- Abstract
136Xe is used as the target medium for many experiments searching for 0¿ßß. Despite underground operation, cosmic muons that reach the laboratory can produce spallation neutrons causing activation of detector materials. A potential background that is difficult to veto using muon tagging comes in the form of 137Xe created by the capture of neutrons on 136Xe. This isotope decays via beta decay with a half-life of 3.8 min and a Q ß of ~4.16 MeV. This work proposes and explores the concept of adding a small percentage of 3He to xenon as a means to capture thermal neutrons and reduce the number of activations in the detector volume. When using this technique we find the contamination from 137Xe activation can be reduced to negligible levels in tonne and multi-tonne scale high pressure gas xenon neutrinoless double beta decay experiments running at any depth in an underground laboratory.

The performance of a gas proportional scintillation counter filled with either pure Xe or Ar-Xe mixtures is described for the 0.1-10 keV X-ray energy range. It is shown that the spectra tail distortion exhibited by Xe filled gaseous detectors for soft X-rays below 2 keV is reduced if Ar-Xe mixtures are used. The peak-to-valley ratio increases by a factor of about 2 or 3 as the Xe concentration is reduced from 100% to 5%. Moreover, the energy resolutions for such mixtures are similar to the ones for pure Xe. - Abstract
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an excellent diffuse reflector widely used in light collection systems for particle physics experiments. However, the reflectance of PTFE is a function of its thickness. In this work, we investigate this dependence in air for light of wavelengths 260 nm and 450 nm using two complementary methods. We find that PTFE reflectance for thicknesses from 5 mm to 10 mm ranges from 92.5% to 94.5% at 450 nm, and from 90.0% to 92.0% at 260 nm. We also see that the reflectance of PTFE of a given thickness can vary by as much as 2.7% within the same piece of material. Finally, we show that placing a specular reflector behind the PTFE can recover the loss of reflectance in the visible without introducing a specular component in the reflectance.

