In this work, we give a detailed description and discussion of the dynamic gravitational equations of the model with Lagrangian of the type ∫ det R μ ν d 4 x as proposed by Eddington time ago but with R μ ν being a non-Riemannian generalization of the Ricci tensor with the end to find the geometrical origin of the Eddington and Weyl conjectures concerning Lagrangian densities (generalized volume) and natural gauge. The Ricci tensor in our case is particularly based on an affine geometry with a generalized compatibility condition previously proposed in [B. McInnes, On the geometrical interpretation of 'non-symmetric' space-time field structures, Class. Quantum Grav. 1 (1984) 105–113; D. J. Cirilo-Lombardo, Non-Riemannian geometry, Born–Infeld models and trace-free gravitational equations, J. High Energy Astrophys. 16 (2017) 1–14]. Specifically, we show that: (i) the geometric action can be taken to a BI-type form considering a totally antisymmetric torsion field, (ii) Weyl's proposal considering a universal gauge linked to a cosmological constant λ appears in the model naturally due to the proposed affine geometry, (iii) the Eddington conjecture that establishes a relationship between metric and curvature or fundamental tensor with constant of proportionality λ (natural gauge) is geometrically verified in the model with generalized affine geometry. EQUILIBRIUM , *POTENTIAL energy - Abstract
In this paper, we consider the electrostatic Born-Infeld model (BI) { − div (∇ ϕ 1 − | ∇ ϕ | 2 ) = ρ in R N , lim | x | → ∞ ϕ (x) = 0 where ρ is a charge distribution on the boundary of a bounded domain Ω ⊂ R N , with N ⩾ 3. We are interested in its equilibrium measures , i.e. charge distributions which minimize the electrostatic energy of the corresponding potential among all possible distributions with fixed total charge. We prove existence of equilibrium measures and we show that the corresponding equilibrium potential is unique and constant in Ω ‾. Furthermore, for smooth domains, we obtain the uniqueness of the equilibrium measure, we give its precise expression, and we verify that the equilibrium potential solves (BI). Finally we characterize balls in R N as the unique sets among all bounded C 2 , α -domains Ω for which the equilibrium distribution is a constant multiple of the surface measure on ∂Ω. The same results are obtained also for Taylor approximations of the electrostatic energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider a family of non-linear theories of electromagnetism that interpolate between Born-Infeld at small distances and ModMax at large distances. These models are duality invariant and feature a $K-$mouflage screening in the Born-Infeld regime. We focus on computing the static perturbations around a point-like screened charge in terms of two decoupled scalar potentials describing the polar and the axial sectors respectively. Duality invariance imposes that the propagation speed of the odd perturbations goes to zero as fast as the effective screened charge of the object, potentially leading to strong coupling and an obstruction to the viability of the EFT below the screened radius. We then consider the linear response to external fields and compute the electric polarisability and the magnetic susceptibility. Imposing regularity of the perturbations at the position of the particle, we find that the polarisability for the odd multipoles vanishes whilst for the magnetisation Born-Infeld emerges as the only theory with vanishing susceptibility for even multipoles. The perturbation equations factorise in terms of ladder operators connecting different multipoles. There are two such ladder structures for the even sector: one that acts as an automorphism between the first four multipoles and another one that connects multipoles separated by four units. When requiring a similar ladder structure for the odd sector, Born-Infeld arises again as the unique theory. We use this ladder structure to relate the vanishing of the polarisability and the susceptibility to the values of conserved charges. Finally the perturbation equations correspond to a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system such that the polar sector can be described in terms of Schr\"odinger's equations with four generalised hyperbolic P\"osch-Teller potentials whose eigenfunctions are in correspondence with the multipoles., Comment: 62 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Advances in scattering amplitudes have exposed previously-hidden color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory and the Born-Infeld model. These novel structures both simplify higher-order calculations and pose tantalizing questions related to a unified framework underlying relativistic quantum theories. This introductory mini-review article invites further exploration of these topics. After a brief introduction to color-kinematics duality and the double copy as they emerges at tree and loop-level in gauge and gravity theories, we present two distinct examples: 1) an introduction to the web of double-copy-constructible theories, and 2) a discussion on the application of the double copy to calculation relevant to gravitational-wave physics., 40 pages, please see also the overview article arXiv:2203.13011

