Efficient magnetic control of electronic conduction is at the heart of spintronic functionality for memory and logic applications1,2. Magnets with topological band crossings serve as a good material platform for such control, because their topological band degeneracy can be readily tuned by spin configurations, dramatically modulating electronic conduction3–10. Here we propose that the topological nodal-line degeneracy of spin-polarized bands in magnetic semiconductors induces an extremely large angular response of magnetotransport. Taking a layered ferrimagnet, Mn3Si2Te6, and its derived compounds as a model system, we show that the topological band degeneracy, driven by chiral molecular orbital states, is lifted depending on spin orientation, which leads to a metal–insulator transition in the same ferrimagnetic phase. The resulting variation of angular magnetoresistance with rotating magnetization exceeds a trillion per cent per radian, which we call colossal angular magnetoresistance. Our findings demonstrate that magnetic nodal-line semiconductors are a promising platform for realizing extremely sensitive spin- and orbital-dependent functionalities. A study reports a colossal angular magnetoresistance in the topological magnet Mn3Si2Te6, resulting from a metal-to-insulator transition caused by controlled lifting of a topological band degeneracy, and discusses the key parameters involved.

Semiclassical quantization of electronic states under a magnetic field, as proposed by Onsager, describes not only the Landau level spectrum but also the geometric responses of metals under a magnetic field1-5. Even in graphene with relativistic energy dispersion, Onsager's rule correctly describes the π Berry phase, as well as the unusual Landau level spectrum of Dirac particles6,7. However, it is unclear whether this semiclassical idea is valid in dispersionless flat-band systems, in which an infinite number of degenerate semiclassical orbits are allowed. Here we show that the semiclassical quantization rule breaks down for a class of dispersionless flat bands called 'singular flat bands'8. The singular flat band has a band crossing with another dispersive band that is enforced by the band-flatness condition, and shows anomalous magnetic responses. The Landau levels of a singular flat band develop in the empty region in which no electronic states exist in the absence of a magnetic field, and exhibit an unusual 1/n dependence on the Landau level index n, which results in diverging orbital magnetic susceptibility. The total energy spread of the Landau levels of a singular flat band is determined by the quantum geometry of the relevant Bloch states, which is characterized by their Hilbert-Schmidt quantum distance. We show that there is a universal and simple relationship between the total Landau level spread of a flat band and the maximum Hilbert-Schmidt quantum distance, which can be verified in various candidate materials. The results indicate that the anomalous Landau level spectrum of flat bands is promising for the direct measurement of the quantum geometry of wavefunctions in condensed matter.

Linking structure is a new concept characterizing topological semimetals, which indicates the interweaving of gap-closing nodes at the Fermi energy ($E_F$) with other nodes below $E_F$. As the number of linked nodes can be changed only via pair-creation or pair-annihilation, a linked node is more stable and robust than ordinary nodes without linking. Here we propose a new type of a linked nodal structure between a nodal line (nodal surface) at $E_F$ with another nodal line (nodal surface) below $E_F$ in two-dimensional (three-dimensional) spinless fermion systems with $\mathcal{IT}$ symmetry where $\mathcal{I}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ indicate inversion and time-reversal symmetries, respectively. Because of additional chiral and rotational symmetries, in our system, a double band inversion creates a pair of linked nodes carrying the same topological charges, thus the pair are unremovable via a Lifshiftz transition, which is clearly distinct from the cases of the linked nodes reported previously. A realistic tight binding model and effective theory are developed for such a linking structure. Also, using density functional theory calculations, we propose a class of materials, composed of stacked bilayer graphene with Kekul\'{e} texture, as a candidate system hosting the new type of the linked nodal structure.

