OBJECTIVES: Reptiles are considered an important reservoir of Salmonella species. This study evaluated the prevalence of Salmonella species in different species of gecko kept as pets in Italy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Faecal swab samples were collected from 70 clinically healthy geckos and examined for Salmonella species by culture that were then serotyped. RESULTS: Salmonella species were isolated from 24 of 70 (34·3%) samples. Eighteen isolates expressed resistance to ceftazidime and four isolates to ampicillin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Salmonella spp. can be isolated from apparently healthy captive gecko which should be considered as a potential source of infection for humans and other companion animals.

La salvaguardia del territorio è un punto cardine per sviluppo sostenibile, e risulta di fondamentale importanza adottare una politica che miri alla riduzione dei rischi naturali, poiché la loro pericolosità compromette, in maniera più o meno intensa, la vita umana, i beni e le risorse economiche, l?ambiente. I rischi geologici, com?è noto, interessano in maniera profonda il territorio calabrese, sia per il ruolo geodinamico fondamentale della Calabria nell'ambito del Mediterraneo, elemento di raccordo tra la catena siciliano-magrebide e la catena appenninica, sia per le modifiche naturali che si mettono in atto in questa area geologicamente giovane. La storia geologica della Calabria, sin dalla sua strutturazione, ha fatto si che questa terra nel tempo acquisisse un'estrema fragilità derivante dai suoi caratteri geologici, geomorfologici e strutturali. Gli ammassi rocciosi calabresi, costituiti per la maggior parte da rocce di natura cristallina pertanto maggiormente soggette ai processi alterativi, si mostrano estremamente fratturati e/o degradati con caratteristiche geotecniche scadenti, a cui si associa una vulnerabilità infrastrutturale tra le più alte di Italia. La complessità geologica intrinseca della Calabria congiuntamente all'uso inappropriato del territorio, per lungo tempo trascurato e violentato, mostra conseguenze disastrose in termini di esposizione al rischio. I rischi di rilevanza e gravità ingenti che espongono popolazioni e territorio calabresi fanno riferimento ad una molteplicità di fenomeni naturali: terremoto e/o tsunami, frane e smottamenti, alluvioni, erosione costiera, ecc. Se si guarda al passato, i fenomeni sismici verificatisi in Calabria sono tra i più catastrofici dell'area mediterranea, ricordiamo il terremoto del 1638 nel settore centro-settentrionale e il terremoto che nel 1905-1908, con una serie di violente scosse, colpi gran parte della regione. In termini di rischio idrogeologico la storia dell'ultimo ventennio calabro mostra eventi importanti, talvolta comprendenti porzioni estese di territorio (Soverato settembre 2000, Serre Vibonesi 2003, Cerzeto 2005, Vibo Valentia luglio 2006, intero territorio regionale autunno inverno 2009-2010, versante ionico reggino novembre 2015). L'intensità dei fenomeni di dissesto idrogeologico, connessi e acuiti da fenomeni atmosferici estremi legati ai cambiamenti climatici in atto, rappresentano importanti sorgenti di alterazione ambientale con conseguenze potenzialmente molto gravi in termini di ambiente, economia e vite umane. Le varie tipologie di eventi, coprono estensioni territoriali con scale spaziali comprese in intervalli molto diversificati, mentre la loro natura fenomenologica è intrinsecamente caratterizzata da notevole complessità ed instabilità temporale, con un comportamento fortemente dinamico ed un'evoluzione altrettanto variabile. Al fine di realizzare una corretta pianificazione e governo del territorio è necessario che si conoscano le caratteristiche intrinseche dell'evento (occorrenza, intensità, frequenza, durata), tali caratteristiche possono essere conosciute solo attraverso un attento studio ad ampio spettro. In questa prospettiva si inserisce il presente lavoro che propone, attraverso un caso studio di un'area del versante occidentale del Massiccio della Sila (San Pietro in Guarano), una metodologia di indagine che potrebbe fungere da linea guida in contesti geologici aventi le stesse caratteristiche.

