In the USA, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) has restored millions of acres of wetlands through its Wetland Reserve Easement (WRE) programs. However, few quantitative studies have explored whether WREs have enhanced wetland hydrology and wetland plant communities. Additionally, USDA Compatible Use Permits for cattle grazing and other management practices are sometimes issued for WREs, but little is known about potential benefits/detriments of such practice on the success of wetland restoration. In this study, we tested if hydrological restoration of previously drained species poor pastures increased water depth and hydroperiod. Restoration involved plugging key ditches, adding water control structures and a berm. We also tested if hydrological restoration increased plant diversity (alpha and beta), floristic quality (using coefficient of conservatism) and increased the cover of wetland species (using species wetland status). Finally, we tested if cattle grazing had an effect on the success of restoration by comparing grazed plots to fenced plots. We studied two conservation easements (a total of 748 acres) located on semi-native pastures in central Florida, USA. We monitored vegetation using permanent transects stratified by vegetation type before (2004–2005) and after (2012) the restoration (2008). We assessed wetland hydroperiod using groundwater wells set up in 2003 and located within and outside the boundaries of these two easements. We used linear mixed models and multivariate analyses to compare vegetation and hydroperiods pre- and post-restoration. Number of flooded days increased following restoration in one of the easements, but we did not detect significant changes in hydrology in the other easement. Floristic quality, beta diversity and cover of obligate wetland species increased in both conservation easements and in most vegetation types. These vegetation changes were likely due to restoration activities since annual rainfall was not significantly different pre- and post-restoration. Cattle grazing did not have a negative or positive effect on the success of restoration, nor did we detect any positive effect of grazing on the success of restoration. Overall, our study shows that hydrological restoration can enhance wetland hydroperiod, water depth and wetland vegetation, but more resources should be allocated to short- and long-term monitoring of the restoration success. Abstract: Semi-natural grasslands have become increasingly important to conservation in both temperate and subtropical regions due to their diversity and escalating pressures toward conversion or abandonment. As more semi-natural grasslands are incorporated into conservation easements or other protected areas, questions arise about appropriate management for maintaining biodiversity. We conducted an 8year split-plot experiment on the effect of season of burn and nutrient status on plant composition in semi-natural grassland released from ranchland management. Our objective was to find alternative approaches to manage semi-natural grasslands under varying nutrient enrichment when typical ranch management is ceased. We predicted that: (1) burning at high fertility would counteract competitive exclusion and increase diversity and that this increase would be greatest in the historical fire season (summer) to which species are adapted; and (2) that plant composition in plots released from disturbance would shift to greater abundance of competitive species, including shrubs, which would displace smaller grass and forb species and result in reduced diversity. Total species richness and graminoid richness were lowest in unburned, ungrazed plots. Graminoid richness was greatest in winter burned-grazed plots (due mainly to sedges) and forb richness was greatest in summer burn plots. In unburned plots, after 5years, a native shrub, Eupatorium capillifolium (Lam.) Small, and native forb, Lachnanthes caroliniana (Lam.) Dandy, became abundant and grasses declined. Winter burn plots were dominated by a small shrub, Euthamia graminifolia (L.) Nutt. var. hirtipes (Fernald) C. and J. Taylor. Our experiment suggests that maintaining grassland structure and reducing shrub cover in grasslands released from typical ranchland management in subtropical Florida requires burning, and that summer is the most beneficial season of burn to reduce shrub encroachment and encourage both graminoid and forb richness. Grazing lands and rangelands are increasingly recognized as an important alternative to other developed land uses for sustaining ecological communities in Florida, the rest of the southeastern United States, and other regions. It is important to understand factors that influence ecological communities on private grazing lands, especially in areas with abundant wetlands, which are often sensitive habitats. This study examined the effects of different vegetation types and simulated grazing (clipping) on the abundance, diversity, and composition of the invertebrate community in seasonally flooded, isolated wetlands on a cattle ranch in south-central Florida. We compared invertebrate communities in wetland areas dominated by two different types of vegetation: emergent macrophytes (Pontederia cordata [Pickerelweed]) and grasses (primarily Luziola fluitans [Southern Watergrass]). There was a trend toward greater