Hybridization between B. involutum and B. weddellii (Orchidaceae) has been first observed in the Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, the hybrid being described as B. ×cipoense Borba & Semir. In this study, allozime electrophoresis was used to test the hypothesis of occurrence of hybridization between these two species, as suggested by morphological characters, in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia State, Brazil. The lack of a diagnostic locus does not allow definite confirmation of the natural hybridization, although this hypotheses is reinforced by the absence of exclusive alleles in the putative hybrid individuals. The existence of several different genotypes points out to either population derived from multiple hybridization events or the hybrids produced offspring. Homozigosity in some morphologically intermediate individuals of alelles which are exclusive to B. involutum and high genetic similarity between them reinforce the hypotheses of introgression in B. involutum, but not in B. weddellii. Genetic variability observed in B. weddellii (He = 0.21) and B. involutum (He = 0.35) is high. Bulbophyllum weddellii and B. involutum presented very high genetic similarity values (0.94). These species, although vegetatively similar, have been placed in different sections based on floral morphology. The results suggest that these species may be more related than previously supposed. Hibridação entre B. involutum e B. weddellii (Orchidaceae) foi observada pela primeira vez na Serra do Cipó, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, o híbrido sendo descrito como B. ×cipoense Borba & Semir. Neste estudo, foi utilizada eletroforese de alozimas para testar a hipótese de ocorrência de hibridação entre estas espécies, como sugerido por caracteres morfológicos, na Chapada Diamantina, Estado da Bahia, Brasil. A falta de um locus diagnóstico não permite confirmação definitiva da hibridação natural, embora esta hipótese seja reforçada pela ausência de alelos exclusivos nos indivíduos supostamente híbridos. A existência de vários genótipos diferentes indica que ou a população é derivada de múltiplos eventos de hibridação, ou que os híbridos estão se reproduzindo. Homozigose em alguns indivíduos morfologicamente intermediários de alelos exclusivos à espécie B. involutum e a elevada similaridade genética entre eles reforçam a hipótese de introgressão em B. involutum, mas não em B. weddellii. A variabilidade genética observada em B. weddellii (He = 0,21) e B. involutum (He = 0,35) é elevada. Bulbophyllum weddellii e B. involutum apresentaram valor de similaridade genética muito elevado (0,94). Estas espécies, embora vegetativamente muito similares, têm sido colocadas em diferentes seções baseado na morfologia floral. Os resultados encontrados sugerem que estas espécies são mais relacionadas do que previamente suposto.

Foi estudada a biologia reprodutiva de Melocactus glaucescens e M. paucispinus (Cactaceae) no Município de Morro do Chapéu, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, sendo abordados aspectos da fenologia, biologia floral, polinização e sistema reprodutivo. Foram registrados os períodos de floração e frutificação, visitantes florais, freqüência e tipo de visitas, além de estratégia e comportamento dos visitantes às flores. Foram realizadas polinizações experimentais para verificar o sistema reprodutivo das espécies. As duas espécies de Melocactus estudadas apresentaram sobreposição de floração ao longo do período de estudo. Os atributos florais de ambas as espécies são típicos da síndrome da ornitofilia: cores atrativas, estrutura tubulosa e produção de néctar com baixa concentração de solutos, entre 20% e 30%. O beija-flor Chlorostilbon aureoventris Boucier & Mulsant (1948) foi o visitante mais freqüente, com 82% e 89% do total de visitas para M. paucispinus e M. glaucescens, respectivamente. Outras espécies de beija-flores e borboletas também visitaram as flores das espécies. A sobreposição no período de floração e a similaridade na composição da guilda de polinizadores destas e demais espécies simpátricas de Melocactus favorece a hibridação no gênero, como foi observado na região. Melocactus glaucescens apresentou auto-incompatibilidade e alogamia, enquanto M. paucispinus é auto-compatível e autogâmica, porém com menor frutificação em autopolinização do que em polinização cruzada, possivelmente devido à ocorrência de depressão endogâmica. Polinizações interespecíficas indicam a ocorrência de inter-compatibilidade entre M. paucispinus e M. concinnus Buining & Brederoo, sustentando hipóteses correntes de hibridação entre estas espécies. The reproductive biology of Melocactus glaucescens and M. paucispinus (Cactaceae) was studied in the municipality of Morro do Chapéu, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia State, comprising the phenology, floral biology, pollination and mating system of the species. It was recorded flowering and fruiting periods, flower visitors, frequency and kind of visits, and the strategy and behavior of the visitors on the flowers. Experimental pollinations were carried out to determine the mating systems of the species. The flowering period of both Melocactus species overlapped during the study period. The floral characteristics of the species are typical of ornithophily: showy colors, tubular structure, and nectar with low concentration of solutes, between 20% and 30%. The hummingbird Chlorostilbon aureoventris Boucier & Mulsant (1948) was the most frequent flower visitor, performing 82% and 89% of the visits in M. paucispinus and M. glaucescens, respectively. Other hummingbird and butterfly species also visited the flowers of both species. The overlap in the flowering period and the similarity in the guild of pollinators of those and other sympatric species of Melocactus favour the occurrence of hybridization, as it has been observed in that area. Melocactus glaucescens presented self-incompatibility and allogamy. Conversely, M. paucispinus is self-compatible and autogamous, however presenting lower fruit set in selfing than in outcrossing, possibly due to the occurrence of inbreeding depression. Interspecific experimental pollinations indicate the occurrence of inter-compatibility between M. paucispinus and M. concinnus Buining & Brederoo, supporting current hypotheses of natural hybridization between them.

