The development of diplexers for ECRH has been pursued at a number of institutes because of their attractive variety of applications: Power combination, non-mechanical, electrically controlled switching (of combined beams) between launchers with tens of kHz, and discrimination of low-power ECE signals from high-power ECRH is feasible. In a first part, this paper reports on plasma experiments with a ring resonator (Mk IIa) at ASDEX Upgrade. Commissioning experiments on fast switching between two launchers for synchronous stabilization of neoclassical tearing modes, as well as in-line ECE measurements have been performed, and experimental issues and first results are discussed. A clear influence of the switching phase on the amplitude of the 3/2 NTM mode was measured, complete stabilization could, however, not be demonstrated yet mainly due to imperfect resonator control. Concepts for improved tracking of the diplexers to the gyrotron frequency are presented. In a second part, the design of diplexers with ring resonators matched to HE11 fields is briefly discussed; these devices can be connected to corrugated waveguides without any mode converters. A compact version (MQ IV) is under investigation, which is compatible with the ITER ECRH system (170 GHz, 63.5 mm waveguide, vacuum tight casing), with the final goal of high-power tests at the 170 GHz gyrotron facility at JAEA in Naka, Japan. First low-power test results are presented.

Sensitive millimeter wave diagnostics need often to be protected against unwanted radiation like, for example, stray radiation from high power Electron Cyclotron Heating applied in nuclear fusion plasmas. A notch filter based on a waveguide Bragg reflector (photonic band-gap) may provide several stop bands of defined width within up to two standard waveguide frequency bands. A Bragg reflector that reflects an incident fundamental TE11 into a TM1n mode close to cutoff is combined with two waveguide tapers to fundamental waveguide diameter. Here the fundamental TE11 mode is the only propagating mode at both ends of the reflector. The incident TE11 mode couples through the taper and is converted to the high order TM1n mode by the Bragg structure at the specific Bragg resonances. The TM1n mode is trapped in the oversized waveguide section by the tapers. Once reflected at the input taper it will be converted back into the TE11 mode which then can pass through the taper. Therefore at higher order Bragg resonances, the filter acts as a reflector for the incoming TE11 mode. Outside of the Bragg resonances the TE11 mode can propagate through the oversized waveguide structure with only very small Ohmic attenuation compared to propagating in a fundamental waveguide. Coupling to other modes is negligible in the non-resonant case due to the small corrugation amplitude (typically 0.05·λ0, where λ0 is the free space wavelength). A Bragg reflector for 105 and 140 GHz was optimized by mode matching (scattering matrix) simulations and manufactured by SWISSto12 SA, where the required mechanical accuracy of ± 5 μm could be achieved by stacking stainless steel rings, manufactured by micro-machining, in a high precision guiding pipe. The two smooth-wall tapers were fabricated by electroforming. Several measurements were performed using vector network analyzers from Agilent (E8362B), ABmm (MVNA 8-350) and Rohde&Schwarz (ZVA24) together with frequency multipliers. The stop bands around 105 GHz (- 55dB) and 140 GHz (-60dB) correspond to the TE11-TM12 and TE11-TM13 Bragg resonances. Experiments are in good agreement with theory.

Characteristics of ring resonator diplexers for high-power ECRH are briefly reviewed. Commissioning experiments performed on ASDEX Upgrade with the diplexer Mk IIa are presented, which demonstrate slow and fast switching of the power between two launchers, and thus the capability for efficient suppression of neoclassical tearing modes and simultaneous central heating of the plasma. The development of the compact diplexer Mk IIIb is discussed, and test results are presented. Finally, an evacuated design for 170 GHz is shown.

High-power resonant diplexers for millimetre waves have various promising applications in ECRH systems. The round-trip resonator length of a diplexer needs to be accurately tuned to match its prescribed functionality. For this purpose one of the mirrors in the FADIS MkIIa diplexer has been mounted on a motion system, in order to control the mirror to its desired location despite the presence of substantial disturbances. The mechanical properties and control strategy for the mirror motion system have been designed such as to meet the overall system requirements. The performance of the motion system has been experimentally validated in various high power mm-wave tests.