The structure of the five-dimensional Tachyon-Chern-Simons action and its relevance to single-baryon states in the context of the V-QCD models for holographic QCD with backreacting flavor are analyzed. The most general form of the Tachyon-Chern-Simons 5-form, compatible with symmetries and flavor anomalies is determined. It is the sum of a non-trivial gauge-invariant 5-dimensional form and a non-invariant closed 5-form that reproduces the flavor anomalies. Single-baryon solutions of the gravity theory, arising from the DBI plus Tachyon-Chern-Simons actions are considered. The baryon is realised as a bulk axial instanton. The baryon ansatz and the field equations are derived and the boundary conditions are determined, which ensure that the solution has finite boundary energy and unit baryon charge. The boundary baryon number, which is computed from the universal (closed) part of the Tachyon-Chern-Simons action, is shown to coincide with the bulk axial instanton number., 42 pages + Appendix, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in JHEP

In this paper, we study a non-canonical extension of a supergravity-motivated model acting as a vivid counterexample to the cosmic no-hair conjecture due to its unusual coupling between scalar and electromagnetic fields. In particular, a canonical scalar field is replaced by the string-inspired Dirac-Born-Infeld one in this extension. As a result, exact anisotropic inflationary solutions for this Dirac-Born-Infeld model are figured out under a constant-roll condition. Furthermore, numerical calculations are performed to verify that these anisotropic constant-roll solutions are indeed attractive during their inflationary phase., 14 pages, 14 figures. Electromagnetic duality of Maxwell theory is a symmetry of equations but not of the action. The usual application of the `complexity=action' conjecture would thus loose this duality. It was recently proposed in arxiv:1901.00014 that the duality can be restored by adding some appropriate boundary term, at the price of introducing the mixed boundary condition in the variation principle. We present universal such a term in both first-order and second-order formalism for a general theory of a minimally-coupled Maxwell field. The first-order formalism has the advantage that the variation principle involves only the Dirichlet boundary condition. Including this term, we compute the on-shell actions in the Wheeler-De Witt patch and find that the duality persists in these actions for a variety of theories, including Einstein-Maxwell, Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton, Einstein-Born-Infeld and Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell theories., Latex, 26 pages, references added

We investigate the existence of double copy structure, or the lack thereof, in higher derivative operators for Nambu-Goldstone bosons. At the leading ${\cal O}(p^2)$, tree amplitudes of Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the adjoint representation can be (trivially) expressed as the double copy of itself and the cubic bi-adjoint scalar theory, through the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye bilinear kernel. At the next-to-leading ${\cal O}(p^4)$ there exist four operators in general, among which we identify one operator whose amplitudes exhibit the flavor-kinematics duality and can be written as the double copy of ${\cal O}(p^2)$ Nambu-Goldstone amplitudes and the Yang-Mills+$\phi^3$ theory, involving both gluons and gauged cubic bi-adjoint scalars. The specific operator turns out to coincide with the scalar ${\cal O}(p^4)$ operator in the so-called extended Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, for which the aforementioned double copy relation holds more generally., Comment: 26 pages + appendices, 4 figures; typos fixed in v3

We generalize the algorithm that establishes the correspondence between metric-affine Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity and General Relativity (GR) to any bosonic matter sector. Along the way, a polished version of the proof of existence of a metric compatible frame associated to any metric-affine Ricci-Based Gravity (RBG) is presented. Particular attention is given to the problem of generating solutions of a RBG from the GR conterpart, providing a general recipe for the EiBI case. This extends previous results obtained for specific matter that included anisotropic fluids, scalar fields and electromagnetic fields., 21 pages, 0 figures, contribution to Selected Papers of the Fifth Amazonian Symposium on Physics, accepted in IJMPD

We show how minimally-coupled matter fields of arbitrary spin, when coupled to Ricci-Based Gravity theories, develop non-trivial effective interactions that can be treated perturbatively only below a characteristic high-energy scale $\Lambda_Q$. Our results generalize to arbitrary matter fields those recently obtained for spin 1/2 fields in \cite{Latorre:2017uve}. We then use this interactions to set bounds on the high-energy scale $\Lambda_Q$ that controls departures of Ricci-Based Gravity theories from General Relativity. Particularly, for Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity we obtain the strong bound $ |\kappa, Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. In this paper we construct new hairy black holes of Lovelock-Born-Infeld-Scalar gravity in diverse dimensions. We study horizon structures of the black holes and find the black holes may possess three horizons, two horizons or one horizon. We give the thermodynamic quantities and check the first laws. We study the thermal phase transition behaviors of the black holes in $T$-$S$ plane, and find for even-dimensional black holes, in some ranges of the parameters Van der Waals-like phase transitions occur, in some ranges of the parameters, reentrant phase transitions (RPTs) appear. For odd-dimensional black holes no such phase transitions are found., 12 pages, 3 figures; v3: final version to appear in PLB