Acoustic phonon is a classic example of triple degeneracy point in band structure. This triple point always appears in phonon spectrum because of the Nambu–Goldstone theorem. When two identical two-dimensional (2D) periodic lattices are stacked in parallel after rotating one layer by a certain angle relative to the other layer, the resulting bilayer system can lose lattice periodicity completely and become a 2D quasicrystal. Twisted bilayer graphene with 30-degree rotation is a representative example. We show that such quasicrystalline bilayer systems generally develop macroscopically degenerate localized zero-energy states (ZESs) in strong coupling limit where the interlayer couplings are overwhelmingly larger than the intralayer couplings. The emergent chiral symmetry in strong coupling limit and aperiodicity of bilayer quasicrystals guarantee the existence of the ZESs. The macroscopically degenerate ZESs are analogous to the flat bands of periodic systems, in that both are composed of localized eigenstates, which give divergent density of states. For monolayers, we consider the triangular, square, and honeycomb lattices, comprised of homogenous tiling of three possible planar regular polygons: the equilateral triangle, square, and regular hexagon. We construct a compact theoretical framework, which we call the quasiband model, that describes the low energy properties of bilayer quasicrystals and counts the number of ZESs using a subset of Bloch states of monolayers. We also propose a simple geometric scheme in real space which can show the spatial localization of ZESs and count their number. In this work, we develop a systematic method of constructing flat-band models with and without band crossings. Our construction scheme utilizes the symmetry and spatial shape of a compact localized state (CLS) and also the singularity of the flat-band wave function obtained by a Fourier transform of the CLS (FT-CLS). In order to construct a flat-band model systematically using these ingredients, we first choose a CLS with a specific symmetry representation in a given lattice. Then, the singularity of FT-CLS indicates whether the resulting flat band exhibits a band crossing point or not. A tight-binding Hamiltonian with the flat band corresponding to the FT-CLS is obtained by introducing a set of basis molecular orbitals, which are orthogonal to the FT-CLS. Flat bands have band crossing points with other dispersive bands in many systems including the canonical flat band models in the Lieb and kagome lattices. Here we show that some of such band degeneracy points are unavoidable because of the symmetry representation (SR) of the flat band under unitary symmetry. We refer to such a band degeneracy point of flat bands as a SR-enforced band crossing. SR-enforced band crossing is distinct from the conventional band degeneracy protected by symmetry eigenvalues or topological charges in that its protection requires both specific symmetry representation and band flatness of the flat band, simultaneously. Even $n$-fold rotation $C_n$ ($n=2,3,4,6$) symmetry, which cannot protect band degeneracy without additional symmetries due to its abelian nature, can protect SR-enforced band crossings in flat band systems. In two-dimensional flat band systems with $C_n$ symmetry, when the degeneracy of a SR-enforced band crossing is lifted by a $C_n$ symmetry-preserving perturbation, we obtain a nearly flat Chern band. We review recent progresses in the study of flat band systems, especially focusing on the fundamental physics related to the singularity of the flat band's Bloch wave functions. We first explain that the flat bands can be classified into two classes: singular and nonsingular flat bands, based on the presence or absence of the singularity in the flat band's Bloch wave functions. The singularity is generated by the band crossing of the flat band with another dispersive band. In the singular flat band, one can find special kind of eigenmodes, called the non-contractible loop states and the robust boundary modes, which exhibit nontrivial real space topology. Then, we review the experimental realization of these topological eigenmodes of the flat band in the photonic lattices. While the singularity of the flat band is topologically trivial, we show that the maximum quantum distance around the singularity is a bulk invariant representing the strength of the singularity which protects the robust boundary modes. Finally, we discuss how the maximum quantum distance or the strength of the singularity manifests itself in the anomalous Landau level spreading of the singular flat band when it has a quadratic band-crossing with another band., 43 pages, 7 figures

