3. Influence of Disorder and Anharmonic Fluctuations on the Dynamical Rashba Effect in Purely Inorganic Lead-Halide Perovskites

Abstract

Doping organic metal-halide perovskites with cesium could be the best solution to stabilize highly-efficient perovskite solar cells. The understanding of the respective roles of the organic molecule, on one hand, and the inorganic lattice, on the other, is thus crucial in order to be able to optimize the physical properties of the mixed-cation structures. In particular, the study of the recombination mechanisms is thought to be one of the key challenges towards full comprehension of their working principles. Using molecular dynamics and frozen phonons, we evidence sub-picosecond anharmonic fluctuations in the fully inorganic $CsPbI_3$ perovskite. We reveal the effect of these fluctuations, combined with spin-orbit coupling, on the electronic band structure, evidencing a dynamical Rashba effect. Our study show that under certain conditions space disorder can quench the Rashba effect. As for time disorder, we evidence a dynamical Rashba effect which is similar to what was found for $MAPbI_3$ and which is still sizable despite temperature disorder, the large investigated supercell, and the absence of the organic cations' motion. We show that the spin texture associated to the Rashba splitting cannot be deemed responsible for a consistent reduction of recombination rates, although the spin mismatch between valence and conduction band increases with the ferroelectric distortion causing the Rashba splitting.

Abstract

We described an approach to achieve fine color control of fluorescent White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED), based on an Ultra-thin Premixed emitting Layer (UPL). The UPL consists of a mixture of two dyes (red-emitting 4-di(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)amino-4'-dicyanovinylbenzene or fvin and green-emitting 4-di(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)aminobenzaldehyde or fcho) premixed in a single evaporation cell: since these two molecules have comparable structures and similar melting temperatures, a blend can be evaporated, giving rise to thin films of identical and reproducible composition compared to those of the pre-mixture. The principle of fine color tuning is demonstrated by evaporating a 1-nm-thick layer of this blend within the hole-transport layer (4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphtyl)-N-phenylamino]biphenyl (\alpha-NPB)) of a standard fluorescent OLED structure. Upon playing on the position of the UPL inside the hole-transport layer, as well as on the premix composition, two independent parameters are available to finely control the emitted color. Combined with blue emission from the heterojunction, white light with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage 1931 color coordinates (0.34, 0.34) was obtained, with excellent color stability with the injected current. The spectrum reveals that the fcho material does not emit light due to efficient energy transfer to the red-emitting fvin compound but plays the role of a host matrix for fvin, allowing for a very precise adjustment of the red dopant amount in the device.

14. Optimization of organic electrochemical transistors for sensor applications

Abstract

Despite the recent interest in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) as chemical and biological sensors, little is known about the role that device architecture and materials parameters play in determining sensor performance. We use numerical modeling to establish design rules in two regimes of operation: We find that for operation as an ion-to-electron converter, the response of OECTs is maximized through the use of a gate electrode that is much larger than the channel or through the use of a nonpolarizable gate electrode. Improving the conductivity of the polymer and using a channel geometry that maximizes channel width and thickness, and minimizes channel length helps increase the response. For operation as an electrochemical sensor, the sensitivity is maximized in OECTs with gate electrodes that are smaller than their channels. The sensitivity can be improved by increasing the charge carrier mobility and the capacitance per unit area of the conducting polymer, and also its ability to be penetrated by ions from the electrolyte. A channel geometry that maximizes channel width and minimizes channel length also improves sensitivity. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

