1. Propagation of acoustic surface waves on a phononic surface investigated by transient reflecting grating spectroscopy

Abstract

We present a study of surface acoustic waves (SAW) propagation on a 1D phononic surface (PS) by mean of an heterodyne-detected transient reflecting grating experiment. We excited and detected coherent stationary SAWs characterized by variable wave-vectors. The measured SAW frequencies enables the characterization of the band diagram of this PS sample beyond the first Brillouin zone (BZ). Four different SAW frequencies have been revealed, whose band diagram show articulated dispersion phenomena. In order to address the nature of the investigated SAWs, the experimental results are compared with a numerical simulation of elastic modes based on a finite element model. The observed SAWs are addressed to four Bloch waves characterized by different frequencies and surface energy localization. Moreover, we measured the SAW propagation on a flat non-phononic part of the sample surface and compared it with results from the PS., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We present heterodyne detected transient grating (HD-TG) measurements on 1D surface corrugated Phononic Crystal (PC) with characteristic band edge wave vector of $\pi/5$ $\mu$m$^{-1}$. This experimental investigation enables both the direct band diagram characterization of surface waves and a direct measurement of the group velocity dispersion. The experimental data are compared to the simulations performed with the structural-mechanic module of a finite element method software. In this work we show the presence of two band gaps, observe distinct types of surface waves and, for the first time to our knowledge, measure extremely slow waves in correspondence of the band edge wave vector., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. Abstract

We propose the design of a tubular phononic crystal (TPC) for the purpose of sensing the physical properties of a liquid filling the hollow part of the tube. The TPC is constituted by a periodic repetition of washers along a hollow pipe with the advantage of avoiding any perturbation of a flowing fluid by any element inside the tube. Using finite element simulations, we demonstrate the existence of complete as well as polarization dependent bandgaps inside which one can design localized modes associated with defects. The most sensitive cavity to the liquid sound velocity is found to be constituted by a Fabry–Pérot (F–P) cavity. The signature of the cavity modes can be detected as peaks or dips in the transmission spectrum as well as at the external surface of the cavity. We study the dramatic effect of the liquid viscosity, more particularly shear viscosity, on these features and discuss the conditions for their practical observation. A TPC test sample made of a polymer is fabricated by means of 3D printing and characterized without the liquid by transmission measurements. The comparison with the simulations showed the necessity of considering the damping of the polymer whose effect on the transmission features is discussed. Our sensor design can find many applications at different scales in several systems transporting a fluid as microfluidic channels in micro- and nanotechnologies, syringes in medicine, or pipelines in civil engineering. Abstract

We have numerically investigated the transmission of an antisymmetric Lamb wave through a line of silicon pillars erected onto a homogeneous silicon plate when the frequency is tuned to a resonant frequency of the pillars. For either a bending mode or a compressional mode, the resonators emit in the plate a wave 180° out-of-phase with the exciting Lamb wave, resulting in dips in the transmission spectrum. We show that transmission at resonance can be actively controlled by applying an external force, either tangential (bending eigenmode) or axial (compressional eigenmode), on top of the pillars. The transmission coefficient can be precisely controlled by finely tuning either the phase or the amplitude of the external force. For specific dimensions of the structure, both resonant modes arise at the same frequency. This geometry has the advantage of offering an additional degree of freedom for the direction of the external force but is less favorable from an energy point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Changes at the organic/electrode interface of copper/phthalocyanine after electrode deposition has been studied with picosecond ultrasonics. Results indicate that Al particles in the interfacial region grow smaller based on the on the sharper interface that Al forms with CuS18 than with gold. There was also a slow migration of metallic particles within the organic layer leads which resulted in a broadening of the interfacial region after a few weeks.

Abstract

The elasticity of Langmuir-Blodgett submicronic films of copper(II) octabutoxyphthalocyanine was examined through the picosecond ultrasonic method. The amplitude of the acoustic echoes was measured against the number of monolayers. For the thinnest samples, the acoustic echoes were seen with a delay whose origin was examined. The accuracy of the technique was found to be only limited by the precise knowledge of the density of the material.

Abstract

This article provides expert opinion on the use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in young patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and in specific clinical situations. As peculiar challenges apply to imaging children, paediatric aspects are repeatedly discussed. The first section of the paper addresses settings and techniques, including the basic sequences used in paediatric CMR, safety, and sedation. In the second section, the indication, application, and clinical relevance of CMR in the most frequent CHD are discussed in detail. In the current era of multimodality imaging, the strengths of CMR are compared with other imaging modalities. At the end of each chapter, a brief summary with expert consensus key points is provided. The recommendations provided are strongly clinically oriented. The paper addresses not only imagers performing CMR, but also clinical cardiologists who want to know which information can be obtained by CMR and how to integrate it in clinical decision-making