We study the superconductivity of spin-polarized electrons in centrosymmetric ferromagnetic metals. Due to the spin-polarization and the Fermi statistics of electrons, the superconducting pairing function naturally has odd parity. According to the parity formula proposed by Fu, Berg, and Sato, odd-parity pairing leads to conventional first-order topological superconductivity when a normal metal has an odd number of Fermi surfaces. Here, we derive generalized parity formulae for the topological invariants characterizing higher-order topology of centrosymmetric superconductors. Based on the formulae, we systematically classify all possible band structures of ferromagnetic metals that can induce inversion-protected higher-order topological superconductivity. Among them, doped ferromagnetic nodal semimetals are identified as the most promising normal state platform for higher-order topological superconductivity. In two dimensions, we show that odd-parity pairing of doped Dirac semimetals induces a second-order topological superconductor. In three dimensions, odd-parity pairing of doped nodal line semimetals generates a nodal line topological superconductor with monopole charges. On the other hand, odd-parity pairing of doped monopole nodal line semimetals induces a three-dimensional third-order topological superconductor. We theoretically study the intrinsic thermal Hall and spin Nernst effect in collinear ferrimagnets on a honeycomb lattice with broken inversion symmetry. The broken inversion symmetry allows in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the nearest neighbors, which does not affect the magnon spectrum in the linear spin wave theory. However, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can induce large Berry curvature in the magnetoelastic excitation spectrum through the magnon-phonon interaction to produce thermal Hall current. Furthermore, we find that the magnetoelastic excitations transport spin, which is inherited from the magnon bands. Therefore, the thermal Hall current is accompanied by spin Nernst current. Because the magnon-phonon interaction does not conserve the spin, we also study the spin density induced by thermal gradient in the presence of magnon-phonon interaction. We find that the intrinsic part of the spin density shows no asymmetric spin accumulation near the boundary of the system having a stripe geometry. However, because of the magnon-phonon interaction, we find nonzero total spin density in the system having armchair edges. The extrinsic part of the spin density, on the other hand, shows asymmetric spin accumulation near the boundary for both armchair and zigzag edges because of the magnon-phonon interaction. Spin Hall effect is the transverse flow of the electron spin in conductors under external electric field. Similarly, thermal gradient in magnetic insulators can drive a transverse flow of the spin angular momentum of magnons, which provides a thermal alternative for spin manipulation. Recently, the phonon angular momentum (PAM), which is the angular momentum of atoms as a result of their orbital motion around their equilibrium positions, has garnered attention as a quantity analogous to the magnon spin. However, can we manipulate PAM like magnon spin? Here, we show that temperature gradient generally induces a transverse flow of PAM, which we term the phonon angular momentum Hall effect (PAMHE). The PAMHE relies only on the presence of transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, and it is therefore ubiquitous in condensed matter systems. As a consequence of the PAMHE, PAM accumulates at the edges of a crystal. When the atoms in the crystal carry nonzero Born effective charge, the edge PAM induces edge magnetization, which may be observed through optical measurement. Based on first-principles calculations and tight-binding model analysis, we propose monolayer graphdiyne as a candidate material for a two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator protected by inversion symmetry. Despite the absence of chiral symmetry, the higher-order topology of monolayer graphdiyne is manifested in the filling anomaly and charge accumulation at two corners. Although its low energy band structure can be properly described by the tight-binding Hamiltonian constructed by using only the $p_z$ orbital of each atom, the corresponding bulk band topology is trivial. The nontrivial bulk topology can be correctly captured only when the contribution from the core levels derived from $p_{x,y}$ and $s$ orbitals are included, which is further confirmed by the Wilson loop calculations. We also show that the higher-order band topology of a monolayer graphdyine gives rise to the nontrivial band topology of the corresponding three-dimensional material, ABC-stacked graphdiyne, which hosts monopole nodal lines and hinge states., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, new title

In topological semimetals and nodal superconductors, band crossings between occupied and unoccupied bands form stable nodal points/lines/surfaces carrying quantized topological charges. In particular, in centrosymmetric systems, some nodal structures at the Fermi energy $E_F$ carry two distinct topological charges, and thus they are called doubly charged nodes. Here we show that doubly charged nodal surfaces of centrosymmetric superconductors in three-dimensions always develop peculiar linking structures with nodal points or lines formed between occupied bands below $E_F$. Such linking structures can naturally explain the inherent relationship between the charge of the node below $E_F$ and the two charges of the nodal surfaces at $E_F$. Based on the Altland-Zirnbauer (AZ)-type ten-fold classification of nodes with additional inversion $\mathcal{I}$ symmetry, which is called the AZ$+\mathcal{I}$ classification, we provide the complete list of linking structures of doubly charged nodes in centrosymmetric systems. The linking structures of doubly charged nodes clearly demonstrate that not only the local band structure around the node but also the global band structure play a critical role in characterizing gapless topological phases., Comment: 16 pages, 3+5 figures

We propose a route to achieve odd-parity spin-triplet (OPST) superconductivity in metallic collinear antiferromagnets with inversion symmetry. Owing to the existence of hidden antiunitary symmetry, which we call the effective time-reversal symmetry (eTRS), the Fermi surfaces of ordinary antiferromagnetic metals are generally spin degenerate, and spin-singlet pairing is favored. However, by introducing a local inversion symmetry breaking perturbation that also breaks the eTRS, we can lift the degeneracy to obtain spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. In the weak-coupling limit, the spin-polarized Fermi surfaces constrain the electrons to form spin-triplet Cooper pairs with odd parity. Interestingly, all the odd-parity superconducting ground states we obtained host nontrivial band topologies manifested as chiral topological superconductors, second-order topological superconductors, and nodal superconductors. We propose that double perovskite oxides with collinear antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic ordering, such as ${\mathrm{SrLaVMoO}}_{6}$, are promising candidate systems where our theoretical ideas can be applied to.

We demonstrate robust-boundary-mode (RBM) and non-contractible loop state (NLS) in a photonic Kagome lattice, manifesting unique topological entities in flatband systems. We achieve direct observation of the NLS along toroidal direction in a Corbino- geometry.

