Type-2 diabetes affects an increasing percentage of the world's population and its control through dietary management, involving the consumption of health-promoting foods or their derived supplements, is a common strategy. Several mushroom species have been demonstrated to be endowed with antidiabetic properties, resulting from their ability in improving insulin sensitivity and production, or inhibiting the carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase. This study aimed to investigate for the first time the hypoglycemic properties of the edible mushroom Leccinum scabrum (Bull.) Gray. Mushroom extracts were prepared through the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique using green solvents with different polarity degrees. The inhibition activity of all the obtained extracts on both α-glucosidase and α-amylase was evaluated and the highest activity was observed for the EtOAc extract which showed an IC50 value about 60-fold lower than the reference compound 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) on α-glucosidase (0.42 ± 0.02 and 25.4 ± 0.6 µg/mL, respectively). As expected on the basis of the literature data concerning both α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition, a milder inhibition activity on pancreatic α-amylase was observed. Preliminary in vivo tests on Drosophila melanogaster carried out on the most active obtained extract (EtOAc) confirmed the in vitro observed hypoglycemic activity. Two new species, Chalciporus rubrostipitatus and Tylopilus purpureus, are proposed from India based on morphological and molecular data. Chalciporus rubrostipitatus is characterized by basidiomata having purplish red to reddish pileus with subtomentose to rugose surface, whitish pileal context, round to angular pores, and reddish orange to red stipe, which is pruinose toward the apex. Tylopilus purpureus produces basidiomata having a purple to vinaceous purple pileus, whitish pore surface that changes to reddish brown on bruising, and a minutely pubescent purplish stipe. Morphological descriptions and comparisons, taxonomic keys, and results of phylogenetic analyses using sequences of the ITS (internal transcribed spacer), 28S (28S rRNA), and RPB2 (second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II) gene regions are presented. Among the ethnographic data concerning psychoactive mushrooms, the most enigmatic case is that of "mushroom madness", a bizarre behaviour that periodically affected a part of the Kuma population and other ethnic groups of eastern New Guinea, and which according to the natives was due to the consumption of certain species of mushrooms. The research carried out by Wasson and Heim in the 1960s established that these forms of "madness" were not caused by the consumption of psychoactive mushrooms, although the reason for the involvement of mushrooms remained enigmatic. Up to now, the various sociological, psychological or psychiatric hypotheses that have attempted to explain the phenomenon of the "mushroom madness" have been based on the assumption that no concretely psychoactive mushroom was involved. On the basis of a series of new mycological, ethnomycological and epidemiological data, and the acquisition of surprisingly ignored ethnographic data from the 1980s, I propose here a different interpretation of the "mushroom madness" that starts from an opposite assumption, that is, that it was a social rite in which psychoactive mushrooms were actually involved. The reality of a "complex of hallucinogenic Boletaceae" spread from China to Melanesia is also highlighted, which is yet to be studied from a chemical-pharmacological point of view. Boletaceae, one of the major functional elements in terrestrial ecosystem and mostly represented by ectomycorrhizal symbionts of trees in Indian Himalaya and adjoining hills, are extraordinarily diverse and represented by numerous genera and species which are unexplored or poorly known. Therefore, their hidden diversity is yet to be revealed. Extensive macrofungal exploration by the authors to different parts of Himalaya and surroundings, followed by through morphological studies and multigene molecular phylogeny lead to the discovery of five new species of wild mushrooms: Leccinellum bothii sp. nov., Phylloporus himalayanus sp. nov., Phylloporus smithii sp. nov., Porphyrellus uttarakhandae sp. nov., and Retiboletus pseudoater sp. nov. Kgaria is described as a new porphyrellus-like genus of Boletaceae to accommodate Tylopilus cyanogranulifer, a dark brown to dull lilac/violet, or rarely, nearly black bolete with a series of oxidation reactions progressing from blue to red then nearly black and a dark brown spore deposit. Idiosyncratic blue-green pigment encrustations (cyanogranules) and a