Abstract

The dataset presented here consists of 273 conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) stations, as well as 2034 sampled data points in the water column, where dissolved inorganic nutrients have been measured, that were collected during 12 summer oceanographic cruises (BANSIC series) in the Sicily Channel (central Mediterranean Sea) between 2010 and 2021. The quality of the CTD dataset is ensured by regular sensor calibrations and an accurate control process adopted during the acquisition, processing, and post-processing phases. The quality of the biogeochemical dataset is ensured by the adoption of best-practice analytical and sampling methods. This data collection fills a gap of information in the Sicily Channel, i.e., a key area where complex water mass exchange processes involve the transfer of physical and biogeochemical properties between the eastern and western Mediterranean. The available dataset will be useful to evaluate the long-term variability on a wide spatial scale, supporting studies on the evolution of the Mediterranean circulation and its peculiar biogeochemistry, as well as on the physical and biogeochemical modeling of this area. 12. Recent changes in water mass properties in the Western Mediterranean

Abstract

The circulation in the Western Mediterranean Sea is an open thermohaline cell with three major water masses: the Atlantic Water (AW) entering at the surface the Strait of Gibraltar, the intermediate water (IW) of eastern Mediterranean origin entering from the Sicily Channel and the locally produced Western Mediterranean Deep Water (WMDW). All these water masses are nowadays undergoing significant changes in their properties. The Western Mediterranean Transition (WMT) generated warmer, saltier and denser deep water that eventually occupied large part of the deep layer, overflowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea and outside the Strait of Gibraltar. The IW entering from the Sicily Channel is routinely monitored and showed positive trends both in temperature and salinity as well. This progressive signal of warming and salinification has been detected also downstream in the North-Western Mediterranean. The lack of significant open ocean convection in the Gulf of Lion after 2013 prevented this signal to be substantially transferred to deep waters, with only limited diffusive mixing along the way to Gibraltar. Recent oceanographic campaigns in the Western Mediterranean within the umbrella of the Med-SHIP programme allow us (i) to evaluate the major differences in water mass properties in selected repeated CTD stations over time, (ii) to understand the final fate of the water masses generated during the WMT climatic event, (iii) to characterize at basin sub-level the IW properties during this period of increased θ – S values and reduced convection, possibly implying very high salinity Mediterranean Overflow Water to appear soon outside Gibraltar., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

This work presents the results of long-term deep-water observations carried out in the southwestern Adriatic margin. Hydrodynamics and thermohaline measurements were carried out in the last 100 m of the water column using two long-term moorings placed at two different locations along the western sector of the Adriatic continental margin (open slope vs. submarine canyon). The observations, carried out over a period of almost 10 years, made it possible to define the intra- and interannual deep-water dynamics, which are mainly influenced by the passage of cold, dense water. The hydrodynamic field is influenced by seasonal behavior and varies from year to year, with no clear temporal trend or periodicity. Thermohaline properties follow hydrodynamics but also show a climatological trend toward higher temperatures and salinity. The combination and variability of preconditioning factors explains the interannual variability in dense water passage at the mooring sites triggering the formation of dense water in the northern Adriatic. The impulsive nature of the dense water flow, which is difficult to capture with sporadic oceanographic surveys, and its linkage with the large-scale atmospheric circulation make continuous monitoring essential to answer open questions about cascading processes and deep-water dynamics under a global change scenario. 18. Vertical distribution and transport of textile microfibers (MFs) in the Mediterranean water column

Abstract

Microfibers (MFs) are ubiquitous in natural environments and are considered as an anthropogenic litter that has become a global concern. Approximately 2 million tons of MFs are released into the ocean every year and once in the marine environment, it can be hypothesized that their accumulation and transport are largely controlled by oceanographic processes. We collected water column samples for MFs separation and polymeric characterization at 38 stations located in the Central-Western Mediterranean Sea. The aim of our study was to investigate MFs distribution in different water masses and transport through different Mediterranean basins. MFs were detected in all samples with a median concentration of 3.8MFs/L. Polymeric analysis highlighted cellulosic-based fibers as the dominant polymer (85%) over synthetic fibers (5%) and processed cellulose (8%), while animal fibers were detected occasionally. MF concentration was locally characterized by vertical variations according to water masses, and by changes in size, with surface and deep fibers being longer and larger than mid-water fibers. Mediterranean surface waters showed homogeneous MF content (range 3.0-4.9MFs/L), while intermediate and deep waters were characterized by opposite trends. Intermediate-waters showed decreasing MFs concentration moving from the Eastern to the Western Mediterranean basin (9.6-1.6MFs/L) while MF content increased in deep waters at the same stations (3.7-9.1MFs/L). Along the Sardinia Channel, we estimated a negative MF flux of 6 Trillion MF/day entering the Tyrrhenian Sea at intermediate depths, and a positive flux of 12 Trillion MF/day in the deep-water mass. We also estimate a 10-fold flux of synthetic fibers leaving the Tyrrhenian Sea, compared with the daily inflow. Our findings suggest that: i)there is a predominant MFs input on surface waters by atmospheric deposition; ii)MFs vertical distribution is size-dependent; iii)MFs transport between Mediterranean basins is mediated by Levantine waters; iv)a potential export of MFs to deep waters occurs in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Abstract

