With the aim of optimizing pest management, a study was carried out to determine the effect of cultivated plant diversity on arthropod communities and Helicoverpa armigera regulation in tomato cropping systems. Therefore, the diversity of cultivated plants and arthropod communities were assessed within and around tomato fields from 30 farmer’s fields randomly selected in South of Benin. In each tomato field, an experimental plot (or elementary plot) (20x20m) in the center of each tomato field was delimited. Each experimental plot was subdivided into a 4 m by 4 m quadrats in which all cropped plants were identified and counted. In the center of each quadrat, one Pitfall trap with soapy water leading to 25 Pitfall traps per field was placed and uplifted after 72 hours to capture the soil and litter macrofauna. The study showed that at the field scale, the abundances of omnivore predators, generalist predators and herbivores were greater in mixed cropping systems than in monocropping systems while the abundance of Helicoverpa armigera was lower in the mixed cropping systems than in monocropping systems. Multiple intercropped plant species increased the abundance of generalist and omnivore predators. This study allowed better understanding how plant diversity associated to tomato field structures arthropod food webs to finally enhance the ecological management of H. armigera.

Les mouches Tephritides en général et particulièrement la mouche de la mangue sont les principaux ravageurs dans les vergers de manguiers au Bénin. L’utilisation des parasitoïdes dans la lutte contre ces dernières exige de disposer au préalable d’un élevage sain, stable et à moindre coût de leurs hôtes que sont ces mouches. A cet effet, l’aptitude de la pomme africaine, de la papaye et de la banane à servir comme substrat de ponte et milieu de développement larvaire pour l’adaptation et l’élevage de la mouche de la mangue, Ceratitis cosyra et de C. anonae au laboratoire a été évaluée. Les fruits ont été testés en condition de choix et non choix dans des cages contenant cinquante couples de souche sauvage sexuellement matures de chacune des espèces. L’attraction des femelles par chaque fruit, le nombre, le poids, le taux d’émergence des pupes et le sexe ratio des imagos sont notés. Les trois fruits permettent le développement des deux espèces de mouches. Toutefois, la pomme et la papaye sont plus attractives et plus favorables que la banane pour C. cosyra. Quant à C. anonae, la papaye est plus attractive. Mais le poids de certaines pupes est faible comparativement à celui d’autres mouches de fruits élevées sur milieux artificiels. La présente étude met en évidence l’aptitude de chacun des fruits à servir pour l’élevage de C. cosyra et C. anonae au laboratoire. Elle permet d’envisager la maintenance à moindre coût au laboratoire des populations de ces mouches et à terme, l’élevage de leurs parasitoïdes.© 2016 International Formulae Group. Using parasitoids as control method requires prior, stable and cost effective hosts rearing that are these flies. Then, the ability of African apple, papaya and banana to serve as egg laying substrate and larvae rearing medium for adaptation and rearing in laboratory of originated wild strain of marula fruit fly, Ceratitis cosyra and Ceratitis anonae was evaluated. The fruits were tested in choice and non choice condition in cages containing fifty sexually mature couples of each fly species. Attraction of females by each fruit after introduction, the number, the weight, the rate of emergence of pupae and sex ratio of the adults were noted. The three fruits allow the development of two species of flies. However, apple and papaya are more attractive and more favorable than banana for the development of C. cosyra. As for C. anonae, papaya is more attractive. But the three fruits are suitable for his rearing in the laboratory. Nevertheless, the weight of some pupae was low compared to other Tephritids fruit flies reared on artificial media. This study demonstrates the ability of each of the tested fruit to serve for C. cosyra and C. anonae rearing in the laboratory. It allows considering a low cost maintenance in laboratory of populations of these flies and rearing of native parasitoids of fruit flies.© 2016 International Formulae Group. Bactrocera dorsalis est la Tephritidae la plus nuisible à la production fruitière au Bénin. Son introduction en 2004 a été à l’origine de l’accroissement des dégâts et des pertes économiques. Des travaux de recherche se sont orientés vers l’étude de sa biologie par la mise au point d’une colonie de laboratoire par desméthodes simples et peu coûteuses. L’objectif de cette étude était d’identifier parmi les fruits usuels disponibles sur le marché tout au long de l’année, le meilleur substrat pour la ponte et de développement de B. dorsalis. Ainsi, une étude comparative de différents paramètres biologiques a permis d’identifier le meilleur substrat pour sa production au laboratoire. Son développement a été étudié en condition de choix et de non choix sur la banane rose, Musa sp. et la pomme africaine, Irvingia gabonensis. Il ressort que les deux fruits testés favorisent un bon développement de B. dorsalis. Toutefois, la durée de développement varie selon que la mouche est placée en condition de choix ou de non choix. En comparaison à la banane rose, la pomme africaine se révèle être le substrat fruit le plus favorable pour la production de B. dorsalis au vu de la durée de développement des différents stades, du taux d’émergence, du sex-ratio et de la survie des adultes.© 2016 International Formulae Group. Research has turned to the study of biology of B. dorsalis through the establishment of a laboratory colony by simple and affordable methods. The objective of this study was to identify from the usual fruits available on the market throughout the year, the best substrate for eggs laying and larval development of B. dorsalis. Its development has been studied in both choice and no choice condition on the pink banana, Musa sp. and the bush mango, Irvingia gabonensis. It appears that the two fruit facilitate proper development of B. dorsalis. However, the development time depends on whether the fly is placed in choice or not choice condition. Compared to the pink banana, wild apple proves to be the most favorable substrate for B. dorsalis production in view of the duration of development of the various stages, the emergence rate, sex ratio and survival adults.© 2016 International Formulae Group.