Topological superconductors are exotic gapped phases of matter hosting Majorana mid-gap states on their boundary. In conventional topological superconductors, Majorana in-gap states appear in the form of either localized zero-dimensional modes or propagating spin-1/2 fermions with a quasi-relativistic dispersion relation. Here we show that unconventional propagating Majorana states can emerge on the surface of three-dimensional topological superconductors protected by rotational symmetry. The unconventional Majorana surface states fall into three different categories: a spin-$S$ Majorana fermion with $(2S+1)$-fold degeneracy $(S\geq3/2)$, a Majorana Fermi line carrying two distinct topological charges, and a quartet of spin-1/2 Majorana fermions related by fourfold rotational symmetry. The spectral properties of the first two kinds, which go beyond the conventional spin-1/2 fermions, are unique to topological superconductors and have no counterpart in topological insulators. We show that the unconventional Majorana surface states can be obtained in the superconducting phase of doped $Z_2$ topological insulators or Dirac semimetals with rotational symmetry., Comment: 6+15 pages, 4+3 figures

Recent advances in thin film technologies enable us to engineer structural details of surface and interface in transition metal oxide films, and provide numerous valuable opportunities to manipulate electric and magnetic properties via strong couplings among charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. In this work, we exploit an optical second harmonic generation technique to determine crystalline symmetries of surface and interface of compressively strained SrRuO3 thin films, which have been widely used as one of representative ferromagnetic metals in oxide devices. We reveal that the structural symmetries of the surface, the inner-bulk part, and the interface of the films are given distinctly owing to the compressive strain and its relaxation. Furthermore, we trace evolutions of the surface/interface structural symmetries with variations of temperature and film thickness, and discuss their similarities and differences compared to the bulk crystal. The structural phase diagram presented here will provide fundamental information of the surface and interface structural symmetry in exploring electronic and magnetic phenomena emerging in relevant oxide heterostructures.

Magnetism and spin–orbit coupling are two quintessential ingredients underlying topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by spin–orbit coupling, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature, leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. However, two-dimensional systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that two-dimensional spin-polarized band structures of perovskite oxides generally support symmetry-protected nodal lines and points that govern both the sign and the magnitude of the anomalous Hall effect. To demonstrate this, we performed angle-resolved photoemission studies of ultrathin films of SrRuO3, a representative metallic ferromagnet with spin–orbit coupling. We show that the sign-changing anomalous Hall effect upon variation in the film thickness, magnetization and chemical potential can be well explained by theoretical models. Our work may facilitate new switchable devices based on ferromagnetic ultrathin films. The topological nature of the electronic structure of two-dimensional ferromagnetic SrRuO3 and its relationship to the anomalous Hall effect is explored through transport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical modelling.

Topological properties of lattices are typically revealed in momentum space using concepts such as the Chern number. Here, we study unconventional loop states, namely, the noncontractible loop states (NLSs) and robust boundary modes, mediated by nontrivial topology in real space. While such states play a key role in understanding fundamental physics of flatband systems, their experimental observation has been hampered because of the challenge in realizing desired boundary conditions. Using a laser-writing technique, we optically establish photonic kagome lattices with both an open boundary by properly truncating the lattice, and a periodic boundary by shaping the lattice into a Corbino geometry. We thereby demonstrate the robust boundary modes winding around the entire edge of the open lattice and, more directly, the NLSs winding in a closed loop akin to that in a torus. We prove that the NLSs due to real-space topology persist in ideal Corbino-shaped kagome lattices of arbitrary size. Our results could be of great importance for our understanding of the singular flatbands and the intriguing physics phenomenon applicable for strongly interacting systems.

We study the homotopy classification of symmetry representations to describe the bulk topological invariants protected by the combined operation of a twofold rotation ${C}_{2z}$ and time-reversal $T$ symmetries. We define topological invariants as obstructions to having smooth Bloch wave functions compatible with a momentum-independent symmetry representation. When the Bloch wave functions are required to be smooth, the information on the band topology is contained in the symmetry representation. This implies that the $d$-dimensional homotopy class of the unitary matrix representation of the symmetry operator corresponds to the $d$-dimensional topological invariants. Here, we prove that the second Stiefel-Whitney number, a two-dimensional (2D) topological invariant protected by ${C}_{2z}T$, is the homotopy invariant that characterizes the second homotopy class of the matrix representation of ${C}_{2z}T$. As an application of our result, we show that the three-dimensional (3D) bulk topological invariant for the ${C}_{2z}T$-protected topological crystalline insulator proposed by C. Fang and L. Fu in Phys. Rev. B 91, 161105 (2015), which we call the 3D strong Stiefel-Whitney insulator, is identical to the quantized magnetoelectric polarizability. The bulk-boundary correspondence associated with the quantized magnetoelectric polarizability shows that the 3D strong Stiefel-Whitney insulator has chiral hinge states as well as 2D massless surface Dirac fermions. This shows that the 3D strong Stiefel-Whitney insulator has the characteristics of both the first- and the second-order topological insulators, simultaneously, which is in consistence with the recent classification of higher-order topological insulators protected by an order-two symmetry.