similarly colored reaction of the hyphae located on pileus and stipe surfaces are also diagnostic. Phylogenetic analyses of nuclear large-subunit rDNA (nrLSU), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef-1), and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb2) infer Kgaria as a unique generic lineage with two species, one of which is newly described (K. similis). Tylopilus olivaceoporus, originally described at the same time and as distinct from T. cyanogranulifer, appears to be conspecific with the latter. Some darkly pigmented taxa with similar oxidation reactions that were recently described from Brazil, Guyana, and China are further supported by morphology and molecular data as discrete lineages in separate genera in subfamily Boletoideae. The genus Phylloporus has a worldwide distribution and although members of it are known to be ectomycorrhizal associates of several tree families, their ectomycorrhizas and specific symbiotic interactions are almost unknown. In this study, basidiomes and ectomycorrhizas of Phylloporus were sampled in two monodominant tropical areas from Quercus sapotifolia and Quercus oleoides in eastern Mexico. Mycorrhizal root tips were characterized morpho-anatomically and using molecular method. Phylloporus rimosus and Phylloporus sp. were identified as ectomycorrhizas after bioinformatic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and large subunit (28S) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and translation elongation factor 1α (tef1-α) region of root-tips. The morphoanatomical description of these two ectomycorrhizas are presented here. Although there was presence of Phylloporus basidiomes in the two areas where Q. sapotifolia and Q. oleoides trees were dominant, the presence of belowground ectomycorrhizas was scarce. They were only found in a pure stand of Q. sapotifolia. This is the first work that confirms from both morphoanatomical and molecular evidence the ectomycorrhizal association of members of the genus Phylloporus. Fungi of the order Boletales are extremely important in both ecology and economy, since most of them are ectomycorrhizal fungi, which play vital roles in maintaining forest ecosystems, water and soil protection, vegetation restoration and so on. Although previous studies have shown that this order has a very high species diversity in China, there are few reports on the species diversity of boletes in Jiangxi Province, China. Based on morphological (macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics) and phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, and TEF1-α sequences), in this study, the wild boletes in Jiangxi Province were investigated, and five new species are described: Austroboletus albus, Xanthoconium violaceipes, Xanthoconium violaceofuscum, Xerocomus rutilans and Xerocomus subsplendidus. Molecular characterization of type specimens is a powerful tool used in clarifying species identity/circumscription, as well as establishing the taxonomic and phylogenetic status of organisms in question. However, DNA sequencing of aged herbarium collections can be a challenge due to the quantity and quality of DNA still present in the specimens. Herein, we report a custom DNA isolation protocol suitable for processing minute quantities of old specimen tissue and its utilization via high‐throughput sequencing technologies to obtain, for the first time, the genome assembly of the 134‐year‐old holotype of Boletus subvelutipes Peck, a North American fleshy pored mushroom of taxonomic and historical significance. A side‐by‐side evaluation of our DNA isolation method with that of a commercial "kit" by Qiagen is also presented. By relying on the type material, we have established the genetic identity of B. subvelutipes, as well as providing preliminary phylogenetic evidence for its generic affinities in Neoboletus within Boletaceae. The reference genome of the B. subvelutipes holotype provides a resource for future comparative genomic studies, taxonomic revisions in Boletaceae, and other evolutionary studies of fungi. During the routine survey for exploring the hidden macrofungal wealth of tropical Sal (Shorea robusta Roth) forests in West Bengal and Jharkhand (India), we found a specimen similar to Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceous (Snell & E.A.Dick) Snell & E.A.Dick. After careful morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis, the species was found to be conspecific with Tylopilus glutinosus Iqbal Hosen, a recently established taxon from Bangladesh. We report T. glutinosus for the first time from India and provide a detailed description, figures, a multigene phylogenetic analysis, and comprehensive comparisons with similar species. A distributional map is also provided.