Slow-moving landslides yearly induce huge economic loss worldwide in terms of damage to structures/infrastructures and interruption of human activities as well. Within the landslide risk management framework, the vulnerability analysis is a key step entailing procedures mostly based on the identification of the exposed elements, the damage classification and the definition of an intensity criterion. The present paper introduces a two-scale procedure for the analysis of building vulnerability to slow-moving landslides. The intensity parameter (i.e. absolute or differential settlement) derives from the information provided by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) satellite data, which in the last decade proved to be capable of providing cost-effective long-term displacement archives of structures/infrastructures. The obtained results over two slow-moving landslide-affected areas allowed the generation of empirical fragility curves for masonry buildings that, once further validated, can be valuably used for damage analysis and forecasting.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading cause of inherited intellectual disability, is caused by epigenetic silencing of the FMR1 gene, through expansion and methylation of a CGG triplet repeat (methylated full mutation). An antisense transcript (FMR1-AS1), starting from both promoter and intron 2 of the FMR1 gene, was demonstrated in transcriptionally active alleles, but not in silent FXS alleles. Moreover, a DNA methylation boundary, which is lost in FXS, was recently identified upstream of the FMR1 gene. Several nuclear proteins bind to this region, like the insulator protein CTCF. Here we demonstrate for the first time that rare unmethylated full mutation (UFM) alleles present the same boundary described in wild type (WT) alleles and that CTCF binds to this region, as well as to the FMR1 gene promoter, exon 1 and intron 2 binding sites. Contrariwise, DNA methylation prevents CTCF binding to FXS alleles. Drug-induced CpGs demethylation does not restore this binding. CTCF knock-down experiments clearly established that CTCF does not act as insulator at the active FMR1 locus, despite the presence of a CGG expansion. CTCF depletion induces heterochromatinic histone configuration of the FMR1 locus and results in reduction of FMR1 transcription, which however is not accompanied by spreading of DNA methylation towards the FMR1 promoter. CTCF depletion is also associated with FMR1-AS1 mRNA reduction. Antisense RNA, like sense transcript, is upregulated in UFM and absent in FXS cells and its splicing is correlated to that of the FMR1-mRNA. We conclude that CTCF has a complex role in regulating FMR1 expression, probably through the organization of chromatin loops between sense/antisense transcriptional regulatory regions, as suggested by bioinformatics analysis.

A deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DSGSD) and a number of landslides of different thickness and types affect the Greci slope (Lago, Calabria, Italy). The geological settlement of the area is characterized by the presence of tectono-metamorphic thrust sheet belonging to the Calabrian belt. The study concerns a moderately urbanized area, crossed by an important road, where the lithological-structural and hydrogeological conditions predispose to slope instabilities. This paper deals with the kinematic characteristics relative to the instability mechanisms in the Greci slope, defined with a long term monitoring. Specialized monitoring networks have been progressively realized since 1996 to measure the surficial and deep displacements (GPS benchmarks, GPS permanent stations and inclinometer verticals). After a period of continuous and intense rainfall (2008-2010), a detailed landslides inventory map has been prepared to update the landslides boundaries. The new elements and data acquired confirm that the mass movements mechanisms in the Greci slope are characterized by extremely slow or very slow rate of displacements (Cruden and Varnes classification). Moreover, new knowledge demonstrate the landslides may significantly accelerate and affect structures and infrastructures.

The economic crisis in Europe raised several complications in addressing infrastructure needs in public-based healthcare systems. In Western Europe, governments’ budget constraints, together with collateral healthcare-related issues such as ageing population, reduced the capability to develop modern and efficient infrastructure as well as technological upgrade of existing ones. Mental health facilities represent a peculiar aspect in this context, as pathologies require a unique treatment when compared to other medical services. Long-term hospitalization, day-by-day assistance, soft-approach therapies are specific features triggering the necessity of separate facilities for mental health treatment, or at least a distinct management within a general hospital. From an economic point of view, public-private partnerships (PPPs) could help decision-makers in tackling healthcare investment shortage, making the related infrastructure market appealing for private financing and management. As outlined in this commentary, the experience from the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in the United Kingdom represents a step-stone for privately-financed mental health facilities, with over 8,000 beds generated in the last 15 years, both in separate structures and in general hospitals. An analysis of this model demonstrate some benefits in terms of availability and efficiency have been reached, but concerns remain terms of value for money and side-services delivery.

