After over three decades of unsuccessful attempts, we report the first detection of molecular gas emission in Malin 1, the largest spiral galaxy observed to date, and one of the most iconic giant low surface brightness galaxies. Using ALMA, we detect significant $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) emission in the galaxy's central region and tentatively identify CO emission across three regions on the disc. These observations allow for a better estimate of the H$_2$ mass and molecular gas mass surface density, both of which are remarkably low given the galaxy's scale. By integrating data on its HI mass, we derive a very low molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio. Overall, our results highlight the minimal presence of molecular gas in Malin 1, contrasting sharply with its extensive, homogeneous atomic gas reservoir. For the first time, we position Malin 1 on the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) diagram, where it falls below the main sequence for normal spirals, consistent with previous upper limits but now with more accurate figures. These findings are crucial for constraining our understanding of star formation processes in environments characterized by extremely low molecular gas densities and for refining models of galaxy formation, thereby improving predictions concerning the formation, evolution, and distribution of these giant, elusive galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. We present a catalog of clouds identified from the $^{12}$CO (1--0) data of M83, which was observed using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) with a spatial resolution of $\sim$46 pc and a mass sensitivity of $\sim$10$^4$ $M_{\odot}$ (3 $\sigma$). The almost full-disk coverage and high sensitivity of the data allowed us to sample 5724 molecular clouds with a median mass of $\sim1.9$ $\times$ $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$, which is comparable to the most frequently sampled mass of Giant Molecular Clouds by surveys in the Milky Way. About 60 percent of the total CO luminosity in M83's disk arises from clouds more massive than 10$^6$ $M_{\odot}$. Such massive clouds comprise 16 percent of the total clouds in number and tend to concentrate toward the arm, bar, and center, while smaller clouds are more prevalent in inter-arm regions. Most $>10^6$ $M_{\odot}$ clouds have peak brightness temperatures $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$ above 2 K with the current resolution. Comparing the observed cloud properties with the scaling relations determined by Solomon et al. 1987 (S87), $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$$>2$ K clouds follow the relations, but $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$$<2$ K clouds, which are dominant in number, deviate significantly. Without considering the effect of beam dilution, the deviations would suggest modestly high virial parameters and low surface mass densities for the entire cloud samples, which are similar to values found for the Milky Way clouds by Rice et al. (2016) and Miville-Desch{\^e}nes et al. (2017). However, once beam dilution is taken into account, the observed $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ and $\Sigma$ for a majority of the clouds (mostly $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$ $<2$ K) can be potentially explained with intrinsic $\Sigma$ of $\sim$100 $M_{\mathrm{\odot}}\ \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$ and $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ of $\sim$1, which are similar to the clouds of S87., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Science Fiction is using astronomy to offer to the public blockbusters at the movies (e.g. Interstellar), series or movies in streaming media (Don't Look Up, The Expanse), many books from classic authors (I. Asimov, A.C. Clarke) or more modern ones (K.S. Robinson), comics (the adventures of Valerian and Laureline), or video games (Mass Effect, No Man's sky) that have a very large cumulated audience. Astronomers can use Science Fiction to illustrate physics or astronomical facts. It might be a good way to talk about our work, our methods, by comparing them to examples with which a large audience is familiar. A few examples are provided in this contribution. In a recent study (Stanwey, 2022), it was shown that 93 percent of British professional astronomers have an interest for Science Fiction, and 69 percent consider that Science Fiction influenced their career or life choice. Aims. The central region of the Giant Low Surface Brightness galaxy Malin 1 has long been known to have a complex morphology with evidence of a bulge, disc, and potentially a bar hosting asymmetric star formation. In this work, we use VLT/MUSE data to resolve the central region of Malin 1 in order to determine its structure. Methods. We use careful light profile fitting in every image slice of the datacube to create wavelength-dependent models of each morphological component, from which we could cleanly extract their spectra. We then used the kinematics and emission line properties from these spectra to better understand the nature of each component extracted from our model fit. Results. We report the detection of a pair of distinct sources at the centre of this galaxy with a separation of ~1.05", which corresponds to a separation on sky of ~1.9 kpc. The radial velocity data of each object confirms that they both lie in the kinematic core of the galaxy, and analysis of the emission lines reveals that the central compact source is more consistent with being ionized by star formation and/or a LINER, while the off-centre compact source lies closer to the separation between star-forming galaxies and AGN. Conclusions. This evidence suggests that the centre of Malin 1 hosts either a bar with asymmetric star formation or two distinct components in which the off-centre compact source could either be a star-forming clump containing one or more star clusters that is in the process of falling into the core of the galaxy and which will eventually merge with the central NSC, or a clump of gas infalling into the centre of the galaxy from either outside or from the disc and triggering star formation there., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present high-fidelity CO(1-0) imaging of molecular gas across the full star-forming disk of M83, using ALMA's 12m, 7m, and TP arrays and the MIRIAD package. The data have a mass sensitivity and resolution of 10^4Msun and 40 pc. The full disk coverage shows that the characteristics of molecular gas change radially from the center to outer disk. The molecular gas distribution shows coherent large-scale structures in the inner part, including the central concentration, bar offset ridges, and prominent molecular spiral arms. In the outer disk, the spiral arms appear less spatially coherent, and even flocculent. Massive filamentary gas concentrations are abundant even in the interarm regions. Building up these structures in the interarm regions would require a very long time (~>100Myr). Instead, they must have formed within stellar spiral arms and been released into the interarm regions. For such structures to survive through the dynamical processes, the lifetimes of these structures and their constituent molecules and molecular clouds must be long (~>100Myr). These interarm structures host little or no star formation traced by Halpha. The new map also shows extended CO emission, which likely represents an ensemble of unresolved molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a CO(3-2) detection of 23 molecular clouds in the extended ultraviolet (XUV) disk of the spiral galaxy M83 with ALMA. The observed 1kpc^2 region is at about 1.24 times the optical radius (R25) of the disk, where CO(2-1) was previously not detected. The detection and non-detection, as well as the level of star formation (SF) activity in the region, can be explained consistently if the clouds have the mass distribution common among Galactic clouds, such as Orion A -- with star-forming dense clumps embedded in thick layers of bulk molecular gas, but in a low-metallicity regime where their outer layers are CO-deficient and CO-dark. The cloud and clump masses, estimated from CO(3-2), range from 8.2x10^2 to 2.3x10^4 Msun and from 2.7x10^2 to 7.5x10^3 Msun, respectively. The most massive clouds appear similar to Orion A in star formation activity as well as in mass, as expected if the cloud mass structure is universal. The overall low SF activity in the XUV disk could be due to the relative shortage of gas in the molecular phase. The clouds are distributed like chains up to 600 pc (or longer) in length, suggesting that the trigger of cloud formation is on large scales. The universal cloud mass structure also justifies the use of high-J CO transitions to trace the total gas mass of clouds, or galaxies, even in the high-z universe. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultracompact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

We present the concept of BlueMUSE, a blue-optimised, medium spectral resolution, panoramic integral field spectrograph based on the MUSE concept and proposed for the Very Large Telescope. With an optimised transmission down to 350 nm, a larger FoV (1.4 x 1.4 arcmin$^2$) and a higher spectral resolution compared to MUSE, BlueMUSE will open up a new range of galactic and extragalactic science cases allowed by its specific capabilities, beyond those possible with MUSE. For example a survey of massive stars in our galaxy and the Local Group will increase the known population of massive stars by a factor $>$100, to answer key questions about their evolution. Deep field observations with BlueMUSE will also significantly increase samples of Lyman-alpha emitters, spanning the era of Cosmic Noon. This will revolutionise the study of the distant Universe: allowing the intergalactic medium to be detected unambiguously in emission, enabling the study of the exchange of baryons between galaxies and their surroundings. By 2030, at a time when the focus of most of the new large facilities (ELT, JWST) will be on the infra-red, BlueMUSE will be a unique facility, outperforming any ELT instrument in the Blue/UV. We present new, spatially resolved, surface photometry in FUV and NUV from images obtained by the $\textit{Galaxy Evolution Explorer}$ (GALEX), and IRAC1 (3.6 $\mu$m) photometry from the $\textit{Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies}$ (S$^{4}$G) (Sheth et al. 2010). We analyze the radial surface brightness profiles $\mu_{FUV}$, $\mu_{NUV}$, and $\mu_{[3.6]}$, as well as the radial profiles of (FUV $-$ NUV), (NUV $-$ [3.6]), and (FUV $-$ [3.6]) colors in 1931 nearby galaxies (z $<$ 0.01). The analysis of the 3.6 $\mu$m surface brightness profiles also allows us to separate the bulge and disk components in a quasi-automatic way, and to compare their light and color distribution with those predicted by the chemo-spectrophotometric models for the evolution of galaxy disks of Boissier & Prantzos (2000). The exponential disk component is best isolated by setting an inner radial cutoff and an upper surface brightness limit in stellar mass surface density. The best-fitting models to the measured scale length and central surface brightness values yield distributions of spin and circular velocity within a factor of two to those obtained via direct kinematic measurements. We find that at a surface brightness fainter than $\mu_{[3.6]}=20.89$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, or below $3\times 10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$ kpc$^{-2}$ in stellar mass surface density, the average specific star formation rate for star forming and quiescent galaxies remains relatively flat with radius. However, a large fraction of GALEX Green Valley galaxies (defined in Bouquin et al. 2015) shows a radial decrease in specific star formation rate. This behavior suggests that an outside-in damping mechanism, possibly related to environmental effects, could be testimony of an early evolution of galaxies from the blue sequence of star forming galaxies towards the red sequence of quiescent galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 34 pages, 19 figures

We use deep optical photometry from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey [NGVS] to investigate the color-magnitude diagram for the galaxies inhabiting the core of this cluster. The sensitivity of the NGVS imaging allows us to continuously probe galaxy colors over a factor of $\sim 2 \times 10^5$ in luminosity, from brightest cluster galaxies to scales overlapping classical satellites of the Milky Way [$M_{g^{\prime}}$ $\sim$ $-$9; $M_{*}$ $\sim 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$], within a single environment. Remarkably, we find the first evidence that the RS flattens in all colors at the faint-magnitude end [starting between $-$14 $\le$ $M_{g^{\prime}}$ $\le$ $-$13, around $M_{*}$ $\sim 4 \times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$], with the slope decreasing to $\sim$60% or less of its value at brighter magnitudes. This could indicate that the stellar populations of faint dwarfs in Virgo's core share similar characteristics [e.g. constant mean age] over $\sim$3 mags in luminosity, suggesting that these galaxies were quenched coevally, likely via pre-processing in smaller hosts. We also compare our results to galaxy formation models, finding that the RS in model clusters have slopes at intermediate magnitudes that are too shallow, and in the case of semi-analytic models, do not reproduce the flattening seen at both extremes [bright/faint] of the Virgo RS. Deficiencies in the chemical evolution of model galaxies likely contribute to the model-data discrepancies at all masses, while overly efficient quenching may also be a factor at dwarf scales. Gas flows play a fundamental role in galaxy formation and evolution, providing the fuel for the star formation process. These mechanisms leave an imprint in the amount of heavy elements. Thus, the analysis of this metallicity signature provides additional constraint on the galaxy formation scenario. We aim to discriminate between four different galaxy formation models based on two accretion scenarios and two different star formation recipes. We address the impact of a bimodal accretion scenario and a strongly regulated star formation recipe. We present a new extension of the eGalICS model, which allows us to track the metal enrichment process. Our new chemodynamical model is applicable for situations ranging from metal-free primordial accretion to very enriched interstellar gas contents. We use this new tool to predict the metallicity evolution of both the stellar populations and gas phase. We also address the evolution of the gas metallicity with the star formation rate (SFR). We then focus on a sub-sample of Milky Way-like galaxies. We compare both the cosmic stellar mass assembly and the metal enrichment process of such galaxies with observations and detailed chemical evolution models. Our models, based on a strong star formation regulation, allow us to reproduce well the stellar mass to gas-phase metallicity relation observed in the local universe. However, we observe a systematic shift towards high masses. Our $Mstar-Zg-SFR relation is in good agreement with recent measurements: our best model predicts a clear dependence with the SFR. Both SFR and metal enrichment histories of our Milky Way-like galaxies are consistent with observational measurements and detailed chemical evolution models. We finally show that Milky Way progenitors start their evolution below the observed main sequence and progressively reach this observed relation at z = 0., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

The Star formation rate (SFR) is a crucial parameter to investigate galaxy evolution. At low redshift the cosmic SFR density declines smoothly, and massive active galaxies become passive, reducing their star formation activity. This implies that the bulk of the SFR density at low redshift is mainly driven by low mass objects. We investigate the properties of a sample of low luminosity Far-Infrared (FIR) sources selected at 250 microns from Pappalardo et al. (2015). We have collected data from Ultraviolet to FIR to perform a multi-wavelengths analysis. The main goal is to investigate the correlation between SFR, stellar mass, and dust mass for a galaxy population with a wide range in dust content and stellar mass, including the low mass regime that most probably dominates the SFR density at low z. We define a main sample of ~800 sources with full Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) coverage between 0.15 < lambda < 500 microns and an extended sample with ~5000 sources in which we remove the constraints on the Ultraviolet and Near-Infrared bands. We analyze both samples with two different SED fitting methods: MAGPHYS and CIGALE. In the SFR versus stellar mass plane our samples occupy a region included between local spirals and higher redshift star forming galaxies. The galaxies subsample with the higher masses (M* > 3e10 Msol) does not lie on the main sequence, but shows a small offset, as a consequence of the decreased star formation. Low mass galaxies (M* < 1e10 Msol) settle in the main sequence with SFR and stellar mass consistent with local spirals. Deep Herschel data allow the identification of a mixed galaxy population, with galaxies still in an assembly phase, or galaxies at the beginning of their passive evolution. We present a new and simple method to measure the instantaneous mass and radial growth rates of the stellar discs of spiral galaxies, based on their star formation rate surface density (SFRD) profiles. Under the hypothesis that discs are exponential with time-varying scalelengths, we derive a universal theoretical profile for the SFRD, with a linear dependence on two parameters: the specific mass growth rate $\nu_\textrm{M} \equiv \dot{M_\star}/M_\star$ and the specific radial growth rate $\nu_\textrm{R} \equiv \dot{R}_\star/R_\star$ of the disc. We test our theory on a sample of 35 nearby spiral galaxies, for which we derive a measurement of $\nu_\textrm{M}$ and $\nu_\textrm{R}$. 32/35 galaxies show the signature of ongoing inside-out growth ($\nu_\textrm{R} > 0$). The typical derived e-folding timescales for mass and radial growth in our sample are ~ 10 Gyr and ~ 30 Gyr, respectively, with some systematic uncertainties. More massive discs have a larger scatter in $\nu_\textrm{M}$ and $\nu_\textrm{R}$, biased towards a slower growth, both in mass and size. We find a linear relation between the two growth rates, indicating that our galaxy discs grow in size at ~ 0.35 times the rate at which they grow in mass; this ratio is largely unaffected by systematics. We report the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy (NGC6503-d1) during the Subaru extended ultraviolet (XUV) disk survey. It is a likely companion of the spiral galaxy NGC6503. The resolved images, in B, V, R, i, and Halpha, show an irregular appearance due to bright stars with underlying, smooth and unresolved stellar emission. It is classified as the transition type (dIrr/dSph). Its structural properties are similar to those of the dwarfs in the Local Group, with a V absolute magnitude ~ -10.5, half-light radius ~400 pc, and central surface brightness ~25.2. Despite the low stellar surface brightness environment, one HII region was detected, though its Halpha luminosity is low, indicating an absence of any appreciable O-stars at the current epoch. The presence of multiple stellar populations is indicated by the color-magnitude diagram of ~300 bright resolved stars and the total colors of the dwarf, with the majority of its total stellar mass ~4x10^6 Msun in an old stellar population., Comment: Published in ApJL (ApJ, 802, L24). 7 pages, 4 figures

We obtained GALEX FUV, NUV, and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6$\mu$m photometry for > 2000 galaxies, available for 90% of the S4G sample. We find a very tight "GALEX Blue Sequence (GBS)" in the (FUV-NUV) versus (NUV-[3.6]) color-color diagram which is populated by irregular and spiral galaxies, and is mainly driven by changes in the formation timescale ($\tau$) and a degeneracy between $\tau$ and dust reddening. The tightness of the GBS provides an unprecedented way of identifying star-forming galaxies and objects that are just evolving to (or from) what we call the "GALEX Green Valley (GGV)". At the red end of the GBS, at (NUV-[3.6]) > 5, we find a wider "GALEX Red Sequence (GRS)" mostly populated by E/S0 galaxies that has a perpendicular slope to that of the GBS and of the optical red sequence. We find no such dichotomy in terms of stellar mass (measured by $\rm{M}_{[3.6]}$), since both massive ($M_{\star} > 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) blue and red sequence galaxies are identified. The type that is proportionally more often found in the GGV are the S0-Sa's and most of these are located in high-density environments. In this paper we introduce the deepest and most extensive ultraviolet extragalactic source catalogs of the Virgo Cluster area to date. Archival and targeted GALEX imaging is compiled and combined to provide the deepest possible coverage over ~120 deg^2 in the NUV (lambda_eff=2316 angstroms) and ~40 deg^2 in the FUV (lambda_eff=1539 angstroms) between 180 deg <= R.A. <= 195 deg and 0 deg <= Decl. <= 20 deg. We measure the integrated photometry of 1770 extended UV sources of all galaxy types and use GALEX pipeline photometry for 1,230,855 point-like sources in the foreground, within, and behind the cluster. Extended source magnitudes are reliable to m_UV ~22, showing ~0.01 sigma difference from their asymptotic magnitudes. Point-like source magnitudes have a 1 sigma standard deviation within ~0.2 mag down to m_uv ~23. The point-like source catalog is cross-matched with large optical databases and surveys including the SDSS DR9 (> 1 million Virgo Cluster sources), the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS; >13 million Virgo Cluster sources), and the NED (~30,000 sources in the Virgo Cluster). We find 69% of the entire UV point-like source catalog has a unique optical counterpart, 11% of which are stars and 129 are Virgo cluster members neither in the VCC nor part of the bright CGCG galaxy catalog (i.e., m_pg < 14.5). These data are collected in four catalogs containing the UV extended sources, the UV point-like sources, and two catalogs each containing the most relevant optical parameters of UV-optically matched point-like sources for further studies from SDSS and NGVS. The baryonic mass-to-light ratio used to perform the photometry-to-mass conversion has a tremendous influence on the measurement of the baryonic content and distribution, as well as on the determination of the dark halo parameters. Since numerous clues hint at an inside-out formation process for galaxies, a radius-dependant mass-to-light ratio is needed to physically represent the radially varying stellar population. In this article, we use chemo-spectrophotometric galactic evolution (CSPE) models to determine the mass-to-light ratio for a wide range of masses and sizes in the scenario of an inside-out formation process by gas accretion. We apply our method on a SINGS subsample of ten spiral and dwarf galaxies for stellar bands covering from the UV to the MIR. The CSPE models prove to be a good tool to weight the different photometric bands in order to obtain consistent stellar discs' masses regardless of the spectral band used. On the other hand, we show that colour index vs. the mass-to-light ratio relation is an imperfect tool to assign masses to young stellar populations because of the degeneracy affecting mass-to-light ratio in all bands at low colour index. Resulting discs from our analysis are compatible with the maximum disc hypothesis provided that adequate bulge/disc decomposition is performed and correction for the presence of a bar is not neglected since it disturbs the internal disc kinematics. We present an investigation into the origins of a series of interlaced narrow filamentary stellar structures, loops and plumes in the vicinity of the Virgo Cluster, edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 4216 that were previously identified by the Blackbird Telescope. Using the deeper, higher-resolution and precisely calibrated optical CFHT/MegaCam images obtained as part of the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS), we confirm the previously identified features and identify a few additional structures. The NGVS data allowed us to make a physical study of these low-surface brightness features and investigate their origin. The likely progenitors of the structures were identified as either already catalogued VCC dwarfs or newly discovered satellites caught in the act of being destroyed. They have the same g-i color index and likely contain similar stellar populations. The alignment of three dwarfs along an apparently single stream is intriguing, and we cannot totally exclude that these are second-generation dwarf galaxies being born inside the filament from the debris of an original dwarf. The observed complex structures, including in particular a stream apparently emanating from a satellite of a satellite, point to a high rate of ongoing dwarf destruction/accretion in the region of the Virgo Cluster where NGC 4216 is located. We investigate the dwarf (M_B> -16) galaxies in the Virgo cluster in the radio, optical, and ultraviolet regimes. Of the 365 galaxies in this sample, 80 have been detected in HI by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. These detections include 12 early-type dwarfs which have HI and stellar masses similar to the cluster dwarf irregulars and BCDs. In this sample of 12, half have star-formation properties similar to late type dwarfs, while the other half are quiescent like typical early-type dwarfs. We also discuss three possible mechanisms for their evolution: that they are infalling field galaxies that have been or are currently being evolved by the cluster, that they are stripped objects whose gas is recycled, and that the observed HI has been recently reaccreted. Evolution by the cluster adequately explains the star-forming half of the sample, but the quiescent class of early-type dwarfs is most consistent with having recently reaccreted their gas., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

We present the analysis of the full bi-dimensional optical spectral cube of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5668, observed with the PPAK IFU at the Calar Alto observatory 3.5m telescope. We make use of broad-band imaging to provide further constraints on the evolutionary history of the galaxy. This dataset will allow us to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive the evolution of disks. We investigated the properties of 62 H II regions and concentric rings in NGC 5668 and derived maps in ionized-gas attenuation and chemical (oxygen) abundances. We find that, while inwards of r\,$\sim\,36",\sim$\,4.4kpc\,$\sim$\,0.36\,$(\frac {D_{25}}{2})$ the derived O/H ratio follows the radial gradient typical of spiral galaxies, the abundance gradient beyond r$\sim36"$ flattens out. The analysis of the multi-wavelength surface brightness profiles of NGC 5668 is performed by fitting these profiles with those predicted by chemo-spectrophotometric evolutionary models of galaxy disks. From this, we infer a spin and circular velocity of $\lambda$=0.053 and v$_{c}$=167\,km\,s$^{-1}$, respectively. The metallicity gradient and rotation curve predicted by this best-fitting galaxy model nicely match the values derived from the IFU observations, especially within r\,$\sim36\arcsec$. The same is true for the colors despite of some small offsets and a reddening in the bluest colors beyond that radius. On the other hand, deviations of some of these properties in the outer disk indicate that a secondary mechanism, possibly gas transfer induced by the presence of a young bar, must have played a role in shaping the recent chemical and star formation histories of NGC 5668., Comment: 44 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:astro-ph/0206495

Context: We study the peculiar interacting galaxy system of VCC1249/M49 located in the core of the Virgo B subcluster. Owing to a recent interaction between the dwarf galaxy VCC1249 and the halo gas of the gE M49, neutral hydrogen has been displaced from the interstellar medium of this dwarf into the Virgo ICM. Observations also reveal multiple compact star-forming regions that are embedded in this HI cloud, with a projected separation up to 13 kpc from VCC1249 in the northwest direction. Aims: Motivated by recent NUV imaging from GUViCS of the VCC1249/M49 system that shows significant ongoing/recent star formation in the compact regions, we aim to constrain the origin of these outlying HII regions with a multi-wavelength approach. Methods: Using deep optical (u, g, i, z) imaging from NGVS and new Halpha imaging obtained at the San Pedro Martir observatory together with Keck long-slit spectroscopy, we characterize the SFR, ages, and metallicity of VCC1249 and its outlying compact regions. Moreover, we analyze the color and luminosity profile of the galaxy to investigate its recent interaction with M49. Results: Our new observations indicate that VCC1249 underwent a recent interaction with M49 in which both ram-pressure stripping and tidal interaction occured. The joint action of the two mechanisms led to the removal of the HI gas from the ISM of VCC1249, while the gravitational tides triggered the stellar tail and counter-tail of VCC1249. Our SED analysis reveals that the star formation in this galaxy was truncated around 200 Myr ago and that the outlying HII regions were born in situ about 10 Myr ago out of pre-enriched gas removed from the dwarf galaxy. These observations also reveal that interactions between central and satellite galaxies similar to the one between VCC1249/M49 may be an effective way of dispersing metals into the halos of massive galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures; one co-author added

Using combinations of H\alpha, ultraviolet (UV), and infrared (IR) emission, we estimate the star formation rate (SFR) surface density, \Sigma_SFR, at 1 kpc resolution for 30 disk galaxies that are targets of the IRAM HERACLES CO survey. We present a new physically-motivated IR spectral energy distribution-based approach to account for possible contributions to 24\mum emission not associated with recent star formation. Considering a variety of "reference" SFRs from the literature, we revisit the calibration of the 24\mum term in hybrid (UV+IR or H\alpha+IR) tracers. We show that the overall calibration of this term remains uncertain at the factor of two level because of the lack of wide-field, robust reference SFR estimates. Within this uncertainty, published calibrations represent a reasonable starting point for 1 kpc-wide areas of star-forming disk galaxies but we re-derive and refine the calibration of the IR term in these tracers to match our resolution and approach to 24\mum emission. We compare a large suite of \Sigma_SFR estimates and find that above \Sigma_SFR \sim 10^-3 M_\odot yr^-1 kpc^-2 the systematic differences among tracers are less than a factor of two across two orders of magnitude dynamic range. We caution that methodology and data both become serious issues below this level. We report deep Subaru Halpha observations of the XUV disk of M83. These new observations enable the first complete census of very young stellar clusters over the entire XUV disk. Combining Subaru and GALEX data with a stellar population synthesis model, we find that (1) the standard, but stochastically-sampled, initial mass function (IMF) is preferred over the truncated IMF, because there are low mass stellar clusters (10^{2-3}Msun) that host massive O-type stars; that (2) the standard Salpeter IMF and a simple aging effect explain the counts of FUV-bright and Halpha-bright clusters with masses >10^3Msun; and that (3) the Halpha to FUV flux ratio over the XUV disk supports the standard IMF. The Subaru Prime Focus Camera (Suprime-Cam) covers a large area even outside the XUV disk -- far beyond the detection limit of the HI gas. This enables us to statistically separate the stellar clusters in the disk from background contamination. The new data, model, and previous spectroscopic studies provide overall consistent results with respect to the internal dust extinction (Av~0.1 mag) and low metallicity (~0.2Zsun) using the dust extinction curve of SMC., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. We attempt in this paper to check the consistency of the observed Stellar Mass Function (SMF), SFR functions and the cosmic star formation rate density with simple backward evolutionary models. Starting from observed SMF for star-forming galaxies, we use backwards models to predict the evolution of a number of quantities, such as the SFR function, the cosmic SFR density and the Velocity Function. The velocity being a parameter attached to a galaxy during its history (contrary to the stellar mass), this approach allows us to quantify the number density evolution of galaxies of a given velocity, e.g. of the Milky Way siblings. Observations suggest that the SMF of star forming galaxies is constant between redshift 0 and 1. In order to reproduce this result, we must quench star formation in a number of star forming galaxies. The SMF of these quenched galaxies is consistent with available data concerning the increase in the population of quiescent galaxies in the same redshift interval. The SMF of quiescent galaxies is then mainly determined by the distribution of active galaxies that must stop star formation, with a modest mass redistribution during mergers. The cosmic SFR density, and the evolution of the SFR functions are relatively well recovered, although they provide some clue for a small evolution of the SMF of star forming galaxies at the lowest redshifts. We thus consider that we have obtained in a simple way a relatively consistent picture of the evolution of galaxies at intermediate redshifts. We note that if this picture is correct, 50 percent of the Milky-Way sisters (galaxies with the same velocity as our Galaxy, i.e. 220 km/s) have quenched their star formation since redshift 1 (and an even larger fraction for larger velocities). We present recent results from several on-going studies: The first addresses the question of gas-density thresholds for star formation, as probed by the outer disks of normal nearby galaxies. The second concerns the observational evidence for the existence of gravitating non-luminous (GNL) galaxies, as predicted by most recent simulations of galaxy formation in Lambda-CDM cosmologies. We find that (1) If star formation is traced by far-ultraviolet light, then there is no evidence for a threshold to star formation at any gas density so far probed, and (2) there is no evidence for GNL galaxies gravitationally interacting with known optical systems based on the observations (a) that there are no ring galaxies without plausible optically visible intruders, (b) all peculiar galaxies in the Arp Atlas that are bodily distorted have nearby plausibly interacting companions, and (c) there are no convincingly distorted/peculiar galaxies within Karachentsev's sample of more than 1,000 apparently/optically isolated galaxies.

We have initiated a search for extended ultraviolet disk (XUV-disk) galaxies in the local universe. Herein, we compare GALEX UV and visible--NIR images of 189 nearby (D$<$40 Mpc) S0--Sm galaxies included in the GALEX Atlas of Nearby Galaxies and present the first catalogue of XUV-disk galaxies. We find that XUV-disk galaxies are surprisingly common but have varied relative (UV/optical) extent and morphology. Type~1 objects ($\ga$20% incidence) have structured, UV-bright/optically-faint emission features in the outer disk, beyond the traditional star formation threshold. Type~2 XUV-disk galaxies ($\sim$10% incidence) exhibit an exceptionally large, UV-bright/optically-low-surface-brightness (LSB) zone having blue $UV-K_s$ outside the effective extent of the inner, older stellar population, but not reaching extreme galactocentric distance. If the activity occuring in XUV-disks is episodic, a higher fraction of present-day spirals could be influenced by such outer disk star formation. Type~1 disks are associated with spirals of all types, whereas Type~2 XUV-disks are predominantly found in late-type spirals. Type~2 XUV-disks are forming stars quickly enough to double their [presently low] stellar mass in the next Gyr (assuming a constant SF rate). XUV-disk galaxies of both types are systematically more gas-rich than the general galaxy population. Minor external perturbation may stimulate XUV-disk incidence, at least for Type~1 objects. XUV-disks are the most actively evolving galaxies growing via inside-out disk formation in the current epoch, and may constitute a segment of the galaxy population experiencing significant, continued gas accretion from the intergalactic medium or neighboring objects., Comment: 83 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables. For a sample of 43 nearby, late-type galaxies, we have investigated the radial variation of both the current star formation rate and the dust-induced UV light attenuation. To do this we have cross-correlated IRAS images and GALEX observations for each of these galaxies, and compiled observations of the gas (CO and HI) and metal-abundance gradients found in the literature. We find that attenuation correlates with metallicity. We then use the UV profiles, corrected for attenuation, to study several variants of the Schmidt law and conclude that our results are compatible with a simple law similar to the one of Kennicutt but extending smoothly to lower surface densities, but with considerable scatter. We do not detect an abrupt break in the UV light at the threshold radius derived from H-alpha data (at which the H-alpha profile shows a break and beyond which only a few HII regions are usually found). We interpret the H-alpha sudden break not as a change in the star formation regime (as often suggested) but as the vanishingly small number of ionizing stars corresponding to low levels of star formation., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, accepted for the GALEX special issue of ApJS. We use GALEX/optical photometry to construct color-color relationships for early-type galaxies sorted by morphological type. We have matched objects in the GALEX GR1 public release and the first IR1.1 internal release, with the RC3 early-type galaxies having a morphological type -5.5

The recent star formation (SF) in the early-type spiral galaxy M81 is characterized using imaging observations from the far-ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (IR). We compare these data with models of the stellar, gas, and dust emission for sub-galactic regions. Our results suggest the existence of a diffuse dust emission not directly linked to the recent SF. We find a radial decrease of the dust temperature and dust mass density, and in the attenuation of the stellar light. The IR emission in M81 can be modeled with three components: 1) cold dust with a temperature =18+-2 K, concentrated near the HII regions but also presenting a diffuse distribution; 2) warm dust with T_w=53+-7 K, directly linked with the HII regions; and 3) aromatic molecules, with diffuse morphology peaking around the HII regions. We derive several relationships to obtain total IR luminosities from IR monochromatic fluxes, and we compare five different star formation rate (SFR) estimators for HII regions in M81 and M51: the UV, Halpha, and three estimators based on Spitzer data. We find that the Halpha luminosity absorbed by dust correlates tightly with the 24 microns emission. The correlation with the total IR luminosity is not as good. Important variations from galaxy to galaxy are found when estimating the total SFR with the 24 microns or the total IR emission alone. The most reliable estimations of the total SFRs are obtained by combining the Halpha emission (or the UV) and an IR luminosity (especially the 24 microns emission), which probe the unobscured and obscured SF, respectively. For the entire M81 galaxy, about 50% of the total SF is obscured by dust. We present u'g'r'i'BV photometry and optical spectroscopy of the Type Ib/Ic SN 2005bf covering the first ~100 days following discovery. The u'g'BV light curves displayed a double-peaked morphology, which is among Type Ib/Ic supernovae. The bolometric light curve indicates that SN 2005bf was a remarkably luminous event. Spectroscopically, SN 2005bf underwent a unique transformation from a Type Ic-like event at early times to a typical Type Ib supernova at later phases. The initial maximum in u'g'BV was accompanied by the presence in the spectrum of high velocity absorption lines of Fe II, Ca II, and H I. The photospheric velocity derived from spectra at early epochs was unusually low compared with ordinary Type Ib supernovae. We describe one-dimensional computer simulations which attempt to account for these remarkable properties. The most favored model is that of a very energetic (2 x 10^{51} erg), asymmetric explosion of a massive (8.3 M_sun) Wolf-Rayet WN star that had lost most of its hydrogen envelope. We speculate that an unobserved relativistic jet was launched producing a two-component explosion consisting of 1) a polar explosion containing a small fraction of the total mass and moving at high velocity, and 2) the explosion of the rest of the star. At first, only the polar explosion is observed, producing the initial maximum and the high velocity absorption-line spectrum resembling a Type Ic event. At late times, this fast-moving component becomes optically-thin, revealing the slower-moving explosion of the rest of the star and transforming the observed spectrum to that of a typical Type Ib supernova. We show that the observed ratio of the subtypes Ib,c and II core-collapse supernovae depends on the metallicity of the host galaxy, as expected on theoretical grounds. However, the observed relation differs considerably from expectations based on non-rotating models of single stars with mass loss. We argue that the predictions of recent models with rotation offer a much better agreement with observations, at least for progenitor stars with solar metallicity; calculations of models with higher and lower metallicities are required in order to substantiate these conclusions. We also suggest that systematic surveys of core collapse supernovae up to redshift of 1 with the SNAP satellite would allow to probe the effect of metallicity on supernovae properties during the past history of the universe., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figs. ; accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a comparison between the observed properties of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) and the predictions of simple models for the evolution of present day disk galaxies, including both low and high surface brightness galaxies. We focus in particular on the number density, column density distribution and gas density of DLAs, which have now been measured in relatively large samples of absorbers. From the comparison we estimate the contribution of present day disk galaxies to the population of DLAs, and how it varies with redshift. Based on the differences between the models and the observations, we also speculate on the nature of the fraction of DLAs which apparently do not arise in disk galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted in MNRAS
