Dirofilaria is a parasite of domestic and wild animals that can infect humans accidentally. It is being reported in increasing numbers from Mediterranean countries like Italy. In India this infection is occasionally being reported. We report three cases of ocular dirofilariasis from the state of Assam presenting as periorbital and subconjunctival cysts. The parasites were identified as Dirofilaria repens. The purpose of this article is to take note of this emerging zoonosis in Assam; also to review literature in the cases reported.

The burning of agricultural straw is a pressing environmental issue, and identifying effective strategies for the rational utilization of straw resources is decisive for achieving sustainable development. Owing to its high carbon content and exceptional stability, straw biochar produced via pyrolysis has emerged as a key focus in multidisciplinary research. However, the efficacy of biochar in mitigating nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from paddy soils is not consistent. A 2-year field experiment was conducted and investigated the impact of biochar derived from two feedstocks (rice straw and wheat straw, pyrolyzed at 450 °C) on N 2 O emissions, global warming potential (GWP), greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), crop yield, and soil quality. The static chamber technique was used for collecting N 2 O gas samples, and concentrations were analyzed through gas chromatography methods. The treatment combinations included BR0 (control), BR1 (NPK at the recommended dose, 120:60:40 kg ha -1 ), BR2 (wheat straw biochar, 5 t ha -1 ), and BR3 (rice straw biochar, 5 t ha -1 ). The results exhibited that cumulative N 2 O emissions from BR2 and BR3 treatments decreased by 10.55% and 13.75% respectively, compared to BR1. Lower GWP and GHGI were observed under both biochar treatments compared with BR1. The highest rice grain yield (3.48 Mg ha -1 ) and NUE (76.72%) were recorded from BR3, which also exhibited the lowest yield-scaled N 2 O emission. We observed positive correlations between soil nitrate, ammonia and water-filled pore spaces, while NUE showed negative correlations with N 2 O emissions. Significant (p < 0.05) improvements in soil quality were also detected in both the biochar treated plots, indicated by increased soil pH, water holding capacity, porosity, and nutrient contents. Overall, the results suggest that applying biochar at a rate of 5 t ha -1 in paddy soil is a viable nutrient management strategy with the potential to reduce reliance on inorganic fertilizers, mitigate N 2 O emissions, and contribute to sustainable food production., (© 2024. Adverse cardiovascular (CV) events have declined in Western countries due at least in part to aggressive risk factor control, including dyslipidemia management. The American and European (Western) dyslipidemia treatment guidelines have contributed significantly to the reduction in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) incidence in the respective populations. However, their direct extrapolation to Indian patients does not seem appropriate for the reasons described below. In the US, mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels have markedly declined over the last 2 decades, correlating with a proportional reduction in CV events. Conversely, poor risk factor control and dyslipidemia management have led to increased CV and coronary artery disease (CAD) mortality rates in India. The population-attributable risk of dyslipidemia is about 50% for myocardial infarction, signifying its major role in CV events. In addition, the pattern of dyslipidemia in Indians differs considerably from that in Western populations, requiring unique strategies for lipid management in Indians and modified treatment targets. The Lipid Association of India (LAI) recognized the need for tailored LDL-C targets for Indians and recommended lower targets compared to Western guidelines. For individuals with established ASCVD or diabetes with additional risk factors, an LDL-C target of <50 mg/dL was recommended, with an optional target of ≤30 mg/dL for individuals at extremely high risk. There are several reasons that necessitate these lower targets. In Indian subjects, CAD develops 10 years earlier than in Western populations and is more malignant. Additionally, Indians experience higher CAD mortality despite having lower basal LDL-C levels, requiring greater LDL-C reduction to achieve a comparable CV event reduction. The Indian Council for Medical Research-India Diabetes study described a high prevalence of dyslipidemia among Indians, characterized by relatively lower LDL-C levels, higher triglyceride levels, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to Western populations. About 30% of Indians have hypertriglyceridemia, aggravating ASCVD risk and complicating dyslipidemia management. The levels of atherogenic triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, including remnant lipoproteins, are increased in hypertriglyceridemia