abundance and diversity of invertebrates in grass-dominated communities. Experimental removal of vegetation to simulate heavy grazing significantly decreased the abundance and diversity of invertebrates. It also shifted the community composition of invertebrates to favor members of Diptera and Ostracoda. Management practices in grazed wetlands that use light or intermediate levels of grazing, or that foster a greater diversity of vegetative cover, may support more diverse and populous wetland invertebrate communities. Abstract: Livestock significantly affect wetland soils and vegetation but their impacts on wetland nutrient dynamics are poorly understood. We set up a full factorial laboratory experiment to assess the effects of Juncus effusus, grazing exclusion, and flooding on P flux from intact cores collected from seasonal wetlands in cattle pastures in south Florida. We collected intact cores from Juncus tussocks and plant interspaces inside and outside 4-year grazing exclosures in five replicate wetlands. We incubated the cores for 50 days under continuous flooding or weekly 1-day flooding cycles and measured P concentrations in surface and pore water. Grazing exclosures had less Juncus (17%) and bare ground (2%) than adjacent grazed areas (Juncus, 48%; bare ground, 12%), but did not affect P fluxes. Initial fluxes of soluble reactive P (SRP) were much higher in cores with Juncus (242±153mgPm−2 day−1) than without Juncus (14±20mgPm−2 day−1). In weekly flooded cores P fluxes fell to 19.7±13.4mgPm−2 day−1 in cores with and 2.7±2.6 in cores without Juncus. The strong effect of Juncus on P flux was an indirect effect of cattle grazing, but 4 years of grazing exclusion did not have a significant effect on P fluxes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Understanding the effects of agricultural land use on wetland N cycling is critical in areas such as south-central Florida, where widespread agricultural activities intersect with extensive wetland systems. We examined annual net N mineralization (Nmin) (buried-core method) and denitrification rates (acetylene-block method) in 24 small seasonal wetlands on a cattle ranch in this region, 12 each in intensively managed improved pastures (IP) and less intensively managed semi-native pastures (SNP). Wetlands in IP had less detritus, higher N concentrations, lower C/N ratios (0-15 cm), and higher microbial biomass N than did wetlands in SNP Cumulative annual net Nmin was lower in IP wetlands (98 ± 17 kg N ha-1) than in SNP wetlands (133 ± 18kg N ha-1). Nitrification was much lower in IP than in SNP wetlands and dominated net Nmin during the dry season (December-June), but was negligible during the flooded period (July-October). Cumulative annual denitrification was lower in IP wetlands (17.7 ± 3.4 kg N ha-1) than in SNP wetlands (34.7 ± 6.3 kg N ha-1). Soil N cycling rates correlated with NO3- and NH4+ concentrations, which correlated with soil C content. Our results show that the more intensive management of improved pastures was associated with declines in wetland soil C content and lower rates of nitrification and denitrification. Abstract: The 9th biennial meeting of the Soil Ecology Society held in Palm Springs, CA in May 2003, addressed the theme of “Invasive species and soil ecology”. This meeting prompted interest in pursuing this special issue of Applied Soil Ecology, which includes papers presented at the meeting and other papers contributed after the meeting. This paper highlights some of the major issues addressed at the meeting and in the subsequent papers published in this special issue, and also provides a conceptual framework for examining interactions between aboveground and belowground invasions. Many biological functions of soil organisms are replaced in intensive agricultural systems, but earthworms and other soil invertebrates may continue to have significant effects on nutrient cycling in these disturbed systems. We investigated the influence of earthworms on leaching of water and nitrogen in corn (Zea maysL.) agroecosystems in a long-term (6-year) field experiment in Wooster, Ohio, USA. We employed a split-plot experimental design in which main plots received one of three nutrient treatments (cow manure, legume-grass mixture, inorganic fertilizer) and contained three 4.5 × 4.5-m field enclosures in which earthworm populations were increased, decreased, or unmodified. We installed zero-tension lysimeters beneath enclosures with increased or decreased populations and collected leachates regularly in 1996, analyzing them for water volume and concentrations of NH4+, NO3-, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Earthworms did not influence concentrations of inorganic N or DON but greatly increased leachate volume. The total flux of N in soil leachates was 2.5-fold greater in plots with increased earthworm populations than in those with decreased populations. Earthworm population density was positively correlated with total N leaching flux (r2 = 0.49). Leaching losses of N to a depth of 45 cm were greater in the inorganically fertilized than in the organically fertilized plots, possibly due to greater inorganic N concentrations and lower immobilization potential in inorganically fertilized systems. The invasion of north temperate forests by exotic species of earthworms is an important issue that has been