ABSTRACT This study examines the biopolitical borders of Türkiye. On the one hand, Türkiye deserves attention as a destination country that received millions of Syrian asylum seekers after the outbreak of the war in Syria and hundreds of thousands of migrants from other surrounding countries since the early 2010s. Yet, the country can also be seen as an origin and a transit country since a significant number of citizens and foreigners have been emigrating to Western countries from Türkiye. Recently, the number of educated and highly skilled people from Türkiye migrating to other countries has escalated. Given its unique position as a receiving, transit and origin country, Türkiye merits special investigation into the consequences of migration and border policies on domestic biopolitics. This study differs from existing literature in that it focuses on the biopolitical implications of migration from and to Türkiye. The study shows that even though the biopolitical borders of the country seem inadequate to protect domestic biopolitics, they are still discernible for migrants. Although a large number of Syrians, Afghans and other foreign nationals have crossed the national borders of Türkiye, they still face biopolitical borders. Türkiye's biopolitical borders not only function to establish a hierarchy that subordinates migrants to citizens but also create hierarchies among different migrant groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article highlights an attempt to define the system of criminal offenses related to crossing the State border of Ukraine in an illegal manner and/or for a criminal purpose. It is proved that criminal offenses under Articles 332, 332-1, 332-2, 333, 334 of Section XIV of the Special Part of the Criminal Code of Ukraine encroach not only on the inviolability of the state borders of Ukraine, but also on border security, which is a component of Ukraine's national security. The author establishes the difference between crossing the State border of Ukraine, transportation of goods across the State border of Ukraine and transportation of persons across the State border of Ukraine. Based on this comparison, it is determined that crossing the State border of Ukraine in an illegal manner and/or for a criminal purpose is characterized by the physical movement of a person across the State border of Ukraine without the purpose of moving a certain product or other object. In addition, unlike illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine, crossing this border in an illegal manner and/or for a criminal purpose is characterized by the direct physical movement of a person across the state border of Ukraine, which in itself is criminalized if carried out in an illegal manner and/or for a criminal purpose, while illegal transportation across the state border of Ukraine is characterized by such a property as indirectness, which is of paramount importance for criminal law enforcement of border security. The system of criminal offenses related to crossing the state border of Ukraine illegally and/or for criminal purposes should include terrorist financing in the form of providing, collecting or storing any assets directly or indirectly with the intent to use them or with the knowledge that they will be used in whole or in part for any purpose by an individual terrorist or terrorist group (organization) to cross the state border of Ukraine for terrorist purposes (Art. 258-5), crossing the state border of Ukraine for terrorist purposes (to carry out activities that are considered terrorist according to the law) (Art. 258-6), illegal crossing of the state border of Ukraine (Art. 332-2), violation of international flight rules (Art. 334) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This article investigates former asylum seeker, Kurdish-Iranian Behrouz Boochani's efforts to decolonize truth-telling, especially in his prize-winning novel, No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison, in which he theorizes direct links between the colonization of Indigenous Australians and Australia's treatment of refugees. No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison both has borders as a theme and crosses borders by utilizing disparate literary forms to great effect. I explore truth-telling in Boochani's work through the lenses of border thinking, as theorized by Gloria Anzaldúa and Walter Mignolo, and heterotopia (other-place), as theorized by Michel Foucault. Boochani describes himself as 'A shepherd who reads Foucault', and states that it is possible to 'examine Manus Prison using a Foucauldian framework and apply his philosophical critique of the prison, the mental asylum and psychology.' In this article, I ask how Finnish border guards negotiate their role as human decision-makers in frontline border checks in the current era of datafication and technologisation. I address this question by delving into the key decision made in frontline border checks: namely, whether to let travellers pass or to send them for further inspection. This decision is pivotal in the sorting of people crossing borders, that is, who is admitted, who is held up, and who is turned away. Through an analysis that borrows from Institutional Ethnography and argumentation analysis, based on interviews with border guards and observation at the Border and Coast Guard Academy, I show that even as security authorities are seeking to increase the use of technologies and automation, Finnish frontline border guards present their own discretionary powers as unchallenged by technology and automation and argue that human feelings, senses, and experience are key to the formation of suspicion at the border. Storytelling is placed at the centre of the decision-making process, in which suspicion is directed at those whose stories do not 