Search

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are known to be dominated by old stellar populations. This has led to the assumption that their gas-rich progenitors lost their gas during their infall in the Milky Way (MW) halo at distant look-back times. Here, we report a discovery of a tiny but robustly detected population of possibly young ($\sim$ 1 Gyr old) and intermediate-mass ($\rm 1.8 M_{\odot} \le M < 3 M_{\odot}$) stars in MW dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This was established on the basis of their positions in color-magnitude diagrams, after filtering out the bulk of the foreground MW using Gaia DR3 proper motions. We have considered the possibility that this population is made of evolved blue stragglers. For Sculptor, it seems unlikely, because 95.5% of its stars are older than 8 Gyr, leading to masses smaller than 0.9 M$_{\odot}$. This would only allow blue straggler masses of less than 1.8 M$_{\odot}$, which is much lower than what we observed. Alternatively, it would require the merger of three turnoff stars, which appears even more unlikely. On the other hand, the recent Gaia proper motion measurements of MW dwarf galaxies infer their low binding energies and large angular momenta, pointing to a more recent, $\le$ 3 Gyr, infall. Although the nature of the newly discovered stars still needs further confirmation, we find that they are consistent with the recent infall of the dwarf galaxies into the MW halo, when star formation occurred from the ram pressurization of their gas content before its removal by the hot Galactic corona. The abundance of this plausibly young population of stars is similar to the expectations drawn from hydrodynamical simulations. We report on simulations of a novel design of optical titanium nitride (TiN)- based Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) in order to improve their response to optical photons. We propose to separate the meander from the substrate to trap hot phonons generated by optical photons, preventing their rapid propagation through the substrate. These phonons would in turn contribute to the breaking of more Cooper pairs, thereby increasing the response of the detector. In our design, the meander is suspended a few hundred nanometers above the substrate. Furthermore, reflective gold (Au) or aluminum (Al)-based layers can be placed under the meander to improve photon coupling in the optical wavelengths.

In this paper, we investigate the quasi-particle (QP) relaxation of strongly disordered superconducting resonators under optical illumination at different bath temperatures with the Rothwarf and Taylor equations and the gap-broadening theory described by the Usadal equation. The analysis is validated with various single-photon responses of Titanium Nitride (TiN) microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) under pulsed 405~nm laser illumination. The QP relaxation in TiN is dominated by QPs with energy below the energy gap smeared by the disorder, and its duration is still inversely proportional to the QP density. The QP lifetime versus temperature can be fitted. The relaxation of the resonator can be further modeled with QP diffusion. The fitted QP diffusion coefficient of TiN is significantly smaller than expected. Planets orbiting members of open or globular clusters offer a great opportunity to study exoplanet populations systematically as stars within clusters provide a mostly homogeneous sample at least in chemical composition and stellar age. However, even though there have been coordinated efforts to search for exoplanets in stellar clusters, only a small number of planets has been detected. One successful example is the seven-year radial velocity (RV) survey "Search for giant planets in M67" of 88 stars in the open cluster M67 which led to the discovery of five giant planets, including three close-in ($P < 10$ days) hot-Jupiters. In this work, we continue and extend the observation of stars in M67 with the aim to search for additional planets. We conducted spectroscopic observations with the HPF, HARPS, HARPS-North, and SOPHIE spectrographs of 11 stars in M67. Six of our targets showed a variation or long-term trends in their RV during the original survey, while the other five were not observed in the original sample bringing the total number of stars to 93. An analysis of the radial velocities revealed one additional planet around the turn-off point star S1429 and gave solutions for the orbits of stellar companions around S2207 and YBP2018. S1429 b is a warm Jupiter on a likely circular orbit with a period of $77.48_{-0.19}^{+0.18}$ days and a minimum mass $\text{M} \sin i = 1.80 \pm 0.2$ M$_\text{J}$. We update the hot-Jupiter occurrence rate in M67 to include the five new stars, deriving $4.2_{-2.3}^{+4.1} \%$ when considering all stars, and $5.4_{-3.0}^{+5.1} \%$ if binary star systems are removed., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures. SpectroPhotometric Imaging in Astronomy with Kinetic Inductance Detectors (SPIAKID) aims at designing, building, and deploying on the sky a spectrophotometric imager based on microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) in the optical and near-infrared bands. MKIDs show a fast response and the ability to resolve photon energy compared to the conventional Charge-coupled Devices (CCDs). In this paper, we present the design and simulation of the MKID arrays for SPIAKID. The detectors consist of four arrays with each array of 20,000 lumped-element pixels, and each array will be read with 10 readout lines. %The array is designed to have resonances between 4-8GHz with a frequency spacing of 2 MHz and a coupling quality factor (Qc) of about 50000. The meander material of the resonators is trilayer TiN/Ti/TiN to have better uniformity of the critical temperature across the array. We also present the measurement result for a test array with $30\times30$ pixels which is a subset of the designed 2000-pixel array to verify the design and fabrication. The current measured best energy resolving power $R = E/\Delta E$ is 2.4 at $\lambda = 405~$nm and the current medium R is around 1.7. We study how structural properties of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies are linked to their orbits in the Milky Way halo. From the inner to the outer halo, orbital energy increases and stellar-systems gradually move out of internal equilibrium: in the inner halo, high-surface brightness globular clusters are at pseudo-equilibrium, while further away, low-surface brightness clusters and dwarfs appear more tidally disturbed. Dwarf galaxies are the latest to arrive into the halo as indicated by their large orbital energies and pericenters, and have no time for more than one orbit. Their (gas-rich) progenitors likely lost their gas during their recent arrival in the Galactic halo. If dwarfs are at equilibrium with their dark matter (DM) content, the DM density should anti-correlate with pericenter. However, the transformation of DM dominated dwarfs from gas-rich rotation-supported into gas-poor dispersion-supported systems is unlikely accomplished during a single orbit. We suggest instead that the above anti-correlation is brought by the combination of ram-pressure stripping and of Galactic tidal shocks. Recent gas removal leads to an expansion of their stellar content caused by the associated gravity loss, making them sufficiently fragile to be transformed near pericenter passage. Out of equilibrium dwarfs would explain the observed anti-correlation of kinematics-based DM density with pericenter without invoking DM density itself, questioning its previous estimates. Ram-pressure stripping and tidal shocks may contribute to the dwarf velocity dispersion excess. We used the spectro-photometric information of ~219 million stars from Gaia's DR3 to calculate synthetic, narrow-band, metallicity-sensitive CaHK magnitudes that mimic the observations of the Pristine survey, a survey of photometric