Even though citizen and patient engagement in health research has a long tradition, citizen science in health has only recently gained attention and recognition. However, at present, there is no clear overview of the specifics and challenges of citizen science initiatives in the health domain. Such an overview could contribute to highlighting and articulating the different needs of stakeholders engaged in any form of citizen science in the health domain. It may also encourage the input of citizens and patients alike in health research and innovation, policy, and practice. This paper reports on a survey developed by the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA)’s Working Group “Citizen Science for Health,” to highlight the perceived characteristics and enabling factors of citizen science in the health domain, and to formulate a direction for future work and research. The survey was available in six languages and was open between January and August 2022. The majority of the 254 respondents were from European countries, and the largest stakeholder respondent group was researchers. Respondents were asked about their perspectives on the particular characteristics of citizen science performed in health and biomedical research, as well as the challenges and opportunities it affords. Ethics, the complexity of the health domain, and the overlap in roles whereby the researcher is sometimes also the subject of research, were the main issues suggested as being specific to citizen science in health. The top two areas that respondents identified as in need of development were “balanced return on investment” and “ethics.” This publication discusses these and other conditions with references to current literature.

Abstract People living with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) homozygous for F508del present more severe phenotypes. PwCF with compound heterozygous genotypes F508del /A455E and F508del /L206W may have milder cystic fibrosis (CF) phenotypes. We compared F508del homozygotes and common compound heterozygotes (F508del and a second pathogenic variant) in adult patients. Nutritional, pulmonary function and glucose homeostasis indices data were collected from the prospective Montreal CF cohort. Two-hundred and three adults with CF having at least one F508del variant were included. Individuals were divided into subgroups: homozygous F508del/F508del (n=149); F508del/621+1G>T (n=17); F508del/711+1G>T (n=11); F508del/A455E (n=12); and F508del/L206W (n=14). Abstract Computational social science is being scrutinised and some concerns have been expressed with regards to the lack of transparency and inclusivity in some of the researches. However, how computational social science can be reformulated to adopt participatory and inclusive practices? And, furthermore, which aspects shall be carefully considered to make possible this reformulation? We present a practical case that addresses the challenge of collectively studying social interactions within community-based mental health care. This study is done by revisiting and revising social science methods such as social dilemmas and game theory and by incorporating the use of digital interfaces to run experiments in-the-field. The research can be framed within the emergent citizen social science or social citizen science where shared practices are still lacking. We have identified five key steps of the research process to be considered to introduce participatory and inclusive practices: research framing, research design, experimental spaces, data sources, and actionable knowledge. Social dilemmas and game theory methods and protocols need to be reconsidered as an experiential activity that enables participants to self-reflect. Co-design dynamics and the building of a working group outside the academia are important to initiate socially robust knowledge co-production. Research results should support evidence-based policies and collective actions put forward by the civil society. The inclusion of underserved groups is discussed as a way forward to new avenues of computational social science jointly with intricate ethical aspects. Finally, the paper also provides some reflections to explore the particularities of a further enhancement of social dimensions in citizen science.

Aim: The relative contributions of insulin secretory defects and possible additional contribution of insulin resistance for the development of cystic fibrosis (CF)‐related diabetes (CFRD) are poorly understood. We aimed to (a) determine which indices of insulin resistance predict progression to CFRD, and (b) to model the relative contributions of insulin secretory function and insulin resistance to predict the risk of CFRD. Materials and Methods: Three hundred and three individuals living with CF underwent a 2‐h oral glucose tolerance test with blood sampling every 30 min at 12–24‐month intervals until they developed CFRD or until the end of follow‐up (up to 15 years). Indices of insulin resistance (e.g. Stumvoll) and insulin secretion were calculated from oral glucose tolerance test glucose and insulin measurements. CFRD‐free survival was assessed by survival analysis. Results: Estimated insulin resistance showed associations with glucose homeostasis and risk of progression to CFRD. The CFRD‐free survival was significantly different between quartiles of insulin resistance (p < 0.0001). When patients were subdivided according to both insulin resistance and insulin secretion (insulinogenic index), CFRD‐free survival was significantly lower in those with combined lowest insulin secretion and highest insulin resistance (Stumvoll) indices (hazard ratio: 11.2; p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference when the same analysis was performed for the nine other indices. Conclusions: Insulin resistance is correlated with glucose homeostasis and the risk of progression to CFRD. Patients combining low insulin secretion and high insulin resistance had the greatest odds of developing CFRD over a 15‐year period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using newly collected data at the city level between 1910 and 1938, this article shows that, after World War I, France experienced an unprecedented expansion in bank branches mostly due to the creation of temporary branches in rural areas. The banking crisis in early 1930s paused this expansion. Nevertheless, the number of bank branches per capita remained four times higher than before the war. Also, the expansion of bank branches was not associated with an increase in the ratio of bank assets to national income. These findings re-evaluate the Great Reversal hypothesis in banking and reveal the disconnection between geographical expansion of banks and standard measures of financial development. Both trends can be reconciled if one considers that banks are multi-product firms – not just lenders – and that competition for new customers is not always associated with greater credit activity. Aims: The prevalence and associations of overweight and obesity in Canadian adult people living with type 1 diabetes (PWT1D) are poorly documented. In a cohort of PWT1D patients, this study assesses (i) overweight and obesity frequencies and associated PWT1D clinicodemographic characteristics, (ii) diabetes characteristics, and (iii) the use of noninsulin adjunctive agents. Materials and Methods: Cross‐sectional analysis of self‐reported data from the BETTER registry: 1091 adult PWT1D (aged 44.4 ± 15.0 years; 32% HbA1c<7% [53 mmol/mol]) classified by BMI classes: underweight combined with normal weight, overweight, or obesity. Bivariate analyses were used to identify associations between BMI classes, diabetes characteristics, complications, and treatments. Results: Overweight and obesity affected 34.6% and 19.8% of participants. Compared to underweight + normal weight, PWT1D with overweight/obesity was associated with male sex, higher age, lower education level, longer diabetes duration, and higher total insulin doses and use of cardiorenal therapies (all p < 0.001). Compared to other PWT1D, those living with obesity reported higher HbA1c (p < 0.05), less frequent hypoglycemia (p < 0.05), more cardiovascular diseases (p < 0.003), retinopathy, neuropathy, depression treatment as well as noninsulin adjunctive agent use (all p < 0.001). Logistic regression showed that living with overweight/obesity was associated with male sex, being treated for cardiorenal therapies, depression, diabetes duration, and total daily insulin doses. Conclusions: Overweight or obesity affects over half of adult PWT1D in the Canadian BETTER registry and is associated with higher HbA1c levels, higher total daily insulin doses, more chronic diabetes complications and noninsulin adjunctive agent use, a worse cardiometabolic profile, and lower hypoglycemia frequency. M-Pesa is one leading example of mobile money services. It reveals the importance of digital financial inclusion (DFI) in countries still largely unbanked, and of institutional factors in shaping DFI. Yet, extant research has not investigated the combined effect of these factors, informal (indigenous knowledge) and formal (regulatory) institutions, on DFI. This study intends to do so leveraging the institutional theory and applying regression techniques to data from 1000 digital-finance users. It reveals different effects of institutional factors across regions. In Europe, strong formal institutions shape DFI. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), weak institutions combined with high indigenous knowledge increase DFI. These findings are crucial for countries’ development, as financial inclusion is considered a key enabler of several SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). They could help adapt financial-inclusion programs by including the indigenous-knowledge component in countries facing weak formal institutions, to maximize their chances of success in fostering development and growth.
