Over the past century, major advances in astronomy and astrophysics have been largely driven by improvements in instrumentation and data collection. With the amassing of high quality data from new telescopes, and especially with the advent of deep and large astronomical surveys, it is becoming clear that future advances will also rely heavily on how those data are analyzed and interpreted. New methodologies derived from advances in statistics, computer science, and machine learning are beginning to be employed in sophisticated investigations that are not only bringing forth new discoveries, but are placing them on a solid footing. Progress in wide-field sky surveys, interferometric imaging, precision cosmology, exoplanet detection and characterization, and many subfields of stellar, Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, has resulted in complex data analysis challenges that must be solved to perform scientific inference. Research in astrostatistics and astroinformatics will be necessary to develop the state-of-the-art methodology needed in astronomy. Overcoming these challenges requires dedicated, interdisciplinary research. We recommend: (1) increasing funding for interdisciplinary projects in astrostatistics and astroinformatics; (2) dedicating space and time at conferences for interdisciplinary research and promotion; (3) developing sustainable funding for long-term astrostatisics appointments; and (4) funding infrastructure development for data archives and archive support, state-of-the-art algorithms, and efficient computing., Comment: Submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey call for science white papers

We describe features of the LSST science database that are amenable to scientific data mining, object classification, outlier identification, anomaly detection, image quality assurance, and survey science validation. The data mining research agenda includes: scalability (at petabytes scales) of existing machine learning and data mining algorithms; development of grid-enabled parallel data mining algorithms; designing a robust system for brokering classifications from the LSST event pipeline (which may produce 10,000 or more event alerts per night); multi-resolution methods for exploration of petascale databases; indexing of multi-attribute multi-dimensional astronomical databases (beyond spatial indexing) for rapid querying of petabyte databases; and more., Comment: 5 pages, Presented at the "Classification and Discovery in Large Astronomical Surveys" meeting, Ringberg Castle, 14-17 October, 2008

We compare the structural properties of two classes of galaxies at intermediate redshift: those in dynamically close galaxy pairs, and those which are isolated. Both samples are selected from the CNOC2 Redshift Survey, and have redshifts in the range 0.1 < z <0.6. Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images were acquired as part of a snapshot survey, and were used to measure bulge fraction and asymmetry for these galaxies. We find that paired and isolated galaxies have identical distributions of bulge fractions. Conversely, we find that paired galaxies are much more likely to be asymmetric (R_T+R_A >= 0.13) than isolated galaxies. Assuming that half of these pairs are unlikely to be close enough to merge, we estimate that 40% +/- 11% of merging galaxies are asymmetric, compared with 9% +/- 3% of isolated galaxies. The difference is even more striking for strongly asymmetric (R_T+R_A >= 0.16) galaxies: 25% +/- 8% for merging galaxies versus 1% +/- 1% for isolated galaxies. We find that strongly asymmetric paired galaxies are very blue, with rest-frame B-R colors close to 0.80, compared with a mean (B-R)_0 of 1.24 for all paired galaxies. In addition, asymmetric galaxies in pairs have strong [OII]3727 emission lines. We conclude that close to half of the galaxy pairs in our sample are in the process of merging, and that most of these mergers are accompanied by triggered star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 40 pages, including 15 figures. We resolve the extended X-ray emission from the prototypical ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. Extended, faint edge-brightened, soft X-ray lobes outside the optical galaxy are observed to a distance of 10 to 15 kpc on each side of the nuclear region. Bright plumes inside the optical isophotes coincide with the optical line emission and extend 11 kpc from end to end across the nucleus. The data for the plumes cannot be fit by a single temperature plasma, and display a range of temperatures from 0.2 to 1 keV. The plumes emerge from bright, diffuse circumnuclear emission in the inner 3 kpc centered on the Halpha peak, which is displaced from the radio nuclei. There is a close morphological correspondence between the Halpha and soft X-ray emission on all spatial scales. We interpret the plumes as a starburst-driven superwind, and discuss two interpretations of the emission from the lobes in the context of simulations of the merger dynamics of Arp 220., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; see also astro-ph/0208477 (Paper 1)

