethylglyoximate=DMG−) were used as catalysts of degrading processes with different mechanisms. The photodegradation was induced with visible light, λ exc ⩾470nm, and [AlIII(tspc)]3− as the photosensitizer of the (3Σg −)O2 to (1Δg)O2 conversion. (1Δg)O2 was the primary active species of the degrading process. [Co(DMG)2(SO3)2]3− and [Co(DMG)2Cl2]− in the presence and absence of SO3 2− were used as catalysts of the thermal lignin degrading process. Differences in the mechanisms of the photo and thermally induced processes lead to some diversity of products. Adducts formed in solutions containing [AlIII(tspc)]3− and lignin have the absorption spectrum of phthalocyanine oligomers and could be located in pockets of the lignin. Under a steady state irradiation, the attack of lignin by (1Δg)O2 was followed by changes in the spectrum of the solution and by the formation of various products. The participation of O2 ·− radicals in the mechanism photodegrading process was investigated with the pulse radiolysis technique. Different lignin radicals were produced when pulse radiolytically generated O2 ·− and N3 · radicals reacted with lignin. The CoIII/II dimethylglyoximate catalyzed lignin degrading process was investigated in the presence and absence of SO3 2−. Although the presence SO3 2− in the medium is not essential, it accelerates the degrading process. This observation shows the participation of inorganic S(V) radicals, e.g., SO3 ·−, as active species in the mechanism when SO3 2− is present. Moreover, the pulse radiolysis experiments demonstrate that O2 ·− can be an active species when SO3 2− is absent. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Objective: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be linked to implant failure by affecting bone metabolism and osseointegration. This study evaluated how PPIs influence long-term implant failure and peri-implantitis in PPI users and nonusers., Study Design: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients treated at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center between 2006 and 2013. The primary predictor variable was PPI use. Outcome variables were long-term implant failure and the presence of peri-implantitis. Data gathered included demographic characteristics, medical comorbidities, implant location, and dimensions. Multivariate regression models measured independent factor associations. The final study cohort contained 933 implants placed in 284 patients. A total of 323 (32.6%) implants were placed in patients with ongoing PPI use. PPI users were less likely to smoke (22.1% vs 31.9%; P < .01) and use illicit drugs (5.0% vs 9.7%; P = .01) and more likely to have undergone prior bone grafting (18.3% vs 12.9%; P = .03)., Results: PPI use lost significance after controlling for confounding factors and was not an independent predictor of implant failure (odds ratio [OR], 0.801; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56-1.15; P = .24) or peri-implantitis (OR, 0.801; 95% CI, 0.56-1.15; P = .24)., Conclusions: Our study found no independent associations between PPI use and implant failure or peri-implantitis. 50. Prophylactic Activation of Shh Signaling Attenuates TBI-Induced Seizures in Zebrafish by Modulating Glutamate Excitotoxicity through Eaat2a.

Abstract

Approximately 2 million individuals experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every year in the United States. Secondary injury begins within minutes after TBI, with alterations in cellular function and chemical signaling that contribute to excitotoxicity. Post-traumatic seizures (PTS) are experienced in an increasing number of TBI individuals that also display resistance to traditional anti-seizure medications (ASMs). Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is a signaling pathway that is upregulated following central nervous system damage in zebrafish and aids injury-induced regeneration. Using a modified Marmarou weight drop on adult zebrafish, we examined PTS following TBI and Shh modulation. We found that inhibiting Shh signaling by cyclopamine significantly increased PTS in TBI fish, prolonged the timeframe PTS was observed, and decreased survival across all TBI severities. Shh-inhibited TBI fish failed to respond to traditional ASMs, but were attenuated when treated with CNQX, which blocks ionotropic glutamate receptors. We found that the Smoothened agonist, purmorphamine, increased Eaat2a expression in undamaged brains compared to untreated controls, and purmorphamine treatment reduced glutamate excitotoxicity following TBI. Similarly, purmorphamine reduced PTS, edema, and cognitive deficits in TBI fish, while these pathologies were increased and/or prolonged in cyclopamine-treated TBI fish. However, the increased severity of TBI phenotypes with cyclopamine was reduced by cotreating fish with ceftriaxone, which induces Eaat2a expression. Collectively, these data suggest that Shh signaling induces Eaat2a expression and plays a role in regulating TBI-induced glutamate excitotoxicity and TBI sequelae.