Abstract

We present results of a series of experiments performed on LiBr, 6H20 from room temperature down to 172 K ≈ 1.2Tg. These ultrasound, Brillouin and depolarized light scattering, and transient grating experiments show that, above 215 K, this solution behaves like supercooled water: its zero frequency sound velocity C0 continuously decreases with decreasing temperature, and the reorientational dynamics of the water molecules can be directly detected at some temperatures of this domain. Conversely, below 215 K, a new regime sets in, where the apparent C0 is practically temperature independent and where a β, Arrenhius like, relaxation process coexists with the usual, Vogel-Fulcher like, α relaxation process of the supercooled liquid. These results are similar to those recently obtained in LiCl, 6H2O. The onset of the new regime is possibly due to an increase of the interaction of the water molecules with a neighboring Li+ ion when lowering the temperature. We also compare our results with published dielectric data on water solutions of glass forming polyalcohols. Some of them present a low temperature splitting of their relaxation time similar to what is found in LiBr, 6H2O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the results of a series of ultrasound, Brillouin scattering, and optical heterodyne detected transient grating experiments performed on a LiCl, 6H2O solution from room temperature down to the vicinity of its liquid-glass transition, Tg∼138 K. Down to T∼215 K, the supercooled liquid has a behavior similar to what is expected for supercooled water: its zero frequency sound velocity, C0, continuously decreases while the corresponding infinite frequency velocity, C∞, sharply increases, reflecting the increasing importance of H bonding when temperature is lowered. Below 215 K, specific aspects of the solution, presumably related to the role of the Li+ and Cl- ions, modify the thermal behavior of C0, while a β relaxation process also appears and couples to the sound propagation. Abstract

Brillouin light scattering was used to measure the elastic properties of a set of Langmuir–Blodgett films with varying thickness. Samples are constituted of stacks from 3 to 75 monolayers of a octabutoxyphthalocyanine copper derivative, deposited on Si substrates by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. Due to the strong contrast in the elastic properties of the organic films and the substrate, it is shown that an elastic anomaly, if any, should be revealed by the Rayleigh mode and the first Sezawa mode which both strongly depend on the value of C[sub 44]. Rayleigh and Sezawa dispersion curves are computed assuming that the elastic constants do not depend on the number of individual monolayers in the LB film. Within the accuracy of the experimental data, the theory well reproduces the trend of the effective velocities, showing so that the elastic properties of the material do not depend on the number of molecular monolayers in the stack. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. In a recent paper, Cutroni and Mandacini [J. Chem. Phys. 114, 7124 (2001)] measured sound velocities and absorption coefficients in m-toluidine by an ultrasonic technique. They reported velocities that differ from previous published data and attributed some of these discrepancies to a possible difference between the local temperature which actually prevails at the place where the velocity is determined in these previous measurements, and the real temperature of the liquid. Abstract

We report on the occurrence of strong nonlinear acousto-optic interactions in phoxonic structures, that support, simultaneously, acoustic and optical localized resonant modes, under the influence of acoustic losses. Deploying a detailed theoretical investigation of the acousto-optic coupling in the specific case of a one-dimensional phoxonic cavity, realized by homogeneous SiO 2 and Si layers, we demonstrate the possibility for an enhanced modulation of light with sound through multi-phonon exchange mechanisms. A full electrodynamic and elastodynamic multiple scattering approach is employed to describe the optical and acoustic modes, and to account for their mutual interaction and the underlying effects both in time and frequency domains. In particular, we discuss the influence of hypersonic attenuation on the acousto-optic interaction by considering typical acoustic losses in the GHz regime. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Periodic media offer impressive opportunities to manipulate the transport of classical waves namely light or sound. Elastic waves can scatter light through the so-called acousto-optic interaction which is widely used to control light in telecommunication systems and, additionally, the radiation pressure of light can generate elastic waves. Concurrent control of both light and sound through simultaneous photonic-phononic, often called phoxonic, band-gap structures is intended to advance both our understanding as well as our ability to manipulate light with sound and vise versa. In particular co-localization of light and sound in phoxonic cavities could trigger nonlinear absorption and emission processes and lead to enhanced acousto-optic effects. In the present communication, we present our efforts towards the design of different phoxonic crystal architectures such as three-dimensional metallodielectric structures, two-dimensional patterned silicon slabs and simple one-dimensional multilayers, and provide optimum parameters for operation at telecom light and GHz sound. These structures can be used to design phoxonic cavities and study the acousto-optic interaction of localized light and sound, or phoxonic waveguides for tailored slow light-slow sound transport. We also discuss the acousto-optic interaction in one-dimensional multilayer structures and study the enhanced modulation of light by acoustic waves in a phoxonic cavity, where a consistent interpretation of the physics of the interaction can be deduced from the time evolution of the scattered optical field, under the influence of an acoustic wave.

Abstract

We report on the occurrence of strong nonlinear acousto-optic interactions in a one-dimensional model phoxonic cavity that supports, simultaneously, photonic and phononic localized resonant modes, by means of rigorous electrodynamic and elastodynamic calculations. We show that these interactions can take place when photons and phonons of long lifetime are confined in the same region of space and lead to enhanced modulation of light by acoustic waves through multiphonon exchange mechanisms. © 2010 The American Physical Society.
