1. Signatures of ultralight bosons in the orbital eccentricity of binary black holes

Abstract

We show that the existence of clouds of ultralight particles surrounding black holes during their cosmological history as members of a binary system can leave a measurable imprint on the distribution of masses and orbital eccentricities observable with future gravitational-wave detectors. Notably, we find that for nonprecessing binaries with chirp masses ${\cal M} \lesssim 10\,M_\odot$, formed exclusively in isolation, larger-than-expected values of the eccentricity, i.e. $e\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ at gravitational-wave frequencies $f_{\rm GW} \simeq 10^{-2}\,$Hz, would provide tantalizing evidence for a new particle of mass between $[0.5,2.5] \times 10^{-12}\,$eV in nature. The predicted evolution of the eccentricity can also drastically affect the in-band phase evolution and peak frequency. 2. Two-body problem in theories with kinetic screening

Abstract

New light scalar degrees of freedom may alleviate the dark matter and dark energy problems, but if coupled to matter, they generally mediate a fifth force. In order for this fifth force to be consistent with existing constraints, it must be suppressed close to matter sources, e.g. through a non-linear screening mechanism. In this work, we investigate the non-relativistic two-body problem in shift-symmetric scalar-tensor theories that exhibit kinetic screening ($k$-mouflage), both numerically and analytically. We develop an approximate scheme, based on a Hodge-Helmholtz decomposition of the Noether current associated to the shift symmetry, allowing for a qualitative insight into the dynamics and yielding results in good agreement with the numerical ones in most of the parameter space. We apply the formalism to polynomial $k$-essence and to Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type theories, as well as to theories that develop ``anti-screening''. In the deep nonlinear regime, we find that the fifth force is screened slightly more efficiently in equal-mass systems than in extreme mass-ratio ones. However, we find that systems with comparable masses also exhibit regions where the screening is ineffective. 3. Gravitational waves and kicks from the merger of unequal mass, highly compact boson stars

Abstract

Boson stars have attracted much attention in recent decades as simple, self-consistent models of compact objects and also as self-gravitating structures formed in some dark-matter scenarios. Direct detection of these hypothetical objects through electromagnetic signatures would be unlikely because their bosonic constituents are not expected to interact significantly with ordinary matter and radiation. However, binary boson stars might form and coalesce emitting a detectable gravitational wave signal which might distinguish them from ordinary compact object binaries containing black holes and neutron stars. We study the merger of two boson stars by numerically evolving the fully relativistic Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations for a complex scalar field with a solitonic potential that generates very compact boson stars. Owing to the steep mass-radius diagram, we can study the dynamics and gravitational radiation from unequal-mass binary boson stars with mass ratios up to $q\approx23$ without the difficulties encountered when evolving binary black holes with large mass ratios. Similar to the previously-studied equal-mass case, our numerical evolutions of the merger produce either a nonspinning boson star or a spinning black hole, depending on the initial masses and on the binary angular momentum. We do not find any evidence of synchronized scalar clouds forming around either the remnant spinning black hole or around the remnant boson stars. Interestingly, in contrast to the equal-mass case, one of the mechanisms to dissipate angular momentum is now asymmetric, and leads to large kick velocities (up to a few $10^4\,{\rm km/s}$) which could produce wandering remnant boson stars. 4. Soliton boson stars, Q-balls and the causal Buchdahl bound

Abstract

Self-gravitating non-topological solitons whose potential admits multiple vacua are promising candidates for exotic compact objects. Such objects can arise in several extensions of the Standard Model and could be produced in the early Universe. In this work, we focus on objects made from complex scalars (gravitating Q-balls/soliton boson stars), deriving analytic solutions in spherical symmetry and comparing them with fully numerical ones. In the high-compactness limit we find that these objects present an effectively linear equation of state, thus saturating the Buchdahl limit with the causality constraint. Far from that limit, these objects behave either as flat space-time Q-balls or (in the low-compactness limit) as mini boson stars stabilized by quantum pressure. 5. Parametric-resonance based phenomenology of gravitating axion configurations