We study the topological property of the magnetoelastic excitation in non-collinear antiferromagnets. As a toy model, we consider the magnon-phonon coupling in a triangular antiferromagnet with a $120^\circ$ N\`eel order. We find that in the presence of out-of-plane external magnetic field, the magnon-polaron bands, which arise from hybridization of magnons and phonons, can carry Chern number, even though the individual magnon and phonon bands are topologically trivial. Large Berry curvature is induced from the anti-crossing regions between the magnon and phonon bands, which renormalizes the thermal Hall conductivity of phonon bands. To compute the Berry curvature and Chern number of magnon-polarons, we give a simple algorithm to diagonalize magnetoelastic Hamiltonian without diagonalizing the phonon Hamiltonian, by mapping the problem to the diagonalization of bosonic Bogoliubov-de-Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian. This is necessary because the contribution to the Berry curvature from phonon cannot be properly captured if we compute the Berry curvature from magnetoelastic Hamiltonian whose phonon sector has been already diagonalized., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we propose that a transition-metal rutile oxide, in particular ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{PtO}}_{2}$, can host a three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal phase. We find that ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{PtO}}_{2}$ possesses an inner nodal chain structure when spin-orbit coupling is neglected. Incorporating spin-orbit coupling gaps the nodal chain while preserving a single pair of three-dimensional Dirac points protected by a screw rotation symmetry. These Dirac points are created by a band inversion of two $d$ bands, which is a realization of a Dirac semimetal phase in a correlated electron system. Moreover, a mirror plane in the momentum space carries a nontrivial mirror Chern number ${n}_{M}=\ensuremath{-}2$, which distinguishes ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{PtO}}_{2}$ from the Dirac semimetals known so far, such as ${\mathrm{Na}}_{3}\mathrm{Bi}$ and ${\mathrm{Cd}}_{3}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$. If we apply a perturbation that breaks the rotation symmetry and preserves the mirror symmetry, the Dirac points are gapped, and the system becomes a topological crystalline insulator.

We show that flat bands can be categorized into two distinct classes, that is, singular and nonsingular flat bands, by exploiting the singular behavior of their Bloch wave functions in momentum space. In the case of a singular flat band, its Bloch wave function possesses immovable discontinuities generated by the band-crossing with other bands, and thus the vector bundle associated with the flat band cannot be defined. This singularity precludes the compact localized states from forming a complete set spanning the flat band. Once the degeneracy at the band crossing point is lifted, the singular flat band becomes dispersive and can acquire a finite Chern number in general, suggesting a new route for obtaining a nearly flat Chern band. On the other hand, the Bloch wave function of a nonsingular flat band has no singularity, and thus forms a vector bundle. A nonsingular flat band can be completely isolated from other bands while preserving the perfect flatness. All one-dimensional flat bands belong to the nonsingular class. We show that a singular flat band displays a novel bulk-boundary correspondence such that the presence of the robust boundary mode is guaranteed by the singularity of the Bloch wave function. Moreover, we develop a general scheme to construct a flat band model Hamiltonian in which one can freely design its singular or nonsingular nature. Finally, we propose a general formula for the compact localized state spanning the flat band, which can be easily implemented in numerics and offer a basis set useful in analyzing correlation effects in flat bands., 23 pages, 13 figures

