Abstract

The ophiolite of Sivas (Turkey) was studied in order to define the chronology of different alteration events related to a series of serpentinization and carbonation episodes. Six samples were investigated, representative of different types of ophicalcite (partially carbonated serpentinite). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to determine the bulk mineralogy and the bulk Fe3+/Fetot ratio, respectively. Electron microprobe and secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) analyses were also conducted to identify the chemical composition of different mineral phases in addition to the carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of calcite. An initial, i.e. pre-obduction, phase of olivine and pyroxene serpentinization was followed by a brecciation event associated with precipitation of massive serpentine. This first alteration event occurred during exhumation of the peridotites to the seafloor, followed by a carbonation event at temperatures in the range 35‒100 °C. A low-temperature (∼35 °C) carbonation event occurred between 90 and 65 Ma. Finally, a reheating of the system likely occurred after the obduction at 55‒40 Ma, resulting in a carbonation episode followed by late serpentinization. Our study presents the first direct evidence of serpentinization after obduction. In that geological context, the hydrogen produced during the proposed multiphase serpentinization may have been trapped by the salt deposits overlying the ophiolite but subsurface data will be necessary to define potential traps and reservoirs; further studies are also needed to determine whether the serpentinization process is still ongoing.

Abstract

X-ray transmission (XRT) and computed tomography (CT) was used on five samples from the Niaz porphyry Cu–Mo deposit in Iran, representing different alteration zones. Analysis of three-dimensional CT data revealed structural information and groups of elements with low, medium and high attenuation, which were assigned to minerals previously determined by scanning electron microscopy. Thus, the mineralization can be located, and the metal/waste ratio can be estimated, leading to more precise ore body modelling and process parameter determination. CT is useful for selected samples as it is time consuming. XRT can be used as real-time process on conveyor belts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

During the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 385, diagenetic carbonates were recovered at different depths (from 10 to 534 mbsf) in six drilling sites (U1545, U1546, U1547, U1548, U1550 and U1552) distributed from the northern spreading segment of the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California) to ~52 km away from the axial graben. As this basin is a site of active sea floor spreading, hemipelagic diatomaceous and organic-rich sediments rapidly accumulating at all these drilling sites are influenced by magmatic intrusions, at depths greater than 90 mbsf. The geothermal gradient observed ranges from 135 °C/km to 682 °C/km. Except in sites U1547 and U1548, both located close to a circular hydrothermal mound (called Ringvent), sills are in thermal equilibrium with the surrounding sediments. Carbonate samples (over fifty) collected during this expedition are composed of fine-grained micritic sediments and weakly to strongly lithified carbonate concretions. The petrographic observations and XRD analyses show that stoichiometric dolomite is the dominant authigenic carbonate phase, with minor contribution of Fe-rich dolomite, and low- to high-Mg calcite. Centimeter-sized concretions composed of ankerite and Mg-calcite also occur in the sediments collected from the northern axial graben (site U1550) and a site with subsurface gas hydrates (U1552), respectively. Other authigenic minerals are often associated with these carbonates including pyrite, barite, anhydrite, zeolites and crystalline opal (opal-CT). The carbon isotopic compositions of the bulk carbonate from these samples exhibit large variations ranging from -28.9 to +12.0‰ VPDB. Very low d 13C values, only measured in a centimetre-seized concretion associated with cold methane seepage (site U1552), indicate that the bicarbonate used for carbonate precipitation is derived from anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) coupled with bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR). The very high d13C values of diagenetic carbonates indicate the use of biogenic 13C-rich CO2 reservoirs related to active methanogenesis or other autotrophic microbial pathways. The oxygen isotopic compositions of these carbonates cover a large range from -5.3 to +4.0‰ VPDB. The decreasing d18O values with increasing depth reflect the effect of high geothermal gradients due to the close proximity of magmatic sills.