An elegant unified web for amplitudes of various theories was given by Cachazo, He and Yuan in the CHY framework a few years ago. Recently, similar web has also been constructed by Cheung, Shen and Wen, which relies on a set of differential operators. In this note, by acting these differential operators on CHY-integrands systematically, we have established the relation between these two approaches. Thus, amplitudes for all theories which have CHY representations, include gravity theory, Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, Einstein-Maxwell theory, pure Yang-Mills theory, Yang-Mills-scalar theory, Born-Infeld theory, Dirac-Born-Infeld theory and its extension, bi-adjoint scalar theory, $\phi^4$ theory, non-linear sigma model, as well as special Galileon theory, have been included in the unified web rooted from gravity theory., Comment: 20 pages

LAGRANGIAN functions , *SOLITONS , *NONLINEAR theories , *SCALAR field theory - Abstract
Abstract: We perform a general analysis of the dynamic structure of two classes of relativistic lagrangian field theories exhibiting static spherically symmetric non-topological soliton solutions. The analysis is concerned with (multi-) scalar fields and generalized gauge fields of compact semi-simple Lie groups. The lagrangian densities governing the dynamics of the (multi-) scalar fields are assumed to be general functions of the kinetic terms, whereas the gauge-invariant lagrangians are general functions of the field invariants. These functions are constrained by requirements of regularity, positivity of the energy and vanishing of the vacuum energy, defining what we call “admissible” models. In the scalar case we establish the general conditions which determine exhaustively the families of admissible lagrangian models supporting this kind of finite-energy solutions. We analyze some explicit examples of these different families, which are defined by the asymptotic and central behaviour of the fields of the corresponding particle-like solutions. From the variational analysis of the energy functional, we show that the admissibility constraints and the finiteness of the energy of the scalar solitons are necessary and sufficient conditions for their linear static stability against small charge-preserving perturbations. Furthermore, we perform a general spectral analysis of the dynamic evolution of the small perturbations around the statically stable solitons, establishing their dynamic stability. Next, we consider the case of many-components scalar fields, showing that the resolution of the particle-like field problem in this case reduces to that of the one-component case. The study of these scalar models is a necessary step in the analysis of the gauge fields. In this latter case, we add the requirement of parity invariance to the admissibility constraints. We determine the general conditions defining the families of admissible gauge-invariant models exhibiting finite-energy electrostatic spherically symmetric solutions which, unlike the (multi-) scalar case, are not always stable. The variational analysis of the energy functional leads now to supplementary restrictions to be imposed on the lagrangian densities in order to ensure the linear stability of the solitons. We establish a correspondence between any admissible soliton-supporting (multi-) scalar model and a family of admissible generalized gauge models supporting finite-energy electrostatic point-like solutions. Conversely, for each admissible soliton-supporting gauge-invariant model there is an associated unique admissible (multi-) scalar model with soliton solutions. This shows the exhaustive character of the admissibility and stability conditions in determining the class of soliton-supporting generalized gauge models. The usual Born–Infeld electrodynamic theory and its non-abelian extensions are shown to be (very particular) examples of one of these families. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We perform a systematic analysis of the conditions under which generalized gauge field theories of compact semisimple Lie groups exhibit electrostatic spherically symmetric non-topological soliton solutions in three space dimensions. By the term generalized, we mean that the dynamics of the concerned fields is governed by Lagrangian densities which are general functions of the quadratic field invariants, leading to physically consistent models. The analysis defines exhaustively the class of this kind of Lagrangian models supporting those soliton solutions and leads to methods for their explicit determination. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the linear stability of the finite-energy solutions against charge-preserving perturbations are established, going beyond the usual Derrick-like criteria, which only provides necessary conditions. We investigate a Born--Infeld-type model of nonlinear electrodynamics, possessing three parameters, coupled with general relativity. As a particular case Born--Infeld electrodynamics is reproduced. There is no singularity of the electric field at the centre of point-like charged particles and self-energy of charges is finite in this model. The magnetized black hole is studied and solutions are obtained. We demonstrate that for some parameters of the model the black hole is regular. We find the asymptotic of the metric and mass functions at $r\rightarrow\infty$ and $r\rightarrow 0$, and corrections to the Reissner--Nordstr\"{o}m solution. Thermodynamics of black holes is investigated. We calculate the Hawking temperature of black holes and show that black holes are not stable and there are phase transitions in the model under consideration., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, corrected Eq. In this paper, we have investigated phase transitions in arbitrary spacetime dimensions for Born-Infeld AdS black holes. The phase transition points are characterised from the divergence of heat capacity of the black hole. Two well established techniques, namely, the Ehrenfest scheme and the Ruppeiner state space geometry approach are used to identify the order of phase transition the black hole undergoes. It is observed that the results obtained from these two methods agree with each other. Our analysis reveals that the phase transition is of second order. It is also observed from the variation of the heat capacity with entropy that the small unstable black hole phase becomes more and more stable with increase in the spacetime dimensions. We speculate that this dependence of the stability of the black hole on the spacetime dimension can put an upper limit to the dimension of spacetime from the physical condition of the improbability of the formation of a small stable black hole. We have also derived a Smarr relation in D-spacetime dimensions using scaling arguments and first law of black hole thermodynamics which includes the cosmological constant and the Born-Infeld parameters as thermodynamic variables., 19 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