and are predictive of CV events. Hypertriglyceridemia is also associated with higher levels of small, dense LDL particles, which are more atherogenic, and higher levels of apolipoprotein B (Apo B), reflecting a higher burden of circulating atherogenic lipoprotein particles. A high prevalence of low HDL-C, which is often dysfunctional, and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels further contribute to the heightened atherogenicity and premature CAD in Indians. Considering the unique characteristics of atherogenic dyslipidemia in Indians, lower LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and Apo B goals compared to Western guidelines are required for effective control of ASCVD risk in Indians. South Asian ancestry is identified as a risk enhancer in the American lipid management guidelines, highlighting the elevated ASCVD risk of Indian and other South Asian individuals, suggesting a need for more aggressive LDL-C lowering in such individuals. Hence, the LDL-C goals recommended by the Western guidelines may be excessively high for Indians and could result in significant residual ASCVD risk attributable to inadequate LDL-C lowering. Further, the results of Mendelian randomization studies have shown that lowering LDL-C by 5-10 mg/dL reduces CV risk by 8-18%. The lower LDL-C targets proposed by LAI can yield these incremental benefits. In conclusion, Western LDL-C targets may not be suitable for Indian subjects, given the earlier presentation of ASCVD at lower LDL-C levels. They may result in greater CV events that could otherwise be prevented with lower LDL-C targets. Hypertension guidelines recommend measuring blood pressure (BP) in both arms at least once. However, this is seldom done due to uncertainties regarding measurement procedure and the implications of finding a clinically important inter-arm BP difference (IAD). This study aimed to provide insight into the prevalence of clinically important IADs in a large Indian primary care cohort. A number of 134678 (37% female) unselected Indian primary care participants, mean age 45.2 (SD 11.9) years, had BP measured in both arms using a standardized, triplicate, automated simultaneous measurement method (Microlife WatchBP Office Afib). On average, there were clinically minor differences in right and left arm BP values: systolic BP 134.4 vs. 134.2 mmHg (p<0.01) and diastolic BP 82.7 vs. 82.6 mmHg (p<0.01), respectively. Prevalence of significant mean systolic IAD between 10 and 15 mmHg was 7813 (5.8%). Systolic IAD ≥ 15 mmHg 2980 (2.2%) and diastolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg 7151 (5.3%). In total, there were 7595 (5.6%) and 8548 (6.3%) participants with BP above the 140/90 mmHg threshold in only the left or right arm, respectively. Prevalence of participants with elevated BP on one arm only was highest in patients with a systolic IAD ≥ 15 mmHg; 19.1% and 13.7%, for left and right arm, respectively. This study shows that a substantial prevalence of IAD exist in Indian primary care patients. BP is above the diagnostic threshold for hypertension in one arm only for 6% of participants. These findings emphasise the importance of undertaking bilateral BP measurement in routine clinical practice. This article is protected by copyright. Lipid-lowering therapy plays a crucial role in reducing adverse cardiovascular (CV) events in patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and familial hypercholesterolemia. Lifestyle interventions along with high-intensity statin therapy are the first-line management strategy followed by ezetimibe. Only about 20-30% of patients who are on maximally tolerated statins reach recommended low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals. Several factors contribute to the problem, including adherence issues, prescription of less than high-intensity statin therapy, and de-escalation of statin dosages, but in patients with very high baseline LDL-C levels, including those with familial hypercholesterolemia and those who are intolerant to statins, it is critical to expand our arsenal of LDL-C-lowering medications. Moreover, in the extreme risk group of patients with an LDL-C goal of ≤30 mg/dL according to the Lipid Association of India (LAI) risk stratification algorithm, there is a significant residual risk requiring the addition of non-statin drugs to achieve LAI recommended targets. This makes bempedoic acid a welcome addition to the existing non-statin therapies such as ezetimibe, bile acid sequestrants, and PCSK9 inhibitors. A low frequency of muscle-related side effects, minimal drug interactions, a significant reduction in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and a lower incidence of new-onset or worsening diabetes make it a useful adjunct for LDL-C lowering. However, the CV outcomes trial results are still pending. Agricultural soil acts as a source and sink of important greenhouse gases (GHGs) like methane (CH 4 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O), and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Rice