Abstract

We present here a combined EMPA and EBSD study of the late Proterozoic massive magnetiteepidote-amphibole ore of Takab (NW Iran). Magnetite (Mt) forms large (≤1 mm) oscillatory dark and light grey zoned grains (BSE images). Bright Mt needles and bands crosscut or are aligned along cleavages and fracturing planes. Some bands contain relict hematite (Hem), and show, then, abundant porosity. EBSD inverse pole figure maps reveal inter-grain orientation changes in grey Mt. Moreover, intra-grain misorientations, similar to undulose extinction in other minerals, indicate dislocations in the crystal lattice formed through deformation. Relict Hem and bright Mt show the coincidence of the orientations of the planes {0001} Hem //{111} Mt and{11-20} Hem //{110} Mt , which is a good evidence for a direct transformation process. Grey Mt show low and variable Fe content (68.5-71.5 wt.%) with high Si (1 wt.%), Mg and Al (1500-4000 ppm) and Ca (2100-3300 ppm), these elements being likely trapped on the lattices of Mt during crystallization. Abstract

Copper porphyries represent complex alteration zones, hosting variable grades of Cu- (Au-Mo), but also Pb, Zn, Te, Bi and Ag. Processing of these ores becomes more difficult and more expensive as metal grades are lower and highly variable. Reducing the operational costs while increasing the resource efficiency at constant production is the challenge for the mining industries. Five samples from the Niaz porphyry copper (Mo)-deposit in northwest Iran, representing each a specific alteration zone were investigated by dual energy (DE) and multienergy (ME) X-ray transmission (XRT) as well as X-ray computed tomography (CT). Thesenon-destructive techniques are powerful tools for locating metal concentrations and evaluating porosities. Two samples come from the potassic phyllic zones: (1) A microgranular quartz-diorite is composed of sericitized albite, chloritized biotite and quartz veinlets. Ore phases are chalcopyrite, Fe-sulfides, galena. Magnetite, barite and Ti-oxides also occur. (2) A granular quartz-monzonite is composed of sericitized feldspars, quartz, amphibole, biotite, chlorite and ankerite. Ore phases are molybdenite and Cu-sulfides. Veins are filled with galena and Cu-Bi-sulfides (+Cd, Sb, As). A coarse-grained diorite composed of feldspars, amphiboles, epidotes, biotite, chlorite and calcite characterizes the propylitic alteration zone. Apatite, zircon, sphene, magnetite and ilmenite are present. Ore phases are molybdenite, galena, pyrite, Te-Bi phases and sphalerite. A microgranular quartz-diorite hosting quartz, feldspars, amphibole, biotite, kaolinite and siderite represents the phyllic-argillic mineralized zone. Ore phases are various Cu-sulfides. Minor barite, monazite, thorite and galena occur. The peripheral part of the porphyry is a coarse-grained skarn composed of chlorite, amphiboles, garnet, epidote, diopside, quartz, calcite and apatite. Ore phases are chalcopyrite, pyrite, Ag-sulfides and Te-Bi clusters attached to galena. Scheelite, magnetite, sphalerite and galena are observed in sulfides. Analysis of reconstructed three-dimensional CT volume data revealed structure information as well as two or three different groups of elements (low, medium and high effective atomic number). With these data, priorly calibrated by SEM, mine-geologists can assign grey values to minerals based on densities. Thus, it is possible to locate rapidly mineralization and evaluate porositiesin the alteration zones for unknown samples. With XRT, fractions of heavy and light materialscan be revealed in two-dimensional radiographs. While CT is useful for a small selection ofsamples due to its high time consumption, XRT can be used as a real-time process on conveyor belts. This information contribute to ore body modelling and predicting optimal process parameters like crushing or sorting.

International audience; The siliceous iron ore deposits in the NW part of Iran (Takab region) are hosted within para-metamorphic rocks, and are attributed to Late Proterozoic age. They comprise massive, banded, nodular and disseminated ore types, which are mainly composed of magnetite. Magnetite contains traces of Al. It is variously hematitized. Hematite show higher Al, Si and Ca contents than the magnetite. The iron oxides contain inclusions of zircons, apatite, uraninite, Mn-carbonate and euhedral monazite. Later hydrothermal solutions precipitated goethite surrounding the magnetite-hematite-maghemite grains and replacing hematite. Barite occurs in fractures of iron oxides, Mn-Ba-Pb oxi-hydroxides and scheelite occur interstitial to iron oxides. The ∂ 56 Fe values observed for magnetite decrease from disseminated to nodular iron ore (averages: +1.3, +0.4 and-0.4 ‰ (± 0.2 ‰), respectively). Iron isotopes of hematite in disseminated & layered ore show higher ∂ 56 Fe values than those of magnetite, in the range of +2 to +4 ‰ (± 0.2 ‰).