In this paper, we consider the electrostatic Born-Infeld model [Figure presented] where ρ is a charge distribution on the boundary of a bounded domain Ω⊂RN, with N⩾3. We are interested in its equilibrium measures, i.e. charge distributions which minimize the electrostatic energy of the corresponding potential among all possible distributions with fixed total charge. We prove existence of equilibrium measures and we show that the corresponding equilibrium potential is unique and constant in Ω‾. Furthermore, for smooth domains, we obtain the uniqueness of the equilibrium measure, we give its precise expression, and we verify that the equilibrium potential solves (BI). Finally we characterize balls in RN as the unique sets among all bounded C2,α-domains Ω for which the equilibrium distribution is a constant multiple of the surface measure on ∂Ω. The same results are obtained also for Taylor approximations of the electrostatic energy., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

In this work we calculate the angular deflection of light in the strong field limit in two spacetimes which were previously studied within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI), namely, a black hole and a wormhole, both with topological charge. We show that the presence of the parameters characterizing EiBI and the topological charge promote significant changes in the angular deflection of light with respect to that one obtained in Schwarzschild spacetime. Using the expression for angular deflection in the strong field limit, we calculate the position and magnification of the respective relativistic images., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

The regular black hole solution arising as a spherically symmetric vacuum solution of Born-Infeld gravity possesses an asymptotic interior structure which is very well described by a four dimensional generalization of the non-rotating BTZ metric. According to this picture no singularity exists, and instead, infalling observers experience a constant curvature manifold as they travel towards future null infinity. This is characterized by the BTZ event horizon. The exterior structure of the black hole is also studied, and it is shown that it corresponds to the Schwarzschild solution provided the black hole mass is not too small. In this way, the regular black hole state can be seen as a spacetime which connects two constant curvature asymptotic spaces, namely, the flat Minkowski spacetime in the outside region, and the locally AdS constant negative curvature one characterizing the BTZ-like asymptotic interior., Comment: 7 Pages. The $N=1$ supersymmetric Born-Infeld theory coupled to $N=1$ supergravity in four spacetime dimensions is studied in the presence of a cosmological term with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The consistency is achieved by compensating a negative contribution to the cosmological term from the Born-Infeld theory by a positive contribution originating from the gravitino condensate. This leads to an identification of the Born-Infeld scale with the supersymmetry breaking scale. The dynamical formation of the gravitino condensate in supergravity is reconsidered and the induced one-loop effective potential is derived. Slow roll cosmological inflation with the gravitino condensate as the inflaton (near the maximum of the effective potential) is viable against the Planck 2018 data and can lead to the inflationary (Hubble) scale as high as $10^{12}$ GeV. Uplifting the Minkowski vacuum (after inflation) to a de Sitter vacuum (dark energy) is possible by the use of the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos term. Some major physical consequences of our scenario to reheating are briefly discussed also., 15 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX; section 2 revised, main results unchanged; comments added; misprints corrected