overlooked in the study and management of these forests. We initiated research to address the hypothesis that earthworm invasion will have large consequences for nutrient retention and uptake in these ecosystems. In this special feature of Ecosystems, we present five papers describing results from our experiment. In this paper, we (a) introduce our experimental approach and conceptual model of how earthworms influence forest ecosystem processes, (b) describe the characteristics of the study areas and earthworm communities at our two study locations, and (c) provide a brief overview and synthesis of the main findings. The most dramatic effect of earthworm invasion was the loss of the forest floor at an undisturbed forest site, which altered the location and nature of nutrient cycling activity in the soil profile. Invasion changed soil total carbon (C) and phosphorus (P) pools, carbon—nitrogen (C:N) ratios, the loss and distribution of different soil P fractions, and the distribution and function of roots and microbes. Response to invasion varied with site characteristics and earthworm species. Our results suggest that exotic earthworm invasion is a significant factor that will influence the structure and function of northern temperate forest ecosystems over the next few decades. Regional evaluations of these forests will need to consider the presence or absence of earthworms along with other important ecosystem drivers, such as pollution, climate, and underlying soil characteristics. Invasion of north temperate forest soils by exotic earthworms has the potential to alter microbial biomass and activity over large areas of North America. We measured the distribution and activity of microbial biomass in forest stands invaded by earthworms and in adjacent stands lacking earthworms in sugar maple-dominated forests in two locations in New York State, USA: one with a history of cultivation and thin organic surface soil horizons (forest floors) and the other with no history of cultivation and a thick (3–5 cm) forest floor. Earthworm invasion greatly reduced pools of microbial biomass in the forest floor and increased pools in the mineral soil. Enrichment of the mineral soil was much more marked at the site with thick forest floors. The increase in microbial biomass carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in the mineral soil at this site was larger than the decrease in the forest floor, resulting in a net increase in total soil profile microbial biomass in the invaded plots. There was an increase in respiration in the mineral soil at both sites, which is consistent with a movement of organic matter and microbial biomass into the mineral soil. However, N-cycle processes (mineralization and nitrification) did not increase along with respiration. It is likely that the earthworm-induced input of C into the mineral soil created a microbial ‘sink’ for N, preventing an increase in net mineralization and nitrification and conserving N in the soil profile. We analyzed soil organic matter distribution and soil solution chemistry in plots with and without earthworms at two sugar maple (Acer saccharum)—dominated forests in New York State, USA, with differing land-use histories to assess the influence of earthworm invasion on the retention or loss of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in northern temperate forests. Our objectives were to assess the influence of exotic earthworm invasion on (a) the amount and depth distribution of soil C and N, (b) soil δ13C and δ15N, and (c) soil solution chemistry and leaching of C and N in forests with different land-use histories. At a relatively undisturbed forest site (Arnot Forest), earthworms eliminated the thick forest floor, decreased soil C storage in the upper 12 cm by 28%, and reduced soil C:N ratios from 19.2 to 15.3. At a previously cultivated forest site with little forest floor (Tompkins Farm), earthworms did not influence the storage of soil C or N or soil C:N ratios. Earthworms altered the stable isotopic signature of soil at Arnot Forest but not at Tompkins Farm; the alteration of stable isotopes indicated that earthworms significantly increased the loss of forest floor C but not N from the soil profile at Arnot Forest. Nitrate (NO3 ¯) concentrations in tension and zerotension lysimeters were much greater at Tompkins Farm than Arnot Forest, and earthworms increased NO3 ¯ leaching at Tompkins Farm. The results suggest that the effect of earthworm invasion on the distribution, retention, and solution chemistry of soil C and N in northern temperate forests may depend on the initial quantity and quality of soil organic matter at invaded sites. Aims: The stress gradient hypothesis predicts that competition will be important in productive environments while facilitation will be common in environments with high stress or consumer pressure. However, abiotic stress and grazing may vary independently and even occur simultaneously. Here we examine the outcome of plant interactions in grazed wetlands where consumer pressure and abiotic stress occur concurrently. We hypothesized that cattle grazing and microhabitat would alter the outcome of plant interactions. Given that wetland edges are drier and less productive than wetland centers we expected that facilitation would be greatest in drier wetland edges due to greater abiotic stress