PCORI seeks a rapid review to assess the effectiveness of synchronous audio-only care compared with in-person or video care and other usual care for managing chronic conditions, cataloging impacts of audio-only care as well as impacts vary for patients at risk for health disparities. The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency necessitated a shift in healthcare delivery from in-person care to telehealth-enabled care, both video-based and audio-only care. Audio-only care may be particularly important for vulnerable patients who have continued challenges to accessing video-based care. PCORI seeks a compressed timeline so that it can quickly identify gaps, prioritize future research, and provide timely evidence to inform existing health policy questions.

In part due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the adoption of telemedicine visits in the United States has been swift and widespread (Mehrotra et al., 2020). Thus, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) seeks to understand the evidence on the effectiveness of synchronous video-teleconferencing (VTC) visits for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. To inform timely future research investments in video-delivered care, PCORI has contracted with RTI International to conduct a rapid review (i.e., a systematic review of the evidence in a compressed timeline).

In this paper, we argue that the design of New Interfaces for Musical Expression has much to gain from the study of interaction in ensemble laptop performance contexts using ethnographic techniques. Inspired by recent third-stream research in the field of human computer interaction, we describe a recent ethnomethodologically-informed study of the Birmingham Laptop Ensemble (BiLE), and detail our approach to thick description of the group's working practices. Initial formal analysis of this material sheds light on the fluidity of composer, performer and designer roles within the ensemble and shows how confluences of these roles constitute member's differing viewpoints. We go on to draw out a number of strands of interaction that highlight the essentially complex, socially constructed and value driven nature of the group's practice and conclude by reviewing the implications of these factors on the design of software tools for laptop ensembles.

In this paper we seek to outline the methodology and philosophy of the Huddersfield Experimental Laptop Orchestra (HELO). Placing the ensemble in context of similar work, we discuss the Do-It Yourself (DIY) laptop instrument design paradigm, and the incubatory benefits that arise from participant-centered approach to ensemble rehearsal and performance.

This research project concerns the use of networks in laptop performance, which allow\ud players to directly shape the musical voices of their peers. The author’s recent work with the\ud Huddersfield Experimental Laptop Orchestra has highlighted a need to develop player-­‐\ud centred networks, in order to foster a wider exploration of interdependent approaches to\ud musical performance. The core of this thesis details the design of a parameter-­‐sharing\ud system which aims to support a diverse set of approaches to performance, whilst allowing\ud interdependencies to be flexibly reconfigured by players. The resulting system has been\ud tested and evaluated with a cross-­‐section of experienced laptop performers, with initial\ud results showing that the system enables players to bring their existing experience to\ud interdependent performance. In addition, the use of a high-­‐level graphical model for\ud manipulating interconnections allows a range of interdependencies to be explored at\ud performer-­‐level. Future work aims to support a broader range of performance practice and\ud make the process of manipulating interconnections more intuitive.