It has been shown that the Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) can be violated by a scalar field in a near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. In this paper, we investigate the Strong Cosmic Censorship in a Born-Infeld-de Sitter black hole by a scalar perturbation field with/without a charge. When the Born-Infeld parameter b becomes small, the nonlinear electrodynamics effect starts to play an important role and tends to rescue SCC. Specifically, we find that the SCC violation region decreases in size with decreasing b. Moreover, for a sufficiently small b, SCC can always be restored in a near-extremal Born-Infeld-de Sitter black hole with a fixed charge ratio., 19 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we demonstrate that using differential operators one can construct the complete unified web for expansions of amplitudes for a wide range of theories. We first re-derive the expansion of multi-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes to Kleiss-Kuijf basis of color-ordered Yang-Mills amplitudes, by applying proper differential operators which modify the coefficients in the recursive expansion of single-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes. Next, through differential operators which act on amplitudes only, we obtain expansions of amplitudes of Yang-Mills theory, Yang-Mills-scalar theory, $\phi^4$ theory, non-linear sigma model, bi-adjoint scalar theory, Born-Infeld theory, Dirac-Born-Infeld theory and special Galileon theory. Then, together with other results in literatures, the complete unified web is achieved. This web for expansions is the dual version of the unified web for differential operators. Thus, connections among amplitudes of a variety of theories, which are reflected by Cachazo-He-Yuan integrands and differential operators previously, can also be represented by expansions. We also find that amplitudes of all theories in the web can be expanded to double color-ordered bi-adjoint scalar amplitudes in the universal double copy formula., Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables

We discuss the thermodynamics of a general nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) asymptotically flat black hole enclosed in a finite spherical cavity. A canonical ensemble is considered, which means that the temperature and the charge on the wall of the cavity are fixed. After the free energy is obtained by computing the Euclidean action, it shows that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied at the locally stationary points of the free energy. Focusing on a Born-Infeld (BI) black hole in a cavity, the phase structure and transition in various regions of the parameter space are investigated. In the region where the BI electrodynamics has weak nonlinearities, Hawking-Page-like and van der Waals-like phase transitions occur, and a tricritical point appears. In the region where the BI electrodynamics has strong enough nonlinearities, only Hawking-Page-like phase transitions occur. The phase diagram of the BI black hole in a cavity can have dissimilarity from that of a BI black hole using asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. The dissimilarity may stem from a lack of an appropriate reference state with the same charge and temperature for the BI-AdS black hole., 29 pages, 10 figures

We study static (electrically)-charged solutions of Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory of gravity in general $D$-dimensional spacetime. We consider both linear (Maxwell) as well as nonlinear electrodynamics for the matter fields. In this particular work, the nonlinear theory we specifically consider is the Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The solutions describe higher-dimensional black holes in EiBI gravity. For the linear Maxwell field, we show that the electric field is still singular for $D>4$. This singularity is cured when EiBI is coupled to the BI electrodynamics. We obtain EiBI-BI black hole solutions in the limit of ${\tilde\alpha}\equiv4\kappa b^2/\lambda=1$ and $2$. We also investigate their thermodynamical property. It is found that $\kappa$ imposes a charge screening that makes the corresponding Hawking temperature experiences some sudden jump from charged-type to the Schwarzschild-type at some critical value of $\kappa$. Thermodynamical stability reveals that the EiBI-BI black holes can exist with smaller horizon than the RN., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys. B

We study the de Sitter (dS) swampland conjecture in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation model. We obtain the dS swampland bound for the relativistic regime using Bousso's entropy bound argument and proper distance. It restricts $m_{\rm Pl}\nabla V/V$ by some positive constant depending on warping and the field range. In the specific case of the DBI model driven by the quadratic potential, the model-dependent backreaction argument is interpreted as a natural bound for the slow-roll parameter. This shows that quasi-dS spacetime in the DBI model is a result of tuning., Comment: 6 pages, no figure, version published in Phys. Rev. D

In the context of Born-Infeld gravity theories we report the existence of a regular black hole interior representing a spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the theory. It reduces to the Schwarzschild interior metric in the weak field region. In particular, there is a new length scale which is related to the Born-Infeld parameter. This endows the spacetime with an inner (i.e. well inside the event horizon) asymptotic region which is unattainable for observers. The central curvature singularity is replaced by an infinitely long cosmic string with constant curvature invariants related to the Born-Infeld constant. The presence of this limiting curvature spacetime renders the black hole timelike and null geodesically complete, free from the classical Schwarzschild singularity. The transition between the usual black hole interior and this maximum curvature space is achieved without introducing any kind of matter content nor topological changes., 6 pages, two figures; v2 minor additions and corrections

In the probe limit, we investigate the effects of the Born–Infeld electrodynamics on the holographic paramagnetism–ferromagnetism phase transition in the background of a Schwarzschild–AdS black hole spacetime. We find that the presence of Born–Infeld scale parameter b decreases the critical temperature and makes the magnetic moment harder to form in the case of without external field. Furthermore, the increase of b will result in extending the period of the external magnetic field.