regardless of cattle presence. Location: Archbold Biological Station's Buck Island Ranch (BIR), south‐central Florida, USA (27°09′ N, 81°11′ W). Methods: We conducted an experiment for two growing seasons in ten wetlands, five exposed to cattle grazing and five fenced. Two wetland obligate plants were included (Panicum hemitomon and Alternanthera philoxeroides), and plots were assigned to three treatments (a) all neighbors removed; (b) all neighbors removed except Juncus effusus, a dominant, unpalatable plant; and (c) all neighbors intact (control), in both wetland centers and edges. Differences in survival, change in height and number of leaves were assessed. Results: In ungrazed wetlands, plant survival was higher in wetland edges vs centers, while it did not differ between microhabitats in grazed wetlands. Survival in wetland edges was further increased by the presence of Juncus effusus. Positive interactions under grazed conditions were clear when plant height was assessed, but negative interactions affected leaf production in both ungrazed and grazed wetlands. Conclusions: Grazing interacts with wetland microhabitat to alter plant survival. Facilitative interactions on plant height were apparent in grazed wetlands. Pasture management intensity, livestock grazing and prescribed fire are three widespread agricultural practices that affect small, isolated wetlands, but few studies have investigated their individual and interactive effects. Pasture management intensity refers to the degree of human alteration of grassland, ranging from intensively managed pastures planted with introduced forage, fertilizer/lime additions and artificial drainage to semi-natural pastures with mixed native and non-native vegetation, no fertilizer/lime additions and little or no artificial drainage., We examined individual and interactive effects of these three agricultural practices on individual, isolated wetlands using a replicated, full-factorial experiment on 40 entire wetlands in south Florida, USA. Wetlands were embedded in two pasture management intensities: intensively managed and semi-natural., After three years of treatment initiation, vegetation of wetlands released from grazing and unburned embedded in semi-natural pastures had significantly lower evenness and coefficient of conservatism scores compared to wetlands released from grazing and burned, grazed unburned wetlands and grazed burned wetlands in the same pasture management intensity. For wetlands embedded in intensively managed pastures, evenness and coefficient of conservatism scores did not differ among treatments., Release from grazing increased abundance of the native, weedy herb, Eupatorium capillifolium., Grazing interacted with prescribed fire to affect shrub abundance and non-native richness; relative abundance of shrubs and non-native richness were greater in wetlands released from grazing and burned and did not differ among burn treatments in grazed wetlands. Vegetation diversity and floristic quality of wetlands embedded in intensively managed pastures resisted common restoration management techniques such as release from grazing and prescribed fire, at least in the short term. In contrast, removing all top-down disturbances from wetlands embedded in semi-natural grasslands can negatively affect vegetation species diversity and floristic quality. Abstract: During the last several decades, colonization of soil by exotic earthworms and their effects on soil properties and biodiversity have been reported in forests of North America. In some northern hardwood stands, acid soils or harsh climate may have prevented earthworm colonization. However, climatic change and the increasing use of liming to restore the vigor of declining sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stands, situated on base-poor soils in USA and Canada, could make many of these sites more suitable for earthworm colonization. We tested survival and reproduction of two exotic earthworm species (Lumbricus terrestris and Amynthas hawayanus) in unlimed and limed soils at the northern limit of the northern hardwood forest distribution in Canada. Improving soil parameters of base-poor, acidic soils by liming positively influenced activity, survivability and reproductive output of L. terrestris in this northern hardwood forest. In contrast, the high mortality and low vigor of L. terrestris observed in the unlimed plots show that soils in this area with a pH of 4.3 are not favorable to this species. Our results suggest that A. hawayanus was very active prior to winter at both soil pHs, but was not able to complete its life cycle during one year at this latitude. Both earthworm species significantly reduced organic C and total N, and increased the C/N ratio of the forest floor. Given that forest liming activities are increasing in proximity to human activities, there is high probability that some earthworm species, such as L. terrestris, will invade limed northern hardwood forests in the next decades, with possible consequences for soil organic matter turnover, nutrient cycling and forest biodiversity and dynamics. Summary 1. Plant-plant interactions fluctuate between competition and facilitation depending upon ecological conditions and species traits. Facilitative interactions are expected to increase in frequency via associational defences with increasing consumer pressure. The ability of species to cope with competition and/or ecological stressors may alter the outcome of plant-plant interactions. 