17. A temperature dependent power-law drain current model for coplanar OFETs.

Abstract

We present a drain current model for coplanar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) considering temperature dependent power-law mobility and contact resistance. By solving a microscopic two-dimensional equivalent circuit model, we demonstrate that the power-law dependence of mobility on the gate voltage leads to the asymptotic power-law dependence of the contact resistance. Furthermore, we validated the model by measuring the transfer characteristics of pentacene-based coplanar OFETs in a wide temperature range between 293 K and 373 K. We study the temperature dependence of the characteristic temperature on the power-law exponent and the on-state resistance. We showed that the characteristic temperature is independent of the temperature and the on-state resistance follows an inverse Arrhenius-type law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Organic inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have emerged as an innovative material with excellent optoelectronic properties, in bulk or as single crystals with low defect density with specific morphologies [1]–[3]. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become a trending technology in photovoltaic research due to a rapid increase in efficiency in recent years. [4].However, they show a degradation of their performance under operational conditions (light, bias, environmental stress, etc.). To increase their long-term stability is one of the biggest challenges for market applications. The presence of strong internal electric fields, the existence of ferroelectric domains, or the diffusion of ions/defects are suggested as possible causes for the degradation processes. Several authors suggest the existence of native vacancy defects in these materials and attribute to those defects a major role in the control of the optoelectronic properties, such as hysteresis in the photo-induced current-voltage curve, as well as in device degradation and lifetime. [5], [6]Among various degradation mechanism in PSCs, it’s important to understand the mechanism in both bulk perovskite and at the interfaces between perovskite layer and transport layers.Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful technique to examine the charge carrier dynamics in perovskite solar cells. It gives insight about internal electrical processes in PSCs and distinguishes between bulk and interfacial processes [7]–[9]. Each physical parameter can be extracted in the form of resistance (R), capacitance (C) and Warburg capacitance (W) using an equivalent electrical circuit model. In addition, dielectric modulus is applied for studying the microscopic mechanism of charge transport, contribution of grains (crystals) and grain boundaries and recombination dynamics [10].In this study, we focus on the degradation of inverted planar structure perovskite solar cells through impedance and modulus spectroscopy. Two samples with the same structure are prepared and stored in air and under dark for 30 days. EIS is measured periodically, on the first sample, without J-V measurement to prevent EIS results from being affected by electrical field that occurs during J-V measurements, while J-V characteristic is measured periodically on the second sample. From combined impedance and modulus data, we confirmed that grains and grain boundaries can be distinguished. The results of modulus spectroscopy imply that the grain size decreases and grain boundaries increases which accelerates ionic accumulation and electronic polarization at interfaces. The results of J-V measurement confirms this hypothesis. Furthermore, we prepared two types of PSCs with electron transport layer based on wet- and dry- processes in order to investigate the effect of solvent on degradation mechanism.

Abstract

International audience; Within the challenging race for alternative energy sources, hybrid metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have undergone unprecedented progress with efficiencies reaching now 25.5% [1-3]. These remarkable performances result from the exceptional optoelectrical properties of hybrid perovskite materials. Coupled with their potential for low fabrication cost, perovskite solar cell technology is very promising. However, since hybrid halide perovskites have a highly ionic character, they can decompose under external stresses such as moisture, solvents and heating cycles [4-6]. Reducing environmental stresses imposed by moisture or oxygen for example, in order to improve the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells, is critical to the deployment of this technology.In 2017, Grancini et al [7] published a structure proven to be stable for more than 10,000 hrs, measured uned controlled standard conditions, by engineering an ultra-stable 2D/3D (HOOC(CH2)4NH3)2PbI4/CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite junction. This structure is based on a fully printable architecture made of three mesoporous layers in which the perovskite is embed.In this communication, we investigate the effects of changing the perovskite composition in this architecture by adding and/or replacing iodine with bromine into its chemical composition to tune device, increasing the band gap of the material [8], opening the gate to potential application in water splitting (VOC > 1.23 V at pH = 0 [9]). Abstract

We review recent compact modeling solutions for Organic and Amorphous Oxide TFTs (OTFTs and AOS TFTs, respectively), which were developed, under the framework of the EU-funded project DOMINO, to address issues specifically connected to the physics of these devices. In particular, using different approaches, analytical equations were formulated to model the Density of States (DOS), different transport mechanisms, trapping/de-trapping, drain current, stress, capacitances, frequency dispersion and noise. The final TFT models were, after implementation in Verilog-A, validated by means of the design and simulation of test circuits.

Abstract

Correct parameterization of the Gaussian disorder model (GDM) on spatially random sites is necessary for a complete description of charge transport in disordered materials and concomitant device characteristics. Because the GDM on spatially random sites considers both energetic and spatial disorder, it is superior to the GDM on a cubic lattice. However, analytical arguments and experimental evidence are still lacking for correct parameterization of the model over a wide range of model parameters, energetic and spatial disorder, and electric fields. We show that the model requires a set of parameters to correctly account for high mobility and its charge density dependence, and we develop such a model. The model is implemented in a numerical simulation tool for comparison with the measured device characteristics. Accurate agreement with experimental data, particularly with the high mobility values in organic fieldeffect transistors, is achieved throughout a wide range of temperature by adjusting both the localization length and the attempt-to-escape frequency.