metallicities of Milky Way (MW) stars that has been mapping >6,500 deg^2 of the northern sky with CFHT since 2015. These synthetic magnitudes were used for an absolute recalibration of the deeper Pristine photometry and, combined with broadband Gaia information, synthetic and Pristine CaHK magnitudes were used to estimate photometric metallicities over the whole sky. The resulting metallicity catalogue is accurate down to [Fe/H]~-3.5 and is particularly suited for the exploration of the metal-poor MW ([Fe/H]<-1.0). We make available here the catalogue of synthetic CaHK_syn magnitudes for all stars with BP/RP information in Gaia DR3, as well as an associated catalogue of more than ~30 million photometric metallicities for high S/N FGK stars. This paper further provides the first public data release of the Pristine catalogue in the form of higher quality recalibrated Pristine CaHK magnitudes and photometric metallicities for all stars in common with the BP/RP spectro-photometric information in Gaia DR3. When available, the much deeper Pristine data greatly enhance the quality of the derived metallicities, in particular at the faint end of the catalogue (G_BP > 16). Combined, both photometric metallicity catalogues include more than two million metal-poor star candidates ([Fe/H]_phot<-1.0) as well as more than 200,000 and ~8,000 very and extremely metal-poor candidates ([Fe/H]_phot<-2.0 and <-3.0, respectively). Finally, we show that these metallicity catalogues can be used efficiently, among other applications to hunt for the most metal-poor stars, and to study how the structure of the MW varies with metallicity., Comment: 31 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Halo inhabitants are individual stars, stellar streams, star and globular clusters, and dwarf galaxies. Here we compare the two last categories that include objects of similar stellar mass, which are often studied as self-dynamical equilibrium systems. We discover that the half-light radius of globular clusters depends on their orbital pericenter and total energy, and that Milky Way (MW) tides may explain the observed correlation. We also suggest that the accretion epoch of stellar systems in the MW halo can be calibrated by the total orbital energy, and that such a relation is due to both the mass growth of the MW and dynamical friction affecting mostly satellites with numerous orbits. This calibration starts from the bulge, to Kraken, Gaia Sausage Enceladus, Sagittarius stellar systems, and finally to the new coming dwarfs, either or not linked to the vast-polar structure. The most eccentric globular clusters and dwarfs have their half-light radius scaling as the inverse of their binding energy, and this over more than two decades. This means that earlier arriving satellites are smaller due to the tidal effects of the MW. Therefore, most halo inhabitants appear to have their structural parameters shaped by MW tides and also by ram-pressure for the most recent arrivals, the dwarf galaxies. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. We present metallicity and radial velocity for 450 bonafide members of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy, measured from high resolution (R~18000) FLAMES@VLT spectra. The targets were carefully selected (a) to sample the core of the main body of Sgr dSph while avoiding contamination from the central stellar nucleus, and (b) to prevent any bias on the metallicity distribution, by selecting targets based on their Gaia parallax and proper motions. All the targets selected in this way were confirmed as radial velocity members. We used this sample to derive the first metallicity distribution of the core of the Sgr dSph virtually unaffected by metallicity biases. The observed distribution ranges from [Fe/H]~ -2.3 to [Fe/H]~ 0.0, with a strong, symmetric and relatively narrow peak around [Fe/H]~ -0.5 and a weak, extended metal-poor tail, with only 13.8 +/- 1.9% of the stars having [Fe/H]< -1.0. We confirm previous evidence of correlations between chemical and kinematical properties of stars in the core of Sgr. In our sample stars with [Fe/H]>= -0.6 display a lower velocity dispersion and a higher rotation amplitude than those with [Fe/H]< -0.6, confirming previous suggestions of a disk/halo structure for the progenitor of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted by A&A

WEAVE is the new wide-field spectroscopy facility for the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, Spain. Its fibre positioner is essential for the accurate placement of the spectrograph's 960 fibre multiplex. We provide an overview of the recent maintenance, flexure modifications, and calibration measurements conducted at the observatory prior to the final top-end assembly. This work ensures that we have a complete understanding of the positioner's behaviour as it changes orientation during observations. All fibre systems have been inspected and repaired, and the tumbler structure contains new clamps to stiffen both the internal beam and the retractor support disk onto which the field plates attach. WEAVE is the new wide-field spectroscopic facility for the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, Spain. Its fibre positioner is essential for the accurate placement of the spectrograph's ~960-fibre multiplex. To maximise the assignment of its optical fibres, WEAVE uses a simulated annealing algorithm called Configure, which allocates the fibres to targets in the field of view. We have conducted an analysis of the algorithm's behaviour using a subset of mid-tier WEAVE-LOFAR fields, and adjusted the priority assignment algorithm to optimise the total fibres assigned per field, and the assignment of fibres to the higher priority science targets. To improve the optical coupling in Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), we investigate the use of a reflective plate beneath the meandered absorber. We designed, fabricated and characterized high-Q factors TiN-based MKIDs on sapphire operating at optical wavelengths with a Au/Nb reflective thin bilayer below the meander. The reflector is set at a quarter-wave distance from the meander using a transparent Al$_2$O$_3$ dielectric layer to reach the peak photon absorption. Aims. The Chemical Evolution of R-process Elements in Stars (CERES) project aims to provide a homogeneous analysis of a sample of metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-1.5). We present the stellar parameters and the chemical abundances of elements up to Zr for a sample of 52 giant stars.Methods. We relied on a sample of high signal-to-noise UVES spectra. We determined stellar parameters from Gaia photometry and parallaxes. Chemical abundances were derived using spectrum synthesis and model atmospheres.Results. We determined chemical abundances of 26 species of 18 elements: Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, and Zr. For several stars, we were able to measure both neutral and ionised species, including Si, Sc, Mn, and Zr. We have roughly doubled the number of measurements of Cu for stars at [Fe/H] <= -2.5. The homogeneity of the sample made it possible to highlight the presence of two Zn-rich stars ([Zn/Fe]~+0.7), one r-rich and the other r-poor. We report the existence of two branches in the [Zn/Fe] versus [Ni/Fe] plane and suggest that the high [Zn/Fe] branch is the result of hypernova nucleosynthesis. We discovered two stars with peculiar light neutron-capture abundance patterns: CES1237+1922 (also known as BS 16085-0050), which is ~1 dex underabundant in Sr, Y, and Zr with respect to the other stars in the sample, and CES2250-4057 (also known as HE 2247-4113), which shows a ~1 dex overabundance of Sr with respect to Y and Zr.Conclusions. The high quality of our dataset allowed us to measure hardly detectable ions. This can provide guidance in the development of line formation computations that take deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium and hydrodynamical effects into account.

