Birds with larger eyes are predicted to have higher spatial resolution because of their larger retinal image. Raptors are well known for their acute vision, mediated by their deep central fovea. Because foraging strategies may demand specific visual adaptations, eye size and fovea may differ between species with different foraging ecology. We tested whether predators (actively hunting mobile prey) and carrion eaters (eating dead prey) from the order Accipitriformes differ in eye size, foveal depth, and retinal thickness using spectral domain optical coherence tomography and comparative phylogenetic methods. We found that (1) all studied predators (except one) had a central and a temporal fovea, but all carrion eaters had only the central fovea; (2) eye size scaled with body mass both in predators and carrion eaters; (3) predators had larger eyes relative to body mass and a thicker retina at the edge of the fovea than carrion eaters, but there was no difference in the depth of the central fovea between the groups. Finally, we found that (4) larger eyes generally had a deeper central fovea. These results suggest that the visual system of raptors within the order Accipitriformes may be highly adapted to the foraging strategy, except for the foveal depth, which seems mostly dependent upon the eye size.

Once one of the most numerous seabirds of the Benguela upwelling system, the population of Cape cormorants Phalacrocorax capensis has decreased by 60% in the past three decades and the species is listed as Near Threatened. Declines in prey availability and/or abundance brought about by recent changes in the distribution of pelagic fish stocks and industrial purse-seine fishing are hypothesised to be a key driver of seabird population decreases in the southern Benguela. We investigated the foraging behaviour of breeding Cape cormorants by deploying GPS and temperature–depth recorders on 24 breeding adults from three islands off the coast of South Africa, two of them to the north of Cape Point and a third farther south on the western Agulhas Bank. This provided the first measures of foraging dispersal by a cormorant in the Benguela system, and enabled a comparison of foraging behaviour between birds from these islands. Foraging trips of Cape cormorants lasted between 17 min and >7 h, at a maximum distance of between 2 and 58 km away from their colony. Foraging effort was significantly greater for birds from farther north off the West Coast in terms of trip duration, distance travelled, number of dives and time spent flying compared to those from the southernmost island (Dyer), which is probably a response to low prey availability in the north. Because passerine birds have a very small relative olfactory bulb size, they have been considered to have weak olfactory capacities for decades. Recent investigations however suggest that breeding female blue tits (Parus caeruleus) are sensitive to lavender odour in the reproductive context of building and maintaining the nest. Here, we present results of an olfactory conditioning experiment in blue tits held in semi-natural conditions during the breeding season. We show that captive male blue tits, trained to associate lavender odour with a food reward, are more attracted to an empty feeder box emitting lavender odour than an odourless empty feeder box. Females did not distinguish significantly between empty feeders with and without lavender odour during the test phase, although they responded positively at the end of the training phase. These results suggest that male blue tits can use olfaction in a context not related to nest building. Additional experiments will be required to better understand the observed sex differences in response to the experimental set up, and in what context free-ranging individuals use olfaction.

The distribution of foraging activity for female Antarctic fur seals was investigated at Cap Noir (49° 07’ S, 70° 45’ E), Kerguelen Island in February 1998. Eleven females were fitted with a satellite transmitter and time-depth recorder. The 2 data sets were combined in order to locate diving activity of the seals. The occurrence of fish in the diet of the seals was investigated by the identification of otoliths in 55 scats collected at the breeding colony during the study period. Oceanographic variables were measured simultaneously by direct sampling and satellite remote sensing. The mesopelagic fish community was sampled at 20 stations along 4 transects, where epipelagic trawls were conducted at night at 50 m depth. We then investigated, using geographic information systems, the relationship between the spatial distribution of diving activity of the seals and oceanographic variables (sea surface temperature, surface chlorophyll concentration, prey distribution and bathymetry) at the same spatio-temporal scale. An inverse relationship was found between the main fish species preyed on by the fur seals and those sampled in trawl nets. However, diving activity of the seals was significantly related to oceanographic conditions, forage fish distribution and distance from the colony, although these relationships changed with the spatial scale investigated. A probabilistic model was developed for the distribution of diving activity, which predicted where females should concentrate their foraging activity according to the oceanographic conditions of the year, and where breeding colonies should be located.

A direction recorder, which can be carried by a flying bird on its back, has been used for the first time on a wild species. The device can detect and record the direction in which a bird is heading during flight. Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) were moved from their nesting colony to five different sites and fitted with direction recorders, and four homing flight paths were obtained. Our data show that the displaced birds were able to assume and maintain a homeward course soon after release over large areas of open sea, completely devoid of guiding features; topographical elements are, therefore, not necessary for correct orientation.

Congress, Lisboa, October 1992 The preliminary results of a research dealing with the study of global changes in the last 5 Ma by correlations of continental records between the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres (SW Europe and Argentina, respectively) are reported. The first analyses of the evolutionary patterns point out, in Argentina, two different turnover times: the first one is characterized by a high percentage of mammalautochthonous extinctions placed in the span of time between the last Chapadmalalan and the first Ensenadan faunas, around 2.5-2.3 Ma. It is possible to identify a high percentage of new immigrant genera from North America in the first turnover, while the second one, associated to the "last Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions", probably occurred at the beginning of the "Glacial Pleistocene", around 1.0-0.8 Ma. The oxygen isotope composition of phosphate from fossil mammal bones was measured to have a better climatic resolution from faunal elements of two hemispheres and to compare them by results as quantitative as possible. The preliminary efforts are brought out on fourteen deposits from SE Spain. Isotopic and chemical results strongly suggest the existence of a relation between the oxygen isotope composition in various skeletal components and the taphonomic processes of a single deposit. The variations of 0180 in the mammal teeth of Equidae from SE Spain suggest a shift towards a colder environment from the older one, Huelago, to more recent deposits, as well as from Venta Micena to Fuensanta in agreement with the transition from the Middle to the Upper Villafranchian, around 2.5 Ma, and the transition between the "Preglacial" to the "Glacial" Pleistocene, around 1.9-0.8 Ma.