We study the bulk and boundary properties of fragile topological insulators (TIs) protected by inversion symmetry, mostly focusing on the class A of the Altland-Zirnbauer classification. First, we propose an efficient method for diagnosing fragile band topology by using the symmetry data in momentum space. Using this method, we show that among all the possible parity configurations of inversion-symmetric insulators, at least 17 percent of them have fragile topology in 2D while fragile TIs are less than 3 percent in 3D. Second, we study the bulk-boundary correspondence of fragile TIs protected by inversion symmetry. In particular, we generalize the notion of $d$-dimensional ($d$D) $k$th-order TIs, which is normally defined for $0d$, and show that they all have fragile topology. In terms of the Dirac Hamiltonian, a $d$D $k$th-order TI has $(k-1)$ boundary mass terms. We show that a minimal fragile TI with the filling anomaly can be considered as the $d$D $(d+1)$th-order TI, and all the other $d$D $k$th-order TIs with $k>(d+1)$ can be constructed by stacking $d$D $(d+1)$th-order TIs. Although $d$D $(d+1)$th-order TIs have no in-gap states, the boundary mass terms carry an odd winding number along the boundary, which induces localized charges on the boundary at the positions where the boundary mass terms change abruptly. In the cases with $k>(d+1)$, we show that the net parity of the system with boundaries can distinguish topological insulators and trivial insulators. Also, by studying the (nested) Wilson loop spectra, we determine the minimal number of bands to resolve the Wannier obstruction, which is consistent with the prediction from our diagnosis method of fragile topology. Finally, we show that a $(d+1)$D $(k-1)$th-order TI can be obtained by an adiabatic pumping of $d$D $k$th-order TI, which generalizes the previous study of the 2D 3rd-order TI., Comment: 43 pages, 19 figures, published version

We establish the correspondence between the fractional charge bound to a vortex in a textured lattice and the relevant bulk band topology in two-dimensional (2D) topological crystalline insulators. As a representative example, we consider the Kekule textured graphene whose bulk band topology is characterized by a 2D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological invariant $\nu_{\rm 2D}$ protected by inversion symmetry. The fractional charge localized at a vortex in the Kekule texture is shown to be related to the change in the bulk topological invariant $\nu_{\rm 2D}$ around the vortex, as in the case of the Su-Schriefer-Heeger model in which the fractional charge localized at a domain wall is related to the change in the bulk charge polarization between degenerate ground states. We show that the effective three-dimensional (3D) Hamiltonian, where the angle $\theta$ around a vortex in Kekule-textured graphene is a third coordinate, describes a 3D axion insulator with a quantized magnetoelectric polarization. The spectral flow during the adiabatic variation of $\theta$ corresponds to the chiral hinge modes of an axion insulator and determines the accumulated charge localized at the vortex, which is half-quantized when chiral symmetry exists. When chiral symmetry is absent, electric charge localized at the vortex is no longer quantized, but the vortex always carries a half-quantized Wannier charge as long as inversion symmetry exists. In previous studies, the topological invariants of 1D non-Hermitian systems have been defined in open boundary condition (OBC) to satisfy the bulk-boundary correspondence. The extreme sensitivity of bulk energy spectra to boundary conditions has been attributed to the breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence based on the topological invariants defined under periodic boundary condition (PBC). Here we propose non-Hermitian many-body polarization as a topological invariant for 1D non-Hermitian systems defined in PBC, which satisfies the bulk-boundary correspondence. Employing many-body methodology in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for fermions, we show the absence of non-Hermitian skin effect due to the Pauli exclusion principle and demonstrate the bulk-boundary correspondence using the invariant defined under PBC. Moreover, we show that the bulk topological invariant is quantized in the presence of chiral or generalized inversion symmetry. Our study suggests the existence of generalized crystalline symmetries in non-Hermitian systems, which give quantized topological invariants that capture the symmetry-protected topology of non-Hermitian systems., Comment: 6+3 pages, 4+3 figures

Correlated topological phases (CTPs) with interplay between topology and electronic correlations have attracted tremendous interest in condensed matter physics. Therein, correlated Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are rare in nature and, thus, have so far been less investigated experimentally. In particular, the experimental realization of the interacting WSM state with logarithmic Fermi velocity renormalization has not been achieved yet. Here, experimental evidence of a correlated magnetic WSM state with logarithmic renormalization in strained pyrochlore iridate Pr2 Ir2 O7 (PIO) which is a paramagnetic Luttinger semimetal in bulk, is reported. Benefitting from epitaxial strain, "bulk-absent" all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic ordering can be stabilized in PIO film, which breaks time-reversal symmetry and leads to a magnetic WSM state. With further analysis of the experimental data and renormalization group calculations, an interacting Weyl liquid state with logarithmically renormalized Fermi velocity, similar to that in graphene, is found, dressed by long-range Coulomb interactions. This work highlights the interplay of strain, magnetism, and topology with electronic correlations, and paves the way for strain-engineering of CTPs in pyrochlore iridates.

