The need to define earthquake prevention and intervention strategies, in order to limit dramatic consequences for the society, has acquired a high priority in countries where, like in Italy, a large number of historic masonry buildings (listed or not) are located in areas with medium to high seismic hazard. From the point of view of the level of safety to be reached through interventions, the concept of improvement, as opposed to that of full strengthening, is nowadays widely accepted in the case of monumental heritage; what is still lacking, in many cases, is a procedure for the vulnerability analysis, as a synthetic evaluation tool for the definition of intervention priorities. In a modern perspective, where territorial planning is conceived as a safety project for the territory, the seismic vulnerability analysis should not be confined to specific technical documents, but should rather be considered at a general level; in this way only, indeed, the issue of seismic risk could acquire widespread knowledge and awareness in the population, also pushing urban planning in the direction of general programs for the increase of seismic safety. In the above perspective, revised criteria have to be developed for a global vulnerability assessment, to be introduced at a general level in territorial planning. Considering that seismic vulnerability analyses are strictly dependent on specific building typologies, attention has been focused, in the present study, on to the case of structural aggregates in historical centers, thus following the needs of the Italian Civil Protection Agency in relation to seismic prevention activities in historical towns. The research, which is still in progress, takes advantage from the application to a few study cases, suitable for the experimental testing of procedures.

International audience; Aims In degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR), lack of mortality scores predicting death favours misperception of individual patients' risk and inappropriate decision-making. Methods and results The Mitral Regurgitation International Database (MIDA) registries include 3666 patients (age 66 +/- 14 years; 70% males; follow-up 7.8 +/- 5.0 years) with pure, isolated, DMR consecutively diagnosed by echocardiography at tertiary (European/North/South-American) centres. The MIDA Score was derived from the MIDA-Flail-Registry (2472 patients with DMR and flail leaflet-Derivation Cohort) by weighting all guideline-provided prognostic markers, and externally validated in the MIDA-BNP-Registry (1194 patients with DMR and flail leaflet/prolapse-Validation Cohort). The MIDA Score ranged from 0 to 12 depending on accumulating risk factors. In predicting total mortality post-diagnosis, the MIDA Score showed excellent concordance both in Derivation Cohort (c = 0.78) and Validation Cohort (c = 0.81). In the whole MIDA population (n = 3666 patients), 1-year mortality with Scores 0, 7-8, and 11-12 was 0.4, 17, and 48% under medical management and 1, 7, and 14% after surgery, respectively (P < 0.001). Five-year survival with Scores 0, 7-8, and 11-12 was 98 +/- 1, 57 +/- 4, and 21 +/- 10% under medical management and 99 +/- 1, 82 +/- 2, and 57 +/- 9% after surgery (P < 0.001). Historical architecture often features very detailed elements that are frequently characterized by complex ornamentation, such as capitals, vaulted arches, portals, mouldings etc. Modelling such highly detailed surfaces with traditional software packages can be a very difficult and time-consuming task. This poster discusses the combined use of two software applications to integrate traditional three-dimensional reconstructions of historical architecture and 3D models generated by semi-automatic photo-modelling. Two famous churches in Ravenna were used for the case studies: San Giovanni Evangelista and Spirito Santo. These churches are two outstanding examples of early Christian architecture in Ravenna; built between the 5th and the 6th centuries, they feature excellent examples of the key elements of religious architecture of late antiquity and the medieval period. The aim of the study was to document the modifications made to these churches through the centuries by means of a three-dimensional reconstruction that was chiefly created with the combined use of two open-source software programs: Blender was used to recreate the main structures such as walls, apses, roofs and windows, and Autodesk 123D Catch® was chosen to generate 3D textured models of the most detailed parts: capitals, portals, decorated columns and the ambo of Spirito Santo. The success of this technique demonstrates that the use of a hybrid workflow can simplify the generation of complex shapes, increase the level of detail, and speed up the whole modelling process.