The recently discovered C-19 stellar stream is a collection of kinematically associated metal-poor stars in the halo of the Milky Way lacking an obvious progenitor. The stream spans an arc of ~15 degrees in the sky, and orbit-fitting suggests an apocentric distance of ~20 kpc and a pericentre of ~10 kpc. The narrow metallicity dispersion of stars with available spectra, together with light element abundance variations, suggests a globular cluster (GC) origin. The observed metallicity ([Fe/H] ~ -3.4), however, is much lower than that of any known GC. In addition, the width and velocity dispersion of the stream are similar to those expected from disrupting dwarf galaxies, and substantially larger than the tidal debris of GCs able to disrupt on C-19's orbit. We propose here an unconventional model where the C-19 progenitor is a dark matter-dominated stellar system with GC-like abundance patterns. We use N-body simulations to show that the tidal disruption of a ~100 pc King-model stellar component embedded in a ~20 km/s cuspy cold dark matter halo yields debris consistent with C-19's observed width and velocity dispersion. The stellar component of the progenitor is fully disrupted, and is spread over two distinct streams; one corresponding to C-19 and another possibly hiding behind the Galactic plane. If such companion stream were found, it would suggest that dark matter-dominated dwarfs may also develop GC-like enrichment patterns, a finding that would inform our theoretical understanding of the formation of multiple populations in GCs and dwarf galaxies alike., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. minor edits to match accepted version

The C-19 stream is the most metal poor stellar system ever discovered, with a mean metallicity $[Fe/H] = -3.38\pm0.06$. Its low metallicity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]}$ $<$ 0.18 at the 95\% confidence level) as well as variations in sodium abundances strongly suggest a globular cluster origin. In this work, we use VLT/UVES spectra of seven C-19 stars to derive more precise velocity measurements for member stars, and to identify two new members with radial velocities and metallicities consistent with the stream's properties. One of these new member stars is located 30 $\deg$ away from the previously identified body of C-19, implying that the stream is significantly more extended than previously known and that more members likely await discovery. In the main part of C-19, we measure a radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_v$ = 6.2$^{+2.0}_{-1.4}$ km s$^{-1}$ from nine members, and a stream width of 0.56$\deg\pm0.08\deg$, equivalent to $\sim$158 pc at a heliocentric distance of 18 kpc. These confirm that C-19 is comparatively hotter, dynamically, than other known globular cluster streams and shares the properties of faint dwarf galaxy streams. On the other hand, the variations in the Na abundances of the three newly observed bright member stars, the variations in Mg and Al for two of them, and the normal Ba abundance of the one star where it can be measured provide further evidence for a globular cluster origin. We use the photometric metallicities provided by the panoramic Pristine survey to study the veracity and derive the metallicities of the numerous stellar streams found by the application of the STREAMFINDER algorithm to the Gaia EDR3 data. All 26 streams present in Pristine show a clear metallicity distribution function, which provides an independent check of the reality of these structures, supporting the reliability of STREAMFINDER in finding streams and the power of Pristine to measure precise metallicities. We further present 6 candidate structures with coherent phase-space and metallicity signals that are very likely streams. The majority of studied streams are very metal-poor (14 structures with [Fe/H]<-2.0) and include 3 systems with [Fe/H]<-2.9 (C-11, C-19, and C-20). These streams could be the closest debris of low-luminosity dwarf galaxies or may have originated from globular clusters of significantly lower metallicity than any known current Milky Way globular cluster. Our study shows that the promise of the Gaia data for Galactic Archeology studies can be substantially strengthened by quality photometric metallicities, allowing us to peer back into the earliest epochs of the formation of our Galaxy and its stellar halo constituents., Comment: 25 pages, 29 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Stellar ejecta gradually enrich the gas out of which subsequent stars form, making the least chemically enriched stellar systems direct fossils of structures formed in the early universe. Although a few hundred stars with metal content below one thousandth of the solar iron content are known in the Galaxy, none of them inhabit globular clusters, some of the oldest known stellar structures. These show metal content of at least ~0.2 percent of the solar metallicity ([Fe/H] > -2.7). This metallicity floor appears universal and it has been proposed that proto-galaxies that merge into the galaxies we observe today were simply not massive enough to form clusters that survived to the present day. Here, we report the discovery of a stellar stream, C-19, whose metallicity is less than 0.05 per cent the solar metallicity ([Fe/H]=-3.38 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.20 (syst.)). The low metallicity dispersion and the chemical abundances of the C-19 stars show that this stream is the tidal remnant of the most metal-poor globular cluster ever discovered, and significantly below the purported metallicity floor: clusters with significantly lower metallicities than observed today existed in the past and contributed their stars to the Milky Way halo., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. We analyse high resolution spectra of two classical novae that exploded in the Small Magellanic Cloud. $^7$Be II resonance transitions are detected in both ASASSN-19qv and ASASSN-20ni novae. This is the first detection outside the Galaxy and confirms that thermo-nuclear runaway reactions, leading to the $^7$Be formation, are effective also in the low metallicity regime, characteristic of the SMC. Derived yields are of N($^7$Be=$^7$Li)/N(H) = (5.3 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ which are a factor 4 lower than the typical values of the Galaxy. Inspection of two historical novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud observed with IUE in 1991 