Recently, some authors (Cruz and Rojas, 2013 [1] ) have constructed a Born–Infeld type action which may be written in terms of the Lovelock brane Lagrangians for a given dimension p. We reconsider their model in M-theory and study the process of birth and growth of nonlinear spinor and bosonic gravity during the construction of Mp-branes. Then, by application of this idea to BIonic system, we construct a BIonic superconductor in the background of nonlinear gravity. In this model, first, M0-branes link to each other and build an M5-brane and an anti-M5-brane connected by an M2-brane. M0-branes are zero dimensional objects that only scalars are attached to them. By constructing higher dimensional branes from M0-branes, gauge fields are produced. Also, if M0-branes don't link to each other completely, the symmetry of system is broken and fermions are created. The curvature produced by fermions has the opposite sign the curvature produced by gauge fields. Fermions on M5-branes and M2 plays the role of bridge between them. By passing time, M2 dissolves in M5's and nonlinear bosonic and spinor gravities are produced. By closing M5-branes towards each other, coupling of two identical fermions on two branes to each other causes that the square mass of their system becomes negative and some tachyonic states are created. For removing these tachyons, M5-branes compact, the sign of gravity between branes reverses, anti-gravity is produced which causes that branes and identical fermions get away from each other. This is the reason for the emergence of Pauli exclusion principle in Bionic system. Also, the spinor gravity vanishes and its energy builds a new M2 between M5-branes. We obtain the resistivity in this system and find that its value decreases by closing M5 branes to each other and shrinks to zero at colliding point of branes. This idea has different applications. For example, in cosmology, universes are located on M5-branes and M2-brane has the role of bridge between universes. When M5-branes become close to each other, this bridge dissolves in universes and causes that they expand. Also, when branes get away from each other, universes are contracted by compacting branes. The reason for flatness of universe in this system may be the neutralizing of curvature produced by gauge and scalar fields by the curvature produced by fermions. Using this idea in cuprates, we show that by decreasing temperature of system, branes which electrons live on it approach to each other in extra dimensions and superconductivity creates. Applying this idea in QCD, we calculate the potential between particles and anti-particles which is in good agreement with predicted potential for confined color particles. This means that one BIonic superconductor between quark and antiquark may be the main reason of confinement in QCD. Finally, in biological system, the emergence of superconductor between two neurons of two different brains via extra dimension leads to transmission of information between them and happening telepathy.

We find a method to rewrite the equations of motion of scalar fields, generalized DBI field and quintessence, in the autonomous form for\emph{arbitrary} scalar potentials. With the aid of this method, we explore the cosmic evolution of generalized DBI field and quintessence with the potential of multiple vacua. Then we find that the scalars are always frozen in the false or true vacuum in the end. Compared to the evolution of quintessence, the generalized DBI field has more times of oscillations around the vacuum of the potential. The reason for this point is that, with the increasing of speed $\dot{\phi}$, the friction term of generalized DBI field is greatly decreased. Thus the generalized DBI field acquires more times of oscillations., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted by IJTP. A number of typos corrected

We investigate possible stable configurations of two arbitrary branes at general angles using the dynamics of DBI + WZ action. The analysis naturally reveals two types of solutions which we identify as the “marginal” and “non-marginal” configurations. We characterize possible configurations of a pair of identical or non-identical branes in either of these two classes by specifying their proper intersection rules and allowed intersection angles. We also perform a partial analysis of configurations with multiple angles of a system of asymptotically flat curved branes.

The factorization form of the integrands in the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formalism makes the generalized Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations manifest, thus amplitudes of one theory can be expanded in terms of the amplitudes of another theory. Although this claim seems a rather natural consequence of the above structure, finding the exact expansion coefficients to express an amplitude in terms of another amplitudes is, nonetheless, a nontrivial task despite many efforts devoted to it in the literature. In this paper, we propose a new strategy based in using the differential operators introduced by Cheung, Shen and Wen, and taking advantage of the fact these operators already relate the amplitudes of different theories. Using this new method, expansion coefficients can be found effectively., Comment: 63 pages

We establish a brane-brane duality connecting T-branes to collections of ordinary D-branes. T-branes are intrinsically non-Abelian brane configurations with worldvolume flux, whereas their duals consist of Abelian brane systems that encode the T-brane data in their curvature. We argue that the new Abelian picture provides a reliable description of T-branes when their non-Abelian fields have large expectation values in string units. To confirm this duality, we match the energy density and all the electromagnetic couplings on both sides. A key step in this derivation is a non-trivial factorization of the symmetrized-trace non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action when evaluated on solutions of the $\alpha'$-corrected Hitchin system., Comment: 31 pages, 2 figures

