Treball desenvolupat en el marc del programa "European Project Semester". The Railway Museum of Catalonia has been based in Vilanova i la Geltrú since 1990. It houses one of the biggest collections of locomotives in Europe and shares and promotes historical and technological knowledge of the railways and about trains and locomotives with more than thousands of visitors each year. Many of these visitors come for educational purposes on school trips. The Vilanova Campus of the UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) is situated next to the museum and the two entities have collaborated on several projects in the past to promote knowledge of the industrial heritage of the railways, to highlight the role of engineering in the past, present and future of the railways and to encourage the engineers of the future to study engineering courses at the UPC in Vilanova. The project has been carried out within the umbrella of the European Project Semester (EPS) and involves the Railway Museum and the UPC joining forces to promote both the industrial heritage of the railways and to foster the possibility of future engineering studies among primary school students. The main aim of this project then was to design activities for primary school students (in three age groups from 6 to 12 years old) when on school trips to the Railway museum and that also encompass awareness raising of the engineering school in Vilanova and its role in moulding engineers of the future. The project has been carried out by four international students and involved various stages. Initially, gaining an understanding of the museum’s expectations and the scope of the project was key. Then, in order to create the activities for the primary school children it was necessary to gain insights into their educational needs, objectives and curriculum competencies. Visits to primary schools and to the museum, accompanying primary school children on school visits, were conducted to observe the children during the visit and gain insights into their interactions. Interviews with teachers and head teachers were also conducted and proposals for activities passed through creative, testing and refining stages including feedback from education professionals. The results of the project include a redesign of the museum visit for primary school children. This is now more interactive and highlights the importance of trains and engineers in the future. A character has also been created to appeal to the young visitors and to guide them through the visit as well as the activities designed to be completed at different stops along the tour as well as a take-home booklet for the children to complete during the visit. After usability testing was carried out and further feedback from educational professionals obtained, a new guide script for the primary school tour, a character, a time capsule, an introductory video for the activity, activity booklets and flyers to promote the activity have been delivered to the museum.
