In this work, we prepared sulfur-zinc nanoparticles (ZnS-TGA) functionalized with thioglycolic acid by a hydrothermal method and tested their photodegradation ability by solar irradiation. ZnS-TGA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), UV–Vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence spectroscopy. In the characterization of these nanoparticles, thioglycolic acid proved to be a strong capping ligand, with a specific surface area of 36.82 m2/g and an average size of 7.15 nm. To test the photocatalytic degradability of the product, methylene blue (MB) was used as a model pollutant. Various operational variables were investigated, including pH, amount of nanoparticles, dye concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption tests, and the statistical physical calculations allowed the analysis of the energetic and steric variables of the adsorption of MB dye molecules on the surface of these nanoparticles. The equilibrium data were well fitted with Langmuir-Freundlich (L-F) and the adsorption kinetics with pseudo-first order. The maximum adsorption capacity of the MB dye removal process was 30.92 mg g−1 at pH 7 and 298 K, and this process was spontaneous and exothermic. The dye molecules and the surface of the nanoparticles exhibited physical interactions with adsorption energies of 23.31–25.92 kJ/mol. The photocatalytic activity of these nanoparticles resulted in a dye degradation efficiency of 91.1 % in 180 min. The photocatalytic efficiency remained almost unchanged after five consecutive degradation cycles, resulting in a methylene blue degradation of 85 %. According to these results, these environmentally friendly nanoparticles have the potential to purify industrial and urban liquids contaminated with harmful organic compounds such as dye molecules.

The mercury adsorption properties of carbon-based materials prepared from jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and guava (Psidium guajava) seed wastes are reported and compared in this paper. These adsorbent samples were obtained via pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization. Mercury adsorption equilibrium was studied at pH 4 and 20–40 °C, and the adsorption enthalpy changes were calculated for all adsorbent samples. The results showed that jacaranda-based materials contained a higher amount of acidic functional groups than guava seed-based adsorbents, and consequently, their mercury adsorption properties were better. The double layer adsorption of sulfamethoxazole, ketoprofen and carbamazepine on a phosphorus carbon-based adsorbent was analyzed using statistical physics models. The objective of this research was to provide a physicochemical analysis of the adsorption mechanism of these organic compounds via the calculation of both steric and energetic parameters. Results showed that the adsorption mechanism of these pharmaceuticals was multimolecular where the presence of molecular aggregates (mainly dimers) could be expected in the aqueous solution. This adsorbent showed adsorption capacities at saturation from 15 to 36 mg/g for tested pharmaceutical molecules. The ketoprofen adsorption was exothermic, while the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and carbamazepine was endothermic. The adsorption mechanism of these molecules involved physical interaction forces with interaction energies from 5.95 to 19.66 kJ/mol. These results contribute with insights on the adsorption mechanisms of pharmaceutical pollutants. The identification of molecular aggregates, the calculation of maximum adsorption capacities and the characterization of thermodynamic behavior provide crucial information for the understanding of these adsorption systems and to optimize their removal operating conditions. These findings have direct implications for wastewater treatment and environmental remediation associated with pharmaceutical pollution where advanced adsorption technologies are required.

A seasonal study of the lipid composition of a primary sludge (dry and dewatered base) obtained from an urban wastewater treatment plant located in Aguascalientes (Mexico) is reported. This study assessed the variability in sludge composition to establish its potential as a raw material for biodiesel production. Lipid recovery was achieved by extraction using two solvents. Hexane was employed for lipid extraction from dry sludge, whereas hexane and ethyl butyrate were used for comparison with dewatered sludge. The formation (%) of fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) was determined using extracted lipids. The extraction results from the dry sludge showed 14 and 6% of recovered lipids and their conversion to biodiesel, respectively. For the dewatered sludge, the lipid recovery and biodiesel formation were 17.4 and 60% using hexane, and 23 and 77% for ethyl butyrate, respectively, on a dry basis. Statistical data indicated that lipid recovery depended on the physicochemical characteristics of sewage sludge, which were related to seasonal changes, population activities, and changes in plant configuration, among other factors. These variables must be considered in the design of large-scale extraction equipment for the application and commercial exploitation of biomass waste in biofuel production. Mathematical models that represent food processing operations are characterized by the nonlinearity of their dynamic behavior with possible discrete events, the existence of several variables of interest that are usually distributed in space, and the presence of nonlinear constraints. These features require robust optimization methods to resolve these models and to identify the optimum operating conditions of the processes. Stochastic optimization methods, often referred as metaheuristics, are effective and reliable tools to perform the global and multiobjective optimization of process units and operations involved in food engineering. In this way, this paper surveys recent advances and contributions that have applied stochastic methods for solving global and multiobjective optimization problems in food engineering. The description of the most used stochastic algorithms in food engineering is provided including the application of those methods classified as random search techniques, evolutionary methods, and swarm intelligence methods. It was observed that evolutionary methods are the most applied in solving food engineering optimization problems where the genetic algorithm and differential evolution stand out. Finally, remarks on the limitations and current challenges to improving the numerical performance of stochastic optimization methods for food engineering applications are also discussed.