Species of Leccinum Gray are widely distributed in the world and have very important ecological and economic values. However, due to the lack of molecular data and extensive sampling, the species diversity of Leccinum in China has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we studied the phylogenetic and morphological characteristics of collected specimens from tropical and subtropical regions of China. As a result, two new species L. phaeocarpum and L. pallidocastaneum were described, illustrated, and compared with similar taxa based on molecular and morphological evidence. Leccinum phaeocarpum can be recognized by the yellowish brown to dark brown pileus, crooked stipe, and small basidiospores, which is closely related to L. variicolor in phylogeny, but also different from the latter in the characteristics of unchanged color after injury. Leccinum pallidocastaneum can be recognized by the dirty white to chestnut pileus and relatively big basidiospores, which is closely related to L. duriusculum in phylogeny, but different from the latter in the dark pink tubes when injured and big basidiospores. Tylocinum Y.C. Li & Zhu L. Yang 2016 is a Boletaceae genus belonging in subfamily Leccinoideae. It was described in 2016 from China and, prior to this study, it contained only one species, T. griseolum Y.C. Li & Zhu L. Yang 2016. During our survey of Boletaceae from Thailand, we collected some specimens that could be identified as a Tylocinum species, different from T. griseolum.The bolete specimens, collected in forests dominated by Dipterocarpaceae and Fagaceae in northern Thailand, are described as Tylocinum brevisporum Raghoonundon & Raspé sp. nov. Macroscopic and microscopic descriptions with illustrations are provided, as well as a 3-gene phylogeny, which confirms the new taxon’s position in Tylocinum. Tylocinum brevisporum differs from the only other known Tylocinum species (T. griseolum) by its brownish-grey colour, greyish-orange to brownish-orange colour change in the hymenophore when bruised, smaller pores (≤ 0.5 mm), longer tubes (up to 6 mm long), shorter and narrower basidiospores, longer and broader basidia and longer pleurocystidia relative to cheilocystidia. T. brevisporum is the second species from the genus Tylocinum and the only one to be found outside China thus far.

Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses, an ectomycorrhizal fungus collected from Jiangxi, China, is described as a new species. R. atrofuscus is morphological characterized by a dark gray to black pileus, white to pale yellowish white hymenophore, a grayish brown to pale yellow context, which turning orange-yellow to rusty yellow when injured, a prominently and coarsely white to pale yellow to black reticulation on upper 3/4 or entire stipe, grayish yellow to pale yellow to yellowish brown basidiospores in KOH with measuring (7–)7.5–13(–13.5) × (3–)3.5–5(–5.5) μm. Phylogenetic analysis results showed that R. atrofuscus formed an independent lineage within Retiboletus. ABSTRACT Among many convergently evolved sequestrate fungal genera in Boletaceae (Boletales, Basidiomycota), the genus Octaviania is the most diverse. We recently collected many specimens of Octaviania subg. Octaviania, including several undescribed taxa, from Japan and the Americas. Here we describe two new species in subgenus Octaviania, O. tenuipes and O. tomentosa, from temperate to subtropical evergreen Fagaceae forests in Japan based on morphological observation and robust multilocus phylogenetic analyses (nrDNA ITS and partial large subunit [LSU], translation elongation factor 1-α gene [TEF1] and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II gene [RPB1]). Based on specimens from the Americas as well as studies of the holotype, we also taxonomically re-evaluate O. asterosperma var. potteri. Our analysis suggests that O. asterosperma var. potteri is a distinct taxon within the subgenus Octaviania so we recognize this as O. potteri stat. nov. We unexpectedly collected O. potteri specimens from geographically widespread sites in the USA, Japan and Colombia. This is the first verified report of Octaviania from the South American continent. Our molecular analyses also revealed that the RPB1 sequence of one O. tenuipes specimen was identical to that of a closely related species, O. japonimontana, and that one O. potteri specimen from Minnesota had an RPB1 sequence of an unknown species of O. subg. Octaviania. Additionally, one O. japonimontana specimen had an unusually divergent TEF1 sequence. Gene-tree comparison and phylogenetic network analysis of the multilocus dataset suggest that these heterogenous sequences are most likely the result of previous inter- and intra-specific hybridization. We hypothesize that frequent hybridization events in Octaviania may have promoted the high genetic and species diversity found within the genus.

