Abstract

Le Building Information Modeling (BIM) est une innovation qui regroupe un ensemble de méthodes, processus et outils de travail permettant d’alimenter et d’exploiter des informations d’un ouvrage bâti tout au long de son cycle de vie. Les CDE (Common Data Environment) sont des espaces numériques ou plateformes qui supportent les processus BIM. Ils offrent des ensembles de services numériques qui permettent de stocker, gérer et échanger des données de natures variées. Plusieurs initiatives récentes les positionnent au coeur du développement de l’interopérabilité dans les pratiques BIM en initiant la standardisation de leurs fonctionnalités. Dans cet article, nous revenons sur la notion de CDE et son origine ainsi que sur les initiatives récentes qui mettent en évidence les enjeux des CDE. Malgré leur standardisation en cours, notre recherche met en évidence leur grande diversité. Nous proposons une classification qui permet d’appréhender cette hétérogénéité plus facilement.

Abstract

Universities are facing many challenges to their efforts to introduce building information modeling (BIM) in engineering education. Many research efforts have been dedicated to the subject and addressed some specific aspects of the issue. Thus, there is no comprehensive framework to provide decision-makers with practical and neutral guidelines. The framework proposed in this paper identifies the main challenges to address. A case study from a Canadian engineering school is used to evaluate and to validate the proposed framework, and to illustrate the challenges. The strategy of integrating BIM in engineering education should be based on the specific skills the students are expected to acquire. It is then possible to define the appropriate teaching approaches. An effective implementation strategy should be gradual to progressively raise community awareness, learn from mistakes, and identify best practices. A particular emphasis should be placed on the needs of the local industry. Key words: BIM, engineering education research, theoretical framework, curriculum development, decision-making. Les universites doivent relever de nombreux defis au niveau de leurs efforts pour presenter la modelisation des donnees du batiment (<< building information modeling, BIM >>) en enseignement dans le domaine du genie. Beaucoup d'efforts de recherche ont ete consacres sur ce sujet et ont aborde quelques aspects specifiques de la question. Ainsi, il n'y a aucun cadre general qui fournit aux decideurs des directives pratiques et neutres. Le cadre propose dans cet article identifie les principaux defis sur lesquels on doit se pencher. Une etude de cas d'une ecole d'ingenieurs canadienne est utilisee afin d'evaluer et de valider le cadre propose, et d'en illustrer les defis. La strategie pour integrer la BIM dans l'enseignement dans le domaine du genie devrait reposer sur les competences specifiques auxquelles on s'attend que les etudiants acquierent. 35. BIM-based checking method for the mass timber industry

Abstract

Since the 1990s, mass timber constructions have become more and more popular. This type of construction has characteristics that are ideal for incorporating building information modeling (BIM). A mass timber structure implies offsite prefabrication at the factory, which generates modeling specificities. Although digitalization and BIM are becoming more and more common, and some studies have focused on BIM for mass timber construction, none of them focus on model checking for mass timber construction. In construction projects, there is still no general method that synthesizes the possibilities offered by BIM-based model checking in general, and research on the conformity of mass timber models in particular is almost non-existent. Our research objective is to provide a general step-by-step method summarizing the process of model compliance study with dedicated tools. To conduct this work, we first solidified our understanding of the problem by interviewing professionals from the mass timber construction industry. Next, we developed our method iteratively, supported by tools, and then validated it with three model-checking case studies. This method consists of five steps: checking the specifications, digital environment implementation, requirement deciphering, calculation, and compliance results’ analysis. We then applied our method in three case studies. The results of the case studies are mixed: some audits were successful, while others were not, because barriers to auditing were encountered (missing information, impossible interpretation of data for the model properties, etc.). The obstacles encountered show that, to be efficient, BIM must be conducted on high-quality models, which is not often the case in real-life situations.

36. Construction simulation and environmental impact analysis: Towards a 4D-based analysis of road project variants

Abstract

Road construction work has a multitude of impacts on its host environment, and the effect of these impacts varies according to the areas it crosses. Taking these impacts into account from the earliest stages of project planning is the ideal approach pursued by planners to ensure that their plans not only take these impacts into account but also mitigate their effects as much as possible. Drawing up a project schedule that considers the impact of the work requires an in-depth understanding of its scale, spatial extent, and timing. In practice, however, such an understanding is difficult to achieve due to the complex and variable nature of impacts. To help project planners understand the impacts of a road project from the outset so they can better plan mitigation measures, we have developed a conceptual framework for four-dimensional Building Information Modeling (4D BIM) deployment that visualizes the most significant impacts on the project site’s surrounding environment in terms of their spatial extent and progression over time. By testing the method on a case study of a road improvement project in northwestern Quebec, the method shows that, compared with traditional 2D methods, the proposed 3D and 4D impact visualization modeling provides an integral perspective for visualizing and understanding spatial changes in project impacts over time and enables different possible project implementation variants to be evaluated with relative ease