paddies have been a major concern to scientific community, because they produce the threatening and long-lasting GHGs mainly CH 4 and N 2 O. Around 30% and 11% of global agricultural CH 4 and N 2 O, respectively, emitted from rice fields. Thus, it is urgent to concurrently quantify the fluxes of CH 4 and N 2 O to improve understanding of both the gases from rice fields and to develop mitigation strategies for upcoming climate change reduction. An effort is being made in this review to discuss exclusively the emission of CH 4 and N 2 O under normal and controlled conditions in different locations of India and also addresses the current synthesis of available data on how field and crop management activities influence CH 4 and N 2 O emissions in rice fields. Making changes to conventional crop management regimes could have a significant impact on reducing GHG emissions from rice field. Environmental and agricultural factors related to soil could be easily altered by management practices. So, knowing the mechanism of CH 4 and N 2 O production and release in the rice field and factors controlling the emissions is fundamental to develop well-organized strategies to reduce emissions from rice cultivated soil. This will help the regulatory bodies or policy makers to formulate adequate policies for agricultural farmers to refine the GHG emissions as well as minimize the global climate change.

Agricultural soils are an important source of greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission. The comprehensive effects of nitrogen fertilizer management on N 2 O emission from paddy fields of India have not been evaluated under field conditions. A 2-year field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different nitrogen fertilizers, namely, conventional fertilizer (NPK), starch-coated urea (SCU), neem-coated urea (NCU), and normal urea alone (NUA) on soil quality, grain yield, and N 2 O emission from rice field. Gas samples were collected from the field at weekly intervals by static chamber technique and analyzed in a gas chromatograph. During the crop-growing season, the application of NPK resulted in the highest cumulative N 2 O emission (2.49 kg N 2 O-N ha -1 ) followed by NUA (2.34 kg N 2 O-N ha -1 ), NCU (2.20 kg N 2 O-N ha -1 ), and SCU (1.97 kg N 2 O-N ha -1 ). As against the application of conventional fertilizer (NPK), the application of SCU and NCU reduced the total N 2 O emission by 21% and 12%, respectively (p < 0.05), during the rice-growing period. The results indicate a good correlation of N 2 O emissions with soil organic carbon, soil mineral nitrogen, and urease activity (p < 0.05) at different stages of crop growth. Application of SCU significantly increased the rice grain productivity by 12%, 10%, and 3% over NPK (control), NCU, and NUA respectively without affecting the soil quality and nutrient status. The use of SCU improved the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and was the effective substitute for conventional fertilizer in terms of reducing N 2 O emissions from tropical rice paddy.

This work dealt with the determination of the suitability of sorption of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) on biochars prepared from neem, sugarcane and bamboo feedstocks. Six different VOCs namely benzene, toluene, methyl chloride, xylene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride were used in a laboratory-scale set-up on non-activated biochars prepared via slow pyrolysis (350-550 °C). Although all the chars showed considerable sorption but amongst them N3 (neem-based biochar) showed the maximum removal efficiency (65.5 mg g -1 for toluene). Variation in pyrolysis temperature and feedstock type showed significant change in the porosity and specific surface area of the biochar, which is favorable for VOC sorption efficiency. With higher surface area and contact time, the sorption capacity of char enhanced. However, the extent of sorption capacity of biochars differed with changing VOC type. Biochar obtained through the pyrolysis of Pongamia glabra seed cover (PGSC) at 550 °C with a heating rate of 40 °C/min was characterized and its ability to adsorb the dyes Methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RB) from aqueous solutions was investigated. The effect of pH, temperature and initial concentration of the dyes on adsorption behavior were investigated. The equilibrium sorption data were analyzed by using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms. Equilibrium data were well fitted for D-R isotherm in case of MB and Langmuir isotherm in case of RB dyes. The kinetics of dye adsorption on PGSC biochar was well described by applying pseudo-second-order rate equations. The surface of adsorbent before and after the removal of dyes was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The study suggested that PGSC biochar could be used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the removal of synthetic dyes.

