Abstract

The Pyrenean Platform for Observation of the Atmosphere (P2OA) is a coupled plain–mountain instrumented platform in southwestern France. It is composed of two physical sites: the "Pic du Midi" mountaintop observatory (2877 m a.s.l.) and the "Centre de Recherches Atmosphériques" (600 m a.s.l). Both sites are complementarily instrumented for the monitoring of climate-relevant variables and the study of meteorological processes in a mountainous region. The scientific topics covered by P2OA include surface–atmosphere interactions in heterogeneous landscapes and complex terrain, the physics and chemistry of atmospheric trace species at a large scale, the influence of local- and regional-scale emissions and transport on the atmospheric composition, and transient luminous events above thunderstorms. With a large number of instruments and a high hosting capacity, P2OA contributes to atmospheric sciences through (i) building long-term series of atmospheric observations, (ii) hosting experimental field campaigns and instrumental tests, and (iii) educational training in atmospheric observation techniques. In this context, P2OA is part of the French component of the Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS-Fr) and also contributes to the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) research infrastructure and to several European or international networks. Here, we present the complete instrumentation of P2OA and the associated datasets, give a meteorological characterization of the platform, and illustrate the potential of P2OA and its dataset with past or ongoing studies and projects. Abstract

This article is devoted to the presentation of the MAP-IO observation program. This program, launched in early 2021, has enabled the observation of nearly 700 days of measurements over the Indian and Southern Ocean thanks to the equipment of 17 meteorological and oceanographic scientific instruments on board the ship Marion Dufresne. Several observation techniques have been developed to respond to the difficulties of observations on board ships, in particular for passive remote sensing data, as well as quasi-autonomous data acquisition and transfer. The first measurements made it possible to draw up unprecedented climatological data of the Southern Ocean of the size distribution and optical thickness of aerosols, of the concentration of trace gases and greenhouse gases, of UV, and of integrated water vapor. High resolution observations of phytoplankton in surface waters have also shown a great variability in latitude, in terms of abundance and community structure (diversity). The operational success of this program and these unique scientific results all together establish a proof of concept and underline the need to transform this program into a permanent observatory.

The multi-year rotations over the Indian Ocean will enable us to assess the trends and seasonal variability of phytoplankton, greenhouse gases, ozone, and marine aerosols in a sensitive and poorly documented climatic region. Without being exhaustive, MAP-IO should make it possible to better understand and assess the biological carbon pump, to study the variability of gases and aerosols in a region that is remote in relation to the main anthropogenic sources, and to monitor the transport of stratospheric ozone by the Brewer–Dobson circulation. 14. Sensitivity of Shipborne GNSS Estimates to Processing Modeling Based on Simulated Dataset

Abstract

The atmospheric water vapor is commonly monitored from ground Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements, by retrieving the tropospheric delay under the Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) component, linked to the water vapor content in the atmosphere. In recent years, the GNSS ZWD retrieval has been performed on shipborne antennas to gather more atmospheric data above the oceans for climatology and meteorology study purposes. However, when analyzing GNSS data acquired by a moving antenna, it is more complex to decorrelate the height of the antenna and the ZWD during the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) processing. Therefore, the observation modeling and processing parametrization must be tuned. This study addresses the impact of modeling on the estimation of height and ZWD from the simulation of shipborne GNSS measurements. The GNSS simulation is based on an authors-designed simulator presented in this article. We tested different processing models (elevation cut-off angle, elevation weighting function, and random walk of ZWD) and simulation configurations (the constellations used, the sampling of measurements, the location of the antenna, etc.). According to our results, we recommend processing shipborne GNSS measurements with 3° of cut-off angle, elevation weighting function square root of sine, and an average of 5 mm·h−1/2 of random walk on ZWD, the latter being specifically adapted to mid-latitudes but which could be extended to other areas. This processing modeling will be applied in further studies to monitor the distribution of water vapor above the oceans from systematic analysis of shipborne GNSS measurements.