37. Collaborative virtual reality in construction comparative study of two remote multi-user systems

Abstract

Ineffective collaboration and communication between the stakeholders of a construction project are one of the most difficult problems to solve in the AEC industry. The rapid development of new technologies has reformed the construction industry in recent years. Indeed, adopting BIM technology and its dimensions improves the collaboration process. The integration of emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) based on a BIM model is a potential solution to optimize communication. However, most of the studies on virtual reality and its applications in the construction industry have so far focused on the single-user experience which does not support collaboration and interaction between construction project teams. Multi-user remote virtual reality can offer a solution to the problems mentioned above. Several tools have been developed in other fields such as the video game industry, but their applicability in the construction industry has not been evaluated in the literature. Our research aims to compare two remote multi-user virtual reality support systems to characterize their potential use in the construction industry with BIM models. We then performed a demonstration in the form of two fictitious scenarios to evaluate the proposed tools. This allowed us to identify the potential benefits of the two remote multiuser VR systems to support collaboration and to identify limitations and future improvements. While both systems offer interesting remote multi-user functionality, the Vizard multi-user application can only work over a local area network, which is a major limitation to remote user collaboration. In addition to the features common to both systems, Photon Unity Networking (PUN) offers the ability to communicate with voice in real time.

38. Practitioners' concerns about their liability toward BIM collaborative digital mockups: Case study in civil engineering

Abstract

Building information modeling (BIM) involves the use of collaborative digital mock-ups of an asset to streamline design, building, and operation processes. Collaborative work and the use of an integrated digital mock-up offers many advantages but raises several problems regarding the liability of stakeholders in construction projects. Practitioners involved in the design process of a building (engineers and architects) practice very high-liability professions for which the use of a digital mock-up implies potentially high stakes. Although liability issues have been identified in the literature as a hindrance to BIM implementation, practitioners’ concerns toward their liability have only barely been investigated. In this paper, we propose to explore engineers’ concerns about their liability toward using BIM collaborative digital mock-ups with a case study in civil engineering. We documented these concerns through an exploratory study consisting of semi-structured interviews. The main contribution of the paper is therefore an organized list of concerns. These include: the alignment between their way of working and professional rules, the clarity of the assignment of liabilities, and the reliability of the digital mock-up. These stem from a liability risk that practitioners perceive because of uncertainty about liability allocation and uncertainty regarding the reliability of digital mock-ups. Our research work is part of an overall effort to understand the problems faced by practitioners when implementing new practices associated with BIM and to provide solutions. The results are therefore extensively discussed in order to identify hypotheses and avenues of work to address the identified concerns. The specific context (engineers, in Quebec) and the exploratory nature of the study implies that the results are not generalizable to a wider population. 40. Investigating the challenges related to combining BIM and Last Planner System on construction sites

Abstract

The construction industry is facing a gradual but important transformation toward more productivity and collaboration. In this framework, two major approaches are often cited in the literature as having the potential to improve the practices in the industry: Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Lean Construction. Several scientific studies have demonstrated the synergy of these two approaches and very recent research has reported positive results from the use of software applications as support for their implementation on construction sites. However, the stakes of such integration have been very little studied. This article presents the results of a research project conducted within a general contractor firm that decided to implement BIM and Last Planner System (LPS) on its construction sites. The research uses a four-stage action research approach, including the characterization of the research issue, the establishment of an action plan, its implementation and its evaluation. Compared to recent related studies, the research is less enthusiastic. While it highlights the need for new tools to improve production planning and control, it also points to a strong resistance to change by practitioners at the site. They emphasize the necessity for adequate pre-service training and the need for new resources that can work full-time on the ongoing training of site teams. In addition, some limitations of the tool lead workers to believe that it can quickly become a factor that slows down their daily work rather than improving it. Based on the advice of professionals, the paper formulates some recommendations to the industry, the researchers and the software developers.

50. Use of KROQI as a level-2 common data environment in the French construction industry

Abstract

The implementation of a common data environment (CDE) in the construction industry appears to be crucial for organizing and managing the flow of important information within construction projects effectively. However, it is observed that the investments and the costs associated with setting up such environments are often dissuasive, particularly for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By launching the Plan BIM 2022 in 2017, the French government aimed to combat the emerging digital divide between large and small construction companies. At the heart of this state-funded plan was the development of a CDE-like collaborative platform called KROQI. The work presented in this article proposes a three-level matrix to characterize common data environments based on computer-supported collaboration work theories. The paper demonstrates how KROQI can be characterized as a level-2 CDE solution. Based on a preliminary study, it explores the perception and satisfaction of practitioners with respect to the features proposed by KROQI. The results show that, among the large variety of features proposed, some are hardly ever used. Therefore, while KROQI appears to be an excellent industry-wide solution aimed at federating initiatives towards digital collaboration centered around BIM models, there is definitely room for improvement.
