2. Asymmetric adaptive LDPC-based information reconciliation for industrial quantum key distribution

Abstract

We develop a new approach for asymmetric LDPC-based information reconciliation in order to adapt to the current channel state and achieve better performance and scalability in practical resource-constrained QKD systems. The new scheme combines the advantages of LDPC codes, a priori error rate estimation, rate-adaptive and blind information reconciliation techniques. We compare the performance of several asymmetric and symmetric error correction schemes using real industrial QKD setup. The proposed asymmetric algorithm achieves significantly higher throughput, providing a secret key rate very close to the symmetric one in a wide range of error rates. Thus, our approach turns out to be particularly efficient for applications with high key rates, limited classical channel capacity and asymmetric computational resource allocation., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, published in Entropy

3. Formation of the Thebe Extension in the Ring System of Jupiter

Abstract

Jupiter's tenuous dust ring system is embedded in the planet's inner magnetosphere, and - among other structures - contains a very tenuous protrusion called the Thebe extension. In an attempt to explain the existence of this swath of particles beyond Thebe's orbit, Hamilton and Kr\"uger (2008) proposed that the dust particle motion is driven by a shadow resonance caused by variable dust charging on the day and night side of Jupiter. However, the model by Divine (1983) together with recent observations by the Juno spacecraft indicates a warm and rather dense inner magnetosphere of Jupiter which implies that the mechanism of the shadow resonance does not work. Instead we argue that dust grains ejected from Thebe due to micrometeoroid bombardment become the source of dust in the Thebe extension. We show that large (grain radii of a few micrometers up to multi-micrometers) charged dust grains having significant initial velocities oscillate in the Thebe extension. Smaller charged grains (with sub-micrometer radii) ejected from Thebe do not spend much time in the Thebe extension and migrate into the Thebe ring. At the same time, if such grains are ejected from larger dust grains in the Thebe extension due to fragmentation, they continue to oscillate within the Thebe extension for years. We argue that fragmentation of large dust grains in the Thebe extension could be the main source of sub-micrometer grains detected in the Thebe extension., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Geophysical Research Space Physics

Abstract

Energetic electrons from the inner radiation belt provide significant electric charging of the surfaces of Jupiter's moons Thebe and Amalthea whose orbits are located within this radiation belt. We estimate theoretically the electric fields in the vicinity of the polar regions of Thebe and Amalthea and argue that these fields are sufficient for lofting of micron and submicron-sized dust grains from the surfaces of the moons. Thus, the lofting of charged dust grains in the electric fields can be considered as an additional source supplying dust to the gossamer rings in addition to dust ejection by micrometeoroid impacts onto the moons' surfaces. 21. Drilling Rig Operation Mode Recognition by an Artificial Neuronet

Abstract

The article proposes a way to develop a drilling rig operation mode classifier specialized to recognize pre-emergency situations appearable in commercial oil-and-gas well drilling. The classifier is based on the theory of image recognition and artificial neuronet taught on real geological and technological information obtained while drilling. To teach the neuronet, a modified backpropagation algorithm that can teach to reach the global extremum of a target function has been proposed. The target function was a relative recognition error to minimize in the teaching. Two approaches to form the drilling rig pre-emergency situation classifier based on a taught neuronet have been considered. The first one involves forming an output classifier of N different signals, each of which corresponds to a single recognizable situation and, and can be formed on the basis of the analysis of M indications, that is using a uniform indication vocabulary for all recognized situations. The second way implements a universal classifier comprising N specialized ones, each of which can recognize a single pre-emergency situation and having a single output.

Abstract

One of the major strategic tasks in Russia’s northwest of the past cen turies was the defense of the country’s territories from enemy incursions coming from the West. In order to solve this task, a robust shield in the form of a system of fortresses was created between the 13th and 15th centuries. The system included such fortresses as Koporye, Yam, Korela, Oreshek, and others. In our age, these monuments have become an essential part of Russia’s historic and cultural heritage and an important element of the tourism cluster “The Si lver Ring of Russia.” The Centre of Design and Multimedia at St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, jointly with the Department of History and the Faculty of Arts at St. Petersburg State University, working under a three-year grant from the Russian Foundation for Humanities Research (#12-01-12041), is implementing a multimedia information system “Ancient Fortresses of Russia’s Northwest” . Historically accurate virtual reconstruction of several fortresses as they existed during certain historic periods, done in such a way as to allow the future creation of virtual tours of these sites, has become the focus of this project’s research. In the present paper, we describe the main phases and results of virtual reconstruction of the best-preserved fortress, Koporye.

The article presents a development of innovative research in the field of high education and museum studies in context of Digital Humanities (DH) concept.
