Abstract

Numerous studies have examined the effects of gender diversity in groups on creative performance, and no clear effect has been identified. Findings depend on situational cues making gender diversity more or less salient in groups. A large-scale study on two cohorts (N = 2,261) was conducted among business students to examine the impact of the gender diversity in small groups on divergent thinking in an idea-generation task performed by synchronous electronic brainstorming. Participants were automatically randomized in three- or four-member groups to generate ideas during 10 min on a gendered or neutral task. Then, five categories of groups where the proportion of men/women in groups varied from three/four men to three/four women were compared to examine creative performance on three divergent thinking measures (fluency, flexibility, and originality). A Multivariate Generalized Linear Mixed Model (mGLMM) showed greater fluency in all-women groups than in other groups (except mixed-gender groups composed of two men and two women), and more specifically “solo” groups composed of a single woman/man among a majority of men/women. For flexibility and originality, the superiority of all-women groups was found only in comparison to “solo” groups composed of a single woman. As gender differences are more salient in “solo” groups than in other groups faultlines may appear in groups, leading to a deleterious impact on creative performance.

Abstract

Description logics have been widely studied and used in several knowledge-based systems. They allow to model knowledge and more importantly to reason over it. Subsumption relationship, a hierarchical relationship between concepts, is one of the most common reasoning task. Matching and unification generalize subsumption to description involving variables. In this paper, we study the problem of reasoning in description logics with variables. More specifically, we consider refreshing semantics for variables in the context of the EL description logic. We investigate a particular reasoning mechanism, namely weak subsumption, which can be viewed as a generalization of matching and unification in presence of refreshing variables. We show that weak-subsumption is EXPTIME-complete. Our main technical results are derived by establishing a correspondence between this logic and variable automata.

Abstract

International audience; BackgroundResearchers worldwide are actively engaging in research activities to search for preventive and therapeutic interventions against COVID-19. Our aim was to describe the planning of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in terms of timing related to the course of the COVID-19 epidemic and research question evaluated.MethodWe performed a living mapping of RCTs registered in the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. We systematically search the platform every week for all RCTs evaluating preventive interventions and treatments for COVID-19 and created a publicly available interactive mapping tool at https://covid-nma.com to visualize all trials registered.ResultsBy August 12, 2020, 1,568 trials for COVID-19 were registered worldwide. Overall, the median ([Q1-Q3]; range) delay between the first case recorded in each country and the first RCT registered was 47 days ([33-67]; 15-163). For the 9 countries with the highest number of trials registered, most trials were registered after the peak of the epidemic (from 100% trials in Italy to 38% in the United States). Most trials evaluated treatments (1,333 trials; 85%); only 223 (14%) evaluated preventive strategies and 12 post-acute period intervention. A total of 254 trials were planned to assess different regimens of hydroxychloroquine with an expected sample size of 110,883 patients.ConclusionThis living mapping analysis showed that COVID-19 trials have relatively small sample size with certain redundancy in research questions. Most trials were registered when the first peak of the pandemic have passed.

Abstract

International audience; AMISIA a multidisciplinary, 36 months Defi CNRS AUTON project, aimed at the secondary prevention of the loss of autonomy for patients with traumatic brain injury and stroke. As “any patient is a unique case,” AMISIA proposes an integrated approach, mixing medical health devices, information technology, and human factors to provide patients, health care actors and caregivers from the relatives both the best incentives and high degree of monitoring. This first step aims to define a methodology to determine the indicators necessary to promote physical activity in traumatic brain injury and stroke patient. In line with the primary aim, we conducted a data collection experiment in Limoges with 61 volunteer participants. Data were biographic elements, socio - econo mic profiles, cognitive performance (Corsi test results), psychological battery (anxiety, fatigue, sleep), posture and gait measurement with 4 Imus and a Wii - balance board, and finally the physical activity over a week at home (Armband and Fitbit sensors). These data will help build a control database, to help extract individual profiles with machine learning techniques. Abstract

Image data are omnipresent for various applications. A considerable volume of data is produced and we need to develop tools to efficiently retrieve relevant information. Image mining is a new and challenging research field which tries to overcome some limitations reached by content-based image retrieval. Image mining deals with making associations between images from large database and presenting a resumed view. After a state of the art in the image retrieval field, this chapter presents some work and ideas about the need to define new descriptors to integrate image semantics. Clustering and characterization rules are combined to reduce the research space and produce a resumed view of an annotated image database. These data mining techniques are performed separately on visual descriptors and textual information (annotations, keywords, web pages). A visual ontology is derived from the textual part, and enriched with representative images associated to each concept of the ontology. Ontology-based navigation can also be seen as a user-friendly and powerful tool to retrieve relevant information. These two approaches should make the exploitation and the exploration of a large image database easier.