Abstract

One of the most compelling candidates for Dark Matter (DM) are light pseudo-scalar particles (axions), motivated by the strong CP problem and axiverse scenario in string theory. Depending on their mass and type of self-interaction, these particles can build self-gravitating configurations such as compact objects, DM clumps or even galactic DM halos. On the other hand, superradiant instabilities can produce long-living extended configurations (scalar clouds) gravitating around Black Holes (BHs). As these scalars are real and harmonic, their interaction with the other matter components can induce a parametric resonance that might lead to their observable signatures. First, we consider the orbital dynamics of test particles in these axion configurations, show when resonances can occur and discuss the secular evolution of the orbital elements. This scenario can lead to observable consequences for binary pulsars or S stars around the supermassive BH in our Galaxy. Secondly, we discuss electromagnetic (EM) field instabilities in homogeneous axion configurations as well as scalar clouds around Kerr BHs. These axion-photon resonances can quench superradiant instabilities, while producing an observable signature in the EM sector. Abstract

The coupling between scalar and vector fields has a long and interesting history. Axions are one key possibility to solve the strong CP problem and axion-like particles could be one solution to the dark matter puzzle. Given the nature of the coupling, and the universality of free fall, nontrivial important effects are expected in regions where gravity is strong. Here, we show that i. A background EM field induces an axionic instability in flat space, for large enough electric fields. Conversely, a homogeneous harmonic axion field induces an instability in the Maxwell sector. When carried over to curved spacetime, this phenomena translates into generic instabilities of charged black holes (BHs). ii. In the presence of charge, BH uniqueness results are lost. We find solutions which are small deformations of the Kerr-Newman geometry and hairy stationary solutions without angular momentum, which are `dragged' by the axion. Axion fields must exist around spinning BHs if these are immersed in external magnetic fields. The axion profile can be obtained perturbatively from the electro-vacuum solution derived by Wald. iii. Ultralight axions trigger superradiant instabilities of spinning BHs and form an axionic cloud in the exterior geometry. The superradiant growth can be interrupted or suppressed through axionic or scalar couplings to EM. These couplings lead to periodic bursts of light, which occur throughout the history of energy extraction from the BH. We provide numerical and simple analytical estimates for the rates of these processes. iv. Abstract

We consider motion in spherically symmetric but time-dependent backgrounds. This problem is of interest, for example, in the context of ultralight dark matter, where galactic haloes produce a time-dependent and periodic gravitational potential. We study the properties of motion of stars in such spacetimes, for different field strengths and frequency, and including dissipative effects. We show that orbital resonances may occur and that spectroscopic emission lines from stars in these geometries exhibit characteristic, periodic modulation patterns. In addition, we work out a fully relativistic and weak-field description of a special class of time-periodic geometries, that of scalar oscillatons. When applied to the galactic center, our results indicate that the motion of S2-like stars may carry distinguishable observational imprints of ultra-light dark matter., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. Abstract

Background and Aims Stroke registry is a tool for improving stroke care and achieving goals pointed in the Stroke Action Plan for Europe. The Registry of Stroke Care Quality (RES-Q) was launched by ESO-EAST (Enhancing and Accelerating Stroke Treatment) in November 2016 to provide a tool for monitoring the quality of stroke care in hospitals throughout Europe. The aim was to compare results captured from the RES-Q registry in Croatia during 2018 and the first quarter of 2019 and 2020 year. Methods Data on demographics, stroke care pathway, specific acute treatment issues, stroke prevention issues in all acute stroke admissions in Croatia during 2018 and first quarter of 2019 and 2020 through RES-Q registry were analyzed. Results Acute hospitals which provide stroke treatment recruited 579 patients during the 2018 year and 750 patients and 677 patients during the first quarter of 2019 and 2020 respectively. Figure 1. shows the map of Croatia with all centers (green – all three periods, yellow – two periods, orange – one period, red and blue–no data). Table 1. shows the number of patients recruited by site and time period. Table 2. shows patients’ main baseline characteristics and outcome measures. Conclusions Our results showed still low rates of recanalization therapies across Croatia, with a decrease of the door- to-groin time. Secondary stroke prevention might be improved by increasing the usage of statins and performing smoking cessation programs. All stroke centers should be involved in stroke registry to achieve more accurate data which would guide us to improve stroke care in Croatia.

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.