We present the first results from 60ks of observations of Arp 220 using the ACIS-S instrument on Chandra. We report the detection of several sources near the galaxy's nucleus, including a point source with a hard spectrum that is coincident with the western radio nucleus B. This point source is mildly absorbed (N_H ~ 3 x 10^22 cm^-2) and has an estimated luminosity of 4 x 10^40 erg/s. In addition, a fainter source may coincide with the eastern nucleus A. Extended hard X-ray emission in the vicinity raises the total estimated nuclear 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity to 1.2 x 10^41 erg/s, but we cannot rule out a hidden AGN behind columns exceeding 5 x 10^24 cm^-2. We also detect a peak of soft X-ray emission to the west of the nucleus, and a hard point source 2.5 kpc from the nucleus with a luminosity of 6 x 10^39 erg/s., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

A sample of 27 ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) systems has been imaged at 1.6 microns using the HST Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). These ULIRGs are from a larger sample also imaged with HST in the I-band. Images and catalog information for the NICMOS subsample, as well as brief morphological descriptions of each system are presented. Inspection of the infrared images and a comparison with optical images of these systems shows that at least 85% are obviously composed of two or more galaxies involved in a close interaction or merger event, with as many as 93% showing some signs of interaction history. Approximately 37% of the systems show either spectroscopic or morphological characteristics of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The infrared morphologies of these systems are generally less complicated or disturbed than their optical morphologies, indicating that some of the small-scale features seen in optical images are likely due to complicated patterns of dust obscuration, as well as widely distributed star formation activity. In some systems the high-resolution HST infrared images have revealed nuclear remnants that are obscured or unidentified in ground-based imaging, which has led to changes in previously determined interaction stage classifications or system content. We present HST WFPC2 V band imaging for 23 Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies taken from the QDOT redshift survey. The fraction of sources observed to be interacting is 87%. Most of the merging systems show a number of compact `knots', whose colour and brightness differ substantially from their immediate surroundings. Colour maps for nine of the objects show a non-uniform colour structure. Features include blue regions located towards the centres of merging systems which are likely to be areas of enhanced star formation, and compact red regions which are likely to be dust shrouded starbursts or AGN. The host galaxies of the QSOs in the sample were found to be either interacting systems or ellipticals. Our data shows no evidence that ULIRGs are a simple transition stage between galaxy mergers and QSOs. We propose an alternative model for ULIRGs based on the morphologies in our sample and previous N-body simulations. Under this model ULIRGs as a class are much more diverse than a simple transition between galaxy merger and QSO. We present early results from the analysis of HST imaging observations for several pairs of interacting galaxies. We include two cases that were specifically chosen to represent a strong early (young) encounter (Arp 81 = NGC 6621/6622) and a weak late (old) encounter (Arp 297 = NGC 5752/5754). The goals of the project include a determination of the timing, frequency, strength, and characteristics of the young star clusters formed in these two limiting cases of tidal encounters., Comment: 3 pages. We present results from an on-going Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of a large sample of ULIRGs (Ultra-Luminous IR Galaxies). New ground-based observations are now being used to complement the HST data and to assist in the interpretation of these complex objects. A rich spectroscopic, morphological, and dynamical diversity is found within the ULIRG population, nearly 100% of which are merger and/or collision remnants. In a large sample of ULIRGs imaged with HST, we have identified a significant subsample that shows evidence for multiple mergers. The evidence is seen among two classes of ULIRGs: (1) those with multiple remnant nuclei in their core, sometimes accompanied by a complex system of tidal tails; and (2) those that are in fact dense groupings of interacting (soon-to-merge) galaxies. We conservatively estimate that, in the redshift range 0.05