Born-Infeld-AdS black holes in extended phase space may possess phase structures resembling that of van der Waals fluid in four-dimensional spacetime. We study dynamics of its state, which is in the unstable spinodal region initially on phase space, under time-periodic thermal perturbations. By applying the Melnikov method, it is found that there exists a critical amplitude $\gamma_c$ of the perturbations, which depends on the Born-Infeld parameter $b$ and the black hole charge $Q$, such that chaos occurs for $\gamma > \gamma_c$. We found that larger $b$ or $Q$ makes the onset of chaos easier. Space-periodic thermal perturbations on its equilibrium state are also studied and there is always chaos for whatever the perturbation amplitude is., Comment: v1:15 pages, 8 figures; v2: minor modifications

We study the general deformation of $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetry transformations of a vector multiplet that forms a (constant) triplet under the $SU(2)$ R-symmetry corresponding to the magnetic dual of the triplet of the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) parameters. We show that in the presence of both triplets, the induced scalar potential of a vector multiplet with generic prepotential has always a minimum that realises partial breaking of $\mathcal N=2\to \mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry. We then consider the impact of the deformation in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action where one supersymmetry is non-linearly realised, described by a nilpotent constraint on the deformed $\mathcal N=2$ chiral-chiral superfield. We show that the generic magnetic deformation induces an ordinary FI D-term along the linear supersymmetry via the theta-angle. Moreover, we argue that the resulting action differs on-shell from the standard one (DBI+FI) by fermionic contributions., Comment: 28 pages

We study the Einstein-axions AdS black hole from Born–Infeld electrodynamics. Various DC transport coefficients of the dual boundary theory are analytically computed. The DC electric conductivity depends on the temperature, which is a novel property comparing to that in RN-AdS black hole. The effects of Born-Infeld parameter on the transport coefficients are analyzed. Also, we study the AC electric conductivity from Born–Infeld electrodynamics with momentum dissipation. For weak momentum dissipation, the low frequency behavior satisfies the standard Drude formula and the electric transport is coherent for various correction parameter. While for stronger momentum dissipation, the modified Drude formula is applied and we observe a crossover from coherent to incoherent phase. Moreover, the Born–Infeld correction amplifies the incoherent behavior. Finally, we study the non-linear conductivity in probe limit and compare our results with those observed in (i)DBI model.

The O(4)-symmetric regular instanton solutions are studied within the framework of the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI). We find that the behavior of the solution would deviate from that in Einstein gravity when the kinetic energy of the scalar field is sufficiently large. The tunneling probability is calculated numerically in different parameter space. We find that the tunneling probability would increase with the Born-Infeld coupling constant, which is assumed to be positive in this paper. Furthermore, we discover a neck feature in the physical instanton solutions when the kinetic energy of the scalar field is sufficiently large. This feature can be interpreted as a Lorentzian time-like wormhole geometry formed during the bubble materialization., 16 pages, 5 figures

Gluon-gluon to photon-photon scattering gg→γγ offers to the LHC experiments a uniquely powerful probe of dimension-8 operators in the standard model effective field theory that are quadratic in both the electromagnetic and gluonic field-strength tensors, such as would appear in the Born-Infeld extension of the standard model. We use 13-TeV ATLAS data on the production of isolated photon pairs to set lower limits on the scales of dimension-8 operators M≳1 TeV and discuss the prospective sensitivities of possible future hadron colliders.

A supergravity extension of the $(R+R^2)$ gravity with the additional (Born-Infeld) structure of a massive vector multiplet gives rise to the specific $F(R)$ gravity, whose structure is investigated in detail. The massive vector multiplet has inflaton (scalaron), goldstino and a massive vector field as its field components. The model describes Starobinsky inflation and allows us to extrapolate the $F(R)$ function beyond the inflationary scale (up to Planck scale). We observe some differences versus the $(R+R^2)$ gravity, and several breaking patterns of the well known correspondence between the $F(R)$ gravity and the scalar-tensor gravity., 14 pages, LaTex, 2 figures

We show that, in contrast to general relativity, in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI), a violation of the null convergence condition does not necessarily lead to a violation of the null energy condition, by establishing a relationship between them. This serves as a motivation for finding wormhole solutions which can be supported by nonexotic matter in this gravity theory. We then obtain exact solutions of the field equations in EiBI gravity coupled to arbitrary nonlinear electrodynamics and anisotropic fluids. Depending on the signs and values of different parameters, the general solutions can represent both black holes and wormholes. In this work, we analyze the wormhole solutions. These wormholes are supported by nonexotic matter, i.e., matter satisfying all the energy conditions. As special cases of our general solutions, we work out several specific examples by considering Maxwell, power-law, Born-Infeld electrodynamics models and a particular form of an anisotropic fluid., 21 pages, no figure, matches published version