'fit' or 'feel right'. Border guards locate their professional skill and worth in their discretionary powers, manifested in their human ability to evaluate the entity of the 'story-human': the body, the story, the documents, and the setting. Data systems and technology only offer pieces. These insights exemplify how law translates into the sorting of humans at borders and can also guide future studies of street-level bureaucrats re-orienting in an increasingly automated world. Approximately one quarter of all U.S. air-passenger trips (involving US airlines only) are to and from foreign destinations, which accounted for around 4.5% of total US person-miles in 2019. Travel demand modeling and US travel surveys often overlook this overseas travel. Therefore, this study assesses travel demand, patterns, and costs (in time and money) between major US and foreign airports worldwide, as well as ground trips to Mexico and Canada, using 2019 DB1B flight ticket data, the 2016–2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), and border crossing data. A model of trip distribution, from 334 US airports to 1,028 foreign airports, shows how trip flows fall by about 41% with every 7-hour increase in flight start-to-end time. Destinations hosting tourist attractions (e.g, London, Barcelona, Milan, Paris, Dubai) are also a practically significant variable in the model, increasing flows by 48%. Flight fares (for one-way itineraries) increase by $0.078 per mile for coach class and $0.163 per mile for business class and higher, according to feasible generalized least-squares models. These fares are higher for English-speaking destinations than non-English-speaking destinations, as well as for trips from April to June (as compared to January to March with similar distances and seating types). Passports are the number one form of individual identification when crossing borders resulting in counterfeit or modified passports being used to allow illegal travel. Here we report on the use of Diamond Dye to detect cells deposited by touch onto parts of the photograph page of a passport. The passport page was divided into a grid of 11 rectangles of approximately equal dimensions. Thumbprints were deposited at 10 of the 11 squares, with the 11th left blank as a negative control. The location and number of deposited cells were determined and recorded. Cellular material was removed from each square separately, using a moistened swab or a tapelift. Tapelifting was better suited for the substrate resulting in an increase in DNA recovered. The highest total quantity of DNA isolated from the 10 samples post extraction was 0.162 ng. Short tandem repeat data were obtained from all 10 samples using the GlobalFilerTM PCR Amplification Kit. The DNA profiles were single source or two-person mixtures and the donor was always the major contributor. These data show the potential to visualize cellular material deposited by touch and then generate STR data from an item such as a passport after only brief physical contact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims at fostering response-able pedagogies in the class of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in higher education by working on transnational literature, which is a type of writing that can be regarded as a by-product of today's intense border crossing and global interconnectedness. The intention of this contribution is to allow socially committed professionals in the education field to engage with global issues from their own local position through short stories in English. This article begins by providing a conceptual framework where key terms, such as feminist solidarities and transnational identities, are addressed, and where the methodological approach is briefly explained. Then, two case studies are developed to illustrate the feminist close-reading of works by current transnational women authors: the short story "Treasure" by Oyinkan Braithwaite and "Light" by Lesley Arimah. Happy Together (Wong Kar-Wai, 1997) and The Edge of Heaven (Fatih Akin, 2007) are two films that depict characters in intimate relationships that include geographical mobility. Though that is just one of the similarities they share, the two films reveal different attitudes toward life and death. The Edge of Heaven educates its audience through fear by portraying innocent people dying, while Happy Together could be interpreted more as a national allegory, given the depiction of a historical figure's death. Nonetheless, the aim of this research is to argue that the two films are similar in that they both tell tales about revealing the experiences of moving across borders and living in cosmopolitan places. Salvador Plascencia's The People of Paper (2005) tells the story of borderland characters moving between fictionalised versions of Guadalajara, Mexico, and the city of El Monte in the United States. This essay argues that the novel evades reductive readings within a simplistic framework of 'Latinx fiction' by rendering an aesthetic register of ambiguity and ambivalence, and a narrative politics of openness. The book is not only a metafictional comment on the nature of storytelling in general, but also on the dilemma of telling borderland stories within overdetermined political contexts. Plascencia uses allusive imagery from the political realities of the borderland (trauma, wounds, the border as dividing line) to highlight the symbolic indeterminacies of physical and abstract borders and their crossings, and about the political ambivalences that necessarily accompany such an endeavour. The essay focusses especially on how the novel navigates its speculative landscapes and the dissolution of geopolitical boundaries in a metafictional mode which self-consciously acknowledges the dangers inherent in the aestheticisation of historically