Data on the diversity of boletoid fungi of the Bidoup – Nui Ba National Park are presented here and analyzed. An annotated list of 13 species are published for the first time for the National Park and 8 for the first time for Vietnam (Porphyrellus nigropurpureus, Phylloporus pachycystidiatus, Ph. rubiginosus, Pulveroboletus brunneopunctatus, Strobilomyces brunneolepidotus, S. calidus, Veloporphyrellus pseudovelatus, Xerocomus subparvus). Among plant communities of the National Park the mountain evergreen coniferous-broad-leaved forests dominated by Fagaceae, Lauraceae and Magnoliaceae and with the participation of representatives of Podocarpaceae and Pinaceae are characterized by the highest diversity of boletoid fungi. The species are illustrated with color photographs. The nucleotide sequences obtained during the study were deposited in NCBI GenBank.

Las Boletaceae del sur de América del Sur se tratan monográficamente como una continuación del trabajo del autor sobre los agáricos de Argentina (Prodromo de la Flora Agaricina Argentina, Lilloa 25: 5-462, 1952). Hay cuatro subfamilias y seis géneros con siete especies que se identifican y describen: Phaeogyroporus tropicus; Gyrodon rompelii; Gyrodon monticola; Xerocomus brasiliensis; Suillus granulatus; Boletus loyo; Leccinum nigrescens.

The Asia-Pacific region is renowned to harbor nearly half of the global hot spots of biodiversity. Accordingly, many endemic species of boletes have already been recorded from this geographic region. However, the majority of the specific descriptions of reported boletoid species follow classical concepts of taxonomy, and by comparison only a few taxa have been corroborated by modern molecular techniques. In this study, we focused on specimens in a new clade uncovered by our previous studies. By careful reexamination of macroscopic and microscopic characters of Boletus granulopunctatus, originally described from Japan, and Xerocomus mcrobbii, originally described from New Zealand, we discovered a new genus and species Amoenoboletus miraculosus from Sabah, Malaysia. In addition, three new combinations in Amoenoboletus are proposed, and a dichotomous key to species in the genus is provided. The phylogenetically close relationship among Amoenoboletus species suggests a tight geographic correlation in the Asia-Pacific region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents Paxilloboletus gen. nov., a new lamellate bolete genus represented by two tropical African species, Paxilloboletus africanus sp. nov. and Paxilloboletus latisporus sp. nov. Although the new taxa strongly resemble Paxillus (Paxillaceae), they lack clamp connections and form a separate generic clade within the Boletaceae phylogeny. The new species are lookalikes, morphologically only separable by their spore morphology. Descriptions and illustrations of the new genus and new species are given, as well as comments on ecology, distribution, and morphological differences with other gilled Boletaceae. Pulveroboletus ravenelii, an ectomycorrhizal fungus, has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine and mushroom dyes; however, its mitogenome and phylogenetic relationship with other taxa remain unexplored. Here, we sequenced the mitochondrial genome of P. ravenelii using next-generation sequencing and found that its mitogenome, a circular DNA molecule of 43,528 bp, comprised 15 protein-coding genes, 15 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The mitogenome had a base composition of A (37.52%), C (11.14%), G (12.21%), and T (39.13%) and a GC content of 23.35%. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to determine the phylogenetic relationship of this species with other taxa based on the mitochondrial genome sequence. This study revealed the phylogenetic positions of P. ravenelii and its related genera for the first time.

