27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 4306-4315, A PhotoVoltaic (PV) hybrid system combines PV with other forms of electricity generation, usually a diesel generator. However, a concentrating PhotoVoltaic (CPV) hybrid system substitutes the PV generator for a CPV generator. The system presented in this paper uses CPV as the main generator in combination with a storage system and the grid. The system obtains energy form the CPV and storage system on normal usage. If this energy is not enough, the system takes energy from the grid, which acts as a backup power supply. The load of the system consists of an air conditioning system of an office building. This paper presents the results obtained from the first months of operation of the CPV Hybrid System installed at Instituto de Sistemas Fotovoltaios de Concentración (ISFOC) facilities together with exhaustive simulations in order to model the system behaviour and be able to improve the selfconsumption ratio and the life of the batteries.

In particular, it focuses on theoretical and simulated studies of the energy flows and exchanges that take place within the system and the influence that Demand-Side Management and storage systems have. Different factors based on the energy flows of the system have been defined for the study. Finally, an economic study, focused on the profitability shown by the self-consumption, has been included.

Power generation of PV systems depends on meteorological conditions: irradiance and temperature. Accurate forecast of PV production in the short term is necessary for photovoltaics to be considered a reliable energy source. Different forecast models have been tested: Aguiar, ARIMA, numeric weather prediction and persistence. Models have been tested during a full year. Every model provided hourly forecasts, 24 hours in advance, of irradiance and energy production. Model assessment was done with measured data from a PV system located in Madrid, Spain. Numeric weather prediction models exhibits the best performance. The improvement over the persistence model was of 30 %. However, more complex forecasting methods will be needed in order to better improve these results.

24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 3745-3751, Losses due to shading have a significant impact on PV systems performance, being very relevant in building integrated systems. Although the number of building integrated PV systems has grown over the last years there’s a lack of studies on the performance of these systems. This paper presents an original methodology for estimating losses due to shading and a comparison of well-know models widely used for estimating the energy produced for a system. Both methodology and models have been validated over a year with data from two similar PV systems placed on the south façade of a building belonging to the Technical University of Madrid. The results of this study are shown as well as the improvement in accuracy obtained by taking into account the losses due to shading.

25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition / 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, 6-10 September 2010, Valencia, Spain; 4866-4870, An Active Demand Side Management system that combines new PV hybrid technology with Demand Side Management strategies has been presented: the “GeDELOS-PV” system. In this study the system has been programmed to maximise the amount of PV electricity used on-site (self-consumption), either directly or indirectly through battery storage. Simulations have been done of the Self-consumption achieved for different storage sizes, and experimental measurements have been also carried out in a prototype of self-sufficient solar house, with only storage and with storage and Demand Side Management Strategies. The results demonstrated that the combination of small-scale storage with Demand Side Management significantly improves the local use of PV, thus increasing the PV value for the user. This combination will play an important role in the future smart grids.