and 1992 showed also the possible presence of $^7$Be and similar yields. For an ejecta of $M_{H,ej} =$ 10$^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$, the amount of $^7$Li produced is of $M_{^7 Li} = (3.7 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-10}$ M$_{\odot}$ per nova event. Detailed chemical evolutionary model for the SMC shows that novae could have made an amount of lithium in the SMC corresponding to a fractional abundance of A(Li) $\approx$ 2.6. Therefore, it is argued that a comparison with the abundance of Li in the SMC, as measured by its interstellar medium, could effectively constrain the amount of the initial abundance of primordial Li, which is currently controversial., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables. We combine the power of two stream-searching tools, STREAMFINDER and StarGO applied to the Gaia EDR3 data, to detect stellar debris belonging to the Cetus stream system that forms a complex, nearly polar structure around the Milky Way. In this work, we find the southern extensions of the northern Cetus stream as the Palca stream and a new southern stream, which overlap on the sky but have different distances. These two stream wraps extend over more than $\sim100\deg$ on the sky ($-60\deg<\delta<+40\deg$). The current N-body model of the system reproduces both wraps in the trailing arm. We also show that the Cetus system is confidently associated with the Triangulum/Pisces, Willka Yaku, and the recently discovered C-20 streams. The association with the ATLAS-Aliqa Uma stream is much weaker. All of these stellar debris are very metal-poor, comparable to the average metallicity of the southern Cetus stream with [Fe/H] = $-2.17\pm0.2$. The estimated stellar mass of the Cetus progenitor is at least $10^{5.6}\rm\,M_\odot$, compatible with Ursa Minor or Draco dwarf galaxies. The associated globular cluster with similar stellar mass, NGC 5824 very possibly was accreted in the same group infall. The multi-wrap Cetus stream is a perfect example of a dwarf galaxy that has undergone several periods of stripping, leaving behind debris at multiple locations in the halo. The full characterization of such systems is crucial to unravel the assembly history of the Milky Way and, as importantly, to provide nearby fossils to study ancient low-mass dwarf galaxies., Comment: accepted to ApJ. Following optical pulses ($\lambda=405~\text{nm}$) on titanium nitride (TiN) Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) cooled down at temperatures $T \le T_c / 20$ ($T_c \simeq 4.6~\text{K}$), we observe a large phase-response highlighting two different modes simultaneously that are nevertheless related. The first corresponds to the well-known transition of cooper-pair breaking into quasi-particles which produces a known phase response. This is immediately followed by a large inverse response lasting several hundreds of microseconds to several milliseconds depending on the temperature. We propose to model this inverse pulse as the thermal perturbation of the superconductor and interaction with two level system (TLS) that reduces the dielectric constant which in turns modify the capacitance and therefore the resonance frequency. In the search of a sample of metal-poor bright giants using Str{\"o}mgren photometry, we serendipitously found a sample of 26 young (ages younger than 1 Gyr) metal-rich giants, some of which have high rotational velocities.We determined the chemical composition and rotational velocities of these stars in order to compare them with predictions from stellar evolution models. These stars where of spectral type A to B when on the main sequence, and we therefore wished to compare their abundance pattern to that of main-sequence A and B stars.Stellar masses were derived by comparison of the position of the stars in the colour-magnitude diagram with theoretical evolutionary tracks. These masses, together with Gaia photometry and parallaxes, were used to derive the stellar parameters. We used spectrum synthesis and model atmospheres to determine chemical abundances for 16 elements (C, N, O, Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Sr, Y, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) and rotational velocities.The age-metallicity degeneracy can affect photometric metallicity calibrations. We identify 15 stars as likely binary stars. All stars are in prograde motion around the Galactic centre and belong to the thin-disc population. All but one of the sample stars present low [C/Fe] and high [N/Fe] ratios together with constant [(C+N+O)/Fe], suggesting that they have undergone CNO processing and first dredge-up. Here we show that precise Gaia EDR3 proper motions have provided robust estimates of 3D velocities, angular momentum and total energy for 40 Milky Way dwarfs. The results are statistically robust and are independent of the Milky Way mass profile. Dwarfs do not behave like long-lived satellites of the Milky Way because of their excessively large velocities, angular momenta, and total energies. Comparing them to other MW halo population, we find that many are at first passage, $\le$ 2 Gyr ago, i.e., more recently than the passage of Sagittarius, $\sim$ 4-5 Gyr ago. We suggest that this is in agreement with the stellar populations of all dwarfs, for which we find that a small fraction of young stars cannot be excluded. We also find that dwarf radial velocities contribute too little to their kinetic energy when compared to satellite systems with motions only regulated by gravity, and some other mechanism must be at work such as ram pressure. The latter may have preferentially reduced radial velocities when dwarf progenitors entered the halo until they lost their gas. It could also explain why most dwarfs lie near their pericenter. WEAVE is the new wide-field spectroscopy facility for the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope at La Palma, Spain. Its fibre positioner is essential for the accurate placement of the spectrograph's 960 fibre multiplex. We provide an overview of the final assembly and metrology of the fibre positioner, and results of lab commissioning of its robot gantries. A completely new z-gantry for each positioner robot was acquired, with measurements showing a marked improvement in positioning repeatability. We also present the first results of the configuration software testing, and discuss the metrology procedures that must be repeated after the positioner's arrival at the observatory.