2. We conducted a transplant experiment to determine if native and non-native grasses and forbs respond similarly to interactions with Juncus effusus L., an unpalatable benefactor species, along a grazing intensity gradient in two contrasting pasture types: intensively managed and semi-natural. We expected competitive taller, erect species (grasses) and non-natives to obtain stronger facilitative effects than shorter, sprawling species (forbs) and natives. 3. We transplanted two species each of grasses and forbs, including one native and one non-native species of each, into 1-m2 grazed plots or exclosure plots either with or without Juncus in wetlands experiencing a range of grazing intensities across the two pasture types. 4. Interactions with Juncus varied from facilitation in grazed plots to competition in exclosures for the two grasses and the non-native forb. Juncus did not facilitate the native forb in grazed conditions. Grazing negatively influenced all species. For the grasses, facilitation intensity increased as grazing intensity increased, while facilitation intensity for forbs was unrelated to grazing intensity. 5. Synthesis. Facilitation intensity of a dominant macrophyte increased with consumer pressure for tall grasses in productive subtropical wetlands. These findings suggest that facilitation can allow native and non-native species to pass through human-induced ecological filters, such as cattle grazing, with implications for understanding forces governing community composition in disturbed environments. Different management regimes imposed on similar habitat types provide opportunities to investigate mechanisms driving community assembly and changes in species composition. We investigated the effect of pasture management on vegetation composition in wetlands with varying spatial isolation on a Florida cattle ranch. We hypothesized that increased pasture management intensity would dampen the expected negative effect of wetland isolation on native species richness due to a change from dispersal-driven community assembly to niche-driven assembly by accentuated environmental tolerance. We used native plant richness, exotic plant richness and mean coefficient of conservatism (CC) to assess wetland plant assemblage composition. Sixty wetlands were sampled, stratified by three levels of isolation across two pasture management intensities; semi-native (less intensely managed; mostly native grasses, never fertilized) and agronomically improved (intensely managed, planted with exotic grasses, and fertilized). Improved pasture wetlands had lower native richness and CC scores, and greater total soil phosphorus and exotic species coverage compared to semi-native pasture wetlands. Increased wetland isolation was significantly associated with decreases in native species richness in semi-native pasture wetlands but not in improved pasture wetlands. Additionally, the species–area relationship was stronger in wetlands in improved pastures than semi-native pastures. Our results indicate that a) native species switch from dispersal-based community assembly in semi-native pastures to a species-sorting process in improved pastures, and b) recently-introduced exotic species already sorted for more intensive management conditions are primarily undergoing dispersal-based community assembly. That land-use may alter the relative importance of assembly processes and that different processes drive native and exotic richness has implications for both ecosystem management and restoration planning. Global change drivers (GCDs) are expected to alter community structure and consequently, the services that ecosystems provide. Yet, few experimental investigations have examined effects of GCDs on plant community structure across multiple ecosystem types, and those that do exist present conflicting patterns. In an unprecedented global synthesis of over 100 experiments that manipulated factors linked to GCDs, we show that herbaceous plant community responses depend on experimental manipulation length and number of factors manipulated. We found that plant communities are fairly resistant to experimentally manipulated GCDs in the short term (<10 y). In contrast, long-term (=10 y) experiments show increasing community divergence of treatments from control conditions. Surprisingly, these community responses occurred with similar frequency across the GCD types manipulated in our database. However, community responses were more common when 3 or more GCDs were simultaneously manipulated, suggesting the emergence of additive or synergistic effects of multiple drivers, particularly over long time periods. In half of the cases, GCD manipulations caused a difference in community composition without a corresponding species richness difference, indicating that species reordering or replacement is an important mechanism of community responses to GCDs and should be given greater consideration when examining consequences of GCDs for the biodiversity-ecosystem function relationship. Human activities are currently driving unparalleled global changes worldwide. Our analyses provide the most comprehensive evidence to date that these human activities may have widespread impacts on plant