Abstract

International audience; Mantle-derived xenoliths rapidly brought to the surface by alkaline magmas commonly exhibit reaction features valuable for elucidating magmatic and metasomatic processes that occur in the mantle, or during the transport to the surface, or post-entrainment processes. In this contribution, we focus on a suite of fresh anhydrous and hydrous amphibole-bearing spinel lherzolites from Devès in the Southern Domain of the French Massif Central. We present three different cases: (1) reaction zones developed around primary pyroxenes, amphibole and spinel; (2) the presence of carbonate as veins and vesicles in composite carbonate-silicate pockets from well-developed reaction zones; (3) the presence of secondary orthopyroxene in veins cross-cutting or rimming primary olivine. Case 1  The presence of low Ti (0.5 wt.% TiO 2), Cr-and Mg-rich (1.2 wt.% Cr 2 O 3 , mg# = 88) pargasite coronae around relict spinel testifies for mantle modal metasomatism by a melt of alkali basalt composition.  Reactional textures around amphibole consist of secondary clinopyroxene, olivine, spinel, ± plagioclase, formerly volatile-filled bubbles, and small (10 µm) patches of fresh colourless glass. A single decompression process is not sufficient for explaining the amphibole breakdown and the secondary phase composition, but additional components (alkalis) brought by a percolating agent are required.  In anhydrous samples, similar secondary assemblages are observed at the contact between primary spinel and orthopyroxene. The presence of former amphibole is ruled out by the Al-rich compostion of secondary spinels. The secondary assemblage is likely to result from reaction between the primary phases and the same percolating agent as above. Case 2  Some carbonate veins cut spongy large clinopyroxene crystals resulting from a former metasomatic event by an infiltrating (alkali?) melt as in case (1).  The carbonate fills globular vesicles in reaction zones that contain secondary clinopyroxene, olivine, spinel, ± quenched plagioclase and small glass patches or rims. Abstract

International audience; The major iron deposits occur in the northeast and central part of Iran. However, iron ore deposits in the northwest (e.g. Takab area) are still little studied. In this region, the most important iron deposits are hosted within para-metamorphic rocks and are attributed to Late Proterozoic age. The iron ore grades from disseminated to layered and nodular type.  Disseminated ore: Magnetite forms euhedral grains (~400 µm-1.5 mm) free of inclusions. The grains are slightly hematized. The matrix minerals are quartz, minor K-feldspar and phengite. The feldspars host P (U, Th)-bearing phases, zircon and barite. Rutile and phosphates also occur interstitial to the matrix grains. The magnetite is characterized by ∂ 56 Fe (+0.7 to +2 ‰ ± 0.2 ‰).  Layered ore: Coarse and discontinuous bands with interstitial quartz. Magnetite forms individual grains (~50 µm to several hundreds of µm). It is altered to hematite. Goethite is abundant around hematized magnetite and in veins crosscutting the oxides. Pyrite relics are present in goethite. Magnetite grew around detrital zircon and hosts droplet-like inclusions of PbS and ZnS, while P-bearing minerals occur in goethite and quartz. In the matrix, apart from quartz, Mn-Ba-oxides and barite (partly replacing hyalophane) and, rarely, uraninite occur. The magnetite is characterized by ∂ 56 Fe (-0.3 to +1 ‰ ± 0.2 ‰).  Nodular ore: Magnetite forms mm-sized agglomerates partly elongated and disrupted in the quartz matrix. Other matrix minerals are similar to those in the layered ore. Magnetite is not hematized. P-bearing minerals, Mn-and Fe-carbonates and uraninite inclusions are hosted in magnetite. The magnetite is characterized by ∂ 56 Fe (-1 to +0.5 ‰ ± 0.2 ‰). The ∂ 56 Fe values observed for magnetite decrease from disseminated to nodular iron ore (averages: +1.3, +0.4 and-0.4 ‰ (± 0.2 ‰), respectively). Iron isotopes of hematite in disseminated and layered ore show higher ∂ 56 Fe values than those of magnetite, in the range of +2 to +4 ‰ (± 0.2 ‰). The following scenario is proposed:  A hydrothermal (volcano-) sedimentary environment based on: (i) ore textures and major mineralogy (iron oxides with chemically precipitated quartz and detrital zircon); (ii) the occurrence of Mn-Fe-carbonates, barite and sulphide inclusions in magnetite and in matrix K-Ba feldspars; (iii) ∂ 56 Fe in magnetite of nodular ore slightly negative. An oxidation event based on: (i) partial transformation of magnetite into hematite; (ii) remobilisation of Mn-Ba-U as oxide and sulfate into veins; (iii) increasing ∂56Fe with progressive oxidation from nodular to disseminated magnetite reaching highest values in hematite. A shift in ∂ 56Fe towards positive values in oxidizing environments was also observed for example by Rouxel et al (2008, Chem Geol 252, 214-227).