situated suffering. The content of the article The activity of the Scottish cinematographer John Mackenzie in Bulgaria in 1905 fully corresponds to the theme of the issue Crossing and/or Blowing Up the Borders as it follows both the filming activity of a foreigner in our country, carried out in the period of the early cinema (poorly studied until recently), and the distribution of his footage around the world -- the United Kingdom, Western Europe, Australia... Mackenzie himself crossed many borders during his life, as described in his book Rambles in Many Lands (1910), to eventually become an American citizen and live in the United States. The experiment was conducted during kharif, 2021 (June-November) at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Warangal, Telangana, India to evaluate rice cultures for resistance against gall midge (biotype 4M). Screening of 200 rice cultures developed in different research stations of PJTSAU, Hyderabad was done against gall midge along with susceptible check under natural field conditions at RARS, Warangal. Susceptible check TN-1 was grown for every 9 entries and also as border rows. Observations on gall midge incidence were recorded twice at 31-34 and 58-62 days after transplanting and then percentage of silver shoots was worked out. Observations were recorded by counting the total number of plants, damaged plants, total number of tillers and total number of silver shoots. At 58-62 DAT, 90-100% hill (plant) damage and 9.72 to 21.79% tiller damage was recorded in TN-1. Gall midge incidence among test entries was ranged from 0-100% hill (plant) damage and 0-16.67% silver shoots. Among the 200 test entries evaluated against gall midge, three entries viz., RDR-2751, IBT-GM-7 and IBT-GM-36 had shown highly resistant reaction (Nil damage), eight entries viz., JGL-36147, JMS24B, KNM 12392, KNM 11596, IBT WGL-2, IBT WGL-21, IBT WGL-31 and MLT-E-K21-66 had shown resistant reaction (<1% silver shoots). Seventy-four entries had shown moderately resistant reaction (1-5% silver shoots) against local gall midge population. All the moderately resistant entries recorded >10% hill (plant) damage. In March 2020, the 'contact line' between the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics and the rest of Ukraine was sealed off. Crossing this de facto border was a precondition and an obstacle for residents of the non-government-controlled territories to access their citizenship entitlements. This article explores how movement across the 'contact line' was restricted and reconfigured during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and how this affected state–citizen relations in the region. Because of the Irish border's troubled history and heightened symbolism, filmmakers have since long relied on the border as a setting to thematise issues of national identity, belonging, and trauma. Departing from the concept of border poetics this article takes films featuring the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland as its topic of inquiry. Beyond compiling a border film archive in which all cinematic representation of the Irish border is collected, a close reading is conducted of border mobilities in a sample of 43 narrative fiction films (1937–2021). The article's textual analysis makes the distinction between three border mobilities (1) border crossing, (2) border inhabiting, and (3) border (re)visiting, to investigate how filmmakers utilise the Irish border for various narrative, formal, and ideological ends. This paper examines the migration aspirations of young people from the remote border area of Kinmen, Taiwan and their migratory trajectories—internal migration to the main island of Taiwan and cross‐border migration to China. Located between Taiwan and China, Kinmen is an offshore island with a long history of migration. Based on multi‐site ethnographic data from 30 young people, this paper explores their migratory trajectories and aspirations concerning the instability of socio‐political context and the growing social and cultural inequalities of today's globalised world, China's rise in particular. It contributes to the population geography literature by using migration aspiration as a critical lens to analyse how young people negotiate their borderland identity through mobility under the changing cross‐strait political economy. The paper emphasises the importance of considering the transformation of regional economy and culture when analysing youth migration experiences. In recognising the socially grounded aspects of migration aspiration, it highlights the fluid and transformative nature of migration to enrich our knowledge of how marginalised youth form subjectivities and negotiate complex identities through migration. AbstractThis paper is an exploratory study on the Bangladeshi immigrants who have crossed the border between India and Bangladesh during two historical points of time. The central focus of the paper is to understand the process of identity constitution and reconstitution among these immigrants over different generations. It’s based on the focused ethnographic study of the community with tools of FGD and interview-schedule. The paper attempts to grasp different aspects of the identity construction of the community. It tries to capture the “trilemma” of negotiating identities of the Bangladeshi immigrants in Odisha, an eastern province of India. This trilemma unfolds with different levels of negotiations pertaining to their status of Refugees questioning their conception of nation and citizenship, fitting into a distinguished host identity and connecting with their Bengali community. In this essay, I engage in autoethnographic reflection on my role as a native researcher, addressing questions and issues related to evaluating a researcher's complete-membership