$1H$-phase monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides have spin-split electronic band structures near the $K({K}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ point due to strong spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking. In the case of the monolayer ${\mathrm{Mo}X}_{2}$ ($X=\text{S}$, Se, Te), the spin-split conduction bands cross near the $K({K}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ point. We show that the band crossing occurs not only along the high-symmetry directions, but also along arbitrary directions due to a mirror reflection symmetry of the monolayer. As a result, $n$-doped monolayer ${\mathrm{Mo}X}_{2}$ is a two-dimensional type-II nodal-line material.

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of anomalous magneto-transport properties near the Mott quantum critical point (QCP) of pyrochlore iridates, we study the generic topological band structure near QCP in the presence of magnetic field. We have found that the competition between different energy scales can generate various topological semi-metal phases near QCP. Here the central role is played by the presence of a quadratic band crossing (QBC) with four-fold degeneracy in the paramagnetic band structure. Due to the large band degeneracy and strong spin-orbit coupling, the degenerate states at QBC can show an anisotropic Zeeman effect as well as the conventional isotropic Zeeman effect. Through the competition between three different magnetic energy scales including the exchange energy between Ir electrons and two Zeeman energies, various topological semimetals can be generated near QCP. Moreover, we have shown that these three magnetic energy scales can be controlled by modulating the magnetic multipole moment (MMM) of the cluster of spins in a unit cell, which can couple to the intrinsic MMM of the degenerate states at QBC. We propose the general topological band structure under magnetic field achievable near QCP, which would facilitate the experimental discovery of novel topological semimetal states in pyrochlore iridates., 22 pages, 18 figures

Ferroic domain walls (DWs) create different symmetries and ordered states compared with those in single-domain bulk materials. In particular, the DWs of an antiferromagnet with noncoplanar spin structure have a distinct symmetry that cannot be realized in those of their ferromagnet counterparts. In this paper, we show that an unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) can arise from the DWs of a noncoplanar antiferromagnet, $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{d}}_{2}\mathrm{I}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$. Bulk $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{d}}_{2}\mathrm{I}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ has a cubic symmetry; thus, its Hall signal should be zero without an applied magnetic field. The DWs generated in this material break the twofold rotational symmetry, which allows for finite anomalous Hall conductivity. A strong $f\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ exchange interaction between the Nd and Ir magnetic moments significantly influences antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain switching. Our epitaxial $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{d}}_{2}\mathrm{I}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ thin film showed a large enhancement of the AHE signal when the AFM domains switched, indicating that the AHE is mainly due to DWs. Our paper highlights the symmetry-broken interface of AFM materials as a means of exploring topological effects and their relevant applications.

Interplay of Fermi surface topology and electron correlation is the quintessential ingredient underlying spontaneous symmetry breaking in itinerant electronic systems. In one-dimensional (1D) systems at half-filling, the inherent Fermi surface nesting makes the translationally invariant metallic state unstable, which is known as Peierls instability. Extending the scope of Peierls instability to two (2D) or three dimensions (3D), however, is not straightforward, since the Fermi surface in higher dimensions is generally not nested. In this work, we show that a perfectly nested Fermi surface can be realized in a class of 2D perovskite oxides, giving rise to 2D Peierls instability. Here the central role is played by the zone boundary Dirac line node (DLN) protected by two orthogonal glide mirrors induced by the rotation of oxygen octahedra. Especially, at a critical angle of the octahedron rotation, the zone-boundary DLN flattens, leading to logarithmically diverging susceptibility. We propose the 2D Peierls instability driven by dispersionless DLN as a principle mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking in various layered perovskite oxides including the antiferromagnetism of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. As a clear signature of the 2D Peierls instability, we predict that the magnetic domain wall in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ hosts localized soliton modes., 26+31 pages, 6+8 figures

We study the band topology and the associated linking structure of topological semimetals with nodal lines carrying $Z_{2}$ monopole charges, which can be realized in three-dimensional systems invariant under the combination of inversion $P$ and time reversal $T$ when spin-orbit coupling is negligible. In contrast to the well-known $PT$-symmetric nodal lines protected only by $\pi$ Berry phase in which a single nodal line can exist, the nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges should always exist in pairs. We show that a pair of nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges is created by a {\it double band inversion} (DBI) process, and that the resulting nodal lines are always {\it linked by another nodal line} formed between the two topmost occupied bands. It is shown that both the linking structure and the $Z_{2}$ monopole charge are the manifestation of the nontrivial band topology characterized by the {\it second Stiefel-Whitney class}, which can be read off from the Wilson loop spectrum. We show that the second Stiefel-Whitney class can serve as a well-defined topological invariant of a $PT$-invariant two-dimensional (2D) insulator in the absence of Berry phase. Based on this, we propose that pair creation and annihilation of nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges can mediate a topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a three-dimensional weak Stiefel-Whitney insulator (3D weak SWI). Moreover, using first-principles calculations, we predict ABC-stacked graphdiyne as a nodal line semimetal (NLSM) with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges having the linking structure. Finally, we develop a formula for computing the second Stiefel-Whitney class based on parity eigenvalues at inversion invariant momenta, which is used to prove the quantized bulk magnetoelectric response of NLSMs with $Z_2$ monopole charges under a $T$-breaking perturbation., Comment: 4+28 pages, 3+17 figures