The genus Hemileccinum belongs to the subfamily Xerocomoideae of the family Boletaceae. In this study, phylogenetic inferences of Hemileccinum based on sequences of a single-locus (ITS) and a multi-locus (nrLSU, tef1-α, rpb1, rpb2) were conducted. Four new species, namely H. abidum, H. brevisporum, H. ferrugineipes and H. parvum were delimited and proposed based on morphological and molecular evidence. Descriptions and line-drawings of them were presented, as well as their comparisons to allied taxa. Our study shed new light on the recognition of the genus. The pileipellis of the species in this genus should mostly be regarded as (sub)epithelium to hyphoepithelium, because the pileipellis of most studied species here is composed of short inflated cells in the inner layer (subpellis) and filamentous hyphae in outer layer (suprapellis). Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceoides T.H. Li, B. Song & Y.H. Shen, 2002 is a species of basidiomycete in the family Boletaceae and is mainly found in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces in China. In this study, the mitochondrial genome of T. plumbeoviolaceoides was reported for the first time. The total length of the mitochondrial genome of T. plumbeoviolaceoides was 37,242 bp, with GC content of 23.0%. The mitochondrial genome of T. plumbeoviolaceoides contained 14 conserved protein-coding genes, 25 transfer RNA genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes. The phylogenetic tree indicated that T. plumbeoviolaceoides was closely related to Xerocomus impolitus and Butyriboletus roseoflavus. The complete mitochondrial genome of T. plumbeoviolaceoides will be useful for future research on basidiomycetes.

Hemileccinum depilatum ( Boletales, Basidiomycota) is currently known from Western and Central Europe, the Mediterranean, the Balkan Peninsula, and Asia (Azerbaijan and Turkey). The fungus is rare throughout its range and is included in the Red Lists in several European countries. In Ukraine, the species is known since 2006. Formerly, H. depilatum was found on the South Coast of Crimea, in the Mountain Crimea, Western Forest-Steppe and the Carpathians. The species was recorded only in five localities in three regions of Ukraine: Khmelnytsky, Transcarpathian, and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Over the recent years, the fungus has been also reported from the following five regions: Cherkasy, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Lviv, and Ternopil. Thus, by now the total number of the species localities increased from 5 to 14. However, the number of records grows due to additional data recently provided from field observations by amateur mycologists, rather than it can be considered as a result of an increasing population trend of the fungus. Undoubtedly, H. depilatum is a rarely occurring species in Ukraine and is to be protected. A preliminary assessment of the species at the national level using the IUCN criteria and categories is provided. Today, the main threat to its existence is collection of the fruit bodies by local population. Therefore, it is proposed to continue searching for new localities of the fungus and to protect those sites at least at the regional level, as well as to provide public outreach, primarily through social networks, which nowadays bring together tens of thousands of amateur mycologists in Ukraine.

During the 2014 survey of the mushroom flora of Gwangneung forest in South Korea, we collected two specimens of boletoid mushroom growing on a felled tree of Pinus koraiensis. These specimens were characterized by a light brown to reddish-brown pileus with appressed tomentum, pore surface bluing instantly when bruised, golden-yellow mycelium at the base of stipe, and lignicolous habitat. Both specimens were identified as Buchwaldoboletus lignicola, a rare basidiomycete, based on morphological characteristics and sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS; fungal barcode). Here, we describe these specimens and provide the first report of this genus in South Korea.

Leccinum is one of the most important groups of boletes. Most species in this genus are ectomycorrhizal symbionts of various plants, and some of them are well-known edible mushrooms, making it an exceptionally important group ecologically and economically. The scientific problems related to this genus include that the identification of species in this genus from China need to be verified, especially those referring to European or North American species, and knowledge of the phylogeny and diversity of the species from China is limited. In this study, we conducted multilocus (nrLSU, tef1-a, rpb2) and single-locus (ITS) phylogenetic investigations and morphological observisions of Leccinum from China, Europe and North America. Nine Leccinum species from China, including three new species, namely L. album, L. parascabrum and L. pseudoborneense, were revealed and described. Leccinum album is morphologically characterized by the white basidioma, the white hymenophore staining indistinct greenish blue when injured, and the white context not changing color in pileus but staining distinct greenish blue in the base of the stipe