community composition globally, which will increase in frequency over time and be greater in areas where communities face multiple GCDs simultaneously. Growing demand for food from finite agricultural lands requires the optimization of agricultural management, including the potential interactive effects of these practices on ecosystems. We experimentally examined the interactive and temporal effects of three ranching practices (pasture management intensity, livestock grazing, and prescribed fire) on soil nutrients in 40 geographically-isolated seasonal wetlands. Wetlands were embedded in a subtropical ranch, and the long-term experiment used a factorial design with wetlands as experimental units. Soils (0–15 cm) were collected three times over 9 years; at experiment start (2007), one year after prescribed burns started (2009), and seven years later (2016). Samples were analyzed for soil bulk density, organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (N), carbon (C), and phosphorous (P). A lag effect was observed in response to fire; differences were not observed in 2009, but were detected in 2016 after multiple fire cycles had occurred. Rangeland practices showed 2- and 3-way interactive effects, especially for total P and N stocks. Total P increased most in the wetlands embedded within highly managed, grazed, and burned pastures (2.31 ± 0.76 g m −2 yr −1 ), consistent with legacy effects of historical fertilizer application, cattle activity, and ash deposit due to fire. Wetlands in semi-natural and burned pastures had the lowest rates of soil N storage (5.13 ± 7.33 g m −2 yr −1 ) compared to all other treatments (24.5 ± 10.8 g m −2 yr −1 ). Total C stocks were not significantly impacted by ranching practices throughout the study. In summary, ranching practices can additively and interactively alter soil nutrient stocks after a time lag, and legacy effects of P application still impact wetlands decades later. Our study is one of few focused on ranchland wetlands and shows that wetlands in highly managed, grazed, and/or burned pastures can sequester soil P and N, playing an important role in nutrient processing for agricultural landscapes and watersheds. Greater understanding of land management effects on species richness and composition is needed to manage biodiversity-related ecosystem services in agricultural ecosystems. Here we studied responses of vascular plants, macroinvertebrates, and ectothermic vertebrates to local and regional factors in two ranchland management intensities (semi-natural and highly-managed). Samples were collected in 40 separate wetlands embedded in the two management intensities. Based on community assembly theory, we expected a shift from regional to local-based factors as predictors of communities where local conditions become more limiting. We also expected highly managed ranchlands to most strongly “filter” community membership to become more homogeneous. Both predictions were supported though results sometimes differed among taxa. Wetland communities embedded in highly managed pastures were more homogeneous and significantly different from those in semi-natural pastures. Overall, regional factors related to propagule dispersal were most important in semi-natural pastures, and local factors (especially nutrients) were most important in highly managed pastures. However, some community metrics were consistently affected most by local or regional factors regardless of land use intensity. For instance, vegetation richness and vertebrate composition were consistently influenced by local factors, whereas macroinvertebrate composition was consistently influenced by regional factors. Based on our results, biodiversity conservation will be most effective if management efforts focus on improving local habitat conditions in highly managed areas, and on preserving regional heterogeneity in more natural areas. Earthworms have been shown to produce contrasting effects on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools and dynamics. We measured soil C and N pools and processes and traced the flow of 13C and 15N from sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) litter into soil microbial biomass and respirable C and mineralizable and inorganic N pools in mature northern hardwood forest plots with variable earthworm communities. Previous studies have shown that plots dominated by either Lumbricus rubellus or Lumbricus terrestris have markedly lower total soil C than uncolonized plots. Here we show that total soil N pools in earthworm colonized plots were reduced much less than C, but significantly so in plots dominated by contain L. rubellus. Pools of microbial biomass C and N were higher in earthworm-colonized (especially those dominated by L. rubellus) plots and more 13C and 15N were recovered in microbial biomass and less was recovered in mineralizable and inorganic N pools in these plots. These plots also had lower rates of potential net N mineralization and nitrification than uncolonized reference plots. These results suggest that earthworm stimulation of microbial biomass and activity underlie depletion of soil C and retention and maintenance of soil N pools, at least in northern hardwood forests. Earthworms increase the carrying capacity of soil for microbial biomass and facilitate the flow of N from litter into stable soil organic