Abstract

The Von K{\'a}rm{\'a}n Sodium experiment yields a variety of dynamo regimes, when asymmetry is imparted to the flow by rotating impellers at different speed F1 and F2. We show that as the intensity of forcing, measured as F1 + F2, is increased, the transition to a self-sustained magnetic field is always observed via a supercritical bifurcation to a stationary state. For some values of the asymmetry parameter $\\theta$ = (F1--F2)/(F1+F2), time dependent dynamo regimes develop. They are observed either when the forcing is increased for a given value of asymmetry, or when the amount of asymmetry is varied at sufficiently high forcing. Two qualitatively different transitions between oscillatory and stationary regimes are reported, involving or not a strong divergence of the period of oscillations. These transitions can be interpreted using a low dimensional model based on the interactions of two dynamo modes.

7. Inertial waves and modes excited by the libration of a rotating cube

Abstract

We report experimental measurements of the flow in a cubic container submitted to a longitudinal libration, i.e. a rotation modulated in time. Velocity fields in a vertical and a horizontal plane are measured in the librating frame using a corotating particle image velocimetry system. When the libration frequency $\sigma_0$ is smaller than twice the mean rotation rate $\Omega_0$, inertial waves can propagate in the interior of the fluid. At arbitrary excitation frequencies $\sigma_0<2\Omega_0$, the oscillating flow shows two contributions: (i) a basic flow induced by the libration motion, and (ii) inertial wave beams propagating obliquely upward and downward from the horizontal edges of the cube. In addition to these two contributions, inertial modes may also be excited at some specific resonant frequencies. We characterize in particular the resonance of the mode of lowest order compatible with the symmetries of the forcing, noted [2,1,+]. By comparing the measured flow fields to the expected inviscid inertial modes computed numerically [L.R.M. Maas, Fluid Dyn. Res. \textbf{33}, 373 (2003)], we show that only a subset of inertial modes, matching the symmetries of the forcing, can be excited by the libration., Comment: Phys. Fluids (in press)

8. Earth rotation prevents exact solid body rotation of fluids in the laboratory

Abstract

We report direct evidence of a secondary flow excited by the Earth rotation in a water-filled spherical container spinning at constant rotation rate. This so-called {\it tilt-over flow} essentially consists in a rotation around an axis which is slightly tilted with respect to the rotation axis of the sphere. In the astrophysical context, it corresponds to the flow in the liquid cores of planets forced by precession of the planet rotation axis, and it has been proposed to contribute to the generation of planetary magnetic fields. We detect this weak secondary flow using a particle image velocimetry system mounted in the rotating frame. This secondary flow consists in a weak rotation, thousand times smaller than the sphere rotation, around a horizontal axis which is stationary in the laboratory frame. Its amplitude and orientation are in quantitative agreement with the theory of the tilt-over flow excited by precession. These results show that setting a fluid in a perfect solid body rotation in a laboratory experiment is impossible --- unless tilting the rotation axis of the experiment parallel to the Earth rotation axis., Comment: accepted for publication in EPL

Abstract

The most recent comprehensive database of Martian impact craters was the result of the work of impact crater scientists (S.J. Robbins and B.M. Hynek) who carefully examined the available high-resolution imagery of Mars. Building on this previous work, we present the result of an alternative approach involving 56 planetary scientists and trained students. A web platform was designed for this purpose. All impact craters larger than 1 km in diameter were classified according to a simplified classification scheme, recording the primary or secondary nature of the crater, and the morphology of the ejecta (single, double, or multiple layered ejecta rampart sinuous [LERS], or low-aspect-ratio layer ejecta [LARLE]). In total, 8445 LERS craters, 24,530 partially buried craters, 55,309 secondary craters, and 288,155 craters in the category “standard” were identified. Our assessment differs for 8145 entries in the original database compiled by Robbins and Hynek, which are not considered to be impact structures. In this work, ~39,000 secondary craters have been associated with 108 primary craters. Coupled to the existing database, the database we propose here offers a complementary way to investigate the geological history of Mars. More specifically, the completion of layered ejecta crater morphologies down to 1 km and the connection established between secondary and primary impact crater sources will allow the implementation of statistical studies to reveal the spatial and temporal evolution of the impacted material characteristics. Thanks to the simplified classification we performed here, this version of the database can be easily used as a training data set for crater identification algorithms based on machine-learning techniques with the aim to identify smaller impact craters and to automatically define their morphological characteristics. Since it is not possible to confirm an impact structure from remote-sensing data alone, any Martian impact database at this stage remain

