Responsive hydrogels that undergo controlled shape changes in response to a range of stimuli are of interest for microscale soft robotic and biomedical devices. However, these applications require fabrication methods capable of preparing complex, heterogeneous materials. Here we report a new approach for making patterned, multi-material and multi-responsive hydrogels, on a micrometre to millimetre scale. Nanolitre aqueous pre-gel droplets were connected through lipid bilayers in predetermined architectures and photopolymerized to yield continuous hydrogel structures. By using this droplet network technology to pattern domains containing temperature-responsive or non-responsive hydrogels, structures that undergo reversible curling were produced. Through patterning of gold nanoparticle-containing domains into the hydrogels, light-activated shape change was achieved, while domains bearing magnetic particles allowed movement of the structures in a magnetic field. To highlight our technique, we generated a multi-responsive hydrogel that, at one temperature, could be moved through a constriction under a magnetic field and, at a second temperature, could grip and transport a cargo.

We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the solar system, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a large, wide-field ground-based system designed to obtain repeated images covering the sky visible from Cerro Pachón in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg 2 field of view, a 3.2-gigapixel camera, and six filters (ugrizy) covering the wavelength range 320-1050 nm. The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. About 90% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode that will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg 2 region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 yr of operations and will yield a co-added map to r ∼27.5. These data will result in databases including about 32 trillion observations of 20 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars, and they will serve the majority of the primary science programs. The remaining 10% of the observing time will be allocated to special projects such as Very Deep and Very Fast time domain surveys, whose details are currently under discussion. We illustrate how the LSST science drivers led to these choices of system parameters, and we describe the expected data products and their characteristics.

Dreissenid mussels (quagga and zebra mussels, Dreissena bugensis and polymorpha) continue to spread throughout inland waterbodies of North America. Although there are considerable management and mitigation efforts underway to prevent infestation of new waterbodies, there have been relatively few successful efforts to eradicate mussels once detected due to a lack of cost-effective treatments. Two potentially cost-effective molluscicidal agents, potassium chloride (KCl, also called muriate of potash) and copper (formulated as Earthtec QZ®), have successfully treated infested waters, but have varying efficacy under different water quality and temperature conditions, and to date have only been applied in moderate conductivity waters (defined here as < 400 µS/cm) common throughout North America. Natural resource managers need information on the efficacy of these chemicals in high conductivity waters more typical of riverine systems and arid climates, in addition to the range of water temperatures typically encountered in the field. We evaluated the doseresponse of quagga mussels to KCl and Earthtec QZ® in high conductivity water (≈ 700-1,400 µS/cm) across a range of temperatures (10, 18, 22 °C) to determine appropriate doses and treatment duration resulting in 100% mortality. Our data indicate that treatments in cool temperatures (i.e., 10 °C) may be challenging for eradication efforts in high conductivity waters because none of the KCl treatments and only one copper treatment resulted in 100% mortality within the experimental period. However, both KCl (> 200 ppm) and copper (120 and 180 ppb) were consistently able to induce 100% mortality in quagga mussels in warmer temperatures (i.e., = 18 °C) and thus may be good candidates for field scale application in high conductivity waters. The results of this study indicate that field-scale application should strongly consider environmental conditions during the period of application when selecting dosages and treatment duration. Fish movement in freshwater streams is often tied to patterns of flow, especially when the stream is intermittent, flashy, or some combination thereof. Relationships between flow and fish movement are exacerbated in small urban streams in impervious surface‐dominated watersheds that lead to extreme flow conditions. Here we examined the response of Creek Chub (Semotilus atromaculatus), a common pioneer fish species in eastern North America, to flow events of various sizes in a small intermittent urban headwater stream. Our primary goals were to determine (1) the level of Creek Chub movement occurring in an intermittent headwater stream, (2) the influence of flow on movement direction and magnitude, (3) the degree of variation in individual movement behaviour, and (4) mortality rates in the system. The study used PIT tagging and telemetry surveys to monitor Creek Chub movement over a six‐month period. We found that individual Creek Chub in our study system were generally mobile (71%), but usually moved short distances only; however, a few individuals moved much farther, with a maximum single movement of 521 m. Moderate or major flow events increased the probability and magnitude of Creek Chub movement, but there was no detectable asymmetry towards upstream or downstream directionality. Movement was variable among individual fish and fish were able to respond to large and small flow events to move among habitats. Finally, we observed relatively high, but episodic, mortality in our study site, potentially related to pollution events. Evidence of elevated mortality points to the potential importance of movement in highly disturbed streams, as it may enable recolonization after local extirpation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