We investigate the dynamics of a number of $f(R)$ theories in the background of the spatially homogeneous as well as isotropic Friedmann-Leima\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model and anisotropic Bianchi type I and V models in Palatini formalism using the dynamical systems approach. Considering theories of the type $f(R)=R+\ensuremath{\gamma}{R}^{m}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\beta}/{R}^{n}$, it is examined whether this model is capable of allowing all four phases of cosmological evolution or not. Additionally, we have performed the analysis for $f(R)=R+\ensuremath{\gamma}{R}^{2}$, as these theories have attracted great attention in recent years. For the theories of the type $f(R)=R\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\beta}/{R}^{n}$, the sequence of the radiation-dominated, matter-dominated, and accelerated expanding epochs has been reproduced. In the case of anisotropic models, the evolution of the anisotropy parameter, i.e., the shear, is also investigated, where it is found that the initial anisotropic Universe evolves to a stable accelerated expanding Universe. Moreover, corresponding to the Bianchi type V model, the evolution of spatial curvature is also investigated.

Using AdS/CFT, we investigate the influence of chemical potential on the holographic Schwinger effect at finite temperature. We study the potential barrier for the pair production and calculate the critical electric field $ E_c$ by Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action. It is found that the chemical potential decreases the potential barrier thus enhancing the Schwinger effect.

Magnetars are neutron stars presenting bursts and outbursts of X- and soft-gamma rays that can be understood with the presence of very large magnetic fields. Thus, nonlinear electrodynamics should be taken into account for a more accurate description of such compact systems. We study that in the context of ideal magnetohydrodynamics and make a realization of our analysis to the case of the well-known Born-Infeld (BI) electromagnetism in order to come up with some of its astrophysical consequences. We focus here on toroidal magnetic fields as motivated by already known magnetars with low dipolar magnetic fields and their expected relevance in highly magnetized stars. We show that BI electrodynamics leads to larger toroidal magnetic fields when compared to Maxwell's electrodynamics. Hence, one should expect higher production of gravitational waves (GWs) and even more energetic giant flares from nonlinear stars. Given current constraints on BI's scale field, giant flare energetics and magnetic fields in magnetars, we also find that the maximum magnitude of magnetar ellipticities should be $10^{-6}-10^{-5}$. Besides, BI electrodynamics may lead to a maximum increase of order $10\%-20\%$ of the GW energy radiated from a magnetar when compared to Maxwell's, while much larger percentages may arise for other physically motivated scenarios. Thus, nonlinear theories of the electromagnetism might also be probed in the near future with the improvement of GW detectors., 8 pages, no figures, accepted for publication in The European Physical Journal C (EPJC)

We derive the nonlinear sigma model as a peculiar dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory. In this framework, pions are reformulated as higher-dimensional gluons arranged in a kinematic configuration that only probes cubic interactions. This procedure yields a purely cubic action for the nonlinear sigma model which exhibits a symmetry enforcing color-kinematics duality. Remarkably, the associated kinematic algebra originates directly from the Poincare algebra in higher dimensions. Applying the same construction to gravity yields a new quartic action for Born-Infeld theory and, applied once more, a cubic action for the special Galileon theory. Since the nonlinear sigma model and special Galileon are subtly encoded in the cubic sectors of Yang-Mills theory and gravity, respectively, their double copy relationship is automatic., Comment: fixed typos and references in v2. We construct an action for NSNS 5-branes which is manifestly covariant under O(d,d). This is done by doubling $d$ of the spacetime coordinates which appear in the worldvolume action. By formulating the DBI part of the action in a manner similar to a "gauged sigma model", only half the doubled coordinates genuinely appear. Our approach allows one to describe the full T-duality orbit of the IIB NS5 brane, the IIA KKM and their exotic relations in one formalism. Furthermore, by using ideas from double field theory, our action can be said to describe various aspects of non-geometric five-branes., Comment: 42 pages and appendix

We investigate, in the probe limit, the negative refraction in the generalized superconductors with the Born-Infeld electrodynamics. We observe that the system has a negative Depine-Lakhtakia index in the superconducting phase at small frequencies and the greater the Born-Infeld corrections the larger the range of frequencies or the range of temperatures for which the negative refraction occurs. Furthermore, we find that the tunable Born-Infeld parameter can be used to improve the propagation of light in the holographic setup. Our analysis indicates that the Born-Infeld electrodynamics plays an important role in determining the optical properties of the boundary theory., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures
