An optical-optical double resonance sub-Doppler experiment is used to measure short nonradiative lifetimes in the C 1Σ+ state of LiH. These lifetimes are expected to result from the strong electronic interaction between the C 1Σ+ state and the continuum of the A 1Σ+ state and to vary with the vibrational quantum number, from nanoseconds to milliseconds [F. Gemperlé and F. X. Gadéa, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 11197 (1999)]. The experimental setup combines a molecular beam of LiH, a first cw laser beam locked to a given A-X absorption line, and a second cw laser beam scanned over C-A absorption profiles. Analysis of these absorption profiles in terms of Voigt profiles shows that their Lorentzian components significantly vary with the vibrational quantum numbers of the C state. Nonradiative decay rates deduced this way are systematically larger than the calculated ones but their variations are similar. An accurate potential curve for the bound and quasibound region of the B [sup 1]Π[sub u] state of [sup 7]Li[sub 2] is produced by analyzing high resolution sub-Doppler B [sup 1]Π[sub u]←X [sup 1]Σ[sub g][sup +] excitation spectra in conjunction with lower resolution data of Hessel and Vidal [J. Chem. Phys. 70, 4439 (1979)] and of Russier et al. [J. Mol. Spectrosc. 168, 39 (1994)]. The bound and quasibound part of the curve is generated by the direct fit of molecular energies to a numerical potential; the outermost (repulsive) part of the curve is calculated by an asymptotic method using Coulombic and exchange parameters determined from the 1 [sup 1]Π[sub g] and A [sup 1]Σ[sub u][sup +] states of the lithium dimer. The full potential energy curve of the B [sup 1]Π[sub u] state reproduces all measured energies of f parity, and the widths of the predissociated lines, to within the experimental accuracy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Reports that a sub-Doppler experiment involving an effusive beam of lithium dimers and a continuous wave tunable dye laser is used to record the absorption spectrum of the B-X system. Translationally cold caesium molecules are created by photoassociation below the 6s + 6p1/2excited state and selectively detected by resonance enhanced two photon ionization (RE2PI). A series of excited vibrational levels belonging to the 0−gsymmetry is identified. The regular progression of the vibrational spacings and of the rotational constants of the 0−g(6s + 6p1/2) levels is strongly altered in two energy domains. These deviations are interpreted in terms of resonant coupling with deeply bound energy levels of two upper 0−gstates dissociating into the 6s + 6p3/2and 6s + 5d3/2asymptotes. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the coupling and a quantum defect analysis of the perturbed level position is performed. Moreover, the resonant coupling changes dramatically the spontaneous decay products of the photoexcited molecules, strongly enhancing the decay into deeply bound levels of the a3Σ+utriplet state and of the X1Σ+gground state. We perform one- and two-photon high resolution spectroscopy on ultracold samples of RbCs Feshbach molecules with the aim to identify a suitable route for efficient ground-state transfer in the quantum-gas regime to produce quantum gases of dipolar RbCs ground-state molecules. One-photon loss spectroscopy allows us to probe deeply bound rovibrational levels of the mixed excited (A(1)Σ(+)-b(3)Π)0(+) molecular states. Two-photon dark state spectroscopy connects the initial Feshbach state to the rovibronic ground state. We determine the binding energy of the lowest rovibrational level |v'' = 0, J'' = 0> of the X(1)Σ(+) ground state to be D = 3811.5755(16) cm(-1), a 300-fold improvement in accuracy with respect to previous data. We are now in the position to perform stimulated two-photon Raman transfer to the rovibronic ground state.

One possibility for the creation of ultracold, high phase space density quantum gases of molecules in the rovibronic ground state relies on first associating weakly-bound molecules from quantum-degenerate atomic gases on a Feshbach resonance and then transferring the molecules via several steps of coherent two-photon stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) into the rovibronic ground state. Here, in ultracold samples of Cs2 Feshbach molecules produced out of ultracold samples of Cs atoms, we observe several optical transitions to deeply-bound rovibrational levels of the excited 0(u)+ molecular potentials with high resolution. At least one of these transitions, although rather weak, allows efficient STIRAP transfer into the deeply-bound vibrational level (see text for symbols)v = 73 > of the singlet X1 sigma(g)+ ground state potential, as recently demonstrated (J. G. Danzl, E. Haller, M. Gustavsson, M. J. Mark, R. Hart, N. Bouloufa, O. Dulieu, H. Ritsch, and H.-C. Nägerl, Science, 2008, 321, 1062). From this level, the rovibrational ground state (see text for symbols)v = 0, J = 0 > can be reached with one more transfer step. In total, our results show that coherent ground state transfer for Cs2 is possible using a maximum of two successive two-photon STIRAP processes or one single four-photon STIRAP process.

By using broadband lasers, we demonstrate the possibilities for control of cold molecules formed via photoassociation. Firstly, we present a detection REMPI scheme (M. Viteau et al., Phys. Rev. A, 2009, 79, 021402) to systematically investigate the mechanisms of formation of ultracold Cs2 molecules in deeply bound levels of their electronic ground state X1sigma(g)+. This broadband detection scheme could be generalized to other molecular species. Then we report a vibrational cooling technique (M. Viteau et al., Science, 2008, 321, 232) through optical pumping obtained by using a shaped mode locked femtosecond laser. The broadband femtosecond laser excites the molecules electronically, leading to a redistribution of the vibrational population in the ground state via a few absorption-spontaneous emission cycles. By removing the laser frequencies corresponding to the excitation of the v = 0 level, we realize a dark state for the so-shaped femtosecond laser, leading, with the successive laser pulses, to an accumulation of the molecules in the v = 0 level, ie. a laser cooling of the vibration. The simulation of the vibrational laser cooling allows us to characterize the criteria to extend the mechanism to other molecular species (R. V. Krems, Int. Rev. Phys. Chem., 2005, 24, 99). We finally discuss the generalization of the technique to laser cooling of the rotation of the molecule.

Molecular cooling techniques face the hurdle of dissipating translational as well as internal energy in the presence of a rich electronic, vibrational, and rotational energy spectrum. In our experiment, we create a translationally ultracold, dense quantum gas of molecules bound by more than 1000 wave numbers in the electronic ground state. Specifically, we stimulate with 80% efficiency, a two-photon transfer of molecules associated on a Feshbach resonance from a Bose-Einstein condensate of cesium atoms. In the process, the initial loose, long-range electrostatic bond of the Feshbach molecule is coherently transformed into a tight chemical bond. We demonstrate coherence of the transfer in a Ramsey-type experiment and show that the molecular sample is not heated during the transfer. Our results show that the preparation of a quantum gas of molecules in specific rovibrational states is possible and that the creation of a Bose-Einstein condensate of molecules in their rovibronic ground state is within reach.

The methods producing cold molecules from cold atoms tend to leave molecular ensembles with substantial residual internal energy. For instance, cesium molecules initially formed via photoassociation of cold cesium atoms are in several vibrational levels nu of the electronic ground state. We applied a broadband femtosecond laser that redistributes the vibrational population in the ground state via a few electronic excitation/spontaneous emission cycles. The laser pulses are shaped to remove the excitation frequency band of the nu = 0 level, preventing re-excitation from that state. We observed a fast and efficient accumulation ( approximately 70% of the initially detected molecules) in the lowest vibrational level, nu = 0, of the singlet electronic state. The validity of this incoherent depopulation pumping method is very general and opens exciting prospects for laser cooling and manipulation of molecules.