Cetyl palmitate was produced by the esterification of palmitic acid with cetyl alcohol using n-hexane and ethyl ether as solvents and a commercial lipase as a catalyst. The effect of solvents to reagents mass ratio (0.5 : 1–3 : 1), percentage of n-hexane in the solvent mixture (0–100%), and reaction temperature (25–55°C) on the reaction rate were evaluated for a fixed amount of enzyme (1 wt% related to the total mass of substrates) in an equimolar mixture of palmitic acid and cetyl alcohol. Temperature and n-hexane percentage in the solvent had positive effects on the reaction rate. The total solvent-to-reagent mass ratio showed a negative effect on the reaction rate when a solvent mixture rich in ethyl ether was used. The higher the concentration of n-hexane, the lower the effect of the mass ratio of solvents to reagents on the reaction rate. Although the amount of ethyl ether in the solvent mixture had a negative effect on the reaction rate, it had a positive effect on the solubility of the system, that is, the more ethyl ether in the mixture, the lower the solvent to reagents mass ratio required to ensure a homogeneous mixture. A ping-pong bi-bi mechanism-based model was proposed to represent the system kinetics and was well fitted to the experimental data.

In this work, a closed-loop strategy for the management and valorization of winery waste was proposed. The exhausted pomace and grape stalks that are typically obtained from white wine industries were used as a source of simple sugars, namely, glucose and fructose, and of lignocellulosic feedstock for the preparation of selective catalysts for the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) production from fructose. A novel synthetic procedure was developed for the synthesis of iron-sulfonated magnetic biochar catalysts (Fe-SMBCs). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), BET surface area, porous structure analysis and determination of total amount of acid sites were performed in order to characterize the physico-chemical properties of the synthesized systems. Then, these heterogeneous catalysts were successfully tested via the dehydration of simple sugars into 5-HMF by using methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and gamma valerolactone (GVL) as co-solvents. The optimum 5-HMF yield of 40.9 ± 1.1%mol with a selectivity of 59.8 ± 2.6%mol was achieved by adopting the following optimized conditions: 0.1 g of catalyst, volume ratio of GVL to H2O = 2 to 1, 403 K, 6 h. In addition, the catalyst was easily recycled using an external magnetic field and used for at least five reaction cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity.

In this work, a novel sustainable approach was proposed for the integral valorisation of Arctium lappa (burdock) seeds and roots. Firstly, a preliminary recovery of bioactive compounds, including unsaturated fatty acids, was performed. Then, simple sugars (i.e., fructose and sucrose) and phenolic compounds were extracted by using compressed fluids (supercritical CO2 and propane). Consequently, a complete characterisation of raw biomass and extraction residues was carried out to determine the starting chemical composition in terms of residual lipids, proteins, hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, and ash content. Subsequently, three alternative ways to utilise extraction residues were proposed and successfully tested: (i) enzymatic hydrolysis operated by Cellulases (Thricoderma resei) of raw and residual biomass to glucose, (ii) direct ethanolysis to produce ethyl levulinate; and (iii) pyrolysis to obtain biochar to be used as supports for the synthesis of sulfonated magnetic iron-carbon catalysts (Fe-SMCC) to be applied in the dehydration of fructose for the synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). The development of these advanced approaches enabled the full utilisation of this resource through the production of fine chemicals and value-added compounds in line with the principles of the circular economy.