The present investigation deals with the utilization of biochar derived from the pyrolysis of microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus as an adsorbent for the removal of cobalt (II) ion (Co) from aqueous solution. A series of experiments were conducted in a batch system to evaluate the performance of the biochar for Co removal. The effect of contact time on adsorption of Co (II) onto surface of the biochar was investigated. The equilibrium sorption data were analyzed by using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Harkins-Jura and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms and were found to be adequate in describing the Co adsorption onto the biochar. Equilibrium data were well fitted for Freundlich, Temkin and D-R isotherms. The kinetic study of Co (II) adsorption on microalgae biochar were described by applying pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order rate equations. This study investigated the yields and the physicochemical properties of biochar from three different feedstocks viz., i) bioenergy byproducts (deoiled cakes of Jatropha carcus and Pongamia glabra), ii) lignocellulose biomass (Jatropha carcus seed cover), and iii) a noxious weed (Parthenium hysterophorus), obtained through slow pyrolysis at a heating rate of 40°Cmin -1 with a nitrogen flow 100mlmin -1 at a temperature range of 350-650°C. For successful utilization of biochar for C-sequestration, its ability to resist abiotic or biotic degradation was deduced from recalcitrance index R 50 by using TG analysis. It was observed that the biochar produced at higher temperature had higher water holding capacity (WHC) and pH, suggesting its suitability as an amendment in soil with low water retention capacity; thus biochar may be designed to selectively improve soil chemical and physical properties by altering feedstocks and pyrolysis conditions. In the present study, arecanut husk, an agro-processing waste of areca plam industry highly prevalent in the north-eastern region of India, was investigated for its suitability as a prospective bioenergy feedstock for thermo-chemical conversion. Pretreatment of areca husk using torrefaction was performed in a fixed bed reactor with varying reaction temperature (200, 225, 250 and 275°C). The torrefied areca husk was subsequently pyrolyzed from temperature range of 300-600°C with heating rate of 40°C/min to obtain biooil and biochar. The torrefied areca husk, pyrolysis products were characterized by using different techniques. The energy and mass yield of torrefied biomass were found to be decreased with an increase in the torrefaction temperature. Further, biochar were found to be effective in removal of As (V) from aqueous solutions but efficiency of removal was better in case of torrefied biochar. Agricultural soils are the major source of global nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission, and more than two thirds of N 2 O emission originate from soil. Recent studies have identified that green plants contribute to transport of N 2 O to the atmosphere. We investigated the effects of foliar application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) and growth stimulating chemicals on N 2 O emission and wheat grain yield for 2 years. The PGRs' abscisic acid (ABA) and cytozyme (20 mg L -1 ), kinetin (10 and 20 mg L -1 ) and wet tea extract (1:20 w/w) along with distilled water as control were sprayed on wheat canopy at the tillering and panicle initiation stages. Our results showed that cytozyme and tea extract enhanced the plant dry biomass over control. Kinetin (10 and 20 mg L -1 ) and cytozyme increased the plant photosynthetic rate and photosynthate partitioning towards the developing grain. ABA (20 mg L -1 ) and kinetin (10 and 20 mg L -1 ) reduced the N 2 O emission over control primarily through regulation of leaf growth, stomatal density and xylem vessel size. Leaf area, stomatal density and xylem vessel size were found to be associated with N 2 O transport and emission. We concluded that use of ABA and kinetin can reduce N 2 O emissions without any impact on wheat grain yield.