Global Models are widely used to study reaction kinetics in low-temperature plasma discharges. The governing conservative equations are simplified into a system of ordinary differential equations in order to provide computationally feasible conditions to study complex chemistries with hundreds of species and thousands of reactions. This paper presents a detailed two-temperature global model for a H2O–He mixture. The model developed in this work uses a statistical thermodynamics approach to solve the heavy particles energy equation self-consistently together with the electron energy and particles balance equations in order to improve the description of reactive plasma environments. Three analytical test cases are presented to validate and demonstrate the capability of this newly developed functionality embedded in PLASIMO software's [1] global model module. The developed H2O–He models are compared with the reported results for a radio-frequency plasma [2] and then with experimental measured electron densities and gas temperature for a microwave induced plasma. In addition, conversion and energy efficiencies of hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide productions are compared with experimental values (only for hydrogen) for a pure H2O microwave induced plasma and with available literature results. This comparison underlines the challenges toward finding an optimal plasma configuration and conditions for production of hydrogen from water. The three analytical test cases for validation of the gas-temperature balance implementation in the PLASIMO global model and the detailed developed H2O–He model can be used as benchmarks for other global plasma models. This work addresses plasma chemistry in the core of a vortex-stabilized microwave discharge for CO2 conversion numerically, focusing on the pressure-dependent contraction dynamics of this plasma. A zero-dimensional model is presented for experimental conditions in a pressure range between 60 and 300 mbar and a temperature range between 3000 and 6500 K. Monte Carlo flux (MCF) simulations, which describe electron kinetics, are self-consistently coupled to the plasma chemistry model. The simulation results show that an increase in pressure is accompanied by a transition in neutral composition in the plasma core: from a significant amount of CO2 and O2 at low pressures to a O/CO/C mixture at high pressures, the composition being determined mostly by thermal equilibrium and by transport processes. The change of temperature and composition with pressure lead to higher ionisation coefficient and more atomic ion composition in the plasma core. These changes result in an increase in ionisation degree in the plasma core from 10−5 to 10−4. These factors are shown to be fundamental to drive contraction in the CO2 microwave discharge. Understanding and controlling contraction phenomena of plasmas in reactive flows is essential to optimize the discharge parameters for plasma processing applications such as fuel reforming and gas conversion. In this work, we describe the characteristic discharge modes in a CO2 microwave plasma and assess the impact of wave coupling and thermal reactivity on the contraction dynamics. The plasma shape and gas temperature are obtained from the emission profile and the Doppler broadening of the 777 nm oxygen triplet, respectively. Based on these observations, three distinct discharge modes are identified in the pressure range of 10 mbar to atmospheric pressure. We find that discharge contraction is suppressed by an absorption cutoff of the microwave field at the critical electron density, resulting in a homogeneous discharge mode below the critical transition pressure of 85 mbar. Further increase in the pressure leads to two contracted discharge modes, one emerging at a temperature of 3000 K–4000 K and one at a temperature of 6000 K–7000 K, which correspond to the thermal dissociation thresholds of CO2 and CO, respectively. The transition dynamics are explained by a thermo-chemical instability, which arises from the coupling of the thermal-ionization instability to heat transfer resulting from thermally driven endothermic CO2 dissociation reactions. The subatmospheric CO2 microwave plasma is known to contract to a narrow filament with rising pressure as result of a mode transition. This changing state of contraction is investigated in relation to its dielectric properties, in order to directly relate the discharge parameters to the discharge radius. The electron density and gas temperature are measured, respectively, by 168 GHz microwave interferometry and Doppler broadening of the 777 nm oxygen emission lines. The plasma is operated in steady state with 1400 W at 2.45 GHz, between 100 mbar and 400 mbar. Electron density values in the central region range from 1018 to 1020 m−3 between the discharge modes, while the gas temperature increases from 3000 K to 6500 K, in good agreement with previously reported values. Based on the dielectric properties of the discharge in relation to the plasma radius, it is found that the discharge column constitutes a radius of a single skin depth. Implications of these insights on the conditions of previously reported CO2 dissociation experiments are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three dimensional electromagnetic modelling of a free-standing CO2 microwave plasma has been performed, by describing the plasma as a dielectric medium. The relative permittivity and conductivity of the medium are parametrised. The waveguide geometry from the experiment, including the tuner, is put into the model, knowing that this corresponds to maximum power transfer of the microwave generator to the plasma under plasma impedance matching conditions. Two CO2 plasma discharge regimes, differing mainly in pressure, input power and temperature, have been studied. The model's validity has been checked through study of materials of known conductivity. From measurements of the neutral gas temperature and the plasma electron density profile, the reduced electric field is determined. From the parametrisation of the dielectric properties, a range for the effective electron-neutral collision frequency for momentum transfer is estimated. The results for the reduced electric field and the range of the electron neutral collision frequency obtained, are consistent as verified by simulations using BOLSIG+. In addition, from this comparison it is possible to narrow down the range of the collision frequencies, and to estimate the electron temperature. The reduced electric field lies between 80 and 180 Td for the relatively low pressure, low input power, the so-called 'diffuse' regime. For the relatively high pressure, high input power ('contracted') regime it lies between 10 and 60 Td. The normalised collision frequency lies between 1.6 and 2.3 for the diffuse regime, while for the contracted regime it lies between 2 and 3. The electron temperature ranges from 2 to 3 eV for the diffuse regime, and from 0.5 to 1 eV for the contracted regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The input power of a CO2 microwave plasma is modulated at kHz rate in scans of duty cycle at constant average power to investigate gas heating dynamics and its relation to dissociation efficiency. Rotational temperature profiles obtained from rotational Raman scattering reveal peak temperatures of up to 3000 , while the edge temperature remains cold (500). During the plasma 'OFF'-period, the gas cools down convectively, but remains overall too hot to allow for strong overpopulation of vibrational modes (2200 in the core). Fast optical imaging monitors plasma volume variations and shows that power density scales with peak power. As dissociation scales with observed peak rotational temperature, it is concluded that thermal processes dominate. A simple 0D model is constructed which explains how higher power density favors dissociation over radial energy transport. Thermal decomposition is reviewed in relation to quenching oxygen radicals with vibrationally excited CO2, to reflect on earlier reported record efficiencies of 90%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