A 2-year dataset of a stand-alone mooring, deployed in November 2020 down the Levante Canyon in the eastern Ligurian Sea, is presented. The Levante Canyon Mooring (LCM) is a deep submarine multidisciplinary observatory positioned at 608 m depth in a key ecosystem area. The Levante Canyon hosts a valuable and vulnerable ecosystem of deep-living cold-water corals (CWCs), studied and monitored since 2013 through integrated mapping of the seabed and water column. The 2-year dataset, acquired on the mooring and presented here (data from November 2020 to October 2022), includes measurements conducted with both current meters and conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) probes and provides information about the hydrodynamics and thermohaline properties across almost the entire water column. The observatory is still ongoing, and the dataset is regularly updated. All the described data are publicly available from 10.17882/92236 (Borghini et al., 2022). Abstract

International audience; Recent observations from profiles of temperature and salinity in the Algerian Sea showed that salt finger mixing can significantly warm and salinify the deep waters within a period of 2 years, thereby contributing to the erosion of deep water properties formed during winter convection episodes. In this study, heat, salt, and buoyancy fluxes associated with thermohaline staircases are estimated using microstructure observations from four locations of the Western Mediterranean Sea: The Tyrrhenian Sea, the Algerian Sea, the Sardino-Balearic Sea, and the Ligurian Sea. Those fluxes are compared to the rare estimates found in the Mediterranean Sea. Microstructure data show that the temperature variance dissipation rate is one to three orders of magnitude larger in the strong steps that separate weakly stratified layers than in the layers, while the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate remains usually weak both in steps and layers. In the steps, the turbulent eddy diffusivity of salt is on average twice as large as that of temperature. The buoyancy flux ratio decreases with the density ratio. It is found that staircases induce a downward heat transfer rate of 46 to 103 × 109 W over the whole western basin, and a downward salt transfer rate of 4.5 to 10.3 × 103 kg s–1 between 1000 and 2000 m. This heat convergence is 2–5 times as large as the western Mediterranean geothermal heat flux in this depth range. Over the whole western basin, heat and salt convergences from salt-fingering staircases are 50% to 100% of those generated by mechanical mixing. Finally, it is found that heat and salt convergences from geothermal heating, salt-fingering and mechanical mixing can balance a deep water upwelling of 0.4 × 106 m3 s–1.

Abstract

This work presents an 8-years long dataset of monitoring activities conducted on the western margin of the Southern Adriatic Sea, where two moorings have been placed since 2012 in sites that are representative of different morpho-dynamic conditions of the continental slope (open slope vs. submarine canyon). The dataset includes measurements conducted with both current meters and CTD probes, and provides information about the hydrodynamics and thermohaline properties of the last 100 m of the water column. The hydrodynamics in both sites is dominated by weak currents (<0.1 ms-1), which undergo yearly to episodic pulsation able to exceed intensity greater than 0.5 ms-1 which are linked to the passage of dense waters. The 8-years records presented here, represents a starting point for the continuous observation activity set up on occasion of the "Operation Dense Water" in 2012, focused on the Southern Adriatic deep-water dynamic. Abstract

The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy ε and the associated diapycnal turbulent mixing is inferred from a set of microstructure observations collected over several cruises from year 2012 to 2014. The geographical distribution of ε highlights several regions of enhanced levels of turbulence ranging from 10−9 to 10−6 W kg−1: the Sicily Channel, the Corsica Channel, and the Ligurian Sea. Elsewhere, ε was small, often below 10−10 W kg−1. Below 1300 m, geothermal heating provides three-fold more buoyancy than small-scale turbulence. Geothermal heating and turbulent diffusion provide enough buoyancy to balance 15% to 50% of a mean yearly deep water formation rate of 0.9 to 0.3 sverdrup (106 m3/s), respectively. The remaining part has to eventually overflow through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Abstract

An analysis is made of the historical datasets covering almost 40 years (1976 - 2014) in the Ligurian Sea, in the North-Western Mediterranean. Two transects are studied: one at the boundary with the Tyrrhenian sea, in the Corsica Channel, the other between Nice on the French coast and Calvì on Corsica. The variability in the circulation patterns and changes in the hydrological properties of the water masses on seasonal and interannual time scales are investigated. For every cruise we chose the closest transect to the chosen ideal sections.