when injured. Leccinum parascabrum is characterized by the initially reddish brown to chestnut-brown and then pale brownish to brown pileus, the white to pallid and then light brown hymenophore lacking color change when injured, and the white context lacking color change in pileus but staining greenish blue in the base of the stipe when injured. Leccinum pseudoborneense is characterized by the pale brown to dark brown pileus, the initially white and then brown hymenophore lacking color change when injured, and the white context in pileus and stipe lacking color change in pileus but staining blue in stipe when bruised. Here we describe two new species in subgenus Octaviania, O. tenuipes and O. tomentosa, from temperate to subtropical evergreen Fagaceae forests in Japan based on morphological observation and robust multilocus phylogenetic analyses (nrDNA ITS and partial large subunit [LSU], translation elongation factor 1-α gene [TEF1] and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II gene [RPB1]). Based on specimens from the Americas as well as studies of the holotype, we also taxonomically re-evaluate O. asterosperma var. potteri. Our analysis suggests that O. asterosperma var. potteri is a distinct taxon within the subgenus Octaviania so we recognize this as O. potteri stat. nov. We unexpectedly collected O. potteri specimens from geographically widespread sites in the USA, Japan and Colombia. This is the first verified report of Octaviania from the South American continent. Our molecular analyses also revealed that the RPB1 sequence of one O. tenuipes specimen was identical to that of a closely related species, O. japonimontana, and that one O. potteri specimen from Minnesota had an RPB1 sequence of an unknown species of O. subg. Octaviania. Additionally, one O. japonimontana specimen had an unusually divergent TEF1 sequence. Gene-tree comparison and phylogenetic network analysis of the multilocus dataset suggest that these heterogenous sequences are most likely the result of previous inter- and intra-specific hybridization. This study aims to fill the gaps in ethnomycological knowledge in Serbia by identifying various fungal species that have been used due to their medicinal or nutritional properties. Ethnomycological information was gathered using semi-structured interviews with participants from different mycological associations in Serbia. A total of 62 participants were involved in this study. Eighty-five species belonging to 28 families were identified. All of the reported fungal species were pointed out as edible, and only 15 of them were declared as medicinal. The family Boletaceae was represented by the highest number of species, followed by Russulaceae, Agaricaceae and Polyporaceae. We also performed detailed analysis of the literature in order to provide scientific evidence for the recorded medicinal use of fungi in Serbia. The male participants reported a higher level of ethnomycological knowledge compared to women, whereas the highest number of used fungi species was mentioned by participants within the age group of 61–80 years. In addition to preserving ethnomycological knowledge in Serbia, this study can present a good starting point for further pharmacological investigations of fungi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New locations were identified and Italy is confirmed as the center of distribution of this species. Four new compounds, compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, along with two known compounds 3, 5, were isolated from the methanol extract of the fruiting body of Neoboletus magnificus. Imleria is a small genus of Boletaceae found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere characterized by the light to dark brown hymenophore that stains blue. In Florida, specimens of Imleria were collected that resembled I. badia, a species known primarily from northeastern North America and Europe. Five nuclear loci of these Florida specimens were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. A nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) phylogeny of Imleria was generated using primarily uncultured environmental sequences to confirm ectomycorrhizal associations. Based on morphological and molecular data, we describe a new species, Imleria floridana. Results from these analyses also support the new combination Imleria pallida. A lectotype of I. pallida is also established from Charles H. Peck's original material. We discuss the distinguishing characters and species of Imleria found in North America and provide a key to the known worldwide species of Imleria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The leccinoid fungi are boletes and related sequestrate mushrooms (Boletaceae, Basidiomycota) that have traditionally been placed in Leccinum, Boletus, Leccinellum, and a handful of other less familiar genera. These mushrooms generally feature scabers or scaber-like dots on the surface of the stipe, and they are often fairly tall and slender when compared with other boletes. They are ectomycorrhizal fungi and appear to be fairly strictly associated with specific trees or groups of related trees. In the present study, we investigate the