Abstract

International audience; Siliceous banded and nodular iron ores intercalated in mica schists and marbles of Precambrian age, were studied from the NW part of Iran (Takab region). The iron ore is composed of magnetite, which was partly transformed into maghemite and hematite along fractures and cleavages during a major oxidizing deformation event. Quartz shows undulose extinction. Both quartz and iron oxides partly form 120° triple junctions, but essentially grain boundary migrations. In the nodular ore, grain boundary migration is more pronounced leading also to grain isolation quartz is partially annealed. Iron oxides are agglomerated, elongated and disrupted. These finding indicate a longer recrystallization episode in the nodular ore. The iron oxide grains contain inclusions of euhedral, zoned and corroded zircons and euhedral monazite. Magnetite contains traces of Al. Hematite and goethite show higher Al, Si and Ca contents. Later hydrothermal solutions precipitated goethite surrounding the magnetite-hematite-maghemite grains and replacing hematite. Barite and uraninite occur in fractures of iron oxides, Mn-Ba-Pb oxi-hydroxides and scheelite occur interstitial to iron oxides.

Abstract

We present the analysis of an AlCuLi quasi‐crystal on an electron probe microanalyser equipped with spectrometers working both in the soft and ultra‐soft x‐ray ranges. This original combination enables obtaining the Li Kα and Al L2,3 emissions with a reflection plate spectrometer and the Al Kβ and Cu Lα emissions with a curved‐crystal spectrometer. All these emissions are emission bands, sensitive to the chemical state of the emitting element. From the observation of the valence band shapes, it is confirmed that the electronic structure of the quasi‐crystal is quite different from that of the corresponding pure metals. From the measured intensities, quantification is performed using the PAP model. The weight fractions calculated from the ultra‐soft x‐ray emission intensities are very dependent on the chosen database of mass attenuation coefficients. Comparison with fractions calculated with small uncertainty in the soft x‐ray range enables choosing which databases are the most relevant for the ultra‐soft x‐ray range. Both quantifications performed from ultra‐soft and soft x‐ray emissions are compatible, leading to the Al60Cu24Li16 weight concentration of the quasi‐crystal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, embalming the cadaver of the elite was common practice, being a highly technical treatment mixing vegetal and mineral substances. To assess the exact kind of embalming reserved for the dead body (with the practical necessities of desiccation and good odour), we performed a full biomedical analysis of the mummified remains of John Plantagenet of Lancaster, first Duke of Bedford, regent of France for his nephew, the English King Henri VI (died 1435 AD). Here, we show, among other aspects, that the body was embalmed using substances whose origins were in apothecary and botany: mercury, myrtle, mint, frankincense, lime and, possibly, cinnamon and copper.