in Critical Complete-Member Ethnography (CCME). I revisit CCME as a critical communication research method and introduce two contextual elements –the geopolitics of transnational mobility and cultural belongingness– to enhance the depth of self-reflection that CCME can encourage researchers to undertake. Specifically, I discuss these two components within the framework of nativeness, as these factors often involve the challenges faced by international researchers when they claim their native or insider position upon returning to their non-Western homelands to conduct ethnography. In my autoethnographic reflection, I draw on my fieldwork experience in South Korea as an instance, focusing on different conditions that destabilized my native position: institutional regulations of crossing the border during the global pandemic, my growing feeling of in-betweenness, and my performance of U.S. academic membership in the field. Through reflection, I demonstrate that nativeness is not consistently given or entitled but changing and fluctuating in different times and contexts. Ultimately, I argue that in-flux aspects of my native position complicate and expand methodological considerations for determining and accessing a researcher's complete-membership and their epistemological intimacy with their communities in CCME. Informed by Asian Critical Theory and the literature on borders and borderlands, this paper examines three autoethnographic encounters situated in various contexts—a U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection at an airport, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the border crossing between home and a child care center. By unpacking sociohistorical discourses involved with various acts of border crossing in the three different contexts, I problematize implicit and explicit power dynamics and negotiations of differences that are often normalized and disregarded from a minoritized perspective of an Asian migrant mother. The following research question guides my inquiry: How does an Asian migrant mother-educator navigate and negotiate racial, ethnic, and cultural borders as a minoritized individual in the U.S. society? In particular, autoethnographic accounts of an Asian migrant mother offers an alternate epistemological orientation in various contexts where the colonialist and imperialist discourses are prominent and often go underexamined. The paper concludes with a poem titled "ABC," where I reflect on personal experiences as an Asian migrant and ponder upon the experiences of the next generation of Asian American children. Categorising certain forms of human movement as 'migration' and others as 'mobility' has far-reaching consequences. We introduce the migration–mobility nexus as a framework for other researchers to interrogate the relationship between these two categories of human movement and explain how they shape different social representations. Our framework articulates four ideal-typical interplays between categories of migration and categories of mobility: continuum (fluid mobilities transform into more stable forms of migration and vice versa), enablement (migration requires mobility, and mobility can trigger migration), hierarchy (migration and mobility are political categories that legitimise hierarchies of movement) and opposition (migration and mobility are pitted against each other). The notion of vulnerability is gaining traction in EU border protection. On the one hand, the concept refers to vulnerable migrants and their affectedness by insecurity and violence. On the other, it indicates the susceptibility of borders to irregular crossings and cross-border crime. Both forms of vulnerability are assessed through dedicated procedures under the umbrella of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex. To make sense of these seemingly contradictory conceptual and practical uses of vulnerability, we draw on feminist postcolonial scholarship in security studies and political geography. We argue that a shared colonial matrix of gendered and racialised meanings and problematisations enables analogies between borders and bodies as (un-)deserving of protection. In a discourse-theoretical analysis of Frontex documents, we show how the ambiguous use of vulnerability legitimises the EU border regime and its security practices by constructing EU bordering as neutral and objective and EU borders as objects of care. We conclude that vulnerability becomes increasingly important for normalising the EU's violent borders in the context of the EU's broader claims to liberal values of freedom, protection, and human rights. There has been a significant growth in the number of international students enrolled in initial teacher education programmes for early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand (Education Counts, 2024). This reflects the increasing number of teachers from overseas entering the early childhood education workforce. Educational practices and pedagogy differ across cultures and contexts which might prompt a culturally responsive pedagogical reorientation for migrant teachers. In this article, we examine migrant teachers' readiness to teach from a strengths-based cultural perspective. As migrant teachers ourselves, we explore the likely challenges faced by teachers in relation to cultural shifts, understanding of the ECE curriculum, and the resulting tensions underpinning their pedagogical practices. The US and Mexican labor markets are closely linked through migrant workers and remittances, and changes in remittance flow may alter labor allocations in the origin households. In this paper, we investigate how the prevalence of COVID-19 in the United States affected the local labor market in Mexico. We construct a Mexican municipality-level measure of exposure to COVID-19 in the