The article discusses foreign language education in the United States at the collegiate level. Concerns regarding a prevalent cultural illiteracy among U.S. citizens made more manifest since the September 11, 2001 attacks are discussed and innovative educational curricula are explored in their efforts to correct the imbalance. Details are given describing the increased use of popular and current events media in collegiate foreign language studies to better incorporate the contemporary socio-political challenges and characteristics of each language's parent culture. Additional educational reforms, such as proficiency guidelines and interdisciplinary cooperation are also mentioned.