phylogenetic relationships among the leccinoid fungi and other members of the family Boletaceae using portions of three loci from nuc 28S rDNA (28S), translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1), and the RNA polymerase II second-largest subunit (RPB2). Two DNA data sets (combined 28S-TEF1 and 28S-TEF1-RPB2), comprising sequences from nearly 270 voucher specimens, were evaluated using two different phylogenetic analyses (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference). Five major clades were obtained, and leccinoid fungi appeared in four of them. Taxonomic proposals supported by our results, representing a broadly circumscribed Leccinum that includes several sequestrate genera, along with Leccinellum, are made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the 2014 survey of the mushroom flora of Gwangneung forest in South Korea, we collected two specimens of boletoid mushroom growing on a felled tree of Pinus koraiensis. These specimens were characterized by a light brown to reddish-brown pileus with appressed tomentum, pore surface bluing instantly when bruised, golden-yellow mycelium at the base of stipe, and lignicolous habitat. Both specimens were identified as Buchwaldoboletus lignicola, a rare basidiomycete, based on morphological characteristics and sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS; fungal barcode). Misrecognition and toxic elements are two of several reasons responsible for food poisoning even death in the summer, a time when a great deal of edible mushrooms is celebrated in Southwestern China featured as complex environment conditions. It is highly important to identify the difference of chemical constituents in edible mushrooms at the regional‐scale. In this study, Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were applied to investigate organic matters and 18 mineral elements in porcini mushrooms of six species collected from 17 sampling sites in nine Yunnan cities. Classification models on the species, regions, and part levels were established using sparse partial least square‐discriminant analysis and principal component analysis. At the species level and region level accuracies of greater than 92.1% and 92.8% was achieved, respectively, whereas on the part level caps and stipes were classified with 96.7% accuracy. One of the most popular mushrooms is Boletus edulis characterized by polysaccharide, lipid, and ribonucleic acid as well as several phenolic compounds. Temperature and precipitation show possible influences on accumulations of polysaccharides and ribonucleic acid. Furthermore, the most important elements of caps contributed the difference between two parts are copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and phosphorus (P), whereas stipes instead by manganese (Mn) and cobalt (Co). These results demonstrated that FT‐IR spectroscopy and elements contents provide information sufficient for classifying different porcini mushroom samples, which might be helpful for controlling food security and quality assessment of edible mushrooms. Investigation has been made on contamination with mercury of a raw and stir-fried in moderate oil mushrooms grew in geochemically anomalous soils in south-west Asia. The "bolete" mushrooms studied were Baorangia bicolor , Boletus edulis, Boletus speciosus , Retiboletus griseus , Rugiboletus extremiorientalis and Sutorius magnificus. The batches of fresh mushrooms were respectively dried and stir-fried in moderate oil using a wok pan. Data obtained confirmed on elevated Hg content in mushrooms from the southwestern China and showed on elevated content of the element in popular mushroom dishes. The meal (100 g) made of fried "boletes" could provide for consumer Hg in dose from 0.27 to 1.4 (median 0.96) μg kg−1 body mass (RfD, reference dose is 0.3 μg kg−1 bm per day). Fried mushrooms if taken daily over a week period (100 g × 7) could provide Hg in dose from 1.9 to 9.6 (median 6.8) μg kg−1 bm. In view of the reference values for safe intake of inorganic Hg (PTWI, provisionally tolerable weekly intake is 4 μg kg−1 bm) and moderate consumption, the fried bolete mushrooms could provide Hg in doses exceeding the safe limit. • Boletes from the southwestern China can be elevated in Hg. • Dehydration causes concentration of Hg in fried mushrooms. • Stir-fried bolete could provide Hg in doses exceeding the safe limit. The type of Rossbeevera bispora and additional collections from the type location and adjacent areas were studied. Molecular data for R. bispora derived from the new collections are provided. In addition, R. griseobrunnea, a new species of Rossbeevera, is described from Xiangtoushan National Nature Reserve, Guangdong Province of China. The new species is characterized by its globose to subglobose sequestrate basidiomata with grayish white to grayish brown pileus, pale bluish discoloration in some parts of the hymenophore when injured becoming rusty brown to dark brown after being exposed to the air, fusoid (star-shaped in cross section) basidiospores 17-20 x 9-12 μm, and subcutis elements in the pileus. Based on multi-locus (ITS+nrLSU+tef1-α+rpb2) molecular phylogenetic analyses, both species appear as sister