United States using data on COVID-19 prevalence across the country and data on migrants' destinations in various states. We find a positive effect of COVID-19 exposure in the United States on hours worked among workers in Mexico, yet no significant effects were found for local wages. We also find that the effect varies across subgroups, which indicates that the responses in hours worked depend on household dynamics, the nature of the occupation-specific tasks, and migration intensity. Finally, we document the potential mechanism behind the effect on hours worked, that is, through the changes in remittances sent to the origin municipalities in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractIn this study, we examine the gendered experiences of Chinese returnees within a double liminality formed by prolonged border crossing and the COVID-19. Through qualitative interviews, we identified three themes based on features of liminality observed by Victor Turner: 1) gender norms ostensibly challenged but actually reinforced in the anti-structure, 2) kinship and romantic relationships renegotiated for comradeship, and 3) gender awareness gained through personal reflexivity. We seek to uncover the profound effects of these experiences within a complex space-time construct between points of departure from host countries and arrival at home. We hope to enrich scholarly discussions of gender dynamics observed in transnational mobility during a global health crisis and facilitate policy makers’ recognition of the gendered disparities in treatment for physical and mental suffering during a pandemic border-crossing. This paper reveals how contemporary immigrant authors challenge the conventions of autobiography as conceptualized by Philippe Lejeune in self-referential novels that blur the boundaries between fiction and reality, storytelling and truth-telling. We investigate the reality-fiction binary in the works of such authors as J.M. Coetzee, Salman Rushdie, W.G. Sebald, Aleksandar Hemon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Junot Díaz, and Ocean Vuong, and show how their self-referential literary productions alter the way we perceive notions of truth and authenticity in contemporary literature. By combining a reader-oriented analysis with a postructuralist inquiry on writing and reading, we aim at providing a more comprehensive understanding of life writing in transnational immigrant narratives. This paper focuses on a recurring scene in fiction about emigration, the crossing of physical and geographical borders. The practice of crossing borders is an act of separation from the home, the familiar, and can be understood as a trigger for the later consequences of emigration, since this act creates the situation in which the emigrant experiences himself as a stranger, as a different person in the destination. In the literature on Eastern Europe, there have been many texts that thematize the act of crossing borders, but this thesis will focus on how the first—and to this extent most prominent— border crossing leading to emigration can be linked to the phenomenon of the miracle and, at the same time, to the region of Banat. In 1960, Jung lamented psychology's limited impact on global fate. Although Fordham tried to reassure him that Jungians were promoting his work, Jung was looking from the other end of the telescope, seeing the need to rescue humanity from its one‐sidedness that would ultimately lead to nuclear conflict. Astronomical evidence, such as the Fermi paradox, echoes Jung's concerns about likely self‐destruction. Rather than promoting Jungian ideas to interested groups, the imperative lies in identifying crucial messages for global survival and engaging the public in them. Science provides some useful lessons because its concerted efforts over centuries led to the gradual integration of scientific thinking into the public psyche. These lessons suggest that, to cross the border from the Jungian to wider public domain, compromises are necessary, such as simplifying messages and making engagement enchanting and practical. Analytical psychology's task goes beyond one individual, group, or even generation, and a debate is needed to begin to form a consensus on the way ahead. Some initial suggestions are made for adopting terminology the public can relate to, focusing on the transcendent function as the main vehicle to overcome one‐sidedness and conflict, and using figures like Nelson Mandela to demonstrate practical application. The purpose of this study was on understanding and interpreting five minoritised pre-service teachers' past educational experiences that impacted their first-time science microteaching experiences in a science teaching methods course. The study is unique because it illuminates and contributes to the literature on the importance of minoritised prospective teachers' educational experiences in their pre-service preparation and how these experiences challenge or contradict the urgency of equitable science instruction in traditional teacher education instructional discourse. The study draws on the literature on border crossing as a guiding theoretical framework, and phenomenology as a guiding methodological framework to analyse first time science teaching experiences. Data included videos and written narratives of first-time science teaching experiences. Analysis indicated that past educational experience of being left out in doing science underscored minoritised pre-service teachers' first-time science teaching experiences. Furthermore, they had created navigation strategies to counter the past educational experiences by challenging and modifying science teaching routines and devising equitable ways to use science teaching resources to cultivate a sense of belonging. The study suggests that future science education