We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software also finds very long tidal tails associated with the 15 globular clusters NGC 288, NGC 1261, NGC 1851, NGC 2298, NGC 2808, NGC 3201, M 68, $\omega$Cen, NGC 5466, Palomar 5, M 5, NGC 6101, M 92, NGC 6397 and NGC 7089. These stellar streams will be used in subsequent contributions in this series to chart the properties of the Galactic acceleration field on $\sim$ 100 pc to $\sim$ 100 kpc scales., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication at ApJ. Globular clusters (GCs) are important donors to the build-up of the Milky Way (MW) stellar halo, having contributed at the ten percent level over the Galactic history. Stars that originated from the second generation of dissolved or dissolving clusters can be readily identified via distinct light-element signatures such as enhanced N and Na and simultaneously depleted C and O abundances. In this paper we present an extensive chemical abundance analysis of the halo star J110842, which was previously kinematically associated with the massive MW GC $\omega$ Centauri ($\omega$Cen), and we discuss viable scenarios from escape to encounter. Based on a high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectrum of this star using the UVES spectrograph, we were able to measure 33 species of 31 elements across all nucleosynthetic channels. The star's low metallicity of [FeII/H]=$-2.10$$\pm$0.02(stat.)$\pm0.07$(sys.) dex places it in the lower sixth percentile of $\omega$Cen's metallicity distribution. We find that all of the heavier-element abundances, from $\alpha$- and Fe-peak elements to neutron-capture elements are closely compatible with $\omega$Cen's broad abundance distribution. However, given the major overlap of this object's abundances with the bulk of all of the MW components, this does not allow for a clear-cut distinction of the star's origin. In contrast, our measurements of an enhancement in CN and its position on the Na-strong locus of the Na-O anticorrelation render it conceivable that it originally formed as a second-generation GC star, lending support to a former association of this halo star with the massive GC $\omega$Cen., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies are the tiniest observed galaxies and are currently associated with the largest fractions of dark matter, which is revealed by their too large velocity dispersions. However, most of them are found near their orbital pericenters. This leads to a very low probability, P = 2 $10^{-7}$, that they could be long-lived satellites such as sub-halos predicted by cosmological simulations. Their proximity to their pericenters suggests instead that they are affected by tidal shocks, which provide sufficient kinematic energy to explain their high velocity dispersions. The nature of Milky Way dwarf spheroidals (MW dSphs) has been questioned, in particular whether they are dominated by dark matter (DM). Here we investigate an alternative scenario, for which tidal shocks are exerted by the MW to DM-free dSphs after a first infall of their gas-rich progenitors, and for which theoretical calculations have been verified by pure N-body simulations. Whether or not the dSphs are on their first infall cannot be resolved on the sole basis of their star formation history. In fact, gas removal may cause complex gravitational instabilities and near-pericenter passages can give rise to tidal disruptive processes. Advanced precision with the Gaia satellite in determining both their past orbital motions and the MW velocity curve is, however, providing crucial results. First, tidal shocks explain why DM-free dSphs are found preferentially near their pericenter, where they are in a destructive process, while their chance to be long-lived satellites is associated with a very low probability P~ 2 10^-7, which is at odds with the current DM-dominated dSph scenario. Second, most dSph binding energies are consistent with a first infall. Third, the MW tidal shocks that predict the observed dSph velocity dispersions are themselves predicted in amplitude by the most accurate MW velocity curve. Fourth, tidal shocks accurately predict the forces or accelerations exerted at half-light radius of dSphs, including the MW and the Magellanic System gravitational attractions. Following the recent detection of 7Be in the outburst spectra of Classical Novae we report the search for this isotope in the outbursts of four recent bright novae by means of high resolution UVES observations. The 7BeII 313.0583, 313.1228 nm doublet resonance lines are detected in the high velocity components of Nova Mus 2018 and ASASSN-18fv during outburst. On the other hand 7BeII is neither detected in ASASSN-17hx and possibly nor in Nova Cir 2018, therefore showing that the 7BeII is not always ejected in the thermonuclear runaway. Taking into account the 7Be decay we find X(7Be)/X(H) approx 1.5 x10 ^{-5} and 2.2 x 10 ^{-5} in Nova Mus 2018 and ASASSN-18fv, respectively. A value of 7Be/H about 2 x10 ^{-5} is found in 5 out of the 7 extant measurements and it might be considered as a typical 7Be yield for novae. However, this value is almost one order of magnitude larger than predicted by current theoretical models. We argue that the variety of high 7Be/H abundances could be originated in a higher than solar content of 3He in the donor star. The cases with 7Be not detected might be related to a small mass of the WD or to relatively little mixing with the core material of the WD. The 7Be /H, or 7Li/H, abundance is about 4 dex above meteoritic thus confirming the novae as the main sources of 7Li in the Milky Way., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted MNRAS

A chemo-dynamical analysis of 115 metal-poor candidate stars selected from the narrow-band Pristine photometric survey is presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDoNS spectroscopy. We have discover 28 new bright (V < 15) stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 and 5 with [Fe/H]<-3.0 for success rates of 40% (28/70) and 19% (5/27), respectively. A detailed model atmospheres analysis is carried out for the 28 new metal-poor stars. Stellar parameters were determined from SDSS photometric colours, Gaia DR2 parallaxes, MESA/MIST stellar isochrones, and the initial Pristine survey metallicities, following a Bayesian inference method. Chemical abundances are determined for 10 elements (Na, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, Ba). Most stars show chemical abundance patterns that are similar to the normal metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo; however, we also report the discoveries of a new r-process rich star, a new CEMP-s candidate with [Y/Ba]>0, and a metal-poor star with very low [Mg/Fe]. The kinematics and orbits for all of the highly probable metal-poor candidates are determined by combining our precision radial velocities with Gaia DR2 proper motions. Some stars show unusual kinematics for their chemistries, including planar orbits, unbound orbits, and highly elliptical orbits that plunge deeply into the Galactic bulge (Rperi < 0.5 kpc); also, eight stars have orbital energies and actions consistent with the Gaia-Enceladus accretion event. We present the results of a 3-year long, medium-resolution spectroscopic campaign aimed at identifying very metal-poor stars from candidates selected with the CaHK, metallicity-sensitive