Lipid-rich biomass, generally opted for biodiesel production, produces a substantial amount of by-product (de-oiled cake and seed cover) during the process. Complete utilization of Cascabela thevetia seeds for biofuel production through both chemical and thermochemical conversion route is investigated in the present study. Various properties of biodiesel produced was characterized and compared with those obtained from similar oil seeds. The by-products of the chemical process were used as a feedstock for pyrolysis at different temperatures in a fixed bed reactor. Maximum bio-oil yields of 29.11% and 26.18% were observed at 500°C. The bio-oil obtained at optimum yield was characterized by CHN analyzer, NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The biochar produced was further characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD and FTIR along with elemental analysis to explore its utilization for various purposes. In the present study, pyrolysis of Mesua ferrea seed cover (MFSC) and Pongamia glabra seed cover (PGSC) was performed to investigate the characteristics of bio-oil and its sub fractions. In a fixed bed reactor, the effect of temperature (range of 350-650 °C) on product yield and quality of solid product were monitored. The maximum bio-oil yield of 28.5 wt.% and 29.6 wt.% for PGSC and MFSC respectively was obtained at 550 °C at heating rate of 40 °C/min. The chemical composition of bio-oil and its sub fractions were investigated using FTIR and (1)H NMR. GC-MS was performed for both PGSC and MFSC bio-oils and their corresponding n-hexane fractions. Biosurfactant can make hydrocarbon complexes more mobile with the potential use in oil recovery, pumping of crude oil and in bioremediation of crude oil contaminant. In the investigation, bacterial isolates capable of utilizing poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons like phenanthrene, pyrene and fluorene were used. A gradual decrease of the supplemented hydrocarbons in the culture medium was observed with corresponding increase in bacterial biomass and protein. The medium having the combined application of fluorine and phenanthrene caused better biosurfactant production (0.45 g l(-1)) and (0.38 g l(-1)) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains MTCC7815 and MTCC7814. The biosurfactant from MTCC7815 (41.0 microg ml(-1)) and MTCC7812 (26 microg ml(-1)) exhibited higher solubilization of pyrene; whereas, MTCC8165 caused higher solubilization of phenanthrene; and that of MTCC7812 (24.45 microg ml(-1)) and MTCC8163 (24.49 microg ml(-1)) caused more solubilzation of fluorene. Higher solubilization of pyrene and fluorene by the biosurfactant of MTCC7815 and MTCC7812, respectively enhanced their metabolism causing sustained growth. Biosurfactants were found to be lipopeptide and protein-starch-lipid complex in nature and they could reduce the surface tension of pure water (72 m Nm(-1)) to 35 m Nm(-1). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was also lower than the chemical surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). They differed in quantity and structure. The predominant rhamnolipids present in biosurfactants were Rha-C(8)-C(10) and Rha-C(10)-C(8).

Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is potentially useful to recover incremental oil from a reservoir being beyond primary and secondary recovery operations. Effort has been made to isolate and characterize natural biosurfactant produced by bacterial isolates collected from various oil fields of ONGC in Assam. Production of biosurfactant has been considered to be an effective major index for the purpose of enhanced oil recovery. On the basis of the index, four promising bacterial isolates: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC7815), P. aeruginosa (MTCC7814), P. aeruginosa (MTCC7812) and P. aeruginosa (MTCC8165) were selected for subsequent testing. Biosurfactant produced by the promising bacterial isolates have been found to be effective in the recovery of crude oil from saturated column under laboratory conditions. Two bacterial strains: P. aeruginosa (MTCC7815) and P. aeruginosa (MTCC7812) have been found to be the highest producer of biosurfactant. Tensiometer studies revealed that biosurfactants produced by these bacterial strains could reduce the surface tension (sigma) of the growth medium from 68 to 30 mN m(-1) after 96 h of growth. The bacterial biosurfactants were found to be functionally stable at varying pH (2.5-11) conditions and temperature of 100 degrees C. The treatment of biosurfactant containing, cell free culture broth in crude oil saturated sand pack column could release about 15% more crude oil at 90 degrees C than at room temperature and 10% more than at 70 degrees C under laboratory condition.