research would benefit from attention to minoritised pre-service teachers' experiences used to challenge or contradict past educational inequities. This paper proposed a noble face recognition and biometric encryption technique for the biometric passport by applying encrypted biometric data encoded into the High-Capacity Color Two-Dimensional (HCC2D) Code to secure the biometric data. The proposed biometric encryption method is attained by applying the Secure Force (SF) algorithm and encoding it into the HCC2D code. The face recognition technology is achieved by combining the Viola-Jones (VJ) algorithm and the Local Binary Patterns (LBP) algorithm to extract the facial features and generate the template. This method will ensure the safety and security of a biometric passport from unauthorized access without knowing the passport holder. This meta-synthesis crosses international borders by analyzing successful principalship across nine countries. With careful, detailed, systematic, and analytic synthesis, it critically explores research-informed understandings of successful principal leadership over the last 20 years. The paper is an interim report of reviews of the 85 articles and 23 chapters produced by the International Successful School Principal Project (ISSPP), the largest, longest-running international research project in this field. In that project, success is defined as the principal's ability to grow and sustain students' academic, personal, and social developments and achievements over time. The results add to existing knowledge of how successful school principals achieve success by examining high-quality, published case study evidence from Australia, Cyprus, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Spain, the UK, and the US. Results suggest common sets of core values, qualities, and practices among school principals, regardless of national contexts, conditions, or cultures. Because the research design is multi-perspective and multi-layered, the case studies also show significant, context-informed differences in timing, pace, and extent of application of improvement strategies. Thus, the findings of this synthesis paint a thorough and cohesive picture of who successful principals are and what they do over time at the global level to achieve success, as they navigate values-led school success in different contexts and improvement phases within complex internal and external ecological chrono-, macro-, exo-, meso-, and microsystems. Executive Summary: This article explores how undocumented border crosser (UBC) deaths are counted as well as mis- and under-counted across the US southwest, and proposes a suite of policy remediations to standardize this process. An accurate count of UBC recovered remains is vital to understanding the scope of fatalities associated with border crossing, providing evidence accounting for the reciprocal relationship between US border enforcement and the incidence of migration-related death. To meaningfully intervene, it is insufficient to advocate only for more robust individual death investigations, though this is pivotal to forensically identify UBC decedents and unite them with their loved ones. Though identification and reunification of UBCs are the elements of forensic care most commonly attributed as humanitarian, the relationship between forensic investigation and international humanitarian principles is equally about accumulating primary evidence for policy intervention and justice claims on behalf of those who wrongfully die. Even if existing counting mechanisms do not provide the means for establishing this attribution between border-crossing deaths and border enforcement policy, this article lays out an argument for why they must do so and it makes recommendations for how this can take place. Necessarily, this article begins with a critique of existing mechanisms for counting UBC deaths, from the federal observation of such deaths by Customs and Border Protection, to the bureaucratic mechanisms for the collection of vital statistics authored at the local level. It then suggests means for improving accurate counting using the US Standard Certificate of Death. It particularly explores two aspects of the certificate, Manner of Death reporting and a section that asks death filers to describe how the death occurred, sections 37 and 43 respectively. Finally, it explores historical precedent for altering the standard death form at local and then national levels, positing that select amendments to the existing death certificate would be useful for standardizing how medicolegal death filers across the border and beyond can more accurately enumerate and characterize UBC deaths. Policy recommendations include the following, in order of immediacy: ● Jurisdictions across the US southwest must adopt standardized criteria for counting fatalities believed to be associated with undocumented border crossing. ● Despite some local formalization of UBC counting, current means of representing UBC status in vital records remains ad hoc across the US southwest and existing mechanisms for counting elude wider scale national recognition in vital statistics. The most straightforward and reliable method of standardization to ensure systematic representation of UBC deaths across the borderlands would be a UBC checkbox on the death certificate. This would require cooperation with state-level public health departments and legislatures. Precedent exists for changing the death form at the state level, facilitating, in some cases, for eventual inclusion of new components of the death certificate to be adopted on the US Standard Certificate of Death. This is recommended as a longer-term goal. ● Finally, there must be a means to characterize the deadly relationship between UBC fatalities and US border enforcement policy and