Abstract

During the C-SWOT-2023 campaign, two experimental approaches were tested in SWOT zones in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. An unmanned surface vehicle (USV) recorded meso- and sub-mesoscale processes in the northern current off Toulon. GNSS systems were deployed on various platforms (ship, buoys, USV) to map sea surface height., Au cours de la campagne C-SWOT-2023, deux approches expérimentales ont été testées dans les zones de SWOT au nord-ouest de la mer Méditerranée. Un drone de surface (USV) a enregistré les processus méso et sous-mésoscales dans le courant nord au large de Toulon. Des systèmes GNSS ont été déployés sur différentes plates-formes (navire, bouées, USV) pour cartographier la hauteur de la surface de la mer.

Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. 18. Routine Measurement of Water Vapour Using GNSS in the Framework of the Map-Io Project

Abstract

The “Marion Dufresne Atmospheric Program-Indian Ocean” (MAP-IO) project is a research program that aims to collect long-term atmospheric observations in the under-instrumented Indian and Austral Oceans. As part of this project, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) antenna was installed on the research vessel (R/V) Marion Dufresne in October 2020. GNSS raw data is intended to be used to retrieve Integrated Water Vapour (IWV) content along the Marion Dufresne route, which cruises more than 300 days per year in the tropical and austral Indian Ocean. This paper presents a first assessment of this GNSS-based IWV retrieval, based on the analysis of 9 months of GNSS raw data acquired along the route of the R/V Marion Dufresne in the Indian Ocean. A first investigation of GNSS raw data collected during the first 5 months of operation has highlighted the bad positioning of the antenna on the R/V that makes it prone to interference. Changing the location of the antenna has been shown to improve the quality of the raw data. Then, ship-borne GNSS-IWV are compared with IWV estimates deduced using more conventional techniques such as European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) fifth reanalysis (ERA5), ground-launched radiosondes and permanent ground GNSS stations operating close to the route of the R/V Marion Dufresne. The rms difference of 2.79 kg m−2 shows a good match with ERA5 and subsequently improved after the change in location of the GNSS antenna (2.49 kg m−2). The match with ground-based permanent GNSS stations fluctuates between 1.30 and 3.63 kg m−2, which is also shown to be improved after the change in location of the GNSS antenna. However, differences with ground-launched radiosondes still exhibit large biases (larger than 2 kg m−2). Finally, two operational daily routine analyses (at day+1 and day+3) are presented and assessed: the rms of the differences are shown to be quite low (1 kg m−2 for the day+1 analyses, 0.7 kg m−2 for the day+3 analys

Abstract

International audience; Ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements from nearly fifty stations distributed over the Caribbean Arc have been analysed for the period 1 January-29 February 2020 in the framework of the EUREC 4 A (Elucidate the Couplings Between Clouds, Convection and Circulation) field campaign. The aim of this effort is to deliver high-quality Integrated Water Vapour (IWV) estimates to investigate the moisture environment of mesoscale cloud patterns in the Tradewinds and their feedback on the large-scale circulation and energy budget. This paper describes the GNSS data processing procedures and assesses the quality of the GNSS IWV retrievals from four operational streams and one reprocessed research stream which is the main data set used for offline scientific applications.