matter. Question: Does management intensity affect the association between non-native and native species and between non-native species and soil nutrients in wetlands? Location: MacArthur Agro-Ecology Research Center, Florida, USA. Methods: We evaluated native and non-native plant richness and relative frequency in 15 1-m2 plots in 40 wetlands across two types of pastures, highly managed (fertilized, ditched, planted, heavily grazed by cattle) and semi-natural (unfertilized, lightly seasonally grazed). Plant biomass was collected in five 0.25-m2 plots per wetland and sorted to species. Soil cores were collected to analyse soil total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). An information-theoretic approach was used to compare mixed effects models considering the association of non-native richness, relative frequency, and biomass with native richness, relative frequency, biomass, C3 grass relative frequency (a dominant native group), N, P and wetland-type. Results: Non-native richness was negatively correlated with native richness in semi-natural wetlands, but there was no evidence of an association between these variables in highly managed wetlands. Non-native richness increased with increasing soil N in semi-natural wetlands, but not in the highly managed wetlands. Soil P was positively related to non-native frequency in semi-natural wetlands but negatively related in highly managed wetlands. Non-native frequency and biomass were negatively related to relative frequency of C3 grasses in both management types. Conclusions: Our results indicate that management intensity influences relationships between native and non-native richness. Recent studies have reported that earthworm invasions alter native communities and impact nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. We developed a simulation model to evaluate the potential impacts of earthworm invasions on carbon dynamics, taking into consideration earthworm feeding strategies and priming effects on the microorganisms through their casting activities. Responses of carbon stocks (forest litter, soil organic matter, microbial biomass and earthworm populations) and carbon fluxes (litter decomposition, earthworm consumption, and microbial respiration) were used to evaluate an earthworm invasion of a forest ecosystem. Data from a northern temperate forest (Arnot Forest, New York) were adapted for model calibration and evaluation. Simulation results suggest that the impact and outcome of earthworm invasions are affected by pre-invasion resource availability (litter and soil organic matter), invasive earthworm assemblages (particularly feeding strategy), and invasion history (associated with earthworm population dynamics). The abovementioned factors may also determine invasion progress of earthworm species. The accuracy of the model could be improved by the addition of environmental modules (e.g., soil water regimes), precise parameters accounting for individual species attributes under different environmental conditions (e.g. utilization ability of different types of food resources), as well as earthworm population dynamics (size and structure) and interactions with predators and other invasive/indigenous species during the invasion progress. Such an earthworm invasion model could provide valuable evaluation of the complicated responses of carbon dynamics to earthworm invasions in a range of forest ecosystems, particularly under global change scenarios. Climate and litter quality are primary drivers of terrestrial decomposition and, based on evidence from multisite experiments at regional and global scales, are universally factored into global decomposition models. In contrast, soil animals are considered key regulators of decomposition at local scales but their role at larger scales is unresolved. Soil animals are consequently excluded from global models of organic mineralization processes. Incomplete assessment of the roles of soil animals stems from the difficulties of manipulating invertebrate animals experimentally across large geographic gradients. This is compounded by deficient or inconsistent taxonomy. We report a global decomposition experiment to assess the importance of soil animals in C mineralization, in which a common grass litter substrate was exposed to natural decomposition in either control or reduced animal treatments across 30 sites distributed from 43°S to 68°N on six continents. Animals in the mesofaunal size range were recovered from the litter by Tullgren extraction and identified to common specifications, mostly at the ordinal level. The design of the trials enabled faunal contribution to be evaluated against abiotic parameters between sites. Soil animals increase decomposition rates in temperate and wet tropical climates, but have neutral effects where temperature or moisture constrain biological activity. Our findings highlight that faunal influences on decomposition are dependent on prevailing climatic conditions. We conclude that (1) inclusion of soil animals will improve the predictive capabilities of region- or biome-scale decomposition models, (2) soil animal influences on decomposition are important at the regional scale when attempting to predict global change scenarios, and (3) the statistical relationship between decomposition rates and climate, at the global scale, is robust against