We investigate flux-grown Sm-deficient Sm$_x$B$_6$ ($x < 1$) by global and local tools, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), electronic transport, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). All these tools indicate a remarkable persistence of the SmB$_6$ local structure in the flux-grown samples even for nominal Sm concentrations as low as $x=0.75$. As a consequence, the overall electronic properties of Sm$_x$B$_6$, and particularly the surface conductance at low temperature, is only affected locally by the Sm-deficiency., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Herein we show that non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering involving an $s$ core level is a powerful spectroscopic method to characterize the excited states of transition metal compounds. The spherical charge distribution of the $s$ core hole allows the orientational dependence of the intensities of the various spectral features to produce a spatial charge image of the associated multiplet states in a straightforward manner, thereby facilitating the identification of their orbital character. In addition, the $s$ core hole does not add an extra orbital angular momentum component to the multiplet structure so that the well-established Sugano-Tanabe-Kamimura diagrams can be used for the analysis of the spectra. For $\alpha$-MnS we observe the spherical charge density corresponding to its high spin $3d^5$ ($^6A_1$) ground state configuration and we were able to selectively image its excited states and identify them as $t_{2g}$ ($^5T_2$) and $e_g$ ($^5E$) with an energy splitting $10Dq$ of 0.78\,eV.

We employed small-angle neutron scattering to demonstrate that the magnetic skyrmion lattice can be realized in bulk chiral magnets as a thermodynamically stable state at temperatures much lower than the ordering temperature of the material. This is in the regime where temperature fluctuations become completely irrelevant to the formation of the topologically non-trivial magnetic texture. In this attempt we focused on the model helimagnet MnSi, in which the skyrmion lattice was previously well characterized and shown to exist only in a very narrow phase pocket close to the Curie temperature of 29.5~K. We revealed that large uniaxial distortions caused by the crystal-lattice strain in MnSi result in stabilization of the skyrmion lattice in magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the uniaxial strain at temperatures as low as 5~K. To study the bulk chiral magnet subjected to a large uniaxial stress, we have utilized $\mu$m-sized single-crystalline inclusions of MnSi naturally found inside single crystals of the nonmagnetic material Mn$_{11}$Si$_{19}$. The notion of a simple ordered state implies homogeneity. If the order is established by a broken symmetry, elementary Landau theory of phase transitions shows that only one symmetry mode describes this state. Precisely at points of phase coexistence domain states formed of large regions of different phases can be stabilized by long range interactions. In uniaxial antiferromagnets the so-called metamagnetism is an example of such a behavior, when an antiferromagnetic and field-induced spin-polarized paramagnetic/ferromagnetic state co-exist at a jump-like transition in the magnetic phase diagram. Here, combining experiment with theoretical analysis, we show that a different type of mixed state between antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism can be created in certain acentric materials. In the small-angle neutron scattering experiments we observe a field-driven spin-state in the layered antiferromagnet Ca3Ru2O7, which is modulated on a scale between 8 and 20 nm and has both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic parts. We call this state a metamagnetic texture and explain its appearance by the chiral twisting effects of the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange. The observation can be understood as an extraordinary coexistence, in one thermodynamic state, of spin orders belonging to different symmetries. Experimentally, the complex nature of this metamagnetic state is demonstrated by measurements of anomalies in electronic transport which reflect the spin-polarization in the metamagnetic texture, determination of the magnetic orbital moments, which supports the existence of strong spin-orbit effects, a pre-requisite for the mechanism of twisted magnetic states in this material., Comment: Supplementary materials included

By means of powder neutron diffraction we investigate changes in the magnetic structure of the coplanar non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge caused by an application of hydrostatic pressure up to 5\phantom{ }GPa. At ambient conditions the kagom\'e layers of Mn atoms in Mn$_3$Ge order in a triangular 120$^{\circ}$ spin structure. Under high pressure the spins acquire a uniform out-of-plane canting, gradually transforming the magnetic texture to a non-coplanar configuration. With increasing pressure the canted structure fully transforms into the collinear ferromagnetic one. We observed that magnetic order is accompanied by a noticeable magnetoelastic effect, namely, spontaneous magnetostriction. The latter induces an in-plane magnetostrain of the hexagonal unit cell at ambient pressure and flips to an out-of-plane strain at high pressures in accordance with the change of the magnetic structure.

We report growth of single crystals of the non-magnetic metallic delafossite PdRhO_{2}, comparing the results from three different methods. Complete crystallographic data were obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic structure calculations made using the refined structural parameters. Focused-ion beam microstructuring was used to prepare a sample for measurements of the in- and out-of-plane electrical resistivity, and the large observed anisotropy is qualitatively consistent with the cylindrical Fermi surface predicted by the calculations., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

The filled-skutterudite compound CePt4Ge12 is situated close to the border between intermediate-valence of Ce and heavy-fermion behavior. Substitution of Ge by Sb drives the system into a strongly correlated and ultimately upon further increasing the Sb concentration into an antiferromagnetically ordered state. Our experiments evidence a delicate interplay of emerging Kondo physics and the formation of a local 4f moment. An extended non-Fermi-liquid region, which can be understood in the framework of a Kondo-disorder model, is observed. Band-structure calculations support the conclusion that the physical properties are governed by the interplay of electron supply via Sb substitution and the concomitant volume effects., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Figure

X-ray and Neutron diffraction as well as muon spin relaxation and M\"ossbauer experiments performed on SrFe$_2$As$_2$ polycrystalls confirm a sharp first order transition at $T_0 = 205$,K corresponding to an orthorhombic phase distortion and to a columnar antiferromagnetic Fe ordering with a propagation vector (1,0,1), and a larger distortion and larger size of the ordered moment than reported for BaFe$_2$As$_2$. The structural and the magnetic order parameters present an remarkable similarity in their temperature dependence from $T_0$ down to low temperatures, showing that both phenomena are intimately connected. Accordingly, the size of the ordered Fe moments scale with the lattice distortion when going from SrFe$_2$As$_2$ to BaFe$_2$As$_2$.
