The chemical variability and the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of the leaf essential oil from Ivorian Isolona dewevrei were investigated for the first time. Forty-seven oil samples were analyzed using a combination of CC, GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C-NMR, thus leading to the identification of 113 constituents (90.8–98.9%). As the main components varied drastically from sample to sample, the 47 oil compositions were submitted to hierarchical cluster and principal components analyses. Three distinct groups, each divided into two subgroups, were evidenced. Subgroup I−A was dominated by (Z)-β-ocimene, β-eudesmol, germacrene D and (E)-β-ocimene, while (10βH)-1β,8β-oxido-cadina-4-ene, santalenone, trans-α-bergamotene and trans-β-bergamotene were the main compounds of Subgroup I−B. The prevalent constituents of Subgroup II−A were germacrene B, (E)-β-caryophyllene, (5αH,10βMe)-6,12-oxido-elema-1,3,6,11(12)-tetraene and γ-elemene. Subgroup II−B displayed germacrene B, germacrene D and (Z)-β-ocimene as the majority compounds. Germacrene D was the most abundant constituent of Group III, followed in Subgroup III−A by (E)-β-caryophyllene, (10βH)-1β,8β-oxido-cadina-4-ene, germacrene D-8-one, and then in Subgroup III−B by (Z)-β-ocimene and (E)-β-ocimene. The observed qualitative and quantitative chemical variability was probably due to combined factors, mostly phenology and season, then harvest site to a lesser extent. The lipoxygenase inhibition by a leaf oil sample was also evaluated. The oil IC50 (0.020 ± 0.005 mg/mL) was slightly higher than the non-competitive lipoxygenase inhibitor NDGA IC50 (0.013 ± 0.003 mg/mL), suggesting a significant in vitro anti-inflammatory potential.

This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of the leaf essential oil from Ivoirian Isolona dewevrei. A combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C-NMR) was used to analyze two oil samples (S1 and S2). Detailed analysis by repetitive column chromatography (CC) of essential oil sample S2 was performed, leading to the isolation of four compounds. Their structures were elucidated by QTOF-MS, 1D and 2D-NMR as (10&beta, H)-1&beta, 8&beta, oxido-cadin-4-ene (38), 4-methylene-(7&alpha, H)-germacra-1(10),5-dien-8&beta, ol (cis-germacrene D-8-ol) (52), 4-methylene-(7&alpha, H)-germacra-1(10),5-dien-8&alpha, ol (trans-germacrene D-8-ol) (53) and cadina-1(10),4-dien-8&beta, ol (56). Compounds 38, 52 and 53 are new, whereas NMR data of 56 are reported for the first time. Lastly, 57 constituents accounting for 95.5% (S1) and 97.1% (S2) of the whole compositions were identified. Samples S1 and S2 were dominated by germacrene D (23.6 and 20.5%, respectively), followed by germacrene D-8-one (8.9 and 8.7%), (10&beta, oxido-cadin-4-ene (7.3 and 8.7), 4-methylene-(7&alpha, ol (7.8 and 7.4%) and cadina-1(10),4-dien-8&beta, ol (7.6 and 7.2%). Leaves from I. dewevrei produced sesquiterpene-rich essential oil with an original chemical composition, involving various compounds reported for the first time among the main components. Integrated analysis by GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C-NMR appeared fruitful for the knowledge of such a complex essential oil.

The leaves and stem of Zanthoxylum lepreurii were collected in two localities of Cote d’Ivoire, namely San-Pedro (South-east) and Adzope (South). The collects were submitted to hydrodistillation with the Clevenger apparatus. The oils obtained were investigated by 13C NMR spectroscopy, GC (RI) and GC-MS. Thus, twenty-eight components accounting for 90.9-96.8% were identified. Essential oils from leaves and stem bark of Z. leprieurii exhibited the predominance of two acyclic ketones. Undecan-2-one and tridecan-2-one have been identified as the main components. Undecan-2-one was found in abundance in the stem (30.3%) and the leaves (10.0%) respectively in Adzope and San-Pedro, while tridecan-2-one characterized all the samples (15.5%-77.2%). In addition with monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids identified as major components led to the new chemotypes of Z. leprieurii essential oil.

International audience; The investigation of the stem essential oil of Laggera pterodonta(DC.) Sch. Bip. ex Oliv. (Asteraceae) from C^ote d’Ivoire was carriedout, using a combination of chromatographic (GC-RI, CC, pc-GC)and spectroscopic (GC-MS, 13C NMR) techniques. This study led tothe identification of fifty constituents of which two new naturalcompounds 7b,11b-epoxy-eudesman-4a-ol and 7a,11a-epoxyeudesman-4a-ol. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2DNMR spectroscopy after pc-GC purifying. Finally, 98.9% of thewhole composition of the oil was identified with a high amountof 2,5-dimethoxy-p-cymene (78.9%). The other significant componentswere a-humulene (6.2%), (E)-b-caryophyllene (1.7%), thymylmethyl oxide (1.7%), a-phellandrene (1.5%), p-cymene (1.2%),(3aH,4bH,6aH,1aMe)-1,6-epoxy-3-hydroxycarvotanacetone angelicacid ester (1.1%) and 10-epi-c-eudesmol (1.0%).