Crystalline rocks are often subjected to several types of mass movements, depending on their weathering grade. These rocks are present in the European area along the Italian and French Alps, in the North-East area of Portugal, in the Sierra Nevada Massif (Spain) and in Greece. In particular, crystalline rocks are also widespread in Calabria and a high percentage of these rocks is present in the Sila, Serre and Aspromonte Massifs. Fresh or weathered crystalline rocks, highly fractured, may be affected by deep-seated landslides due to the presence of tectonic structures, which may predispose and control the landslide mechanisms. The Serra di Buda landslide, near the town of Acri (Cosenza), can be included among the deep-seated landslides which affect weathered crystalline rocks. Starting from the geological model, the analysis of the geotechnical data (digital terrain model, borehole logs, piezometer levels, superficial and deep displacements, geomaterial characteristics, etc.) allows to detect the uncertainties inherent the elements that concur to define the geotechnical model. To reduce some of these uncertainties a calibration by means of numerical modelling is carried out, and the results obtained show the usefulness of this approach.

AIM: To evaluate the presence of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. in stray cats in southern Italy. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and thirteen animals were trapped in two different environments (urban area, harbour area) of the city of Naples. From each cat, rectal swabs were collected. The samples were processed in order to detect thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. by culture methods. The positive samples were then confirmed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 19/113 (16.8%) stray cats, whereas Campylobacter coli was not isolated. The cat data (age, environment and sex) were analysed by two statistical analyses using the C. jejuni status (positive/negative) as a dependent variable. As regards statistical regression model results, age and environment were risk factors for C. jejuni positivity. In particular, cats older than 1 year had a significantly higher risk of being positive for C. jejuni than cats aged up to 1 year (OR = 10.440; P = 0.000). Moreover, cats living in the harbour area had a significantly higher risk to be a carrier of C. jejuni than cats living in urban area (OR = 17.911; P = 0.008). CONCLUSION: The findings of the present survey confirm stray cats as potential carriers of C. jejuni. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first study on the prevalence of C. jejuni in stray cats in Europe.

L'analisi delle conseguenze indotte agli edifici da frane a cinematica lenta riveste un ruolo fondamentale nell'ambito delle attività di gestione del rischio. Con riferimento all'area urbanizzata del Comune di Verbicaro (CS), la presente comunicazione evidenzia come l'uso congiunto di dati derivanti dall'elaborazione di immagini satellitari acquisite da sensori Radar ad Apertura Sintetica (SAR) mediante tecniche interferometriche differenziali (DInSAR) e i risultati del rilievo del danno agli edifici possa contribuire, ad un livello preliminare, ad individuare le relazioni che si stabiliscono tra causa (cinematismi dei corpi di frana attivi) ed effetti (danni alle strutture in elevazione) nonché ad indirizzare le analisi della vulnerabilità fisica mediante metodi empirici o numerici ad un livello intermedio e/o avanzato.

Le frane profonde (spessori superiori a circa 30-35 m), diffusamente presenti in numerosi contesti geo-ambientali, sovente determinano per le infrastrutture stradali condizioni di rischio. La riduzione del rischio nelle situazioni richiamate è difficilmente conseguibile con interventi strutturali di adeguata efficacia e di costo sostenibile. Dove è possibile si procede modificando il tracciato stradale, ma questa soluzione può non essere completamente risolutiva. Un esempio della problematica richiamata si ritrova nella località Serra di Buda, nel comune di Acri (CS), dove una frana profonda, che coinvolge un ammasso gneissico variamente e profondamente alterato e degradato, interessa la Strada Statale N. 660, principale via di accesso all'abitato di Acri. Per la frana profonda di Serra di Buda, che ricade all'interno di una più ampia Deformazione Gravitativa Profonda di Versante, è stato definito il modello geologico e di evoluzione e il modello geotecnico, che consente di simulare adeguatamente l'andamento nel tempo degli spostamenti. La frana di interesse è uno scorrimento traslazionale, con uno spessore massimo di circa 50 m, con la principale superficie di scorrimento che si sviluppa prevalentemente nella zona costituita da roccia completamente degradata. Nella nota, utilizzando i dati acquisiti dal monitoraggio degli spostamenti superficiali condotto con GPS, sono individuate alcune grandezze, ed i valori assunti dalle stesse, indicativi delle condizioni di rischio e delle possibili condizioni di transitabilità del tratto di sede stradale interessato dalla frana profonda. Le grandezze ed i valori individuati sono quindi utilizzati per definire criteri di accettabilità per la gestione del rischio dell'infrastruttura stradale nel tratto di interesse.