to R. paracyanea. We present color photos, macro- and micro-description, SEM basidiospores, molecular affinities of the species and compare them with morphologically similar taxa within the genus. We introduce three new Phylloporus species, P. pusillus, P. subbacillisporus and P. subrubeolus, from southwestern China and northern Thailand with macro- and micro-descriptions and illustrations. They are found mostly in forests dominated by Fagaceae or Dipterocarpaceae trees. A three-gene phylogenetic analysis of the new Phylloporus species along with other selected Phylloporus species confirmed that all new Phylloporus species are related to previously described Phylloporus species. Phylloporus pusillus and P. subrubeolus are morphologically similar, but the former can be separated by very small basidiomata, lamellae becoming deeper yellow to reddish with age and less densely encrusted walls of pileipellis hyphae. Phylloporus subbacillisporus can be easily distinguished from other species by shallowly intervenose lamellae and subbacilliform basidiospores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se presenta el primer registro de Boletus luridellus (Boletaceae, Boletineae) para los estados de Nuevo León y Tamaulipas, México. Se identificó la especie y se obtuvieron cultivos puros in vitro, se midió el crecimiento en dos medios de cultivo, se obtuvo la síntesis de micorrizas en plántulas de Quercus fusiformis y se regristra por primera vez la producción de esporomas de esta especie en condiciones de invernadero. En las entidades citadas, B. luridellus forma ectomicorrizas con Quercus fusiformis, Q. polymorpha y Q. canbyi, porque tiene potencial para producción de plántulas inoculadas de encino en vivero o invernadero, en el noreste de México, donde se utilizan frecuentemente para arborizar áreas urbanas, parques y nuevos fraccionamientos. Dicha simbiosis es de interés porque ocurre en una zona geográfica donde las temperaturas son altas durante el verano y el hongo puede inducir resistencia a sequía y mejorar crecimiento de las plantas. Se ha comprobado que Boletus luridellus crece bien en campo y produce esporomas cada año en los jardines del campus de la Facultad de Ciencias Forestales en Linares, Nuevo León, además se cita como comestible en la literatura especializada.

Species of Heimioporus (Boletaceae, Boletales) in China are investigated on the basis of morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from the nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and nuc 28S rDNA D1-D2 domains (28S) and translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1). Three species are recognized in China: H. conicus, sp. nov., H. gaojiaocong, sp. nov., and the previously described H. japonicus. Heimioporus xerampelinus, originally described from southwestern China, is synonymized with H. japonicus; specimens from China previously regarded as H. retisporus and H. subretisporus are confirmed to represent H. japonicus and H. gaojiaocong, respectively. A key to the Chinese taxa of the genus is provided. A preliminary biogeographical analysis shows that Heimioporus in East Asia and Southeast Asia/Australia are closely related. Heimioporus japonicus is a geographically widespread species occurring in East Asia and Southeast Asia; however, no taxa common to East Asia and Australia were uncovered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Morphology and phylogenetic analyses using the ITS and LSU regions of nrDNA were carried out on bolete collections belonging to Boletus s. str., originating from the Himalayan region of Pakistan. The phylogenetic analysis outlined the existence of previously unknown species of this genus. It is described here as Boletus himalayensis. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Boletaceae mushrooms are wild‐grown edible mushrooms that have high nutrition, delicious flavor and large economic value distributing in Yunnan Province, China. Traceability is important for the authentication and quality assessment of Boletaceae mushrooms. In this study, UV–visible and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies were applied for traceability of 247 Boletaceae mushroom samples in combination with chemometrics. RESULTS: Compared with a single spectroscopy technique, data fusion strategy can obviously improve the classification performance in partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS‐DA) and grid‐search support vector machine (GS‐SVM) models, for both species and geographical origin traceability. In addition, PLS‐DA and GS‐SVM models can provide 100.00% accuracy for species traceability and have reliable evaluation parameters. For geographical origin traceability, the accuracy of prediction in the PLS‐DA model by data fusion was just 64.63%, but the GS‐SVM model based on data fusion was 100.00%. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that the data fusion strategy of UV–visible and FTIR combined with GS‐SVM could provide a higher synergic effect for traceability of Boletaceae mushrooms and have a good generalization ability for the comprehensive quality control and evaluation of similar foods. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