changes in soil faunal abundance and diversity. The efflux of carbon from soils is a critical link between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Current concerns about rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations highlight the need to better understand the dynamics of total soil respiration (TSR, sum of root and heterotroph respiration) in changing environments. We investigated the effects of exotic earthworm invasion on TSR, fine-root distributions, and aboveground litterfall flux in two sugar maple-dominated forests in two locations in New York State, USA. The Arnot Forest in central New York was harvested in the late 19th century and has no history of cultivation. Tompkins Farm in eastern New York regenerated following abandonment from cultivation approximately 75 years ago. Arnot had 20% higher total soil CO2 efflux (880 g C m-2year-1) than Tompkins (715 g C m-2year-1). The presence of earthworms had no influence on TSR at either location. However, fineroot (< 1 mm diameter) biomass in earthworm plots (350 g/m²) was significantly lower than in worm-free reference plots (440 g/m²) at Arnot. Fine-root nitrogen (N) concentrations were not influenced by earthworms, and total fine-root N content was significantly reduced in the presence of earthworms at Arnot. Our results indicate that the presence of exotic earthworms is not presently affecting net C emission from soil in these forests. They also suggest a change in root function in earthworm plots that is not associated with higher fine-root N concentration, but that increases efficiency of nutrient uptake and also may enhance the belowground supply of C for heterotroph metabolism. We compared the biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus (P) in northern hardwood forest plots invaded by exotic earthworms versus adjacent uninvaded reference plots. In three of the six pairs of plots, earthworm invasion resulted in significantly more total P in the upper 12 cm of soil. The finding of increased amounts of unavailable and occluded inorganic P forms in the invaded plots suggests that earthworm activity mobilized unweathered soil particles from deeper layers of the soil, increasing the stocks of total P in surface soils. In two pairs of plots, the earthworm-invaded soils had less total P than the reference soils. In these plots, earthworm activity resulted in augmented rates of P cycling and alteration of the physical structure of the soil that increased loss of P in leaching water, reducing the total amount of P. We hypothesize that the different effects of earthworm invasion on the soil P cycle result from unique characteristics of the ecological groups of earthworms dominating each site. The invaded plots with increased total P were dominated by the anecic species Lumbricus terrestris, a large earthworm that constructs deep, vertical burrows and is effective at moving soil materials from and to deeper layers of the profile. In contrast, the earthworm-invaded plots where the total P in the surface soil decreased were dominated by the epiendogeic species L. rubellus, which feeds and lives in the upper organic layers of the soil. Recent invasion and activity of exotic earthworms has profoundly altered the chemical and physical environment of surface soils in northern hardwood forests that previously had mor humus horizons. We investigated the influence of earthworm invasion on soil microbial biomass and activity in surface soils of Allegheny northern hardwood forests in central New York state. Earthworm activity in these sites had transformed surface soils with clear Oi, Oe, and Oa horizons (forest floor) overlying mineral soil, to more uniformly mixed organic-enriched A horizons. The highest concentrations of microbial biomass and activity occurred in the forest floor. Microbial biomass (assayed by chloroform fumigation–extraction) nearly doubled in surface (0–5 cm) mineral soils in response to earthworm activity, an effect that corresponded directly to redistribution of organic matter from forest floor into the mineral soil. Microbial activity in surface mineral soils was even more sensitive to the presence of earthworms than microbial biomass. For example, substrate-induced respiration (or maximum initial respiratory rate, MIRR) was 6.7-fold greater, basal respiration was 5-fold greater, and microbial respiration per unit microbial biomass (metabolic quotient, qCO2) was almost 3-fold greater in surface mineral soils where earthworms were present than in earthworm-free sites. Of the activity indices, only MIRR was higher when expressed on an organic matter basis. Surface mineral soils where earthworms were present thus appear to retain a high proportion of the microbial biomass and activity found in mor organic horizons. Our findings suggest that earthworm activity stimulates the activity of soil microorganisms, probably by enhancing organic C availability via processing and mixing of litter. The relative pattern in microbial properties did not change over the growing season; however, there were some seasonal changes in the proportional differences between worm and no-worm soils. Our results indicate interactions among earthworms, organic matter, and soil microbial activity that should alter the carbon and nutrient balance of northern hardwood forest surface soils, relative to non-invaded soils.