[EN] High pressure xenon Time Projection Chambers (TPC) based on secondary scintillation (electroluminescence) signal amplification are being proposed for rare event detection such as directional dark matter, double electron capture and double beta decay detection. The discrimination of the rare event through the topological signature of primary ionisation trails is a major asset for this type of TPC when compared to single liquid or double-phase TPCs, limited mainly by the high electron diffusion in pure xenon. Helium admixtures with xenon can be an attractive solution to reduce the electron diffu- sion significantly, improving the discrimination efficiency of these optical TPCs. We have measured the electroluminescence (EL) yield of Xe-He mixtures, in the range of 0 to 30% He and demonstrated the small impact on the EL yield of the addition of helium to pure xenon. For a typical reduced electric field of 2.5 kV/cm/bar in the EL region, the EL yield is lowered by similar to 2%, 3%, 6% and 10% for 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% of helium concentration, respectively. This decrease is less than what has been obtained from the most recent simulation framework in the literature. The impact of the addition of helium on EL statistical fluctuations is negligible, within the experimental uncertainties. The performance of a xenon-filled Gas Proportional-Scintillation Counter is reported, where the VUV Xe scintillation is detected by KI or KBr photocathodes on a microstrip plate. The detector energy resolution R and gain G for 5.9 keV X-rays are presented and compared with previous results obtained with CsI photocathodes. R and G are studied as a function of the halide film thickness and scintillation region length. The best energy resolutions reached values of 12% and 15% for KI and KBr photocathodes, respectively. The use of appropriate mixtures of noble gases in proportional counters can take advantage of the Penning effect, a process of energy transfer between the two species which produces extra electrons. The Penning effect can occur in Xe-Ne mixtures and recent Monte Carlo simulation measurements have shown that a small percentage of Xe (below ~l%Xe) brings to a minimum the fluctuations in the formation of the primary electron cloud and decreases the [omega]-value to a magnitude near that for pure Xe. In addition, the excitation and ionization thresholds and the fluctuations in charge multiplication become lower and the ionization efficiency becomes higher than in pure Xe, indicating that improved energy resolution can be achieved at low applied voltages for a Xe-Ne filled proportional counter. In this work, we present an experimental study of the performance of a cylindrical proportional counter filled with several Xe-Ne mixtures at atmospheric pressure, for 5.9 keV x-rays. Results are presented for the energy resolution and gas multiplication factor and a discussion of the experimental results is made. The energy spectra of X-rays with energies below 2 kev measured with standard Xe filled gas proportional-scintillation counters at atmospheric pressure exhibit a distorted tail toward the low energy region, due to the loss of electrons to the detector entrance window. In this framework, a Monte Carlo simulation study taking into account these losses has previously investigated the use of Xe--Ne mixtures as gas proportional scintillation counters (GPSC) fillings. It was shown that the addition of Ne to Xe reduces spectra distortion and improves the overall detector performance. In the present work, we present an experimental study of the performance of a GPSC for different Xe--Ne mixtures and X-ray energies in the 200 to 2000 eV energy range and compare the results with the previously obtained Monte Carlo data. The energy spectra of X-rays with energies below 2 keV measured at atmospheric pressure with standard Xe gas detectors, such as gas proportional-scintillation counters, exhibit distortions that are related to losses of electrons and fluorescence photons to the radiation window. In this paper, a Monte Carlo simulation method that takes into account these losses investigates the use of Xe-Ne mixtures as detection media in this energy range. For a total pressure of 1 atm, energy spectra were calculated for nine mixtures with Xe concentrations varying from 10% to 100%. The results have shown that the addition of Ne to Xe significantly reduces distortion and improves the energy resolution of the full energy peaks. Excellent energy resolution is one of the primary advantages of electroluminescent high-pressure xenon TPCs. These detectors are promising tools in searching for rare physics events, such as neutrinoless double-beta decay (ßß0¿), which require precise energy measurements. Using the NEXT-White detector, developed by the NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) collaboration, we show for the first time that an energy resolution of 1% FWHM can be achieved at 2.6 MeV, establishing the present technology as the one with the best energy resolution of all xenon detectors for ßß0¿ searches. The electroluminescence yield for [Lambda]>165 nm in neon-xenon mixtures at a total pressure of about 800 torr, is studied as a function of the reduced electric field in a uniform-field gas proportional scintillation counter. Scintillation and ionization thresholds were experimentally observed to decrease monotonically as a function of xenon concentration, from approximately 1 and 6 V[cm.sup.-1] [torr.sup.-1] for 100% xenon, to 0.5 and 3.8 V[cm.sup.-1] [torr.sup.-1] for 20% xenon, to 0.4 and 2.8 V[cm.sup.-1] [torr.sup.-1] for 10% xenon and to 0.3 and 2.2 V[cm.sup.-1] [torr.sup.-1] for 5% xenon. Detector energy resolutions for the aluminum [K.sub.[Alpha]] line at 1.487 keV were determined to be 15% for 20% xenon, 19% for 10% xenon and 22% for 5% xenon mixtures.

- Abstract
[EN] A new method to tag the barium daughter in the double-beta decay of Xe-136 is reported. Using the technique of single molecule fluorescent imaging (SMFI), individual barium dication (Ba++) resolution at a transparent scanning surface is demonstrated. A single-step photobleach confirms the single ion interpretation. Individual ions are localized with superresolution (similar to 2 nm), and detected with a statistical significance of 12.9 sigma over backgrounds. This lays the foundation for a new and potentially background-free neutrinoless double-beta decay technology, based on SMFI coupled to high pressure xenon gas time projection chambers.

- Abstract
[EN] Xe-CO2 mixtures are important alternatives to pure xenon in Time Projection Chambers (TPC) based on secondary scintillation (electroluminescence) signal amplification with applications in the important field of rare event detection such as directional dark matter, double electron capture and double beta decay detection. The addition of CO2 to pure xenon at the level of 0.05-0.1% can reduce significantly the scale of electron diffusion from 10 mm/root m to 2.5 mm/root m, with high impact on the discrimination of the events through pattern recognition of the topology of primary ionization trails. We have measured the electroluminescence (EL) yield of Xe-CO2 mixtures, with sub-percent CO2 concentrations. We demonstrate that the EL production is still high in these mixtures, 70% and 35% relative to that produced in pure xenon, for CO2 concentrations around 0.05% and 0.1%, respectively. The contribution of the statistical fluctuations in EL production to the energy resolution increases with increasing CO2 concentration, being smaller than the contribution of the Fano factor for concentrations below 0.1% CO2.