Abstract

National audience; A ce jour, le média image est omniprésent dans de nombreuses applications. Un volume de données considérable est produit ce qui conduit à la nécessité de développer des outils permettant de retrouver efficacement de l'information pertinente. Les systèmes de recherche actuels montrent aujourd'hui leurs limites en raison de l'absence de sémantique. Une voie qui semble intéressante à explorer afin de combler le fossé existant entre les propriétés extraites et le contenu sémantique, est la fouille de données. C'est un domaine de recherche encore immature mais très prometteur. Cet article présente des travaux préliminaires sur la manière de définir de nouveaux descripteurs intégrant la sémantique. Le clustering et la caractérisation des classes obtenues sont utilisés pour réduire l'espace de recherche et produire une vue résumée de la base. La navigation basée sur une ontologie visuelle est un moyen puissant et convivial pour retrouver de l'information pertinente.

23. Visual Content Based Retrieval in an Image Database with Relevant Feedback

Abstract

Objectives: Researchers worldwide are actively engaging in research activities to search for preventive and therapeutic interventions against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our aim was to describe the planning of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in terms of timing related to the course of the COVID-19 epidemic and research question evaluated. Study Design and Setting: We performed a living mapping of RCTs registered in the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. We systematically search the platform every week for all RCTs evaluating preventive interventions and treatments for COVID-19 and created a publicly available interactive mapping tool at https://covid-nma.com to visualize all trials registered. Results: By August 12, 2020, 1,568 trials for COVID-19 were registered worldwide. Overall, the median ([Q1–Q3]; range) delay between the first case recorded in each country and the first RCT registered was 47 days ([33–67]; 15–163). For the 9 countries with the highest number of trials registered, most trials were registered after the peak of the epidemic (from 100% trials in Italy to 38% in the United States). Most trials evaluated treatments (1,333 trials; 85%); only 223 (14%) evaluated preventive strategies and 12 postacute period intervention. A total of 254 trials were planned to assess different regimens of hydroxychloroquine with an expected sample size of 110,883 patients. Conclusion: This living mapping analysis showed that COVID-19 trials have relatively small sample size with certain redundancy in research questions. Most trials were registered when the first peak of the pandemic has passed.

Abstract

Considering the evolving and unpredictable job market, adaptability is an important skill for young adults. Such adaptability implies that schools need to teach key social competences, like communication, collaboration, or problem-solving. In this area, a gender gap has consistently been found, showing that boys display social competences less than girls. A large-scale nationwide multilab longitudinal experiment—the ProFAN project—was conducted in France among more than 10,000 vocational high-school students. Its primary goal was to develop and test an intervention promoting a range of psychological and psychosocial variables in vocational high schools, including social competences. This 2-year long, three-wave field experiment compared the effects of a cooperative learning method—the jigsaw classroom, that entails positive goal and resource interdependence—to two control conditions: one that involves cooperation with resource independence, and the other that remains business-as-usual. This article focuses on the differential development of perceived social competences of adolescent boys and girls over time, comparing the three pedagogical methods. Results of longitudinal multilevel modeling replicate the gender gap in perceived social competences and show that this gap widens with time. However, and most importantly, the analyses revealed that such widening of the gender gap was greater in the two control conditions than in the jigsaw condition, in which the evolution of boys' and girls' perceptions of social competences remained similar over time. Contributions to the understanding of the development and teaching of social competences in education settings are discussed. Educational Impact and Implications Statement: Social competences, like communication and collaboration, are key to adapting in today's ever-changing job market, and boys are usually found to be less skilled with social competences than girls. In a nationwide longitudinal intervention, we explored how schools can promote essential social competences in a way that compensates for this gap. In our study involving over 10,000 vocational high school students, we found that boys lag behind girls in reporting and valuing social competences and that this gap widens over time. However, implementing a jigsaw classroom—a cooperative learning method with positive goal and resource interdependence—was effective in refraining this gap from increasing. These findings emphasize that the jigsaw classroom allows all students to practice social competences and reduces the gender gap in social competences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