practice in vital records where UBC Manners of Death are most often characterized as "Natural" or "Accidental." Both are inaccurate. Unilaterally ensuring an accurate count leaves room for a trend already well underway in which agencies associated with border enforcement have cast UBC deaths as simply due to unfortunate heat-related accidents, resulting in legislation aimed to mitigate deaths that fails to address the role of border policy in causing deaths. Over the last decade, Belgium's Dutch-speaking region of Flanders has been marked by a nationalist impulse. This is most clearly visible in the discourses and electoral success of nationalist parties, which call for a greater degree of Flemish independence from the Belgian state and its southern, French-speaking region of Wallonia. This article analyzes how a certain strand within contemporary Flemish cinema relates to such Flemish nationalist discourses. This is done by investigating the representation of Wallonia and its citizens as a national other in four mainstream films: Bullhead (2011), Cub (2014), The Ardennes (2015) and Blind Spot (2017). Through structuring their narratives around the border crossing of a Flemish protagonist into Walloon territory, these films activate a series of nationalist stereotypes and antagonistic discourses that help heighten the Belgian community conflict. The Walloons are framed as national others that either pose a threat or signify a burden to the Flemish protagonist. Moreover, Wallonia itself becomes a hostile space that is imbued with transgressive qualities, capable of corrupting the cohesion of the Flemish self. This representational regime is aesthetically and thematically underlined by evoking a type of 'Walloon Gothic', in which association with the Walloon soil becomes synonymous with a sense of spiritual degradation. This study assessed the impacts of a toll information sign with different toll lane configurations on queue length and collision risk at a toll plaza with an estimated high percentage of heavy vehicles (HVs). The toll information sign displays information about different toll payment methods for cars and HVs upstream of the toll booth. The impacts were assessed for the toll plaza of the Gordie Howe International Bridge under construction at the Windsor–Detroit international border crossing using a traffic simulation model. Results show that the toll information sign upstream of the toll plaza and converting the toll lanes with multiple toll payment methods to electronic toll collection (ETC)-only lanes reduced queue length and collision risk. However, increasing the number of HV-only lanes for a higher percentage of HVs increased lane-change collision risk. Thus, it is recommended that toll lane configurations be changed based on the percentage of HVs to reduce collision risk at a toll plaza. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our analysis focuses on the determinants of electoral participation among migrants, considering individual factors—gender and age—and variables from their countries of origin, such as economic, political, and institutional aspects. We specifically look at Chile, where migrants are allowed to vote in all elections after acquiring five years of permanent residency. Utilizing a comprehensive administrative census covering over 70 million voters, including 1.2 million migrants, from 2012 to 2020, our findings reveal several key patterns: Gender and age significantly influence voting behavior, with higher turnout among women and older migrants. Additionally, migrants from wealthier nations tend to vote less compared to those from poorer countries. Furthermore, the presence of compulsory voting in the origin country significantly increases participation among migrants, especially those from less democratic or non-democratic countries. The border river of the Evros/Meriç/Maritsa has been shaped during the century since its demarcation by the Lausanne peace treaty. Over this period, a dense overlap of environmental, geopolitical, legal and cultural actors has turned it into both a riverised border and a borderised river. The border regime appropriates the riverine characteristics of flow, erosion, mud, turbulence and fog as much as it is founded on military technology, international law, agricultural and conservation practices, resource logistics, border crossing and the denial thereof. Here, the river's movement of sand and alluvium has become an agent in the policing of the river border. Drawing on interviews with asylum seekers, locals, forensic pathologists, legal scholars and fish scientists, this paper weaves field research, primarily undertaken on the Greek side, with a historic and ecosystemic perspective of a century‐old border that has become a hotspot for violent practices. These practices themselves harness the uncertain physical conditions that the riverscape affords. In this article we argue that the disjunctures of the river's dynamic geomorphology and the history of demarcation of the median line frame the contemporary politics of mobility of those illegalised by the border regime. In the ambiguous territorial pockets produced by the movement of the river away from the median line of 1926, islands of hyperlegality have been produced where state violence takes place with impunity. The reason for the spread of this phenomenon is the lack of control over border crossings, so the research aimed to identify the reasons behind the spread of drug abuse through a field study on the inmates of the Anbar Rehabilitation Centre by identifying the aura that the user forms about the drug, as well as the role of psychological pressure suffered by the addict, in addition tothe role of psychological pressure suffered by the addict, in addition to identifying the role of media propaganda in pushing the