A Chapada Diamantina localiza-se na porção norte da Cadeia do Espinhaço, tendo como vegetação típica os campos rupestres, mas ocorrendo também em matas de galeria, cerrado e caatinga, possuindo elevado grau de endemismo. O gênero Bulbophyllum Thouars é um dos maiores da família Orchidaceae com aproximadamente 1.200 espécies. No Brasil são reconhecidas cerca de 58 espécies, mas apenas cinco têm sido documentadas para o Estado da Bahia. Neste trabalho foi realizado o levantamento das espécies de Bulbophyllum da Chapada Diamantina, através de coletas e coleções de herbário. Foram encontradas 12 espécies e um híbrido natural na Chapada Diamantina, sendo oito citações novas para o estado. Bulbophyllum epiphytum Barb. Rodr., B. laciniatum (Barb. Rodr.) Cogn. e B. napellii Lindl. possuem hábito epifítico; B. involutum Borba, Semir & F. Barros, B. mentosum Barb. Rodr., B. roraimense Rolfe, B. weddellii (Lindl.) Rchb. f. e B. ×cipoense Borba & Semir ocorrem exclusivamente como rupícolas; já B. chloropterum Rchb. f., B. cribbianum Toscano, B. ipanemense Hoehne, B. manarae Foldats e B. plumosum (Barb. Rodr.) Cogn. possuem hábito facultativo. Bulbophyllum ipanemense é a espécie mais abundante na Chapada Diamantina, e as populações da Bahia apresentam uma ampla variação morfológica em relação às populações da região Sudeste. Bulbophyllum manarae e B. roraimense consideradas endêmicas da Venezuela, são citadas pela primeira vez para o Brasil, fortalecendo a hipótese de uma estreita relação entre as formações deste país e da Chapada Diamantina. The Chapada Diamantina is located in the northern region of the Espinhaço Range, and its main vegetation type is the "campo rupestre", but other vegetational types also occur such as gallery forests, cerrado and caatinga, and the whole region presents high endemism. Bulbophyllum Thouars is the largest genus of Orchidaceae, with nearly 1.200 species. Fifty-eight Bulbophyllum species are recognized from Brazil, and only five of them were until recently reported for the Bahia state. In this study we present a survey of the Bulbophyllum species occurring in the Chapada Diamantina, based on herbarium and field collections. We found 12 Bulbophyllum species and one natural hybrid in the Chapada Diamantina, eight of which are new occurrences for the state. Bulbophyllum epiphytum Barb. Rodr., B. laciniatum (Barb. Rodr.) Cogn., and B. napellii Lindl. are epiphytic; B. involutum Borba, Semir & F. Barros, B. mentosum Barb. Rodr., B. roraimense Rolfe, B. weddellii (Lindl.) Rchb. f., and B. ×cipoense Borba & Semir occur exclusively as rupicolous; and B. chloropterum Rchb. f., B. cribbianum Toscano, B. ipanemense Hoehne, B. manarae Foldats and B. plumosum (Barb. Rodr.) Cogn. present facultative habit. Bulbophyllum ipanemense is the most abundant species of the genus in the Chapada Diamantina, and the populations of this species in Bahia present several morphological differences in relation to the populations of Southeastern region. B. manarae and B. roraimense, formerly considered as endemic to Venezuela, are mentioned for the first time to Brazil, strengthening the hypothesis of a close relationship between the flora of that country and the Chapada Diamantina.

The floral biology, mating systems and phenology of Pseudolaelia corcovadensis (Orchidaceae), in the "Estação de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Ambiental de Peti", São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, Minas Gerais state was studied. This species flowers from April to September, with a higher availability of flowers in June and July. The flowers are dark-pink, strongly zygomorphic, and have osmophores and nectar-guides absorbing ultraviolet light. However, the flowers of P. corcovadensis do not present nectar and are pollinated by Bombus (Fervidobombus) atratus Franklin, 1913 (Hymenoptera: Apidae) by deceit. Apparently, the flowers do not form a model-mimic pair with other species in the community, but mimic a generalized melittophilous food-flower. As a consequence, visits are very rare and fruit set is low (18%). Pseudolaelia corcovadensis is self-compatible and presents inbreeding depression in the early stages of development. The phylogenetic position of the genus Pseudolaelia and studies on floral biology in related genera suggest that melittophyly and self-compatibility are basal characters in the subtribe Laeliinae, with subsequent adaptive radiation to pollination by hummingbirds, Lepidoptera, Diptera and other Hymenoptera. Foi estudada a biologia floral, o sistema reprodutivo e a fenologia de Pseudolaelia corcovadensis (Orchidaceae), na Estação de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Ambiental de Peti, São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, Minas Gerais. A espécie floresce de abril a setembro, com pico de floração em junho e julho. As flores são rosa-escuro, fortemente zigomorfas, possuem osmóforos e guias de néctar que absorvem luz ultra-violeta. Porém, as flores de P. corcovadensis não possuem néctar, sendo polinizadas por Bombus (Fervidobombus) atratus Franklin, 1913 (Hymenoptera: Apidae) através de mecanismo de engodo. Aparentemente as flores não formam um par mimético com outra espécie na comunidade, mas mimetizam um modelo generalizado de flor melitófila que oferece recompensa. Como conseqüência, as visitas são muito raras e a frutificação é relativamente baixa (18%). Pseudolaelia corcovadensis é autocompatível e apresenta depressão endogâmica nos estágios iniciais de desenvolvimento. O posicionamento filogenético do gênero Pseudolaelia, aliado a estudos de biologia floral em gêneros próximos, permite indicar que melitofilia e autocompatibilidade sejam características basais na subtribo Laeliinae, com posterior radiação adaptativa para polinização por beija-flores, Lepidoptera, Diptera e outros Hymenoptera.