27. IWV observations in the Caribbean Arc from a network of ground-based GNSS receivers during EUREC4A

Abstract

Ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements from nearly fifty stations distributed over the Caribbean Arc have been analysed for the period 1 January–29 February 2020 in the framework of the EUREC4A (Elucidate the Couplings Between Clouds, Convection and Circulation) field campaign. The aim of this effort is to deliver high-quality Integrated Water Vapour (IWV) estimates to investigate the moisture environment of mesoscale cloud patterns in the Tradewinds and their feedback on the large-scale circulation and energy budget. This paper describes the GNSS data processing procedures and assesses the quality of the GNSS IWV retrievals from four operational streams and one reprocessed research stream which is the main data set used for offline scientific applications. The uncertainties associated with each of the data sets, including the zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) to IWV conversion methods and auxiliary data, are quantified and discussed. The IWV estimates from the reprocessed data set are compared to the Vaisala RS41 radiosonde measurements operated from the Barbados Cloud Observatory (BCO) and to the measurements from the operational radiosonde station at Grantley Adams international airport (GAIA). A significant dry bias is found in the GAIA humidity observations with respect to the BCO sondes (−2.9 kg m−2) and the GNSS results (−1.2 kg m−2). A systematic bias between the BCO sondes and GNSS is also observed (1.7 kg m−2) where the Vaisala RS41 measurements are moister than the GNSS retrievals. The IWV estimates from a colocated microwave radiometer agree with the BCO soundings after an instrumental update on 27 January, while they exhibit a dry bias compared to the soundings and to GNSS before that date. IWV estimates from the ECMWF fifth generation reanalysis (ERA5) are overall close to the GAIA observations, probably due to the assimilation of these observations in the reanalysis. However, during several events where strong peaks in IWV occurred, ERA5 is shown to significantly underestimate the GNSS derived IWV peaks. Two successive peaks are observed on 22 January and 23/24 January which were associated with heavy rain and deep moist layers extending from the surface up to altitudes of 3.5 and 5 km, respectively. ERA5 significantly underestimates the moisture content in the upper part of these layers. The origins of the various moisture biases are currently being investigated. We classified the cloud organisation for five representative GNSS stations across the Caribbean Arc and found that the environment of Fish cloud patterns to be moister than that of Flowers cloud patterns which, in turn, is moister than the environment of Gravel cloud patterns. The differences in the IWV means between Fish and Gravel were assessed to be significant. Finally, the Gravel moisture environment was found to be similar to that of clear, cloud-free conditions. The moisture environment associated with the Sugar cloud pattern has not been assessed because it was hardly observed during the first two months of 2020. Abstract

A ground-based network of more than 1200 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) was analysed using GIPSY-OASIS II software package for the documentation of time and space variations of water vapor in atmosphere during the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream impact EXperiment (NAWDEX) during fall 2016. The network extends throughout the North Atlantic, from the Caribbeans to Morocco through Greenland. This paper presents the methodology used for GNSS data processing, screening, and conversion of Zenith Tropospheric Delay (ZTD) estimates to Integrated Water Vapor content (IWV) using surface parameters from reanalysis. The retrieved IWV are used to evaluate the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalyses ERAI and ERA5. ERA5 shows an overall improvement over ERAI in representing the spatial and temporal variability of IWV over the study area. The mean bias is decreased from 0.31±0.63 to 0.19±0.56 kg m−2 (mean ±1σ over all stations) and the standard deviation reduced from 2.17±0.67 to 1.64±0.53 kg m−2 combined with a slight improvement in correlation coefficient from 0.95 to 0.97. At regional scale, both reanalyses show a general wet bias at mid and northern latitudes but a dry bias in the Caribbeans. We hypothesize this results from the different nature of data being assimilated over the tropical oceans. This GNSS IWV data set is intended to be used for a better description of the high impact weather events that occurred during the NAWDEX experiment.

Abstract

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred hours of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft, four global-ocean class research vessels, an advanced ground-based cloud observatory, a flotilla of autonomous or tethered measurement devices operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface, a network of water stable isotopologue measurements, complemented by special programmes of satellite remote sensing and modeling with a new generation of weather/climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that \EURECA explored — from Brazil Ring Current Eddies to turbulence induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation — are presented along with an overview \EURECA’s outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.

This paper describes the GNSS processing method and compares the GNSS IWV retrievals with IWV estimates from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) fifth ReAnalysis (ERA5), from the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) infra-red products, and from terrestrial GNSS stations located along the tracks of the ships. The ship-borne GNSS IWVs retrievals from R/V Atalante and R/V Meteor compare well with ERA5, with small biases (−1.62 kg m−2 for R/V Atalante and +0.65 kg m−2 for R/V Meteor) and a root mean square (RMS) difference about 2.3 kg m−2. The results for the R/V Maria S. Merian are found to be of poorer quality, with RMS difference of 6 kg m−2 which are very likely due to the location of the GNSS antenna on this R/V prone to multipath effects. The comparisons with ground-based GNSS data confirm these results. The comparisons of all three R/V IWV retrievals with MODIS infra-red product show large RMS differences of 5–7 kg m−2, reflecting the enhanced uncertainties of this satellite product in the tropics. These ship-borne IWV retrievals are intended to be used for the description and understanding of meteorological phenomena that occurred during the campaign, east of Barbados, Guyana and northern Brazil. Abstract

Ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements from nearly 50 stations distributed over the Caribbean arc have been analysed for the period 1 January-29 February 2020 in the framework of the EUREC(4)A (Elucidate the Couplings Between Clouds, Convection and Circulation) field campaign. The aim of this effort is to deliver high-quality integrated water vapour (IWV) estimates to investigate the moisture environment of mesoscale cloud patterns in the trade winds and their feedback on the large-scale circulation and energy budget. This paper describes the GNSS data processing procedures and assesses the quality of the GNSS IWV retrievals from four operational streams and one reprocessed research stream which is the main data set used for offline scientific applications. The uncertainties associated with each of the data sets, including the zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD)-to-IWV conversion methods and auxiliary data, are quantified and discussed. The IWV estimates from the reprocessed data set are compared to the Vaisala RS41 radiosonde measurements operated from the Barbados Cloud Observatory (BCO) and to the measurements from the operational radiosonde station at Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), Bridgetown, Barbados. A significant dry bias is found in the GAIA humidity observations with respect to the BCO sondes 2:9 kgm(-2)) and the GNSS results (1:2 kgm(-2)). A systematic bias between the BCO sondes and GNSS is also observed (1.7 kgm(-2)), where the Vaisala RS41 measurements are moister than the GNSS retrievals. The IWV estimates from a collocated microwave radiometer agree with the BCO soundings after an instrumental update on 27 January, while they exhibit a dry bias compared to the soundings and to GNSS before that date. IWV estimates from the ECMWF fifth-generation reanalysis (ERA5) are overall close to the GAIA observations, probably due to the assimilation of these observations in the reanalysis. Abstract

The statistical properties of atmospheric water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) determined as the ratio of Raman lidar signals backscattered from water vapor and nitrogen molecules are studied. It is shown that WVMR estimates can be biased by a small percentage at low signal photon-counting rates due to fluctuations in the nitrogen signal in the denominator of the ratio, the magnitude of the bias being linked to the signal-to-noise ratio of the nitrogen signal. This is particularly important when unbiased estimates are required as in the case of climate studies and global positioning system (GPS) signal calibration. Different bias corrections and a modified ratio formulation are proposed in order to correct or eliminate this bias. The method is successfully applied in processing signals obtained with an experimental Raman lidar system devoted to calibrate GPS signals for slant path delays. It is shown to reduce biases into negligible values in both WVMR and wet path delay estimates in the range interval of 0-7 km. OCIS codes: 010.3920, 010.7030, 010.3640, 280.3640.

Abstract

The Ma&iuml, do high-altitude observatory located in Reunion Island (21 ∘ S, 55.5 ∘ E) is equipped with the Lidar1200, an innovative Raman lidar designed to measure the water vapor mixing ratio in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere, to perform long-term survey and processes studies in the vicinity of the tropopause. The calibration methodology is based on a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) IWV (Integrated Water Vapor) dataset. The lidar water vapor measurements from November 2013 to October 2015 have been calibrated according to this methodology and used to evaluate the performance of the lidar. The 2-year operation shows that the calibration uncertainty using the GNSS technique is in good agreement with the calibration derived using radiosondes. During the MORGANE (Ma&iuml, do ObservatoRy Gaz and Aerosols NDACC Experiment) campaign (Reunion Island, May 2015), CFH (Cryogenic Frost point Hygrometer) radiosonde and Raman lidar profiles are compared and show good agreement up to 22 km asl, no significant biases are detected and mean differences are smaller than 9% up to 22 km asl.

Abstract

National audience; Le positionnement différentiel en temps réel (RTK) est la technique de positionnement GNSS en temps réel la plus utilisée actuellement. De précision centimétrique, elle s'est largement développée en particulier avec la mise en place des réseaux RTK (N-RTK). La principale faiblesse de ce mode de positionnement par GNSS est la nécessité de disposer d'une ou plusieurs stations de référence, de préférence proche, pour une précision optimale. D'un autre coté, le positionnement ponctuel précis par GPS (PPP), apparu dans les milieux scientifiques dans les années 1990, s'est largement développé au cours des années 2000. Il présente l'avantage de fournir une position en mode absolu, c'est-à-dire calculée indépendamment de toute station de référence.