Pristine survey. The catalogue consists of a total of 1007 stars, and includes 146 rediscoveries of metal-poor stars already presented in previous surveys, 707 new very metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < -2.0, and 95 new extremely metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < -3.0. We provide a spectroscopic [Fe/H] for every star in the catalogue, and [C/Fe] measurements for a subset of the stars (10% with [Fe/H] < -3 and 24% with -3 < [Fe/H] < -2) for which a carbon determination is possible, contingent mainly on the carbon abundance, effective temperature and S/N of the stellar spectra. We find an average carbon enhancement fraction ([C/Fe] >= +0.7) of 41 +- 4% for stars with -3 < [Fe/H] < -2 and 58 +- 14% for stars with [Fe/H] < -3, and report updated success rates for the Pristine survey of 56 % and 23 % to recover stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5 and [Fe/H] < -3, respectively. MICADO will enable the ELT to perform diffraction limited near-infrared observations at first light. The instrument's capabilities focus on imaging (including astrometric and high contrast) as well as single object spectroscopy. The early Universe presented a star formation environment that was almost devoid of heavy elements. The lowest metallicity stars thus provide a unique window into the earliest Galactic stages, but are exceedingly rare and difficult to find. Here we present the discovery of an ultra-metal-poor star, Pristine_221.8781+9.7844, using narrow-band Ca H&K photometry from the Pristine survey. Follow-up medium and high-resolution spectroscopy confirms the ultra-metal-poor nature of Pristine_221.8781+9.7844 ([Fe/H] = -4.66 +/- 0.13 in 1D LTE) with an enhancement of 0.3-0.4 dex in alpha-elements relative to Fe, and an unusually low carbon abundance. We derive an upper limit of A(C) = 5.6, well below typical A(C) values for such ultra metal-poor stars. This makes Pristine_221.8781+9.7844 one of the most metal-poor stars; in fact, it is very similar to the most metal-poor star known (SDSS J102915+172927). The existence of a class of ultra metal-poor stars with low(er) carbon abundances suggest that there must have been several formation channels in the early Universe through which long-lived, low-mass stars were formed., Comment: Re-submitted to MNRAS after minor revisions

A probable carbon enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) star, Pisces II 10694, was discovered recently in the ultra-faint (UFD) galaxy Pisces II. This galaxy is supposed to be very old, suspected to include dark matter, and likely formed the bulk of its stars before the reionisation of the Universe. New abundances have been obtained from observations of Pisces II 10694 at the Kueyen ESO VLT telescope, using the high-efficiency spectrograph: X-Shooter. We found that Pisces II 10694 is a CEMP-no star with [Fe/H]=-2.60 dex. Careful measurements of the CH and C2 bands confirm the enhancement of the C abundance ([C/Fe]=+1.23). This cool giant has very probably undergone extra mixing and thus its original C abundance could be even higher. Nitrogen, O, Na, and Mg are also strongly enhanced, but from Ca to Ni the ratios [X/Fe] are similar to those observed in classical galactic very metal-poor stars. With its low Ba abundance ([Ba/Fe] =-1.10 dex) Pisces II 10694 is a CEMP-no star. No variation in the radial velocity could be detected between the years 2015 and 2017. The pattern of the elements abundance has a shape similar to the pattern found in galactic CEMP-no stars like CS 22949-037 ([Fe/H]=-4.0) or SDSS J1349+1407 ([Fe/H]=-3.6). The existence of a CEMP-no star in the UFD galaxy Pisc II suggests that this small galaxy likely hosted zero-metallicity stars. This is consistent with theoretical predictions of cosmological models supporting the idea that UFD galaxies are the living fossils of the first star-forming systems., Comment: Accepted to A&A , 9 pages 8 figures

We measured new abundances of so-called light neutron-capture of first peak elements using local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) 1D analysis; this analysis resulted in a sample of 11 very metal-poor stars, from [Fe/H]=-2.5 to [Fe/H]=-3.4, and one carbon-rich star, CS 22949-037 with [Fe/H]=-4.0. The abundances were compared to those observed in two classical metal-poor stars: the typical r-rich star CS 31082-001 ([Eu/Fe] > +1.0) and the r-poor star HD 122563 ([Eu/Fe] < 0.0), which are known to present a strong enrichment of the first peak neutron-capture elements relative to the second peak. Within the first peak, the abundances are well correlated in analogy to the well-known correlation inside the abundances of the second-peak elements. In contrast, there is no correlation between any first peak element with any second peak element. We show that the scatter of the ratio of the first peak abundance over second peak abundance increases when the mean abundance of the second peak elements decreases from r-rich to r-poor stars. We found two new r-poor stars that are very similar to HD 122563. A third r-poor star, CS 22897-008, is even more extreme; this star shows the most extreme example of first peak elements enrichment to date. On the contrary, another r-poor star (BD-18 5550) has a pattern of first peak elements that is similar to the typical r-rich stars CS 31082-001, however this star has some Mo enrichment. The distribution of the neutron-capture elements in our very metal-poor stars can be understood as the combination of at least two mechanisms: one that enriches the forming stars cloud homogeneously through the main r-process and leads to an element pattern similar to the r-rich stars, such as CS 31082-001; and another that forms mainly lighter, first peak elements., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Sagittarius (Sgr) is a massive disrupted dwarf spheroidal galaxy in the Milky Way halo that has undergone several stripping events. Previous chemical studies were restricted mainly to a few, metal- rich ([Fe/H]~ -1) stars that suggested a top-light initial mass function (IMF). Here we present the first high-resolution, very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-1 to -3) sample of 13 giant stars in the main body of Sgr. We derive abundances of 13 elements namely C, Ca, Co, Fe, Sr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Eu, Dy, Pb, and Th which challenge the interpretation based on previous studies. Our abundances from Sgr mimic those of the metal-poor halo and our most metal-poor star ([Fe/H]~ -3) indicates a pure r-process pollution. Abundances of Sr, Pb, and Th are presented for the first time in Sgr, allowing for age determination using nuclear cosmochronology. We calculate ages of 9$\pm$2.5 Gyr. Most of the sample stars have been enriched by a range of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with masses between 1.3 and 5 M$_{\odot}$. Sgr J190651.47-320147.23 shows a large overabundance of Pb (2.05dex) and a peculiar abundance pattern best fit by a 3 M$_{\odot}$ AGB star. Based on star-to-star scatter and observed abundance patterns a mixture of low- and high-mass AGB stars and supernovae (15-25 M$_{\odot}$) are necessary to explain these patterns. The high level (0.29$\pm$0.05 dex) of Ca indicates that massive supernovae must have existed and polluted the early ISM of Sgr before it lost its gas. We present the chemical distribution