The current energy transition imposes a rapid implementation of energy storage systems with high energy density and eminent regeneration and cycling efficiency. Metal hydrides are potential candidates for generalized energy storage, when coupled with fuel cell units and/or batteries. An overview of ongoing research is reported and discussed in this review work on the light of application as hydrogen and heat storage matrices, as well as thin films for hydrogen optical sensors. These include a selection of single-metal hydrides, Ti-V(Fe) based intermetallics, multi-principal element alloys (high-entropy alloys), and a series of novel synthetically accessible metal borohydrides. Metal hydride materials can be as well of important usefulness for MH-based electrodes with high capacity (e.g. MgH2 ~ 2000 mAh g-1) and solid-state electrolytes displaying high ionic conductivity suitable, respectively, for Li-ion and Li/Mg battery technologies. To boost further research and development directions some characterization techniques dedicated to the study of M-H interactions, their equilibrium reactions, and additional quantification of hydrogen concentration in thin film and bulk hydrides are presented at the end of this manuscript.

We summarize our results for the impact of anisotropic fermionic velocities in (2+1)-dimensional QED on the critical number of fermion flavors, N^c_f, and dynamical mass generation. We apply different approximation schemes for the gauge boson vacuum polarization and the fermion-boson vertex to analyze the according Dyson-Schwinger equations in a finite volume. In this work, we have developed economic process to elaborate scalable titanium dioxide nanotube layers which show a tunable functionality. The titanium dioxide nanotube layers was prepared by electrochemical anodization of Ti foil in 0.4 wt% hydrofluoric acid solution. The nanotube layers structure and morphology were characterized using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The surface topography and wettability was studied according to the anodization time. The sample synthesized while the current density reached a local minimum displayed higher contact angle. Beyond this point, the contact angles decrease with the anodization time. Photo-degradation of acid orange 7 in aqueous solution was used as a probe to assess the photo-catalytic activity of titanium dioxide nanotube layers under UV irradiation. We obtained better photocatalitic activity for the sample elaborate at higher current density. Finally we use the Ciliated Protozoan T. pyriformis, an alternative cell model used for in vitro toxicity studies, to predict the toxicity of titanium dioxide nanotube layers in biological system. We did not observe any characteristic effect in the presence of the titanium dioxide nanotube layers on two physiological parameters related to this organism, non-specific esterases activity and population growth rate.

In view of potential applications of magnetic particles in biomedicine and electromagnetic devices, we made use of the classical Stober method base-catalysed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to encapsulate FeNi nanoparticles within a silica shell. An original stirring system under high power ultrasounds made possible to disperse the otherwise agglomerated particles. Sonication guaranteed particles to remain dispersed during the Stober synthesis and also improved the efficiency of the method. The coated particles are characterized by electron microscopy (TEM) and spectroscopy (EDX) showing a core-shell structure with a uniform layer of silica. Silica-coating does not affect the core magnetic properties. Indeed, all samples are ferromagnetic at 77 K and room temperature and the Curie point remains unchanged. Only the coercive force shows an unexpected non-monotonous dependence on silica layer thickness., Comment: Regular paper submited to international peer-reveiwed journal

The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) experiment on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Curiosity rover seeks evidence of organic compounds on the surface of Mars. Since the beginning of the mission, various organic molecules have been detected and identified. While several have been demonstrated to be indigenous to the Martian soil and rocks analyzed, others appear to have been produced from sources internal to the experiment. The objective of this study is to build an exhaustive molecular database to support the interpretation of SAM results by identifying all the chemical species produced from Tenax® adsorbents, by determining (1) the thermal degradation by‐products of Tenax®, (2) the effect of Tenax® conditioning on the formation of Tenax® by‐products, (3) the impact of MTBSTFA or a mixture of MTBSTFA and DMF on Tenax® decomposition, and (4) the reaction between Tenax® and calcium perchlorate. Our results indicate that the by‐products of the SAM trap are due to the impact of trap heating, the impact of the derivatization reagent (MTBSTFA) and the presence of perchlorate in Martian soil. Some of these by‐products are observed in the SAM gas chromatograph mass spectrometer data from Mars.