International audience; Nine samples of Xylopia rubescens Oliv. (Annonaceae) trunk bark oil have been analyzed by combination of GC(RI) and 13C NMR. The contents of the majorcomponents varied substantially from sample to sample: (8Z,11Z,14Z)-heptadeca-8,11-14-trien-2-one (14.7-33.0%), furanoguaia-1,4-diene (0-36.8%) and-pinene (0.9-29.0%). The content of a few components reached punctually an appreciable amount: -pinene (up to 10.7%), germacrene D (up to 12.0%),bicyclogermacrene (up to 10.0%) and spathulenol (up to 10.0%). X. rubescens trunk bark oil displayed a fair chemical variability

International audience; The chemical composition of 35 leaf oil samples from Polyalthia longifolia (Sonnerat) Thwait., growingin five districts in Abidjan and its suburbs, has been investigated by GC(FID) in combination withretention indices, GC–MS and 13C-NMR. In total, 30 individual components have been identified,mostly sesquiterpenes. The contents of the main components varied substantially from sample tosample: (E)-β-caryophyllene (18.9–31.4%), α-zingiberene (6.1–22.1%), allo-aromadendrene (12.4–17.3%) and α-humulene (6.4–11.0%). However, PCA was unable to differentiate groups within the35 compositions. The chemical composition of Ivorian P. longifolia leaf oils may be summarizedas follow: (E)-β-caryophyllene (M = 25.3%; SD = 1.2), allo-aromadendrene (M = 15.2%; SD = 0.5),α-zingiberene (M = 13.6%; SD = 3.6) and α-humulene (M = 8.4%; SD = 0.2).

International audience; The chemical composition of a leaf oil sample from Ivoirian Xylopia staudtii Engler & Diels (Annonaceae) has been investigated by a combination of chromatographic [GC(RI)] and spectroscopic (GC-MS, 13C NMR) techniques. Thirty-five components that accounted for 91.8% of the whole composition have been identified. The oil composition was dominated by the furanoguaiadienes furanoguaia-1,4-diene (39.0%) and furanoguaia-1,3-diene (7.5%), and by germacrene D (17.5%). The composition of twelve other leaf oil samples demonstrated qualitative homogeneity, but quantitative variability. Indeed, the contents of the major components varied substantially: furanoguaia-1,4-diene (24.7-51.7%) and germacrene D (5.9-24.8%). The composition of X. staudtii leaf oil is close to that of X. rubescens leaf oil but varied drastically from those of the essential oils isolated from other Xylopia species. 13C NMR spectroscopy appeared as a powerful and complementary tool for analysis of sesquiterpene-rich essential oils

International audience; The chemical composition of four oil samples of Xylopia aethiopica isolated from trunk bark harvested in three Ivoirian forests was investigated by chromatographic (GC with retention indices) and spectroscopic techniques (MS, 13C NMR). Thirty compounds accounting for 90.2-98.2% of the oil have been identified. X. aethiopica stem bark produced a monoterpene-rich essential oil, whose composition was dominated by β-pinene (37.0-61.6%) and α-pinene (13.0-19.3%). Two samples out of four contained also 3,3-dimethyl-1- vinylcyclohexene (up to 6.4%) and 4,4-dimethyl-2-vinylcyclohexene (up to 12.7%).

International audience; Polyalthia longifolia produces sesquiterpene-rich essential oils (EOs) whose compositions varied substantially from sample to sample depending on the origin of the plant (Nigeria and Vietnam). Nothing is known about the phytochemistry of Ivoirian P. longifolia. The aim of the present study was to characterize Ivoirian P. longifolia through the chemical composition of the leaf oil and to develop a strategy that allows the identification of minor oxygenated sesquiterpenes whose MS data are not compiled in commercial or laboratory-constructed MS libraries. The EO was submitted to gas chromatography (GC) retention index (RI), GC-mass spectrometry (MS) and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Then hydrocarbons and oxygenated components were separated and the oxygenated fraction was chromatographed on silica gel. The fractions were analysed by GC(RI) and 13C NMR. Seventy compounds accounting for 91.8% of the EO were identified. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, (E)-β-caryophyllene (27.8%), α-zingiberene (20.0%) and allo-aromadendrene (15.0%), were the major components. Various oxygenated sesquiterpenes whose MS data were not compiled in commercial and laboratory-made MS libraries were identified by comparison of their chemical shift values in the spectrum of the fraction of CC with those reported in the literature and compiled in a laboratory-constructed 13C NMR data library. The composition of the investigated Ivoirian P. longifolia oil sample presented similarities and differences with Nigerian and Vietnamese oils. Combined analysis of Ivoirian P. longifolia EO by chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques including 13C NMR without isolation of the components, appeared particularly efficient to identify minor components of EOs, whose MS spectra are insufficiently differentiated or MS data are not compiled in commercial and lab-constructed MS libraries.