of the Milky Way, based on 2,900$\, {\rm deg^2}$ of $u$-band photometry taken as part of the Canada-France Imaging Survey. When complete, this survey will cover 10,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$ of the Northern sky. By combing the CFHT $u$-band photometry together with SDSS and Pan-STARRS $g,r,$ and $i$, we demonstrate that we are able to measure reliably the metallicities of individual stars to $\sim 0.2$ dex, and hence additionally obtain good photometric distance estimates. This survey thus permits the measurement of metallicities and distances of the dominant main-sequence population out to approximately 30 kpc, and provides much higher number of stars at large extraplanar distances than have been available from previous surveys. We develop a non-parametric distance-metallicity decomposition algorithm and apply it to the sky at $30\deg < |b| < 70\deg$ and to the North Galactic Cap. We find that the metallicity-distance distribution is well-represented by three populations whose metallicity distributions do not vary significantly with vertical height above the disk. As traced in main-sequence stars, the stellar halo component shows a vertical density profile that is close to exponential, with a scale height of around 3 kpc. This may indicate that the inner halo was formed partly from disk stars ejected in an ancient minor merger., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) will map the northern high Galactic latitude sky in the $u$-band ("CFIS-u", 10,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$) and in the $r$-band ("CFIS-r", 5,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$), enabling a host of stand-alone science investigations, and providing some of the ground-based data necessary for photometric redshift determination for the Euclid mission. In this first contribution we present the $u$-band component of the survey, describe the observational strategy, and discuss some first highlight results, based on approximately one third of the final area. We show that the Galactic anticenter structure is distributed continuously along the line of sight, out to beyond 20 kpc, and possesses a metallicity distribution that is essentially identical to that of the outer disk sampled by APOGEE. This suggests that it is probably a buckled disk of old metal-rich stars, rather than a stream or a flare. We also discuss the future potential for CFIS-u in discovering star-forming dwarf galaxies around the Local Group, the characterization of the white dwarf and blue straggler population of the Milky Way, as well as its sensitivity to low-surface brightness structures in external galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Studies of the isotopic composition of magnesium in cool stars have so far relied upon the use of one-dimensional (1D) model atmospheres. Since the isotopic ratios derived are based on asymmetries of optical MgH lines, it is important to test the impact from other effects affecting line asymmetries, like stellar convection. Here, we present a theoretical investigation of the effects of including self-consistent modeling of convection. Using spectral syntheses based on 3D hydrodynamical CO$^5$BOLD models of dwarfs (4000K$\lesssim T_\mathrm{eff}\lesssim5160K$, $4.0\leq$log(g)$\leq4.5$, $-3.0\leq[\mathrm{Fe/H}]\leq-1.0$) and giants ($T_\mathrm{eff}\sim4000$K, log(g)$=1.5$, $-3.0\leq[\mathrm{Fe/H}]\leq-1.0$), we perform a detailed analysis comparing 3D and 1D syntheses. We describe the impact on the formation and behavior of MgH lines from using 3D models, and perform a qualitative assessment of the systematics introduced by the use of 1D syntheses. Using 3D model atmospheres significantly affect the strength of the MgH lines, especially in dwarfs, with 1D syntheses requiring an abundance correction of up to +0.69 dex largest for our 5000K models. The corrections are correlated with $T_\mathrm{eff}$ and are also affected by the metallicity. The shape of the strong $^{24}$MgH component in the 3D syntheses is poorly reproduced in 1D. This results in 1D syntheses underestimating $^{25}$MgH by up to $\sim5$ percentage points and overestimating $^{24}$MgH by a similar amount for dwarfs. This discrepancy increases with decreasing metallicity. $^{26}$MgH is recovered relatively well, with the largest difference being $\sim2$ percentage points. We present the Pristine survey, a new narrow-band photometric survey focused on the metallicity-sensitive Ca H & K lines and conducted in the northern hemisphere with the wide-field imager MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). This paper reviews our overall survey strategy and discusses the data processing and metallicity calibration. Additionally we review the application of these data to the main aims of the survey, which are to gather a large sample of the most metal-poor stars in the Galaxy, to further characterise the faintest Milky Way satellites, and to map the (metal-poor) substructure in the Galactic halo. The current Pristine footprint comprises over 1,000 deg2 in the Galactic halo ranging from b~30 to 78 and covers many known stellar substructures. We demonstrate that, for SDSS stellar objects, we can calibrate the photometry at the 0.02-magnitude level. The comparison with existing spectroscopic metallicities from SDSS/SEGUE and LAMOST shows that, when combined with SDSS broad-band g and i photometry, we can use the CaHK photometry to infer photometric metallicities with an accuracy of ~0.2 dex from [Fe/H]=-0.5 down to the extremely metal-poor regime ([Fe/H]<-3.0). After the removal of various contaminants, we can efficiently select metal-poor stars and build a very complete sample with high purity. The success rate of uncovering [Fe/H]SEGUE<-3.0 stars among [Fe/H]Pristine<-3.0 selected stars is 24% and 85% of the remaining candidates are still very metal poor ([Fe/H]<-2.0). We further demonstrate that Pristine is well suited to identify the very rare and pristine Galactic stars with [Fe/H]<-4.0, which can teach us valuable lessons about the early Universe., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the evidence of highly blue-shifted resonance lines of the singly ionised isotope of 7BeII in high resolution UVES spectra of Nova Sagittarii 2015 No. 2 (V5668 Sgr). The resonance doublet lines 7BeII at lambda 313.0583, 313.1228 nm are clearly detected in several non saturated and partially resolved high velocity components during the evolution of the outburst. The total absorption identified with Beryllium has an equivalent width much larger than all other elements and comparable to hydrogen. We estimate an atomic fraction N(7Be)/N(Ca) ~ 53-69 from unsaturated and resolved absorption components. The detection of 7Be in several high velocity components shows that it has been freshly created in a thermonuclear runaway via the reaction 3He}(alpha,gamma) 7Be during the Nova explosion, as postulated by Arnould and Norgaard (1975) , however in much larger amounts than predicted by current models. 