The investigation of crystallographic, electronic, and magnetic characteristics, especially the mixed valences of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ under pressure of a novel europium-based bismuth selenide compound, Eu$_4$Bi$_6$Se$_{13}$, presented. This new compound adopts a monoclinic crystal structure classified under the P$2_1$/m space group (#11). It exhibits distinctive structural features, including substantial Eu-Se coordination numbers, Bi-Se ladders, and linear chains of Eu atoms that propagate along the b-axis. Electronic resistivity assessments indicate that Eu$_{4}$Bi$_{6}$Se$_{13}$ exhibits weak metallic behaviors. Magnetic characterization reveals uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, with a notable spin transition at approximately 1.2 T when the magnetic field is oriented along the b-axis. This behavior, coupled with the specific Eu-Eu interatomic distances and the magnetic saturation observed at low fields, supports the identification of metamagnetic properties attributable to the flipping of europium spins. The Curie-Weiss analysis of the magnetic susceptibility measured both perpendicular and parallel to the b-axis and high-pressure partial fluorescence yield (PFY) results detected by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveal the tendency of the material to enter a mixed valent state where the trivalent state becomes more prominent with the pressure increase or temperature decrease., Comment: 22 pages 8 figures

The electron-phonon interaction plays a critical role in materials electrical, thermal, optical, and superconducting properties. However, measuring the phonon mode-resolved electron-phonon interaction has been challenging. Here we propose neutron-scattering-based Anomalous Neutron nUclear-Magnetic Interference Spectroscopy (ANUBIS), where the co-existence of neutron nuclear scattering and magnetic scattering leads to anomalous dynamical structure factor under the presence of the electron-phonon interaction. Such anomalous structure factor is linear in electron-phonon coupling constant at the phonon wavevector, and is directly proportional to the momentum and energy-resolved dielectric function. The experimental configuration can be achieved using existing polarized inelastic neutron scattering setup, and an order-of-magnitude estimate shows the viability to observe the anomalous scattering signal is around $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-3}$ relative to phonon scattering, which is achievable at emerging neutron facilities. Engineering new quantum phases requires fine tuning of the electronic, orbital, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. To this end, the kagome lattice with flat bands has garnered great attention by hosting various topological and correlated phases, when the flat band is at the Fermi level. Here we discover unconventional nematiciy in kagome metal CoSn, where flat bands are fully occupied below the Fermi level. Thermodynamic, dilatometry, resonant X-ray scattering, inelastic neutron scattering, Larmor diffraction, and thermoelectric measurements consistently hint at rotational symmetry-breaking and nematic order that is pronounced only near T=225 K. These observations, principally the nematic's finite temperature stability -- incipience -- can be explained by a phenomenological model which reveals that thermally excited flat bands promote symmetry breaking at a characteristic temperature. Our work shows that thermal fluctuations, which are typically detrimental for correlated electron phases, can induce new ordered states of matter, avoiding the requirements for fine tuning of electronic bands., Comment: 37 pages, 5 main figures, 14 supplementary figures

To push upper boundaries of effective thermal conductivity in polymer composites, a fundamental understanding of thermal transport mechanisms is crucial. Although there is intensive simulation research, systematic experimental investigation on thermal transport in polymer composites is limited. To better understand thermal transport processes, we design polymer composites with perfect fillers (graphite) and defective fillers (graphite oxide); we choose polar polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a matrix model; and we identify how thermal transport occurs across heterogeneous interfaces. Measured thermal conductivities of in PVA/defective filler composites is higher than those of PVA/perfect filler composites, while measured thermal conductivities in defective fillers are lower than those of perfect fillers. An effective quantum mechanical model is developed, showing that the vibrational state of the defective level plays a critical role in enhancing the thermal conductivity with increased defect concentration. The precise controllability of the Fermi level is a critical aspect of quantum materials. For topological Weyl semimetals, there is a pressing need to fine-tune the Fermi level to the Weyl nodes and unlock exotic electronic and optoelectronic effects associated with the divergent Berry curvature. However, in contrast to 2D materials, where the Fermi level can be controlled through various techniques, the situation for bulk crystals beyond laborious chemical doping poses significant challenges. Here, we report the meV-level ultra-fine-tuning of the Fermi level of bulk topological Weyl semimetal TaP using accelerator-based high-energy hydrogen implantation and theory-driven planning. By calculating the desired carrier density and controlling the accelerator profiles, the Fermi level can be fine-tuned from 5 meV to only $\sim$0.5 meV (DFT calculations) away from the Weyl nodes. The Weyl nodes are preserved, while the carrier mobility is largely retained. Our work demonstrates the viability of this generic approach to tune the Fermi level in semimetal systems and could serve to achieve property fine-tuning for other bulk quantum materials with ultrahigh precision.

Topological materials are at the forefront of quantum materials research, offering tremendous potential for next-generation energy and information devices. However, current investigation of these materials remains largely focused on performance and often neglects the crucial aspect of sustainability. Recognizing the pivotal role of sustainability in addressing global pollution, carbon emissions, resource conservation, and ethical labor practices, we present a comprehensive evaluation of topological materials based on their sustainability and environmental impact. Our approach involves a hierarchical analysis encompassing cost, toxicity, energy demands, environmental impact, social implications, and resilience to imports. By applying this framework to over 16,000 topological materials, we establish a sustainable topological materials database. Our endeavor unveils environmental-friendly topological materials candidates which have been previously overlooked, providing insights into their environmental ramifications and feasibility for industrial scalability. The work represents a critical step toward industrial adoption of topological materials, offering the potential for significant technological advancements and broader societal benefits.

Recent discovery of emergent magnetism in van der Waals magnetic materials (vdWMM) has broadened the material space for developing spintronic devices for energy-efficient computation. While there has been appreciable progress in vdWMM discovery, with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and Curie temperatures exceeding room temperature, a solution for non-volatile, deterministic switching of vdWMMs at room temperature has been missing, limiting the prospects of their adoption into commercial spintronic devices. Here, we report the first demonstration of current-controlled non-volatile, deterministic magnetization switching in a vdW magnetic material at room temperature. We have achieved spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of the PMA vdW magnet Fe3GaTe2 using a Pt spin-Hall layer up to 320 K, with a threshold switching current density as low as $J_{sw} = 1.69\times10^6 A/cm^2$ at room temperature. We have also quantitatively estimated the anti-damping-like SOT efficiency of our Fe3GaTe2/Pt bilayer system to be $\xi_{DL}$ = 0.093, using second harmonic Hall voltage measurement technique. These results mark a crucial step in making vdW magnetic materials a viable choice for the development of scalable, future spintronic devices.

The structure-property relationship plays a central role in materials science. Understanding the structure-property relationship in solid-state materials is crucial for structure design with optimized properties. The past few years witnessed remarkable progress in correlating structures with properties in crystalline materials, such as machine learning methods and particularly graph neural networks as a natural representation of crystal structures. However, significant challenges remain, including predicting properties with complex unit cells input and material-dependent, variable-length output. Here we present the virtual node graph neural network to address the challenges. By developing three types of virtual node approaches - the vector, matrix, and momentum-dependent matrix virtual nodes, we achieve direct prediction of $\Gamma$-phonon spectra and full dispersion only using atomic coordinates as input. We validate the phonon bandstructures on various alloy systems, and further build a $\Gamma$-phonon database containing over 146,000 materials in the Materials Project. Our work provides an avenue for rapid and high-quality prediction of phonon spectra and bandstructures in complex materials, and enables materials design with superior phonon properties for energy applications.