We show that the Wannier obstruction and the fragile topology of the nearly flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene at magic angle are manifestations of the nontrivial topology of two-dimensional real wave functions characterized by the Euler class. To prove this, we examine the generic band topology of two dimensional real fermions in systems with space-time inversion $I_{ST}$ symmetry. The Euler class is an integer topological invariant classifying real two band systems. We show that a two-band system with a nonzero Euler class cannot have an $I_{ST}$-symmetric Wannier representation. Moreover, a two-band system with the Euler class $e_{2}$ has band crossing points whose total winding number is equal to $-2e_2$. Thus the conventional Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem fails in systems with a nonzero Euler class. We propose that the topological phase transition between two insulators carrying distinct Euler classes can be described in terms of the pair creation and annihilation of vortices accompanied by winding number changes across Dirac strings. When the number of bands is bigger than two, there is a $Z_{2}$ topological invariant classifying the band topology, that is, the second Stiefel Whitney class ($w_2$). Two bands with an even (odd) Euler class turn into a system with $w_2=0$ ($w_2=1$) when additional trivial bands are added. Although the nontrivial second Stiefel-Whitney class remains robust against adding trivial bands, it does not impose a Wannier obstruction when the number of bands is bigger than two. However, when the resulting multi-band system with the nontrivial second Stiefel-Whitney class is supplemented by additional chiral symmetry, a nontrivial second-order topology and the associated corner charges are guaranteed., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures

We report the realization of novel symmetry-protected Dirac fermions in a surface-doped two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, black phosphorus. The widely tunable band gap of black phosphorus by the surface Stark effect is employed to achieve a surprisingly large band inversion up to ∼0.6 eV. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra directly reveal the pair creation of Dirac points and their movement along the axis of the glide-mirror symmetry. Unlike graphene, the Dirac point of black phosphorus is stable, as protected by space-time inversion symmetry, even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Our results establish black phosphorus in the inverted regime as a simple model system of 2D symmetry-protected (topological) Dirac semimetals, offering an unprecedented opportunity for the discovery of 2D Weyl semimetals.

Topological semimetals host electronic structures with several band-contact points or lines and are generally expected to exhibit strong topological responses. Up to now, most work has been limited to non-magnetic materials and the interplay between topology and magnetism in this class of quantum materials has been largely unexplored. Here we utilize theoretical calculations, magnetotransport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to propose Fe3GeTe2, a van der Waals material, as a candidate ferromagnetic (FM) nodal line semimetal. We find that the spin degree of freedom is fully quenched by the large FM polarization, but the line degeneracy is protected by crystalline symmetries that connect two orbitals in adjacent layers. This orbital-driven nodal line is tunable by spin orientation due to spin-orbit coupling and produces a large Berry curvature, which leads to a large anomalous Hall current, angle and factor. These results demonstrate that FM topological semimetals hold significant potential for spin- and orbital-dependent electronic functionalities.

The interplay between electron correlation and spin–orbit coupling in solids has been proven to be an abundant gold mine for emergent topological phases. Here we report the results of systematic magnetotransport study on bandwidth-controlled pyrochlore iridates R2Ir2O7 near quantum metal-insulator transition (MIT). The application of a magnetic field along [001] crystallographic direction (H//[001]) significantly decreases resistivity while producing a unique Hall response, which indicates the emergence of the novel semi-metallic state in the course of the magnetic transformation from all-in all-out (AIAO, 4/0) to 2-in 2-out (2/2) spin configuration. For H//[111] that favours 3-in 1-out (3/1) configuration, by contrast, the resistivity exhibits saturation at a relatively high value typical of a semimetal. The observed properties can be identified to reflect the emergence of multiple Weyl semimetal states with varying numbers of Weyl points and line nodes in respective spin configurations. With tuning effective bandwidth, all these states appear to concentrate around the quantum MIT region, which may open a promising venue for topological phenomena and functions., The interplay between multiple electronic interactions in solid promotes the emergence of exotic phases.