7Be decays to 7Li with a half-life of 53.22 days, comparable to the temporal span covered by the observations. The non detection of LiI requires that LiII remains ionised throughout our observations. The massive 7Be ejecta result into a 7Li production that is about 4.7-4.9 dex above the meteoritic abundance. If such a high production is common even in a small fraction (~5%) of Novae, they can make all the "stellar" 7Li of the Milky Way., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures. {The aim of this work is to investigate the relations between the abundances of different elements in the globular cluster M4, selected for its uniform deficiency of iron, to explore the best models explaining the pattern of these observed abundances. Moreover, in turnoff stars, the abundances of the elements are not suspected to be affected by internal mixing. In M4, using low and moderate resolution spectra obtained for 91 turnoff (and subgiant) stars with the ESO FLAMES-Giraffe spectrograph, we have extended previous measurements of abundances (of Li, C and Na) to other elements (C, Si, Ca, Sr and Ba), using model atmosphere analysis. We have also studied the influence of the choice of the microturbulent velocity. Firstly, the peculiar turnoff star found to be very Li-rich in a previous paper does not show any other abundance anomalies relative to the other turnoff stars in M4. ~Secondly, an anti-correlation between C and Na has been detected, the slope being significative at more than $3\sigma$. This relation between C and Na is in perfect agreement with the relation found in giant stars selected below the RGB bump. ~Thirdly, the strong enrichment of Si and of the neutron-capture elements Sr and Ba, already observed in the giants in M4, is confirmed. ~Finally, the relations between Li, C, Na, Sr and Ba constrain the enrichment processes of the observed stars. The abundances of the elements in the turnoff stars appear to be compatible with production processes by massive AGBs, but are also compatible with the production of second generation elements (like Na) and low Li produced by, for example, fast rotating massive stars., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted to A&A

MSE is an 11.25m aperture observatory with a 1.5 square degree field of view that will be fully dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy. More than 3200 fibres will feed spectrographs operating at low (R ~ 2000 - 3500) and moderate (R ~ 6000) spectral resolution, and approximately 1000 fibers will feed spectrographs operating at high (R ~ 40000) resolution. MSE is designed to enable transformational science in areas as diverse as tomographic mapping of the interstellar and intergalactic media; the in-situ chemical tagging of thick disk and halo stars; connecting galaxies to their large scale structure; measuring the mass functions of cold dark matter sub-halos in galaxy and cluster-scale hosts; reverberation mapping of supermassive black holes in quasars; next generation cosmological surveys using redshift space distortions and peculiar velocities. MSE is an essential follow-up facility to current and next generations of multi-wavelength imaging surveys, including LSST, Gaia, Euclid, WFIRST, PLATO, and the SKA, and is designed to complement and go beyond the science goals of other planned and current spectroscopic capabilities like VISTA/4MOST, WHT/WEAVE, AAT/HERMES and Subaru/PFS. It is an ideal feeder facility for E-ELT, TMT and GMT, and provides the missing link between wide field imaging and small field precision astronomy. MSE is optimized for high throughput, high signal-to-noise observations of the faintest sources in the Universe with high quality calibration and stability being ensured through the dedicated operational mode of the observatory. The lithium abundance in turnoff stars of the old population of our Galaxy is remarkably constant in the metallicity interval -2.8\textless{}[Fe/H] \textless{}-2.0, defining a plateau. The Li abundance of these turnoff stars is clearly lower than the abundance predicted by the primordial nucleosynthesis in the frame of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Different scenarios have been proposed for explaining this discrepancy, along with the very low scatter of the lithium abundance around the plateau. The recently identified very high velocity star, WISE J072543.88-235119.7 appears to belong to the old Galactic population, and appears to be an extreme halo star on a bound, retrograde Galactic orbit. In this paper, we study the abundance ratios and, in particular the lithium abundance, in this star. The available spectra (ESO-Very Large Telescope) are analyzed and the abundances of Li, C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Sr and Ba are determined.The abundance ratios in WISE J072543.88-235119.7 are those typical of old turnoff stars. The lithium abundance in this star ~is in close agreement with the lithium abundance found in the metal-poor turnoff stars located at moderate distance from the Sun. This high velocity star confirms, in an extreme case, that the very small scatter of the lithium plateau persists independent of the dynamic and kinematic properties of the stars.

This White Paper presents the scientific motivations for a multi-object spectrograph (MOS) on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The MOS case draws on all fields of contemporary astronomy, from extra-solar planets, to the study of the halo of the Milky Way and its satellites, and from resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies out to observations of the earliest 'first-light' structures in the partially-reionised Universe. The material presented here results from thorough discussions within the community over the past four years, building on the past competitive studies to agree a common strategy toward realising a MOS capability on the E-ELT. The cases have been distilled to a set of common requirements which will be used to define the MOSAIC instrument, entailing two observational modes ('high multiplex' and 'high definition'). When combined with the unprecedented sensitivity of the E-ELT, MOSAIC will be the world's leading MOS facility. In analysing the requirements we also identify a high-multiplex MOS for the longer-term plans for the E-ELT, with an even greater multiplex (>1000 targets) to enable studies of large-scale structures in the high-redshift Universe. Following the green light for the construction of the E-ELT the MOS community, structured through the MOSAIC consortium, is eager to realise a MOS on the E-ELT as soon as possible. We argue that several of the most compelling cases for ELT science, in highly competitive areas of modern astronomy, demand such a capability. For example, MOS observations in the early stages of E-ELT operations will be essential for follow-up of sources identified by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We present an overview of and status report on the WEAVE next-generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). WEAVE principally targets optical ground-based follow up of upcoming ground-based (LOFAR) and space-based (Gaia) surveys. WEAVE is a multi-object and multi-IFU facility utilizing a new 2-degree prime focus field of view at the WHT, with a buffered pick-and-place positioner system hosting 1000 multi-object (MOS) fibres, 20 integral field units, or a single large IFU for each observation. The fibres are fed to a single spectrograph, with a pair of 8k(spectral) x 6k (spatial) pixel cameras, located within the WHT GHRIL enclosure on the telescope Nasmyth platform, supporting observations at R~5000 over the full 370-1000nm wavelength range in a single exposure, or a high resolution mode with limited coverage in each arm at R~20000.