International audience; The chemical composition of 48 leaf oil samples isolated from individual plants of Cleistopholis patens (Benth.) Engl. et Diels harvested in four Ivoirian forests was investigated by GC-FID (determination of retention indices), GC/MS, and 13C-NMR analyses. The main components identified were b-pinene (traces-59.1%), sabinene (traces-54.2%), (E)-b-caryophyllene (0.3-39.3%), linalool (0.1-38.5%), (E)-b-ocimene (0.1-33.2%), germacrene D (0.0-33.1%), a-pinene (0.1-32.3%), and germacrene B (0-21.2%). The 48 oil compositions were submitted to hierarchical clustering and principal components analyses, which allowed the distinction of three groups within the oil samples. The oil composition of the major group (Group I, 33 samples) was dominated by (E)-b-caryophyllene and linalool. The oils of Group II (eight samples) contained mainly b-pinene and a-pinene, while those of Group III (seven samples) were dominated by sabinene, limonene, and b-phellandrene. Moreover, the compositions of the Ivoirian C. patens leaf oils differed from those of Nigerian and Cameroonian origins.

International audience; Introduction - In the course of on-going work on the characterisation of aromatic plants from the Ivory Coast we investigated the composition of the root oil from Xylopia aethiopica. Objectives - The aim of this work was to investigate the chemical composition of X. aethiopica root oil and elucidate the structure of two new compounds. Methodology - Analysis of the essential oil was carried out using a combination of chromatographic (CC, GC with retention indices) and spectroscopic techniques (MS, 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR). Results - Twenty seven components, accounting for 95.6% of the whole composition, were identified including various compounds for which spectroscopic data were absent on commercial computerised MS libraries. Three compounds are reported for the first time as natural compounds and the structure of two new compounds, ,4-dimethyl-2-vinylcyclohexenene and endo-5-methoxy-3-patchoulene, has been elucidated using extensive two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. Conclusion - The composition of X. aethiopica root oil is dominated by two dimethylvinylcyclohexene isomers. It differs drastically from the composition of leaf and fruit oils of the same plant. The combination of analytical techniques appeared crucial for a fruitful analysis.

International audience; The compositions of essential oil isolated from leaves, stem bark and roots of Pachypodanthium staudtii Engl. & Diels growing wild in Côte d'Ivoire, were investigated by GC (retention indices) and 13C NMR. The oils were found to contain mostly hydrocarbons and aromatic oumpounds. The composition of root and stem bark oil were dominated by 2,4,5-trimethoxystyrene (42.7 and 27.9% respectively), followed by Sabinene (15.4-15.8%). Conversely, b-elemene, E-b-caryophyllene, b-selinene, b-bisabolene, d-cadinene, 2,4,5-trimethoxy-1-vinylbenzene were the major components of the leaf oil.

International audience; Leaves (16 samples) and stem bark (four samples) of Xylopia villosa were collected in two forests of south-eastern Côte d'Ivoire. The chemical composition of essential oils was investigated by gas chromatography (GC; in combination with retention indices) and 13C nuclear resonance (NMR). Thirty-three compounds accounting for 85.9-95.9% of the oil have been identified. Xylopia villosa produces a monoterpene-rich essential oil, whose composition was dominated by sabinene or (Z)-B-ocimene, one or the other compound being the major component. One atypycal leaf oil sample exhibited myrcene as major component.

International audience; The chemical composition of 48 essential-oil samples isolated from the leaves of Xylopia aethiopica harvested in six Ivoirian forests was investigated by GC-FID and 13C-NMR analyses. In total, 23 components accounting for 82.5-96.1% of the oil composition were identified. The composition was dominated by the monoterpene hydrocarbons b-pinene (up to 61.1%) and a-pinene (up to 18.6%) and the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon germacrene D (up to 28.7%). Hierarchical cluster and principal component analyses allowed the distinction of two groups on the basis of the b-pinene and germacrene D contents. The chemical composition of the oils of Group I (38 oil samples) was clearly dominated by bpinene, while those of Group II (10 samples) were characterized by the association of b-pinene and germacrene D. The leaves collected in the four inland forests produced b-pinene-rich oils (Group I), while the oil samples belonging to Group II were isolated from leaves harvested in forests located near the littoral.