Integral field optical spectroscopy with the INTEGRAL fiber-based systemis used to map the extended ionized regions and gas flows in Mrk 273, one of the closest Ultraluminous Infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The Hbeta and [OIII]5007 maps show the presence of two distinct regions separated by 4'' (3.1 kpc) along position angle (PA) 240. The northeastern region coincides with the optical nucleus of the galaxy and shows the spectral characteristics of LINERs. The southwestern region is dominated by [OIII] emission and is classified as a Seyfert 2. Therefore, in the optical, Mrk 273 is an ultraluminous infrared galaxy with a LINER nucleus and an extended off-nucleus Seyfert 2 nebula. The kinematics of the [OIII] ionized gas shows (i) the presence of highly disturbed gas in the regions around the LINER nucleus, (ii) a high-velocity gas flow with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 2.4 x 10^3 km/s, and (iii) quiescent gas in the outer regions (at 3 kpc). We hypothesize that the high-velocity flow is the starburst-driven superwind generated in an optically obscured nuclear starburst, and that the quiescent gas is directly ionized by a nuclear source, like the ionization cones typically seen in Seyfert galaxies., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

We have used HST I-band images to identify Mrk 273X, the very unusual high-redshift X-ray-luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy found by ROSAT in the same field-of-view as Mrk 273. We have measured the photometric properties of Mrk 273X and have also analyzed the luminosity distribution of the faint galaxy population seen in the HST image. The luminosity of the galaxy and the properties of the surrounding environment suggest that Mrk 273X is the brightest galaxy in a relatively poor cluster at a redshift near 0.46. Its off-center location in the cluster and the presence of other galaxy groupings in the HST image may indicate that this is a dynamically young cluster on the verge of merging with its neighboring clusters. We find that Mrk 273X is a bright featureless elliptical galaxy with no evidence for a disk. It follows the de Vaucouleurs (r^{1/4}) surface brightness law very well over a range of 8 magnitudes. Though the surface brightness profile does not appear to be dominated by the AGN, the galaxy has very blue colors that do appear to be produced by the AGN. Mrk 273X is most similar to the IC 5063 class of active galaxies --- a hybrid Sy 2 / powerful radio galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 8 pages, including 4 postscript figures. We have used the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to study a large sample of ultraluminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs). With a rich legacy database of 150 high-resolution images, we are studying the fine-scale structure of this unique collection of violently starbursting systems. We review here some of the latest results from our survey. We present a simple morphological classification scheme, consisting of 4 ULIRG classes, showing that there is very little luminosity variation (in the mean) between the classes, and that there is equal likelihood of a ULIRG being a recent merger (single) as an on-going collision (multiple). It now appears that the fraction of ULIRGs that show evidence for interaction or merging is very close to 100%. A star-like nucleus is seen in about 15% of the ULIRGs, for which the dominant power source may be a dust-enshrouded AGN/QSO. Many of the results on ULIRGs are pointing to a complicated dynamical history for this sample of galaxies. One possible explanation for this dynamical diversity is the multiple-merger model proposed by Taniguchi & Shioya (1998, ApJ, 501, L167). We present strong observational evidence for multiple mergers among a large fraction of our ULIRG sample. HST is used to study the power sources and the interaction-induced tidal disturbances within the most luminous galaxies in the local universe -- the Ultra-Luminous IR Galaxies (ULIRGs) -- through the use of I-band images with WFPC2 and H-band images with NICMOS. Fulfillment of this fundamental goal requires astronomers to have sensitive, high angular and spectral resolution observations in the far-infrared/submillimeter (far- IR/sub-mm) spectral region. With half the luminosity of the universe and vital information about galaxy, star and planet formation, observations in this spectral region require capabilities similar to those currently available or planned at shorter wavelengths. In this paper we summarize the scientific motivation, some mission concepts and technology requirements for far-IR/sub-mm space interferometers that can be developed in the 2010-2020 timeframe.