Abstract

International audience; Arsenic is one of the most hazardous elements associated to acid mine drainage with concentrationsranging from ≤ 1 µg L-1 to hundreds of mg L-1 in these leachates. To date, there is no affordable methodto efficiently treat As-rich AMD over the long term. Natural attenuation processes based on oxidationof iron and arsenic by autochthonous bacteria present in AMD promote precipitation of these elements.The exploitation of these processes offer a promising method for the treatment of As-rich acid minedrainage (AMD).In the present study, the Fe(II) oxidation rates and Fe and As removal rates have been investigated in alaboratory pilot-scale system with a continuous circulation of AMD water under controlled conditions(temperature, light, water-height and residence time). The system was fed with AMD from the Carnoulèsmine with a permanent acid character (pH 2-4), an average iron concentration of 0.5 g L-1 in the reducedform (Fe(II)) and an average arsenic concentration of 40 mg L-1 predominantly under As(III) oxidationstate.The efficiency and rates of Fe(II) oxidation and of Fe and As removal were determined in the pilot as afunction of experiment duration and for a range of residence times, in presence or absence of a floatingfilm that develops naturally at the surface of the water. The Fe- and As-rich biofilms formed in the pilotwere characterized for their mineralogy, redox As speciation, and bacterial quantification.During the early stage of experiment, results evidenced that the gradual coverage of the pilot channelbottom with an Fe-As precipitate, that contained 6 ± 3 x 106 bacterial cell/g (dry wt.), increased theFe(II) oxidation efficiency and the Fe and As removal by two orders of magnitude. At the steady state, 90 % Fe(II) was oxidized and  30 % Fe and  80 % As were precipitated within a residence time of200 min. Rate values were slightly lower than those measured in the field in the natural AMD stream atCarnoulès. The development of a thin floating film at the surface of water in the pilot channel affectedoxygen diffusion and retarded these rates. All these results improve our understanding of naturalprocesses responsible for arsenic attenuation in AMD, and give some indications that might beconsidered when designing an Fe and As removal passive treatment in AMDs.

Cependant il n’existe actuellement aucune méthode permettant d’évaluer les performances en décantation de tels dispositifs. Plusieurs solutions sont disponibles: une évaluation expérimentale sur site(possible mais avec un contrôle difficile des conditions du test), une évaluation expérimentale en laboratoire(possible mais coûteuse) ou une évaluation numérique. Cet article s’attache justement à présenter un outil numérique développé dans ce sens. Après une présentation du fonctionnement de l’outil de calcul, celui-ci est validé par confrontation avec des données expérimentales collectées sur modèle réduit.L’outil numérique développé est capable d’évaluer les performances d’un ouvrage de décantation avec une précision de l’ordre de 5% à 10%. Abstract

International audience; The dynamics of a straight chain of cylindrical neodymium magnets is considered. We showed that this system exhibits a behavior which is similar to that of a beam where the elastic rigidity acts like a restoring force. By using a Lagrangian approach, a linear model, accounting for different sets of boundary conditions, is derived. Specifically for the clamped-free case, eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes are determined. These theoretical results are compared to experiments. A good agreement is found, the discrepancies being attributed to the accumulation of defaults in the contact surface between the magnets. In the last part of the article, the equivalent beam behavior is sought by defining an equivalent flexural rigidity induced by magnetic dipoles interactions.

37. Réduction de la production des boues à l'aide d'ultrasons

Abstract

Les travaux présentés ont été effectués dans le cadre d'un projet LIFE Environnement porté par le service Eau Assainissement d'Angers Loire Métropole. Le traitement par ultrasons d'une partie des boues de recirculation (STEP de 6 300 eqH.) a réduit d'environ 26 % la production des boues. Le traitement par ultrasons ne semble avoir d'impact ni sur les performances d'épuration de la STEP, ni sur la qualité des boues épaissies, ni enfin sur l'émission directe des gaz à effet serre. La seule exception est une dégradation de la performance de traitement du phosphore. Le traitement est non valable d'un point de vue économique pour cette station d'une petite taille et avec un coût d'élimination des boues faible (10 e/tonne). L'extrapolation des résultats montre qu'après quelques modifications, le procédé pourrait s'avérer économiquement valable pour des STEP d'une taille ? 100 000 eqH avec un coût d'élimination finale des boues > 11 e /tonne. En présence d'un digesteur sur le site de la STEP, il est préférable d'appliquer le traitement par ultrasons non pas sur la filière eau mais sur la filière boues dans le but d'augmenter la production de biogaz. The Lower Cambrian Saint Petersburg blue clays are composed of predominant illite and chlorite, sometimes accompanied by kaolinite. The < 0.1 μm fraction has a high content of illite-smectite mixed layers. Particle-size distribution is more than 50% of clay particles and about 30% of silts. International audience; Beringite and steel shots were mixed with the upper 20 cm of the soil. One year after addition, the extractability in calcium nitrate (0.1 M) and the plant availability of soil-Cd and -Ni were investigated. The addition of beringite (5 % w/w) and steel shots (1 % w/w) led to a lower extractability of Cd and Ni. In the most contaminated plots, the extractability of Cd and Ni after 1 year had decreased, respectively, 54 % and 53 % for beringite and 41 % and 40 % for steel shots. The metal content in different organs of maize plants (shoots, sixth leaf, ear leaf and grains), grown on the field trial, was determined. The Cd transfer from soil to plant decreased following the addition of beringite, except in the most contaminated plots. No decreased soil-plant transfer of Cd was observed after the addition of steel shots. Both the addition of beringite and steel shots led to a lower Ni transfer to the maize aerial organs and grains. No phytotoxicity or deficiency symptoms due to the additives were observed on the plants. The addition of beringite and steel shots seems promising to lower the soil-plant transfer of Ni at such metal contaminated soils. The depth of mixing and the method of application of the soil additives in the field appear to be very significant variables; additional comparative tests are needed, however. (© Inra/Elsevier, Paris.); La béringite et la grenaille d’acier ont été mélangées dans les 20 premiers cm d’un sol pollué par des métaux. Un an après leurs apports, des extractions au nitrate de calcium (0,1 M) et la détermination du transfert sol-maïs pour le Cd et le Ni ont été réalisées. L’addition de béringite (5% w/w) et de grenaille d’acier (1% w/w) ont diminué l’extractibilité du Cd et du Ni. Dans les parcelles les plus polluées, l’extractibilité de Cd et Ni a été diminuée respectivement de 54% et 53% pour la béringite et de 41% et 40% pour la grenaille d’acier. Après une culture, les teneurs en métaux dans la 6ème feuille, la feuille de l’épi et les grains ont été déterminées. Le transfert sol-plante du Cd a diminué après l’apport de béringite (excepté sur les parcelles les plus polluées), contrairement à un apport de grenaille d’acier. L’addition de béringite et de grenaille d’acier a diminué le transfert du Ni du sol aux parties aériennes du maïs et aux grains. Aucuns symptômes de phytotoxicité ou de carence ont été observés suite à l’apport de ces amendements. L’utilisation de béringite ou de grenaille d’acier dans les sols pollués semble intéressante pour diminuer le transfert sol-maïs du Ni.