user to addiction by answering the main question, What are the most important reasons and factors leading to drug abuse by identifying the social aura? A questionnaire was developed by reviewing the previous literature and was subjected to apparent honesty by presenting it to a number of specialists in the field of education and psychology, and the coefficient of honesty was calculated, where the coefficient of 80/0 of the research results were significant indicators that appeared through statistical analysis of the study sample for the three dimensions: aura, psychological pressure relief, and media propaganda in pushing the user to addiction. In the aura dimension, the paragraph I expect drugs to give the individual strength to face life difficulties ranked first with an arithmetic mean of 4.45, "I believe that drugs are a unique magical experience" came in second place, and "I expect drugs to contribute to increasing thinking" came in third place, while in the psychological pressure dimension, "I believe that drugs are the best way to eliminate worries" came in first place with a mean of 4. In 2014, the Australian Government introduced the New Colombo Plan (NCP), whereby undergraduate students would become 'informal ambassadors' enhancing Australia's 'soft power' within the Asia-Pacific region. Participation by students, universities, host organisations and communities expanded rapidly before Australia's pandemic-driven closure of international borders. This hiatus has afforded a space for reflection upon the NCP, including the pivotal study tour supervisor role. Supervisors assume informal responsibilities beyond their formal roles, often in unfamiliar settings, with scarce recognition. Their assumption of responsibility is conceptualised here within a formal-informal spectrum, which underpins an evaluation of how the role might be accorded greater recognition. This photo essay reports on two TriWadWalks, which were 5-day landscape explorations into the Wadden Sea region of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. These walks were organised by six universities to foster collaboration in research, teaching, and knowledge creation. A key and recurring observation was that the diverse composition of the group, and travelling through the landscape with an open agenda, distinguished the TriWadWalks from everyday excursions or fieldwork. Our experiences exemplify how being out there in the world, talking to people, and engaging with the landscape and with each other creates human-environment oriented landscape-understandings, in which perspectives blend and (disciplinary) borders are crossed. Building on the TriWadWalk experiences, we see the potential for this collaborative approach to be(come) a transdisciplinary knowledge building tool to be used in the planning and governance of the vulnerable Wadden Sea landscape, and for the education and 'bildung' of future landscape professionals. Most industries, especially the IT related sectors, have experienced colossal growth and the production of information at an incredibly fast rate, making data protection laws an essential requirement across national and international realms. This paper aims at comparing the changes in data protection laws and analysing the distinctive features of various national laws and global standards. It presents important global regulations, including the GDPR in the EU, the CCPA in the USA, and other key national frameworks. Moreover, it considers recent and future changes in the cross border data flows, the nature and scope of harmonisation by International organisations and the consequences brought to the business entities and individuals. Through evaluating these aspects, the paper intends to present systemic analysis as to the current status of data protection legislation and their effectiveness in advancing data protection internationally. Since 2016, digital finances have been disrupted by the introduction of open banking policies, which would facilitate data sharing in this particular industry. The UK and the EU have led this approach through the adoption of legal rules that enabled data sharing between financial institutions, particularly payment services providers, under users’ permission; lately, this has been slowly expanded into other financial services and called open finance. In this respect, certain Latin American countries have followed this, particularly led by industry efforts. In contrast to the EU, where the Digital Single Market facilitates the necessary conditions for sharing data, Latin America is fragmented in this respect. As such, this permission might be a weak basis for enabling a cross-border open finance ecosystem. The surging number of Hindi speakers in recent decades raises an intriguing question: does the expanding influence of Hindi across India lead to the commensurate pan-Indianization or globalization of its literature? Despite its widespread use within the country, Hindi literature often remains overshadowed by Indian English literature (IEL), particularly on the global stage. It appears to be somewhat confined within regional boundaries. However, a transformative event occurred in 2022 when Geetanjali Shree, a Delhi-based Hindi novelist, clinched the prestigious International Booker Prize for her work, Tomb of Sand, originally titled Ret Samadhi in Hindi. The prize was equally shared between Geetanjali Shree, the writer, and Daisy Rockwell, the translator. With this award, Tomb of Sand has emerged as a symbol of Hindi literary translation, heralding a significant transition in the Hindi literary translation scene. This paper aims to explore the challenges and prospects of Hindi literary translation in the era of the great transition, focusing specifically on the translation methods and strategies employed in Tomb of Sand.
