Abstract

Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries. Space-use hotspots of commercially valuable sharks and of internationally protected species had the highest overlap with longlines (up to 76% and 64%, respectively), and were also associated with significant increases in fishing effort. We conclude that pelagic sharks have limited spatial refuge from current levels of fishing effort in marine areas beyond national jurisdictions (the high seas). Our results demonstrate an urgent need for conservation and management measures at high-seas hotspots of shark space use, and highlight the potential of simultaneous satellite surveillance of megafauna and fishers as a tool for near-real-time, dynamic management.

Abstract

Eight species of Cancer occur in Mexico, all of them exclusively on the Pacific Coast: C. anthonyi, C. antennarius, C. productus, C. gracilis, C. jordani, C. branneri, C. amphioetus, C. johngarthi, the first four of which are commercially exploited. A revision of synonymies, time-space distribution patterns, morphology, size and bioecological notes for each species is presented along with the results of a one year sampling survey in 31 stations of Bahia de Todos Santos ( 31°40'N; 116°40'W). A key to all species is provided. .

Abstract

International trade in vulnerable marine species is regulated once they are listed in CITES Appendices (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Parties to the Convention submit proposal(s) 150 days prior to the CITES Conference for voting on the inclusion of new species in Appendices I and II, making a case for why CITES listing criteria are met in each case. Before the vote, Parties receive advice from (a) the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, (b) the International Union for Conservation of Nature—TRAFFIC and (c) the CITES Secretariat, among others. This paper offers an expert review of listing processes, which are the subject of much debate in fishery and environment‐protection communities, looking at two specific cases: silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis, Carcharhinidae) and bigeye thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus, Alopiidae). The reviewers determine that the evidence made available to voting Parties is substantial, but suffers from non‐standard presentation across assessments. The best available data are not always presented or described transparently in relation to CITES criteria. An extension of the assessment period, as well as the opportunity to refute evidence, has been suggested as ways to support more informed and effective decision‐making by CITES Parties, whose composition of delegations varies greatly in their experience of marine species management and trade. Experts welcomed a greater coherence of advice between fishery and non‐fishery sources in the long term, and proposed a range of suggested improvements for the delivery of information and advice to CITES Parties. Abstract

We report on an adult female white shark tracked for 288 days and 7,100 km in the NE Pacific Ocean. The shark, tagged with a real-time satellite tag off Guadalupe Island, Mexico in October 2006, remained around the island for 3.5 months but left in early February 2007 for a ca. 3,900 km westward migration. Heading and swimming speed data showed that: a) the arc-like route followed by this shark during oceanic travel involved strongly directional rapid movement, and b) once the shark arrived to a specific (ca. 680 km wide) area located 790 km north-northeast of the Hawaiian Islands, it switched into a distinct roaming behavior. The shark remained in this roaming area from late March to at least late July 2007. We show that real-time satellite tags can provide unique and valuable information about the migratory behavior of white sharks. Se presentan datos sobre una hembra adulta de tiburón blanco rastreada por un total de 288 días y 7.100 km en el océano Pacífico nororiental. El tiburón, marcado con una marca satelital de tiempo real en la Isla Guadalupe, México, en octubre 2006, se movió durante 3,5 meses alrededor de la isla, pero la dejó a principios de febrero 2007 para migrar casi 3.900 km hacia el oeste. Los datos de velocidad y rumbo de natación mostraron que: a) la peculiar ruta en forma de arco seguido por este tiburón durante el viaje oceánico incluyó movimiento rápido fuertemente direccional de gran escala, y b) una vez que el tiburón llegó a una zona específica (aprox. 680 km de ancho) ubicada 790 km al norte-noreste de las islas de Hawai, cambió a un comportamiento distintivo de vagancia. El tiburón se mantuvo en esta área de vagancia desde fines de marzo hasta al menos fines de julio de 2007. Las marcas satelitales de tiempo real pueden proporcionar información única y valiosa sobre el comportamiento migratorio de los tiburones blancos.
